If you’re anything like us, you’ll spend most of your time outside, swimming in the private pool and lounging in the sunshine. Sitting close to the point at which Trás-os-Montes crosses over to the famed Alto-Douro wine region, this nine-hectare oak forest was abandoned in the middle of the 20th century and mother nature allowed to run her course. That is until 2010 when the farmhouse hidden away on the site was almost completely reconstructed into this incredible holiday home.

There are a few stone walls and wooden beams that hark back to this history, but otherwise, it's a strikingly modern affair, with a stylish collection of artwork, decorative items and furnishings waiting to be discovered throughout the space. There are so many aspects you're sure to be enamoured by as you take a tour, from the minimalist kitchen to the freestanding tub in the master bathroom.

That's not to forget the fabulous amenities here, either. If you're after a dose of relaxation, you're in luck – not only is there an indoor swimming pool, there's a sauna and Jacuzzi to retire to afterwards. There's also a fair bit of outside space for making the most of sunny weather, including a terrace with seating.

Plus, there's a whole range of distractions that lie nearby, too. Parque Natural do Alvão is a short drive away if you're ever in the mood for long rambles through scenic Portuguese countryside, while there are a number of towns close by – Vila Real and Régua among them – in which you can get acquainted with the region's rich gastronomic traditions.

There’s no price for guessing what the city of Porto is famous for. However, you may be surprised to find that this fortified wine begins its life far from the city, in the vineyards found upstream and on either side of the river Douro, and it’s here where you’ll find this eye-catching villa. Overlooking the slopes of Portugal’s wine region, this home boasts panoramic views that are almost impossible to tear your eyes away from. At sunset, make a beeline for the infinity pool that stretches out across the width of the house. There’s a second heated swimming pool to the side, best reached through the open-plan living and dining room. Take a dip beneath a starlit sky or sunbathe during the day. Floor-to-ceiling sliding doors and windows can be found from the kitchen to the three bedrooms, effortlessly bridging the indoors and outside. The best views can be found from the balcony on the first floor. Since this area has been granted UNESCO World Heritage status, you’ll find that there’s plenty of exploring and hiking to do. But there’s also fun to be had at home on a rainy afternoon – challenge the group to a championship of billiards and table football and may the best team win.

Inspired by organic living, the clever owners have created a simple sanctuary where locally sourced furnishings and art sit alongside contemporary comforts. The garden features a private infinity pool and access to the Corgo River. There’s also a rustic wine cellar which can be used for events (upon request), and an independent studio sleeping four guests – making this the ideal location for groups to enjoy privacy and quality time together. 

The Gentle Earth

With commanding views of the rural Douro and an infinity pool, this expansive villa is a dream holiday destination. Inside, multiple balconies and windows mean those stunning views are always in sight. 

The home has five bedrooms, each with their own bathroom, a dedicated kid’s pool and gardens – it's the ideal base for families travelling together. The interior is bright and offers plenty of space to relax and enjoy communal meals and movie nights.  

Days begin with pasteis de nata on the terrace – the hosts drop off fresh baked goods for breakfast every morning – followed by lazy hours by the pool with a book in hand. If you can prise yourself away from your lounger, the surrounding area is fine hiking territory. 

Sunsets here are show-stoppers, so make sure you’re back in time for a cold glass on the terrace as the sky turns every shade of orange and red. Round off with a night-time dip in the pool under a sky full of stars to make the most of every minute in this Portuguese oasis.

A stay in this modern villa combines rural relaxation and keeping active all at once. Those that like to stick to a fitness schedule (or those that just want to splash about) can make use of the private indoor swimming pool, lined with loungers. There’s a saltwater sauna for afters, or perhaps you just want to head up to the terrace for a sundowner. On the same site, you’ll find a state-of-the-art gym, football field and tennis court too. There’s an element of fun to this home as well, with a children’s play park in the grounds and a full-size snooker table in one of the lounges.

That’s right, “one of” the lounges. There are three to choose from inside – the grand, chandeliered main lounge set around a fireplace, a snug with an upright piano for a sing-along, and the laid-back games room with its own bar. Bedrooms are spacious and retain an air of class with dark wood headboards. Our favourite has to be the wood-clad bedroom with trinkets and curios scattered across built-in shelves.

In terms of location, you’re in the rural area just outside Porto, yet just a fifteen-minute drive to the restaurants, historic sights and buzzing nightlife of the city centre. If you fancy a day at the beach, Arcozelo is just a ten-minute drive away.

One of the highlights of this stunning home has to be the incredible views. The outlook over the River Douro, as well as the vineyards that surrounds the entire villa, is beautiful. You can enjoy the vistas from the private pool and balconies, as well as from the large, bright open-plan living space and bedrooms, too. When you want to explore the area, the town of Peso da Régua, situated on the western edge of the port-wine region, is just over 10 kilometres away.

Fitting, as this spot in Peso da Regua is famous for its picturesque countryside and ancient vineyards. The owners have also transformed one of the old farm buildings into a gym. With fitness machines sitting alongside old stone troughs (where grapes were once pressed), this might be one of the most unique workout locations we’ve ever seen. 

Days can be spent hiking and cycling across this beautiful countryside – the village of Mesao Frio is just a short drive away, while the beautiful city of Porto is less than an hour away.

We love this home's simple design, with a charcoal and natural wood colour scheme that feels modern and fresh. You can sit around the compact dining area and tuck into tasty pastel de natas together, and there's also a kitchenette where you can make your morning cups of coffee and light lunch bites. At the end of busy times spent exploring the city, you can fall into the big cosy bed, ready to do it all again the next day.

Along the coast, there’s a promenade perfect for long walks or holiday jogs. There are also plenty of restaurants and bars in this neighbourhood for dining on fresh seafood after a long day, and the city centre is best reached by bus (the ride averages around forty minutes) or by car (around fifteen minutes). Inside the home, you’ll find a row of windows in the living room that open to sea views and fresh air, bringing a beachy atmosphere into the modern, stylish space. The open-plan living area beams with natural light illuminating the light wood parquet floors and furniture, creating a breezy atmosphere for unwinding. The master bedroom features sea views too (and an en-suite). If you are looking to explore the delights of the Portuguese coast, you really couldn’t ask for much more.

The walls are made from stone, lit up by the daylight that pours in through the large windows in the living space. This apartment is an excellent base in Porto. It boasts a terrace so feels like a peaceful retreat from the hustle and bustle of the city, but it’s right in the thick of things – you get the best of both worlds here. You can easily walk to the cathedral and lots of other key sights, and you’ll be just six minutes from the Campo 24 de Agosto metro and bus station. The apartment is simple yet comfortable, with lots of light that makes it a tranquil space to return to. One guest will be sleeping on a sofa bed, though – if you’d prefer more room for socialising, we’d stick to a guest count of four. 

Romantic Getaway

With easy access to a whole host of iconic Porto attractions, this cosy apartment is perfect for those wanting to drop off their suitcases and head straight out to explore. Space is limited here, as you’d expect with a studio, but it’s comfortable for a couple on a city break. The kitchenette is best suited to light bites, but with such a central location, while you may have a little street noise to contend with, you’ll find local eateries to dine out with ease. 

Sleek Nook

Base yourself right in the heart of Porto's buzzy downtown at this practical studio apartment. With all the sightseeing hotspots, including the foodie-haven Mercado do Bolhão and the historic Lello bookshop just a stroll away, you can easily explore the city on foot. Or hop on the nearby Trindade Metro – a five-minute walk away. While the apartment is not the most charming of spaces, there's everything you need for a short stay in the city. The compact kitchenette has a coffee pod machine for morning brews, and the sleek, modern shower room will give your day a kickstart.

With its feet right in the sand, this crisp and modern apartment is as close to the beach as you can get. Windows perfectly frame the Atlantic – morning espressos accompany views of gentle white rollers – and at supper, the sun drops into the ocean right before your eyes at the strategically placed dining table. The interior takes inspiration from its surroundings – it’s all natural textures, splashes of cobalt blue, pale ochre and cream. We were particularly fond of the Crittall-style partition and plaster effect walls, adding an urban edge to the laidback design. After long lie-ins and lazy breakfasts, step outside and you’re a mere 180 metres from the seashore. Praia do Carneiro comes alive in the summer with fishermen lining the jetty and locals strolling the promenade. But it’s a dramatic affair when it’s stormy, with huge waves crashing over the lighthouse. Bars, restaurants, cafes and the Mercado da Foz – selling traditional Porto fare – cluster around Foz do Douro, a five-minute walk away. Plus, the bohemian Porto with its medieval Ribeira district and sumptuous wine is reached in ten minutes by car.
