A short walk from the beach, this villa in the Algarve's Benagil offers stunning sea views and an idyllic living set up for a large family or group of friends looking to balance a sociable stay with some rest and relaxation. The main indoor living area opens onto a vast outdoor space featuring a private heated swimming pool, a sun terrace and an alfresco dining area with a built-in barbecue. And with local beaches, supermarkets and restaurants within walking distance, you'll have the town's attractions at your fingertips here. However, if you're keen to explore other beaches and areas of the Algarve, renting a car will be a good idea. 

Algarve Sunshine

Offering far-reaching sea views and situated just a short walk from the sandstone cliff-backed beach, this central Carvoeiro is superbly situated to make the most of a sun-soaked break to the breathtaking Algarve coast.

Wake up each morning to the sound of the waves lapping at the shore, as you sip a coffee on the spacious balcony out front and watch the town come to life around you. Step back through the sliding doors and you'll find a recently renovated living space and kitchen that is both casual and contemporary – the perfect match for your beachside setting. 

In the bedroom, an abundance of storage space helps maintain the relaxed minimalist style, while a vast super king-size bed guarantees a comfortable night's sleep. In addition, floor-to-ceiling sliding doors offer easy access to the balcony.

The former fishing village of Carvoeiro boasts one of the finest beaches along this picturesque stretch of the coast. However, there's more on offer than soaking up the sun on its golden sands. Those with a sense of adventure might like to embark on a boat trip to the magnificent Benagil cave. Alternatively, why not rise early and set out on the 12km out-and-back Sete Vales trail, with its spectacular clifftop coastal vistas.

La Petite Sardine

With communal gardens, two shared swimming pools – one of which is specifically for children – and a playground, this Alvor apartment is an ideal choice for families. Sure, its traditional and fuss-free style may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but the outdoor space makes up for it. The private terrace is just the spot for a morning coffee, followed by a refreshing swim in the pool. Suitably rejuvenated, golfers can then take their pick of local courses, or you can plan a family day out at the beach. Being less of a tourist trap than some other Algarve hotspots, Alvor is just the ticket for a relaxing Portuguese getaway.

At the foot of Castelo de Ferragudo, this former carriage house is now a contemporary retreat in the heart of town. Not only are you close to restaurants, nightlife and shops in the city centre, but you're also a mere two-minute walk from Praia Grande beach. You'd never be able to tell this home's history from the sleek and modern interiors. There's plenty of room, but we think it's a tight fit for all sixteen guests – especially since some of the bedrooms are on the smaller side. Outside is a sparkling pool and alfresco dining space. Why not kick your holiday up a notch and hire a private chef to do all the cooking for you?

With the beach in Carvoeiro nearby, you can easily get your sea fix and dine out on local cuisine, with a great array of eateries nestled next to the sandy shores.

This cool, cavernous home belonging to the Dutch artist Eric de Bruijn brings all the wow-factor –⁠ and an impressive location to boot. It's slap-bang in the heart of Portimão and just a fifteen-minute stroll from the beach. 

Carefully-curated artworks adorn the walls, and Moroccan and Portuguese objets d'art unite the space – all spread out over three floors of sheer luxury. Spill out in the large, open-plan living area for pre-dinner cocktails – the polished concrete floors keep things cool and airy. Whip up delicious meals in not one but two chef-worthy kitchens and outdoor cooking areas. Or let a private chef take the reins for the evening as you gather your ensemble around the vast dining table - the unified Sonos system will help set the mood. 

Stepping outside, you'll discover your very own Moorish oasis in the city. Cool off in the riad-inspired inky black courtyard pool or soak up the sun on the dusty-pink terraces adorned in plants and cacti. And as dusk settles over the rooftops, head up to the vast roof terrace for alfresco dining beneath the pergola. You could easily keep the night flowing here with drinks around the fire pit. When you finally venture out, head over to Michelin-starred restaurant Vista, where you can savour flavours and views of the Atlantic, or mosey into the historic heart of Portimão to soak up the local culture amidst the array of local eateries and bars. Staying in this Algarve home gives you easy access to one of the region’s most beautiful beaches (Praia dos Três Irmãos is a five-minute stroll away), along with a communal pool and neighbourhood tennis courts. There’s also a private terrace and plenty of space for relaxing inside and out. It’s worth noting that the rooms are slightly dated, but it's family-friendly and there’s an adjoining annexe with two bedrooms. From here, it’s possible to walk to the restaurants and amenities in Alvor, plus it’s also within easy reach of the nearby golf courses. 

A Hundred Ways

This cosy apartment is situated in Portimão. At full capacity, two guests will sleep on the pull-out sofa bed in the living room, and you'll have everything you need for a simple and comfortable stay. The balcony has enough space to sit out with a drink, and being on the eighth floor means you'll have some lovely views of the sea and beach. We think this is a great spot for families – on top of being so close to Três Castelos Beach, there's a fenced communal pool and a range of children's equipment available for an additional fee.

The Buttercup

Attractive and elegant, this villa is a dreamy choice for a Portuguese escape. It’s located in Ferraguda, a 500-year-old fishing village across the bridge from Portimão. Praia Grande is a few minutes away on foot, and there are countless other beaches along the coastline. The villa boasts Atlantic Ocean views, which can be admired from the terrace and the alfresco dining area. Your host can arrange for a private chef to dazzle your guests while you whip up a round of cocktails.
