Amidst rolling hills and sweeping vineyards, this stone villa promises a serene Umbrian getaway. With a seasonal swimming pool, outdoor fire pit and dappled terrace perfect for alfresco dining, you won't be short on spots to soak up the swoon-worthy scenery. Inside, the design is charming and cosy, bursting with traditional character. Some may consider it a little dated, but we think that's part of the appeal. Two guests will share a sofa bed on the mezzanine, though – since privacy is limited, we think it's best for kids. Location-wise, you're just a short drive from the small medieval town of Gualdo Cattaneo, while Todi, Perugia and Assisi are all excellent options for day trips.

Floor-to-ceiling black-framed windows and a sensitive renovation have turned this 16th-century Umbrian dovecote tower into one of the region's smartest stays. Behind the stone tower, the jagged cliffs and town of Orvieto loom, while in front, the rolling hills stretch before you. Interiors meld old with new. Flagstone floors and antique furniture sit alongside steel ceiling pipes and geometric prints. As one would expect in a tower, there are several spiralling staircases – as well as gawp-worthy views. Push open the sliding doors in the grey, country-style kitchen and step out onto the terrace. A built-in barbecue and wrought-iron table overlook the Italian countryside, while a large vegetable garden and fruit trees provide the freshest ingredients. Continue down to find 1.5 hectares of garden with Etruscan origin and the swimming pool, which was once an agricultural fountain. It’s a secluded retreat, but still within easy access to all that Umbria has to offer. The villa is rustic, with a simple and comfortable decor – expect cotto floors, beamed ceilings and exposed original stonework, plus a few antiques. The gardens have been designed to make the most of the wraparound views, so you’ll find many a terrace and quiet corner to enjoy. We love the fig tree by the pool – time your visit right and you can pick sun-warmed fruit straight from the tree for breakfast.

Located just a stone's throw away from Serrapetrona, renowned for its Vernaccia red wine, this country home offers scenic views over the surrounding natural landscape. And with a private swimming pool, extensive gardens and patio terrace to call your own here, you'll find plenty of places to soak it all up. Inside, the home epitomises the quintessential Italian countryside, so while the interiors feel a little dated in parts, the home is filled with charm. Beyond the house, you'll need a car to explore the local area, or we suggest renting bicycles during the warmer months.

Set nine kilometres from the lakeside town of Passignano sul Trasimeno, you'll need a car to get around as there's not much within walking distance. But the trade-off? This gorgeous pale stone house is tucked just outside of the small town of Palazzone in the Tuscan countryside. Far-reaching views of the lush countryside of Tuscany and Umbria make for a magnificent backdrop, complementing the centuries-old trees, olive groves, and meadows that surround the home. This is an idyll, where the scent of lavender carries on the breeze. 

The garden is a haven of tranquillity and natural beauty. Float in the swimming pool while you watch bees bob around the flowers, the hum of insects the only sound to disturb the peace.
