That said, the local bus service makes hopping around the area a breeze, and if you do hire a car, further afield you’ll find a whole host of golf courses and water parks. After a busy day, back at the villa sun-drenched terraces and a private pool await, ready for you to finish the day relaxed, with a drink in hand.

We love the generosity of this home when it comes to space to spread out as a family – it’s a sociable space, but with two living areas, there’s space for the adults to gather and enjoy quiet conversation over a bottle of wine, and a separate space for your little ones to kick back on their own comfy sofas and make the most of their games console. A sleek kitchen provides everything you need to rustle up a delicious dinner if you fancy an evening at home, and still allows you to peek out at the ocean. 

If you’re not out exploring Lagos and its welcoming beaches where water sports are a must, you can while away the hours easily in this home. Gain some respite from the Portuguese heat and sink into your private pool, swim a few lengths and you’ll soon feel re-energised. You'll have not one but three separate pools here, giving you the luxury of choice when it comes to cooling off after a day on the coast. The first is completely private, whilst the other two form part of the resort's spa. There's also a communal gym, Jacuzzi and sauna – we recommend starting your morning here to set you up for the day ahead.

Spend time surfing, exploring rock pools or even catching a boat to Lagos from the harbour – there are plenty of ways to discover this beautiful part of the world and soak up the glorious weather.

Just a sixteen-minute drive from glitzy Lagos, there are plenty of options when it comes to shopping, dining and nightlife, both in Luz's charming town centre or further afield. But if you'd rather take things at a slower pace, Praia da Luz is about ten minutes on foot – perfect for a spot of sunbathing on the sand and swimming in the Atlantic Ocean.  

In between Algarve explorations, relax in style at this breezy townhouse. Wake up in the light-filled main bedroom and pad immediately out to the south-facing balcony to enjoy your cup of coffee in the fresh air. The sparkling sea view is a bonus – we can't think of a better way to start the day than gazing out at the ocean blue. Come evening, tuck into an alfresco Portuguese feast on the sun-dappled patio, enjoying a bottle of wine and good conversation as the sun slowly sinks overhead. Afterwards, unwind in the contemporary living room before bed, taking turns on the telescope to spot glittering stars, planets and constellations – you can even light the wood-burning fire for extra ambience.

Occupying a peaceful spot just outside Lagos town centre, this family-friendly home is a refreshing coastal escape. There’s a sheltered garden, a private pool (heated upon request) and a covered pergola with a 'big green egg' barbecue – perfect for lingering sunset meals. It’s also extremely well located, with restaurants, bars and shops just a twenty-five-minute walk away. Meia Praia beach is also within walking distance, although we recommend hiring a car if you’d like to explore the beautiful beaches further along the coast.

Cool and contemporary, this apartment is based just 100 metres from the beach in Praia da Rocha, and just a short drive from the heart of Portimão, making it ideal for beach lovers and city explorers alike. We love the decor of this home, with swinging chairs and a funky mural that make it feel warm and welcoming. A stay here means you'll have access to the shared outdoor pool and tennis court, ideal for spending days in the sunshine.

This stylish apartment is perfect for those who love being by the water, with a great choice of nearby beaches and a marina within walking distance. Splashes of colour throughout the apartment add vibrancy to every room – our favourite is the deep shades of blue in the living room. Relax on the balcony in the mornings with a toasty cup of coffee while tucking into a homecooked breakfast made with produce bought from the local Santo Amaro markets.

With just a short walk, you'll find yourself in the centre of Lagos with a wide variety of shops to browse. Treat yourself to a delicious slice of cake at one of the many central cafés, followed by a trip to the beach. Make sure you bring a bucket and spade if you're with children, so you can spend the afternoon building sandcastles under the sun.

Dine at Batata Beach Bar for some coastal delicacies and return home to unwind after a day of adventuring.
