Getting lost in Mouraria's winding streets is a trip into the past, and part of the neighbourhood's authentic appeal. The Azure Terrace is situated in a house typical for the neighbourhood, which means that the outside (in stark contrast to the home itself) is a bit scruffy. The Azure Terrace is a home with all the features we want to see in a Lisbon Plum home – a private terrace, cute rustic design with lots of modern features and plenty of natural light. The abundance of fado shown in the vicinity is just a bonus.

Lisbon is having a moment right now. The beating heart of Portugal, this glossy tile-lined city boasts glittering sea views, a rich history and a mouth-watering foodie culture. Hours and hours can be spent wandering the narrow, cobbled streets, hopping on and off trams, sipping port in the street and clutching warm pastéis de nata in brown paper bags. This recently renovated apartment could not be more perfectly placed. Situated in a 100-year-old building, with the 11th century Castelo de São Jorge as your neighbour, it offers an interior that's streamlined and functional, enriched by little historical features an expert's eye can immediately pick out – there’s even Portuguese marble in the bathroom. We really love the sunny terrace with views of the castle – take a hot coffee out here and watch the world go by.

With a commanding position looking out over Lisbon's red-tiled roofs, this Alfama apartment offers a dash of urban fun with plenty of functionality. The home's corner position in the building means there is natural light from several sides here, and we love the small balcony – with the stunning views, this is no generic I-could-be-anywhere home, as you'll definitely know you're in Lisbon. It has the local atmosphere of an old neighbourhood – full of shops, butchers, restaurants and cafes, while still being central to the sights of the city. Hop on the legendary yellow tram 28, which passes 100 metres in front of the home, and ride it to the top of Lisbon’s hills to admire the city’s architectural treasures. You’re only a twelve-minute walk from the beautiful buildings and streets of Alfama, where Lisbon’s charm is sure to take hold of you.

The National Pantheon, Sé Cathedral and São Jorge Castle lie minutes away, and Feira da Ladra, the famous flea market, operates close by. Although the apartment is compact, it has enough room for a small family, and there's a balcony – with fantastic city views, no less – where you can enjoy alfresco breakfasts or late-night drinks. You also have all of Lisbon at your feet, but it's worth mentioning it's a steep walk back up to the home, plus another flight of steps to reach the first floor – luckily, there's a tram stop nearby.

Although this home was built with functionality in mind, we found plenty to love about The Writer's Corne beyond its on-point location in Lisbon. Nestled in one of the most diverse neighbourhoods in Lisbon, Mouraria's narrow and colourful streets will show you a different side of the capital. Minimal interiors, soft furnishings and a laid-back design aesthetic give way to lots of natural light flooding through the space.  At the edge of the dining area, there's a great little spot with a chair and desk, flooded with light – perfect for writing your travel memoir or remote working. With the master bedroom featuring its own en-suite bathroom, leaving the main bathroom for the other guests - this home truly is the perfect spot for a small group of friends who want to lap up Lisbon with pure ease and comfort. For days of downtime and relaxation, make the most of the resident-only terrace and infinity pool that offers a breathtaking view of the historic São Jorge Castle. Head to the stunning Jardim da Cerca da Graça park, only a four-minute walk away for a coffee with some fresh air, before weaving in and out of the quaint streets of Mouraria or hopping on the tramway to venture further afield.

Of course, those areas attract visitors for a reason, and you're well within a ten-to-twenty-five minute walk of most of the city's headline attractions, including Sé de Lisboa, Praça do Comercio and Convento do Carmo. However, for an authentic taste of Lisbon, there are plenty of classic cafes and local restaurants closer to home that will charge you a lot less by dint of not being in the centre.

Once you're inside the apartment, you'll be greeted by a stunning open-plan space with a bench seating area, a six-seater dining table and a sleek wooden kitchen. A polished concrete floor only adds to the contemporary aesthetic, while the balcony offers a partial panorama over the city. While the inside is certainly on the more compact side, there’s plenty of light and warmth here to make up for the small size. Come inside to find an open-plan living and dining area, with a snuggly window seating area and a table where you can savour your communal meals or catch up on any work you may have outstanding. We think the kitchen is better suited for rustling up lighter bites, rather than elaborate feats, but with an abundance of fantastic restaurants on your doorstep, this shouldn’t be a problem. Get a good night’s rest in either of the home’s two bedrooms and wake up to the lovely views of the city – after breakfast, get ready to head out and discover all that Lisbon has to offer.

Located in the Graça neighbourhood of Lisbon, this spot offers views across the Tagus River and Lisbon's National Pantheon. Just a four-minute walk from the nearest supermarket and Portuguese bakery, the balcony terrace makes an idyllic little spot to sit with your morning coffee and pastries overlooking the city's rooftops. However, it's worth noting that the kitchen is small, and its compact layout makes it difficult to cook more substantial meals. Conveniently, the bedrooms feature air conditioning, although we think the fourth bedroom (with a double sofa bed) is better suited to one guest rather than two.

And as far as bedroom/living spaces go, this one is right up there. We love the swallow-themed decoration above the bed, eclectic prints gallery wall and streams of natural light coming in through the balcony doors. You'll be staying in one of Lisbon's most authentic neighbourhoods, with easy access to the Sé de Lisboa (a sixteen-minute stroll) and numerous Fado houses in the area – we should mention that the Moorish Quarter (a five-minute walk) is superbly photogenic. Soak up the atmosphere as you pass idiosyncratic boutiques and sip homemade coffees along windy cobbled streets. It's a lovely spot to see Lisbon from, whether you're a first-timer or back for seconds, thirds (fourths?).

From the crotchet tablecloth to the wicker chairs and exposed stone walls, there's a lot of lovely traditional charm in this home. Set in the Graça neighbourhood, it feels quintessentially Portuguese, with antique furniture and an eclectic interior. The cosy kitchen is strung with pots, pans and old branches, while two living spaces host velvet sofas, towering bookcases and intimate writing desks. The bedrooms are similarly retro, with parquet flooring, maps on the walls and heavy wooden shutters to keep out the hustle and bustle from the cobbled streets below. The charms of the capital are in easy reach, though you can get a taste of the atmosphere just as well from the roof area. Overlooking terracotta roofs and out towards the ocean, the terrace has loungers and a dining set, perfect for alfresco drinks come evening.

If you’re looking to experience an authentic side to Lisbon, this home in Graça is the ideal spot. From its polished wood floors to its sloped ceilings and large windows, chic meets comfort in this dazzlingly bright home. We love the living room’s French doors that open out onto a private balcony – ideal for mornings over coffee and a pastel de nata, or watching the sunset over the city’s red rooftops. The bedrooms, meanwhile, are simple yet quirkily fun, with pieces of fun modern art (hello Koons-style dog) that give them plenty of character. We were particularly fond of the master bedroom with its angled ceiling and steps leading out onto a viewing ledge with views of the neighbouring azulejo-clad buildings. With plenty of quiet corners to curl up in with a good book and a snazzy modern kitchen in which to cook up feasts (when you’re not sampling the local foodie hotspots), you’ll have everything you need for a blissfully relaxing stay. Outside of your home, you’re just a five-minute walk from the Miradouro da Senhora do Monte viewing point with its glorious views, a fifteen-minute stroll from the Alfama and São Jorge Castle, as well as a twenty-minute walk from the Santa Justa Lift.

Situated in Lisbon's Graça neighbourhood, this apartment is ideal for a city break. Furry friends are welcome for an additional fee and the main bedroom enjoys its own en-suite for that bit of extra privacy. There are several Juliet balconies here – while not big enough to sit out on, they bring the vibrant sights and sounds of the city indoors. You can expect some outside noise here, but it's nothing some ear plugs won't fix and you'll find an array of restaurants and shops right on your doorstep. Public transport is within easy reach if you don't drive, but you'll have an allocated parking spot.

Start your day at the Senhora do Monte viewpoint, located right next to the apartment. From here you can walk onto Castelo de S. Jorge – stopping off for some obligatory pastel de nata on your way.

There's a fully-stocked kitchen that makes cooking a breeze, and your hosts are also more than happy to arrange exciting extras like breakfast delivery, home massages, surf lessons, a cruise on the Tagus and even helicopter rides. Though you're a bit far from Praça do Comércio and the city centre (it's a fifteen-minute bus ride), staying in Graça is worth it. You'll find colourful houses, local restaurants making traditional Portuguese fare and independent shops nestled amongst the cobblestone alleyways. Picture Perfect

Freshly renovated, this beautiful apartment is the kind of Lisbon home we daydream about. In a period building typical of this ancient part of the city, it's been lovingly brought into the 21st century by owners who clearly care about the quality of the finish. The characteristic Pombalina wooden cage of the stone building shows itself in the open-plan living space. Invented after the great earthquake of the 1750s, it's an architectural structure to ensure stability. It also happens to look really cool. You may also spot some other historic features in the home – an old salting trough in one of the bathrooms, a huge stone fireplace in a bedroom and antique recovered tiles made into large panels that adorn the corridors. At the same time, it's a smart, modern home with luxurious furnishings, and an on-trend black and marble kitchen. We love the views over Lisbon's rooftops from the balcony too. When you're ready to explore you'll be a five-minute walk to Praça do Comércio, which opens up to the Tagus river. The stylish neighbourhood of Chiado is a ten-minute walk away, as are the Ribeira Market and Campo das Cebolas.

Poetic Form

This home feels comfortable, high-end, and characterful. It’s hard to ask for more, but we picked it apart and here’s what we found. The Handhake's baren bones are great – this home is located inside a renovated Baixa townhouse, which has high ceilings and French windows as standard, but the host didn’t rely solely on that. There are a few nice pieces of art in here, notably the statuettes and the mirrors in the bedroom, which give it a modern look.

The Handshake

Perched on top of a renovated townhouse, View & Walkability boasts a fantastic location and a great view from the balcony. Rua de São Nicolau is within walking distance to all the central sights, restaurants, and cafes – but the central location does translate to a vibrant atmosphere that won't suit those who are looking for a tranquil stay. Our favourite hangout spot in this home is the balcony, which is great for a morning coffee, but even on rainy days, the living room gets great natural light. We also loved the eclectic design that mixes the old and new.

View & Walkability

Situated in the Lisbon neighbourhood of Santa Catarina, this apartment is bursting with character – much like the surrounding city itself. 

The open living area is wonderfully bright thanks to the row of French doors that run along one wall, which open out to a succession of Juliet balconies whenever you're in need of a burst of fresh air. We like that the design is contemporary but far from cookie-cutter, with lots of unique touches, like the fetching chequered TV stand and the timberwork separating the cooking quarters. It's a similar story in the bedrooms, one of which has a walk-in wardrobe that will really sing to fashionistas paying a visit.

When it comes to seeing a little more of the Portuguese capital, the central location means that you don't have far to walk to reach attractions. The buzzy food stalls in the Mercado da Ribeira are 800 metres from the front door and there are fantastic views to be had from Miradouro de Santa Catarina half that distance away.

Housed in a historic building in Lisbon’s peaceful, hilly Lapa neighbourhood, this bright apartment is the ideal base for those looking to experience a more local side of the city. Inside, wood floors, corniced ceilings and French doors leading onto a Juliet balcony create an elegant first impression, while the laid-back bohemian furnishings make you instantly feel welcome and relaxed. We love the sunny dining area here, perfect for starting mornings off over breakfast as the breeze flows through the doors, and the cosy kitchen area with its blackboard wall. The bedrooms feel soothing in their neutral, natural tones, while the large windows give way to views of the Tagus River and the city's emblematic red rooftops. . When you’re not relaxing at home, go out and explore your surroundings. You’re just a ten-minute walk from the beautiful Estrela Gardens, while a twenty-minute stroll will take you to the famous Time Out Market Lisboa. You’re also just a twenty-minute walk from the bohemian Bairro Alto district, where cobblestone streets house centuries-old houses, vivid street art and traditional Fado bars that wait to be discovered. 


Lapa Up The Views

Historic Alfama, with its medieval warren of streets, is just a twelve-minute walk from this modern home, while the chic boutiques of Chiado are a fifteen-minute saunter. The harbour-facing square, Praça do Comércio, on the other hand, is a mere four-minute stroll and is surrounded by an array of eateries – your host can make restaurant reservations for you if you wish. It's the same walking distance to Sé de Lisboa, the city's beautiful cathedral – although you don't have to go anywhere to admire it, you can see it from this stylish apartment's windows. It's plain to see this gorgeous home belongs to a designer. The generous space is furnished with standout pieces of furniture and fabulous modern art. If you don't fancy eating out, whip up a Portuguese feast in the kitchen and enjoy it at your dining table – this place is perfect for entertaining.

The Creative Process

Look in any direction at this home and you’ll have the Tejo river or São Vicente de Fora waiting for you in all their beauty. The terraces here are practically private viewpoints where you can bask in the sun and admire the entire city – enjoy a meal at the picnic-style table or lounge on the Adirondacks (which double as a spectacular sunset spot). Honestly, in a city known for its miradouros, (meaning viewpoints in Portuguese), it’s possible that you might not find a better one than your own personal terrace. Inside, there's another kind of grandeur with marble floors and fireplaces, rattan bedroom walls and terracotta floor tiles creating an elegant, shabby chic vibe to the penthouse. And lest we forget to mention, you’ll be staying within the walls of Castelo São Jorge. Discover the historic heart of the city, where you can explore many of the cities’ churches and sights on foot along with local seafood restaurants, Portuguese cafes and traditional Fado houses.

This beautifully bright apartment between Lisbon's Chiado and Alfama neighbourhoods has it all – a great location and a blend of modern styling and character features. Summing up this historic part of Lisbon perfectly, it's in a typical Pombalina building – freshly renovated with impeccable attention to detail.
