A sixteenth-century villa in the hilly outskirts of Florence that, at times, has been both a stables and a nightclub, Thermae is one of the most spectacular places we’ve seen in Italy. Its restoration has been a labour of love for the host, Giovanni, and the way that he’s incorporated technology into the original structure is simply impressive. There’s too much to describe here, but know that everything's been taken care of. And if we did have to choose one thing that stood out, it might have to be the pool, hidden away in the vaults, and only accessible through a trapdoor.

This fairy tale tower is the perfect place for a unique, romantic getaway. Located in picturesque Porto Venere, you’ll have four floors to yourselves here, including a roof terrace with sea views. The stone tower, which dates back to 1161, boasts a marble dining table – perfect for pasta for two – a Jacuzzi bathtub, and a wine cellar. To make your stay even more special, your host provides breakfast and can help arrange a variety of treats, such as a private chef to cook for you at home. We recommend hiring a car here as there's plenty to do and see within a short drive. No matter where you choose to go, you'll find vibrant Italian culture to soak up (and so much good food). The home itself is located in the village of Sant’Andrea di Compito – a place known for its stunning Camellia trees dating back to the 1800s. We recommend wandering its streets and taking in the medieval charm.

The apartment is rustic in style, with exposed stone walls and terracotta floor tiles. It’s the perfect retreat for a romantic getaway.

Already built by the 17th century, according to the Medici maps drawn up then, this medieval borghi might even be decades older. Though we're unsure of its age, there's no doubt of its beauty. The interior with exposed beams and brick is what you'd expect from an older home, but the traditional style might feel dated to some. Still, it's comfortable and charming, giving way to a sweeping garden. Kids will love the opportunity to run around on the lush green grass whilst adults take advantage of the sun loungers, poolside and terrace seating. Our favourite is the dining table under the vine-covered pergola. You'll find the renowned spas of Casciana Terme or Monsummano Terme minutes away.

Each building has its own alfresco dining area, so there’s plenty of space to spread out. This is a traditional Tuscan home, so the decor won’t suit those seeking a sleek, modern look.

Found in an ancient hamlet in Lucca, this Italian cottage charms with stone walls and exposed beams.  Because of its age, the interior is that of a more traditional home, which might not be to everyone's taste. Still, it's comfortable and family-friendly.  It's worth noting the sloped ceilings could be hazardous to taller guests, and there's no air conditioning in the third bedroom. With ample outdoor seating, you can take in the greenery on the horizon with a glass of wine. The swimming pool above ground also gives you a unique view of the village. For day trips, venture to Pisa or Lucca – both reachable by car.
