Between the baroque buildings of San Miguel de Allende’s historic core, stepping into this home is to leave the world behind. Set around the tranquillity of a courtyard, where a fountain trickles away in the centre and walls are alive with botanica, the tangerine walls of this building hide myriad surprises. 

Perhaps the most striking surprise is the hot tub on the terrace, looking into the trees. There’s a barbecue area outside, with pretty mosaic tables, a gas grill for cooking and an azulejo-tiled bar for a batch of margaritas. 

Or, head inside and cook in the beautiful kitchen instead. A range-style cooker sits beneath an old flue, with a pretty blue and yellow mosaic backdrop. Stained-glass windows create a serving hatch between the kitchen and dining room. The grand lounge is illuminated by candelabra, suspended from the vaulted brick ceiling. Light a fire in the grate to keep things cosy on cooler evenings. Heading up to bed, you’ll find hotel-suite-style bedrooms and the master has its own fireplace and balcony. 

This villa sits on one of the most prestigious streets in the city, right next to Parque Juárez. The city’s best bars, restaurants and its famous art scene is a short walk away, and retiring to your quiet villa is bliss after a day of exploring.

Fountain Of Life

If you’re looking for a showstopper home, then this villa near the small fishing village of Boca de Tomatlan could be the one. With an indoor waterfall, sea views from every angle, and two swimming pools, it certainly has the wow factor. You won’t have to fight for the best bedroom here – they’re all en-suite with a lounge area and terrace overlooking the water – and your host can help arrange a private chef to cook for you in the home’s commercial kitchen. Plus you’ll have direct access to the beach. We think this home will suit a group wanting to escape the crowds of nearby Puerto Vallarta while still having the resort’s amenities to hand.

Waterfalls and Palm Trees

This gorgeous home sits inside a beautiful world-class resort in Punta Mita. A stunning private villa, it can be found on the seventh fairway of one of two Nicklaus Signature eighteen-hole golf courses in the resort – the views are magnificent. 

The villa nods to traditional Mexican style but has been designed to blend the old and new. Exposed wooden beams and tiled floors sit alongside epic floor-to-ceiling glass walls that bring the outside in, with the verdant garden visible from almost every angle. When you’re inside, you’ll spend your time cooking in the gourmet kitchen – or watching a private chef do the hard work for you – and relaxing in comfortable luxury. The master suite boasts a whirlpool tub that’s ideal for soaking away your troubles, as well as a private deck. You can sip your morning coffee while drinking in the view of the golf course. 

Outside, you’ll find a lush garden with lovely views and a dining area with a barbecue. If you’re anything like us, you’ll probably spend most of your time in the heated pool. At sunset, move into the hot tub and watch the sky change colour, before the stars begin to emerge. There’s real romance in this gorgeous setting. 

You’ll have your own six-seater golf cart to use for exploring the rest of the resort and you’ll need it – there’s plenty to discover. In addition to the two golf courses, you’ll have access to the beach clubs and their pools and restaurants, a tennis centre, and a spa and fitness centre. Surfers will love strolling just a few minutes to the nearest beach. There’s something for everyone here.

Fairway Finery

Located in Mexico's Nima Bay, this luxurious apartment has three bedrooms with their own en-suites. The balcony offers expansive views with space to sit out with an evening drink, though the location does mean it won't feel completely private and there is a chance you might hear some outside noise. You'll have a dedicated concierge service here, and a free daily transfer to the sunny Sabal beach club. For an additional fee, you can enjoy a range of services to make your trip extra special, from privileged access to the Marina Vallarta Golf Course to a private chef.

Sweet Dreamy

A hilltop position gives this Mexican home prime views of the El Charco del Ingenio nature conservatory, making it an idyllic break away - especially when the day is young and the world quiet. Why not sit outside with a coffee to appreciate the tranquillity on offer?

Inside you’ll find another kind of beauty. Unlike the outside view, where everything is wild and lush, the interior focuses on precision and puts every little thing perfectly in its place. It's vibrant and sprawling, with vaulted ceilings, exposed beams, and a striking colour palette. Pair that with brightly lit spaces and beautifully curated art and furnishings, and you have a beautiful space to enjoy your holiday in whichever way best rejuvenates you. For some, it might be reading in the outdoor nook, whereas others might enjoy a glass of wine on the balcony.  There’s a massage room, too, and nothing says relaxation quite like a back massage.

With most of the home facing towards the courtyard, there’s a feeling of always being connected to the outdoors, but with plenty of garden seating and a sprawling lawn, you can wander out into the sunshine whenever you’d like.

Antique mesquite wood and thick beams made from recycled ‘Trojes’ from the state of Michoacán combine with hand-crafted furnishings and objets d'art from around the globe to create a cocooning effect in the instantly inviting living space. We love the meticulous attention to detail, from the 19th-century River Teak door and raw quartzite chef's kitchen, to the locally-sourced artwork and Colombian artisan hammock, weaved over four months – everything about this home is expertly put together. 

Whether you're washing up in the stone-cadded bathroom, enjoying a book in the cosy reading nook besides a crackling fire, or settling down for a movie night in the upper-floor TV room on a custom-made modular sofa, it's hard not to be impressed. Ascend to the rooftop terrace for a dip in the pool, before firing up the Viking barbecue grill for dinner and drinks around the black marble firepit, watching the stars emerge in the night sky.
