We fell in love with the outdoor areas the minute we saw them. The hammock makes the perfect place to get stuck into a good book, while the covered dining terrace is wonderful for sunset socialising with cocktails in hand. And that's all without mentioning that amazing outdoor private pool, where you can float on a lilo and top up your tan, or splash about to your heart's content.

Inside, the home is somehow even more striking. Colourful retro interiors give the home a wonderfully charming feel – the dining area looks like something from an Alice in Wonderland book, and is ideal for feasting on Piri-Piri chicken – and the vibrant lounge is fantastic for late-night drinks and party games. There's even a sauna here for when you need ultimate relaxation.

The lawned garden and private pool are the ideal spots to soak up the sunshine, while the barbecue and covered dining terrace are perfect for alfresco evenings.

Escape the ordinary at this technicolour, Moorish-inspired villa nestled in the quiet neighbourhood of Galé and just a five-minute saunter from its vast sandy shores.

Far from the crowded spots of Albufeira, the pace of life is slower here – which is just how we like it. Jump in the car to uncover Algarve's secluded coves, or you could stay put exactly where you are. Galé's five kilometers of glorious sands, backed by beachside bars and cafes, might be all you need.

Back at home, there's a more-is-more opulence about this characterful villa awash in sunny yellow. Friends or families holidaying together will love how spaced out and private the bedrooms feel, set across two floors and each one boasting their own en-suite.

But it's the outside space that's getting us really hot under the collar. Surrounding a glorious pool, you'll discover courtyard gardens that feel like your own riad oasis. The attention to detail is astonishing – with little vignettes of mosaics and lanterns everywhere you look and a sea of coloured floor cushions waiting for you to dive right in.

Replete with places to catch some sun, this home in Albufeira first caught our attention with its rooftop terrace and stunning pool. Three of the four bedrooms here are twins, making this home ideal for a group of friends or families with plenty of kids but perhaps less suitable for a couples' trip. And while there is a fee for using the air conditioning, the home has plenty of outdoor spaces where you can catch a breeze, and there's that inviting pool, too. Nearby you'll find plenty of restaurants and bars, while sandy beaches are within walking distance.

Sunbather on the Roof

If you were to cross the sea in a straight line due south from this villa on the Algarve coast, you'd eventually reach Morocco and it's clear that this home's design has been influenced by its cross-continental neighbour.

Inside, this can be seen with the ogee-shaped light fittings and artwork, but it's the Berber-style tent area outside that captures the spirit of North Africa best. Here, it's possible to escape the hottest part of the afternoon on a comfy pouffe or to relax after dinner with a session on the shisha pipe.

Elsewhere outside, guests will find a long swimming pool, an outdoor kitchen and an alfresco dining table on the green-tiled terrace. There are even covered balconies leading off from some of the bedrooms where you can look out over the rooftops of nearby Galé.

There's no shortage of beaches in this corner of the world, with Praia dos Calvoeiros only six minutes' walk away. Albufeira and its Old Town take just over ten minutes to reach in the car, too.

This southern Portuguese home boasts a luscious garden and a private swimming pool as well as a covered alfresco dining area – perfect for taking advantage of the brick-built barbecue and Algarvian sunshine. While the interior aesthetics won’t appeal to everyone, this family-friendly home is both comfortable and functional, with three of the four bedrooms comprising twin beds. Location-wise, it’s also pretty handy – Praia da Galé is the nearest beach and there’s a good selection of local eateries within a short stroll.

A Casa Da Fazenda

Casa das Tilias is a stunning villa located in a quiet residential area on the outskirts of the popular resort of Gale. It has been completely renovated in 2019 to an impressive standard, with elegant design and luxurious furnishings throughout. The property features a fabulous 11m by 4m private pool, extensive poolside terrace, and private full-size enclosed tennis court. Upstairs, the villa's accommodation has an airy atmosphere with each bedroom individually styled and boasting bold, oversized headboards and opulent bed linen. All rooms have their own balcony overlooking the pool and gardens. On the ground floor is an open-plan lounge and dining room exuding style and sophistication. The owner has also provided Bluetooth speakers in the ceiling lights, a fully fitted kitchen with high gloss cabinetry, a plush sofa for relaxation, and a striking glass dining table to linger over meals. Outside, there is an alfresco cooking area with stone BBQ and shaded gazebo tucked away beneath the olive trees in the gardens. Guests are free to pick from the palms, hibiscus, nut, and fruit trees in season. There are numerous shops, bars and restaurants within walking distance, while Gale beach with its soft golden sand is only minutes away by car.

For us, this home is all about the location. The traditional style of its interiors may not tick everyone’s boxes, but it’s comfortable for eight guests with each bedroom boasting an en-suite. For children and adults alike, the swimming pool and basement games room provide plenty of entertainment, while for days out, it’s just a hop, skip and jump to Galé beach, perfect for families and those who love a splash of watersports.

Although light-filled, the interiors feel a little dated and yet with so much on offer outside – including a private pool, two alfresco dining areas and a rooftop terrace – in the sunshine is where you’ll want to be. What’s more, this villa’s location will suit those wanting to spend time out and about. Situated in Sao Rafael, within a short walk of the beach and local eateries, you’re also a 5-minute drive from Salgados Golf Course and approximately a 10-minute drive from the popular resort of Albufeira. 

Sea Daze

Located right at the heart of Albufeira, this villa is pretty impressive. The popular beaches of Castelo and Evaristo are within walking distance – as are plenty of shops and eateries – but this home has more going for it than just location. There’s heaps of room for a group, including a second lounge upstairs that would be ideal for kids to claim as their own – they’ll also have table tennis and a pool table to keep them entertained. Outside, the choice of covered terraces, quiet balconies, and poolside daybeds will appeal to those wanting a laid-back stay. 

Pretty in Portugal

In Albufeira's gorgeous São Rafael, this stunning villa is well-equipped for a fabulous stay. The large private pool, heated for an additional cost, is surrounded by sun loungers and a barbecue area for alfresco dining. All the bedrooms and living areas benefit from air conditioning, and while the style is a little plain in some rooms, in the basement you'll find a fun-filled entertainment area complete with a billiards table and bar. Beaches, shops, restaurants, and bars all are within a twenty-minute walk. That said, you may want a car for ease – especially if you plan to explore further afield.

Situated in the suburbs of Albufeira, this villa is a family-friendly base from which to explore the Algarve. Praia da Coelha is within walking distance, and there’s a smattering of restaurants on the doorstep. In the garden, you’ll find a private pool for keeping cool in the warmer months and a dining terrace for meals alfresco. Interior design-wise, this isn’t the most eye-catching home in our collection, but there’s ample storage in the bedrooms, so you won’t need to pack light.

This white-washed villa puts Albufeira at your fingertips. The marina is a short stroll away, golden beaches are a five-minute drive, and Old Town's restaurants, shops and cafes are twenty minutes on foot. Not a bad spot to call home. The garden is perfect for enjoying afternoon swims in the pool (which can be heated for a cost) as well as alfresco meals under the stars. Inside, the single beds can convert into doubles to suit your needs, and the lower-level games room has a sofa bed that can sleep the ninth and tenth guests for an additional fee.

Alabaster Summer

Just a short distance from the Galé area and only a five-minute walk from its sandy beaches, this home is an ideal base for those looking to explore the Algarve. With an outdoor living set-up like this, it's likely you'll want to spend as much time as possible by the private pool, sunbathing or dining at the covered alfresco dining and barbecue area. The kids will also be entertained at the outdoor games area with a snooker table and ping pong. It's worth noting here that at full capacity, two guests will be sleeping on non-permanent sleeping arrangements, including sofa beds in the communal areas. The villa is nearby to restaurants, supermarkets, and beaches of Lourenço and Galé.
