Sitting close to the point at which Trás-os-Montes crosses over to the famed Alto-Douro wine region, this nine-hectare oak forest was abandoned in the middle of the 20th century and mother nature allowed to run her course. That is until 2010 when the farmhouse hidden away on the site was almost completely reconstructed into this incredible holiday home.

There are a few stone walls and wooden beams that hark back to this history, but otherwise, it's a strikingly modern affair, with a stylish collection of artwork, decorative items and furnishings waiting to be discovered throughout the space. There are so many aspects you're sure to be enamoured by as you take a tour, from the minimalist kitchen to the freestanding tub in the master bathroom.

That's not to forget the fabulous amenities here, either. If you're after a dose of relaxation, you're in luck – not only is there an indoor swimming pool, there's a sauna and Jacuzzi to retire to afterwards. There's also a fair bit of outside space for making the most of sunny weather, including a terrace with seating.

Plus, there's a whole range of distractions that lie nearby, too. Parque Natural do Alvão is a short drive away if you're ever in the mood for long rambles through scenic Portuguese countryside, while there are a number of towns close by – Vila Real and Régua among them – in which you can get acquainted with the region's rich gastronomic traditions.

There’s no price for guessing what the city of Porto is famous for. However, you may be surprised to find that this fortified wine begins its life far from the city, in the vineyards found upstream and on either side of the river Douro, and it’s here where you’ll find this eye-catching villa. Overlooking the slopes of Portugal’s wine region, this home boasts panoramic views that are almost impossible to tear your eyes away from. At sunset, make a beeline for the infinity pool that stretches out across the width of the house. There’s a second heated swimming pool to the side, best reached through the open-plan living and dining room. Take a dip beneath a starlit sky or sunbathe during the day. Floor-to-ceiling sliding doors and windows can be found from the kitchen to the three bedrooms, effortlessly bridging the indoors and outside. The best views can be found from the balcony on the first floor. Since this area has been granted UNESCO World Heritage status, you’ll find that there’s plenty of exploring and hiking to do. But there’s also fun to be had at home on a rainy afternoon – challenge the group to a championship of billiards and table football and may the best team win.

We think it's worth having a car here for getting around with ease, but if you don't drive, fear not. This restored farmhouse sits in the nature-rich Portuguese region of Minho, encircled by valleys, sparkling rivers, plenty of cycling routes, and historical towns. You get a beautiful slice of that breathtaking nature from your countryside oasis. 

Whether you’re playing football on the soft grass, admiring the view from the terrace, or listening to the birds chatter while lying around the pool, nature is all around. You’re even welcomed by bougainvillea and cypress trees as you approach the stone brick home.

You’ll first notice the home’s traditional façade. Made up of three houses, two of which have long histories – the main house was a baker's, and the annexe, now a games room, was a distillery. Make use of the original bread and pizza oven for unforgettable meals, and whittle away evenings playing pool and drinking local wine. 

There’s plenty to keep you entertained here, but perhaps all you really want is to catch up on your book beside the pool. Let the hours drift by, breathing in the fresh country air while topping up your tan. Come dusk, the place to be is your balcony – nothing beats watching the sun dip into the sea. 

When it’s time to explore, you’re less than a mile from Afife and its beachy cafes, surf shops, seafood restaurants, and long stretch of sugary white sand. When you’re not catching waves or relaxing on the beach, hop on a hiking trail to one of the nearby waterfalls and discover the rugged mountain range.

Evenings can be spent sweating away the stress in your private sauna, replicating Portuguese favourites in the traditional covered outdoor churrasco, or simply absorbing every aspect of that phenomenal panoramic vista with a glass of Vinho Verde in hand. Explore the local town of Esposende where you will find fantastic fish restaurants serving up the freshest seafood. Or, make the short 30-minute drive to the historic city of Oporto – the centre of which is classified as a World Heritage Site. The sand beaches of this part of the Portuguese coastline are under four kilometres away too, so grab the suncream and a beach towel and get out there for a day of sun, sea, and unbridled relaxation (as well as some high-octane watersports if you like). In the mood for more activity? Then there is both golf and horse riding on offer in the local area.

We have to say we think the garden is the ideal spot to begin mornings over fresh coffee and locally bought pastéis de nata and to end evenings with caipirinha cocktails under the starlit sky.
