You’ll be surrounded by the history and culture of Italy’s bigger cities, but will be able to enjoy a quieter visit. This apartment boasts a petite Juliet balcony where you can look out over Orvieto’s rooftops, the garden, and a 1000-year-old church. The fully-equipped kitchen makes dining in a breeze, and the espresso machine is a big help in the morning.

And when you’re ready to explore the surrounding area, the lakeside town of Bolsena, and the hilltop towns of Orvieto and Montefiascone, are all within a thirty-minute drive.

If you're a frequent visitor to Tuscany and looking for somewhere that's slightly off the beaten track for your next trip, the medieval town of Cortona is a lovely choice and this apartment on the outer edges will help you see the best of it.

Spread across two floors, the interior is a distinctive mix of period features, such as the flagstone floors and wooden ceiling beams, and modern touches, like the monochrome kitchen and smart grey bathroom. Compared to a lot of other apartments for two, there's a pleasing amount of space inside and nothing feels cramped.

The local town is one that's easy to explore on foot and you'll discover plenty of restaurants and ice cream parlours, plus a couple of museums, during your wanderings. The Basilica of Saint Margaret of Cortona and Fortress of Girifalco are both only twenty minutes away on foot, too.

The terrace boasts lovely views of the surrounding landscape, though the outdoor space is overlooked by nearby buildings, so it doesn't feel the most private. Your host can provide a free high chair here and little ones will love the garden, though the interior decor is quite traditional and won't be for everyone. You'll find public parking a short walk away, but Cortona's mouth-watering restaurants and picturesque churches are reached easily on foot, so you won't need a car.

Located just outside Cetona in Tuscany, this picturesque home is the perfect place to find peace and tranquility amidst the region’s renowned rolling hills and forests. A renovated stone mill, its romance is clear the moment you step inside. From its beamed ceilings, traditional kitchen and bright study that leads out in the garden, this compact but comfortable villa feels like an intimate country hideaway made for the sole purpose of your relaxation. And then there’s the bedroom with its forest palette, green gothic headboard and access to the terrace. Wake up and head outside for your morning coffee under a shady oak tree, then while away the hours in the pool or discover the babbling brook just beyond the home’s canopy of trees. The medieval town of Cetona with its sandy-hued piazza and palazzo is also just five minutes away by car. This home in a palazzo in Orvieto is a little bit special. The palazzo boasts a wonderfully central location, and looks out over the city and gardens. This apartment has two terraces, plus additional shared rooftop terrace reached via a fairly steep spiral staircase. If you can manage the stairs, though, you’ll be rewarded by the views, which stretch as far as the surrounding Tuscan and Umbrian hills. Inside, you'll get to enjoy the blend of modern and antique decor, which adds to the charm of this home.

This cosy cabin lies just outside Bolsena, Italy, and is the perfect romantic getaway. We love the open-plan layout, and with all rooms on a single level, it's easily accessible. The home is on the extensive grounds of the owners' property, so the entrance to the garden is shared with the main house. But the pool, barbecue, and other facilities are for your private use, and your privacy will be respected during your stay. You'll have views of Lake Bolsena from the terrace, and the nearest restaurant is just under 1km away.

And for explorations further afield, the picturesque hilltop town of Cortona is just a ten–minute drive away. From here you can meander through the medieval streets, stop for gelato and savour the beauty of the Valdichiana valley.
