Built in the 12th century, this ancient tower rises out of the forest like a scene from a painting. It was once the home of an aristocratic family and we imagine they would be proud of the lavish reconstruction that’s taken place here. Old stone fireplaces sit alongside striking mid-century furniture and vibrant modern artworks are sandwiched between terracotta floors and wood-beamed ceilings. As you wind your way up the tower, the view over the forests and hills around you gets better and better, all from original arched windows. Antique beds adorn each plush bedroom and there’s something fairytale-esque about drifting off to sleep at the top of a tower.

Outside, there’s a long dining table amidst the flowers and greenery, perfect for a long, lazy Italian lunch. A sleek little swimming pool hangs off the side of the garden, and loungers here look out over the hills to a rival tower in the distance. If you're staying to celebrate something special, there's a little 18th century chapel in the grounds too. Out in the rolling hills of Umbria, this pretty stone villa embraces the quiet, provincial life. It’s surrounded by two hectares of forest, olive groves and fieldland and the private gardens are alive with lavender and fragrant Mediterranean herbs. Between the plant life, there are sunloungers on lawns, a children’s play park and plenty of shaded spots beneath trees to settle down with a good book. Perhaps the crowning glory of the gardens is the turquoise swimming pool, shimmering in the Umbrian sunshine. Though foodies may argue it’s the rustic summer kitchen with its brick-built grill, stone sink and prep area for long, lazy lunches in the loggia outside.

The home is split between the main villa and a separate annexe, and large groups will find myriad sitting rooms and lounges to spread out. Smoke-blackened hearths speak of the home’s history and sitting rooms beneath wooden ceilings are home to antique furniture and little libraries of holiday reads. There are two kitchens to choose from – one in the annexe and one in the main villa, and we love the annexe’s living room with its arched window looking out over the undulating Umbrian countryside.  

Should you wish to explore beyond the grounds, the pretty town of Todi is around three kilometres away. It’s picture-perfect, perched on a hilltop where rambling medieval streets house local trattoria and quaint little shops. This is where you can stock up on supplies at the supermarket too.

Once the home of wealthy landowners, it's been carefully restored to maintain its character and elegance, while making a few luxurious modern improvements. Within an easy drive of many of this region's major attractions, it's set on a peaceful estate with large private gardens. 

As soon as you drive up to the front, it's clear this imposing home is something very special indeed. Its arching windows, tower room and checkerboard terrace make this the quintessential Umbrian villa. And inside doesn't disappoint either, with frescoes, tiled floors and antique furnishings. There's a fabulous, professional-grade kitchen for whipping up meals both casual and formal, with the latter served in the grand dining hall with a series of tall French doors that open to the terrace.

Outside, the grounds are beautifully maintained, with cypress trees, lavender and rose borders surrounding the lawns. A large, pristine pool awaits, with sun loungers and a shaded poolside dining area that also boasts a bar. And there's a play area for the children, shaded by mature trees. 

Just a short drive from the stunning Marmore Falls, and with easy access to Todi, Spello, Orvieto and Spoleto, it's an area known for its fine wine and excellent food. The centre of Acquasparta is an eight-minute from the home and Terni is twenty minutes away.

Todi is close by, Perugia is a forty-five-minute drive, and Assisi is less than an hour away.

Floor-to-ceiling black-framed windows and a sensitive renovation have turned this 16th-century Umbrian dovecote tower into one of the region's smartest stays. Behind the stone tower, the jagged cliffs and town of Orvieto loom, while in front, the rolling hills stretch before you. Interiors meld old with new. Flagstone floors and antique furniture sit alongside steel ceiling pipes and geometric prints. As one would expect in a tower, there are several spiralling staircases – as well as gawp-worthy views. Push open the sliding doors in the grey, country-style kitchen and step out onto the terrace. A built-in barbecue and wrought-iron table overlook the Italian countryside, while a large vegetable garden and fruit trees provide the freshest ingredients. Continue down to find 1.5 hectares of garden with Etruscan origin and the swimming pool, which was once an agricultural fountain. Forget about any form of work, now all you have to worry about is which spot to pick around the water, with the rush of the nearby brook providing background music.
