With a seasonal swimming pool, outdoor fire pit and dappled terrace perfect for alfresco dining, you won't be short on spots to soak up the swoon-worthy scenery. Inside, the design is charming and cosy, bursting with traditional character. Some may consider it a little dated, but we think that's part of the appeal. Two guests will share a sofa bed on the mezzanine, though – since privacy is limited, we think it's best for kids. Location-wise, you're just a short drive from the small medieval town of Gualdo Cattaneo, while Todi, Perugia and Assisi are all excellent options for day trips.

There are few things better in life than an infinity pool, but an infinity pool with a gorgeous view is definitely among them. This home in the heart of Umbria treats paddlers to a verdant panorama of rolling countryside and distant hilltops.

It's a truly rustic scene and you'll be glad to hear that the home itself slots nicely into the landscape. Traditional in style, you'll find high-ceilinged rooms filled with elegant wooden furnishings, antique decorations and floor tiling so shiny you can almost see your reflection in it. However, it's more modern where it matters, particularly the super-sleek bathrooms and equally glossy kitchens.

If you pay a visit during the warmer months, you'll most likely want to spend as many hours out in the open air as possible and that's more than easy to do here. As well as the aforementioned pool, guests also have a large garden at their disposal, plus a barbecue and alfresco table for when dinnertime rolls around.

There are plenty of attractions in the local area, too. Bevagna is only a kilometre away and its quaint streets are lovely to wander before stopping for dinner and digestifs in one of the restaurants. You don't have to travel much further to find more Umbrian gems either, from Assisi 25 kilometres away to Perugia only 44 kilometres away.

Sitting within a medieval borgo (little village) whose heyday was the early 17th century, this villa complex embraces old-world Umbria. It’s pure peace and quiet out here between the endless olive groves (extra virgin olive oil is the region’s speciality) and rolling hills covered in a patchwork of fields. It’s five kilometres to Monte Castello di Vibio with its ancient theatre and fifteen kilometres to the pretty town of Todi for restaurants and supermarkets.

The yard, where wheat was once threshed by hand, is now home to a smattering of chairs and tables for tipples in the sunshine. The porticoed upper terrace is the perfect spot for breakfast, or big barbecue lunches, with views of the 22-hectare estate. But the crowning glory of the gardens has to be that Roman-style swimming pool with its panoramic view of the countryside.

Accommodation is split between three separate buildings set around the courtyard. Two annexes have their own kitchenettes, living rooms and dining area so the group can spread out. The main villa is home to myriad antique-filled lounges and living rooms, including a striking main lounge set around the ancient hearth. Low, wood-beamed ceilings and old agricultural tools on the walls give that rustic farmhouse feel. A little games room invites guests to sit down for a game of chess or to peruse the library of books in here. But the real bonus inside is the dedicated celebration room which is a vast, barn-like space which can be set up for dining, dancing or even a spot of yoga.

Tucked into the heart of the Umbrian countryside, this villa is just the ticket for those looking for a tranquil stay. While the traditional interiors may not be to everyone’s taste, the outdoor space will be a hit with all. Sun-drenched terraces, a swimming pool and a Jacuzzi – what’s not to love? Inside, as well as the main kitchen and grand living space, you’ll find a separate kitchen, sitting room and two bedrooms on the lower floor, making this a great space for two families or groups of friends.The historic town of Foligno is just 5km away, with Perugia a 40-minute drive and Siena only a little further in the distance.

This former farmhouse boasts panoramic views, a private swimming pool, and plenty of character. Everyone will love milling about the garden. Stretch out on a poolside lounger after a dip, or gather under the veranda for a drink as the sun goes down. We're big fans of the traditional details inside – think chestnut ceiling beams, terracotta floors, and antique Sicilian majolica pottery. For those keen on privacy, the fifth bedroom is situated in an adjacent annexe with its own kitchenette. Location-wise, the small commune of Attigliano is a five-minute drive away, while Orvieto, Perugia, and Rome are all great day trip options.

The interior is beautiful, but we imagine you’ll be spending most of your time making the most of the outdoors. Especially when considering the outdoor kitchen, fully equipped for trying your hand at local dishes. Spend days lounging by the saltwater pool, taking a dip to cool off, while soaking in the rural surroundings. And spend evenings beneath the pergola, white curtains gently swaying in the wind, tucking into a fresh barbecue dinner around the dining table. After nights of tipsy piano playing and a few games of pool, you’ll love sinking into your cosy beds, already looking forward to waking up to the verdant, rolling views that both bedrooms are met with. 

If you never wanted to leave this slice of countryside heaven, we’d get it. But this corner of Italy is one of the last areas that isn’t yet on the tourist trail, so you can explore the region of Marche and its beaches, walled cities, and archaeological sites with ease.

Traditional and cosy, this villa has all the hallmarks of an Umbrian getaway. The private pool is open in the summer and boasts panoramic views of the surrounding hills. Indoors, there's plenty of character to admire – the home was built in 1616, after all. Our favourite spot is the conservatory-style lounge, with its large windows showing off the scenery. Two bedrooms are located in a separate annexe, making it ideal for those wanting a bit more space and privacy. As for location, you'll be based near the medieval village of Monte Castello di Vibio and within easy driving distance of Todi, Perugia, and Orvieto.

As far as villas go, you don't get much more 'hilltop' than this. Soak up the views across the Umbrian hills towards the city of Todi, a tableau so beautiful so you'll never want to leave. The scents of jasmine, lavender, and roses follow you down the stone steps to the infinity pool, which is surrounded by sun loungers and a shaded gazebo. The views take centre-stage in the villa, too – large windows surround the space, where you'll find a country-style kitchen with an island and a cosy living space with a corner sofa and fireplace. A marble staircase leads upstairs to the bedrooms, where you'll wake up each morning to similarly spectacular country vistas. Sip your coffee outside on the terrace, then spend the morning sunbathing on the perfectly manicured lawn. Take the 10-minute drive to Todi to wander the cobbled streets and explore local restaurants – you might recognise some of the plazas from Italian movies. When dusk falls, pick out a family-run restaurant for a selection of hearty local dishes.

Based just a short drive from the blue waters of Bolsena Lake, this 20th-century Italian farmhouse has been respectfully renovated to keep the original features that give this home its unique character – with exposed beams of chestnut wood, dramatic round vaults and beautiful terracotta floors. We love the contemporary, minimalist style that they’ve blended in with the retro feel, making the home feel absolutely charming.

We absolutely love the dining area, where you can feast on Italian suppers of soup and risotto all together. There are two large living areas, giving you plenty of room to stretch out and relax – one featuring a lovely fireplace where you can cosy up in colder months. There’s even a ping pong table where you can challenge your loved ones to a table tennis game or two. Outside, you’ll find huge, lush expanses of green parkland, as well as a private pool where you can take a refreshing dip.

One of the rooms has bunk beds – making this a great option for families travelling with children.

Standing high and proud above sea level, this turreted fortress gazes down at the stunning, surrounding countryside. Planted neatly between the delights of Tuscany and Umbria and with Lake Trasimeno in the foreground, a medieval trail of monuments, spas, and villages await to be explored. The villa itself is like an ancient towerhouse, rising up between the trees. The 360-degree view from its highest point overlooks the vast grounds, so you can survey the lands like a king or queen. Kids can play Rapunzel in the tower, or run around on the lawn and splash in the pool. With so many sheltered seating spots, from terraces to balconies, there’s plenty of spots to escape with a good book and bask in the peace and quiet. Il Sogno

Ideal for a group of friends or perhaps a multi-generational break, this farmhouse is said to be the oldest building in the village and, although it's been smartly modernised, it's still beautifully traditional. Just as it would have been when it was built, the main house is divided into separate apartments – one upstairs and one on the ground floor. With two small kitchens, two bedrooms and two bathrooms each, it's perfect if you'd like to all mingle in the outdoor space but retreat to some privacy at night. Deep in the Cortona countryside, it's a great base for exploring Tuscany, with Arezzo, Montepulciano, Siena and Assisi all within easy reach for a day trip by car.
