With a seasonal swimming pool, outdoor fire pit and dappled terrace perfect for alfresco dining, you won't be short on spots to soak up the swoon-worthy scenery. Inside, the design is charming and cosy, bursting with traditional character. Some may consider it a little dated, but we think that's part of the appeal. Two guests will share a sofa bed on the mezzanine, though – since privacy is limited, we think it's best for kids. Location-wise, you're just a short drive from the small medieval town of Gualdo Cattaneo, while Todi, Perugia and Assisi are all excellent options for day trips.

Your host can provide a free high chair here and little ones will love the garden, though the interior decor is quite traditional and won't be for everyone. You'll find public parking a short walk away, but Cortona's mouth-watering restaurants and picturesque churches are reached easily on foot, so you won't need a car.

The lush, green countryside is echoed in the home’s 3.5-hectare garden, where you’ll find an olive grove with 700 trees, alongside manicured lawns and terracotta terraces nearer the home. Breathe in the scent of oleander flowers and fig, plum and fruit trees as you make your way to the pergola framed by trailing plants – the perfect spot for an alfresco lunch cooked on the traditional wood oven. You’re likely to spend much of your time laying back on the sunbeds or swimming in the pool, but in the evenings, the glass gazebo is the perfect spot to enjoy a glass of local wine. Inside, as well as the main kitchen and grand living space, you’ll find a separate kitchen, sitting room and two bedrooms on the lower floor, making this a great space for two families or groups of friends.The historic town of Foligno is just 5km away, with Perugia a 40-minute drive and Siena only a little further in the distance.

As for the outdoor space, for us, it has the wow factor. We love the open-air cottage, while the private pool, sun-kissed terraces and panoramic views are sure to be a hit with all. 

A Peaceful Paradise

You can watch the stunning sunsets from this stone farmhouse in the Umbrian hills. Take in the views of the surrounding valleys from the private pool, garden and balcony – wonderful memories with family and friends are sure to be created here. The accommodation, set over three floors, is split between the main house and an annexe which has two more bedrooms and and a kitchen area. Another highlight is the location – it’s only 12 kilometres from the historical centre of Todi, with its medieval buildings, piazzas, palaces and Roman relics.

Leave the tourist trail behind and embrace authentic Tuscan village life during a stay at this charming four-bedroom cottage. The charming stone facade is comfortably the oldest in town, with a history dating back hundreds of years, we're sure this place would have some stories to tell.

Your hosts have lovingly renovated the building to create two self-contained two-bedroom apartments that can be effortlessly combined for multi-generational family stays and getaways with groups of friends – all while maintaining a degree of privacy. With exposed stone walls, terracotta floors, and beamed ceilings, this sympathetic renovation preserves the period features and original character so well that, at times, you'll feel as though you've stepped into a time machine. However, with all the mod cons you'd expect, there'll be no reading by candlelight and washing clothes by hand, unless you want to, of course.

The village has a small convenience store within walking distance of the home, plus plenty of hiking and biking paths, including the Path of Reclamation. This 62km-long trail runs along the banks of the Canale Maestro della Chiana through the Cortona countryside between Arezzo and Chiusi.

However, you'll need to jump in the car for easy access to larger grocery shops and restaurants, which are just a short drive away in Cortona. The city shot to fame as the unwitting star of the 2003 Hollywood film 'Under the Tuscan Sun', but has managed to retain its soul. With its Medici fortress, history of handmade ceramics and fascinating museums, it's well worth a visit.

For adventures further afield, equally beautifully cities, such as Arezzo and Siena are within an hour's drive, while Italy's east and west coasts are within day-trip distance, at approximately two-and-a-half hours drive each way.

A great option for couples or friends sharing (although children over 12 are welcome), each bedroom has a private ensuite, and there's heaps of space for socialising on the alfresco terraces. Rather not cook? Hire in a private chef (for an additional fee). Set nine kilometres from the lakeside town of Passignano sul Trasimeno, you'll need a car to get around as there's not much within walking distance. But the trade-off? Peaceful seclusion and privacy.

Inside, exposed beams, an open hearth and plump sofas create a warm welcome, while the kitchen-dining area is ready to host an elegant dinner. Enjoy a quiet moment with a good book on the wisteria-covered pergola, surrounded by the scent of potted lavender, before heading out to explore. Stroll around the village of Panicale, right on your doorstep, or drive over to Perugia for a tour of the excavations under San Lorenzo cathedral, followed by a mosey around Porta Sole, the city’s creative quarter. When dusk falls, pick out a family-run restaurant for a selection of hearty local dishes.
