Located thirty minutes away from the Arrábida Natural Park, this home is not only within close proximity to the protected area that covers the southernmost margin of the Setúbal Peninsula of Portugal, but also the beach that lies within it. Consecutively voted one of the best beaches in Europe, the Galapos is an inviting sandy strip, adjacent to the deep blue waters of the Atlantic, protected by rocky cliffs. Spend the day here sunbathing or splashing in the salty surf before returning home to find your own little oasis waiting for you. 

A garden brimming with trees and shrubs will be hard to ignore, but even harder still is the private pool set in the centre of it. When you’re not at the beach, this will be your prime defence against the sun’s warming gaze. Grab a cold drink as you lounge poolside, or escape to the porch where you can choose between the swing chair, hammock, or very plush garden chair to recline in. Bring out snacks when you refill your drink and stay out even as the day gives way to a balmy evening. 

Inside you’ll find more comfort awaiting and if you’re anything like us, the rustic aesthetic of this home will ease away every last bit of tension you've been holding onto. The rooms are generous, so when evening turns to night, you can all escape to your own nooks, and the loft upstairs makes a pretty cool hideaway for whoever wants that extra bit of privacy. 

The kitchen is definitely set up in a way to encourage you to try out seafood recipes at home, but no pressure at all – there’s a couple of restaurants not too far away. Lisbon is also a forty-minute drive away if you’re up for a day trip.

With a palatial façade, stunning minimalist interiors, and proximity to the poshest shopping street in Lisbon, Nova Inspirada packs quite a punch. But don't be fooled by the central location – this home is tucked away on a quiet street where you can relax on any of your many terraces, which includes the communal atrium. We tested this home in the winter, so the outside spaces don't look as appealing as they will in the summer, but the building itself hides the remains of a Roman settlement, so you'll be living and breathing history.

Tucked away in a typical street in Alfama, this apartment offers a quiet escape in one of Lisbon's most emblematic neighbourhoods. The building is on a steep hill, but the good news is, you're halfway up to the Castle already (it’s a two-minute walk away). Heading downhill takes you to the fado bars and local restaurants of the old quarter in just a few footsteps. Inside the apartment is a calming haven away from the city noise. A dash of polished cement here, wooden textures there, and an intimate bedroom that ensures a good night's sleep – the modern design works wonders with the old surroundings. It’s not often we highlight a bathroom, but this one with its wall of ferns and Japanese zen-like grey walls feels a bit special.

A welcome retreat in the very middle of the city, this Lisbon apartment is a great find. It’s set above the fray, and while you’ll never find somewhere completely silent so centrally, the calm aura of the flat goes a long way to mitigate any noise that rises up from the street below. Of course, the incredibly comfortable beds don’t hurt either. The flat also has beautiful views across the city to Se Cathedral, and while the living room isn’t huge, the windows bring in enough natural light to make it feel bigger than it is. Step out into the streets and you'll soon discover you couldn't be better placed. Many of the Portuguese capital's headline sights are within a few hundred metres, including the vast Praça do Comércio and 
Sé. Thanks to its location, there's always a buzz in Baixa and you won't have to walk far to discover neighbourhood Ginjinha kiosks, swanky rooftop bars and mouthwatering restaurants. 

Breathe In

There's more to Alfama than exploring medieval architecture and its fado legacy. Its maze-like streets are a joy to get lost in, and the nearby waterfront is a popular nightlife spot, so make sure to pack a pair of shoes for every occasion. This apartment stands out for its minimalist modern design in this historic area. There's a lot of space for you to enjoy, filled only by a few select pieces of furniture, which sets you up for a relaxing stay without lots of clutter around. There's a bedroom balcony, which isn't huge, but it does offer a brilliant view of the Sé Cathedral – which offers a taste of what the city has in store. So, lace up your trainers and set out to explore the city's seven hills. You're only a few minutes from the impressive Praça do Comércio and the grid-like shopping streets of downtown Baixa. If you fancy exploring further afield, then you're close to the Sé stop of the iconic 28 tram.

This modern studio flat perfectly suits a solo traveller or a couple wanting to explore Lisbon's vibrant culture and history. It's not the biggest, but it still has everything you need for a fuss-free stay in the capital, including a quaint kitchenette, super comfortable bed and sleek bathroom with a luxe rainfall shower. You can even spot the top of the Basilica da Estrela out the window – a rarity for a ground floor flat. But the best part about this place is the excellent location. Bairro Alto, known as Lisbon's bohemian district, is home to trendy restaurants, lively Fado bars, old-style cafes, art galleries and independent shops. Check out the many beautiful churches sprinkled across this vibrant neighbourhood, or hop on one of the iconic trams and weave your way up into the hills. While staying in the winding, cobbled streets of Alfama or Graça might be high up on the list for some visitors to Lisbon, the trendy north-east region of the city is a whole new place to explore. Just a few minutes' walk from the Vermelha metro line which can whisk you into the historic neighbourhoods with ease, this modern apartment in beautiful Bela Vista is something of a 21st-century delight.

The park from which the area gets its name from is only about ten minutes away on foot. This enormous, hilly green park is also where the annual Rock in Rio music festival takes place. And you can see it up from the view at home in this apartment block.

The panoramic windows run from the kitchen to the end of the lounge in a continuous strip. Not only does it allow for spectacular views, but also bathes the apartment in wonderful sunlight. Your decor is somewhat understated and minimalist, but this is what allows for the scenery to really be the main event. White walls and polished tiled floors create a sophisticated decor, seamlessly matched with glossy kitchen fittings. Chill a bottle vinho verde in the fridge and perch on the bar stools as you sip wine and admire the Tagus River.

Time Out Market, on the other hand, is just over ten minutes on foot – browse its shops and market vendors selling fresh food and flowers. You’ll also find over twenty restaurants and stylish music venues here (your host can make dinner reservations for you). If you don’t want to eat out, cook some local Portuguese produce from the market in the sleek kitchen – we adore this bright, open-plan space – there's a splendid socially conducive atmosphere here. Like its lovely downstairs neighbour, Quarta Bicicleta is one of the nicest homes in this part of Alfama – and trust us, we've seen many. The location at the foot of the São Jorge Castle will make sightseeing effortless, and the terrace has some pretty sweet views of the river too. With a coherent modern design and high quality furniture, the only thing we can really fault this home for are the slanting ceilings (if you're tall), and the wall art might not be to everyone's taste. 

Quarta Bicicleta

Historic Alfama, with its medieval warren of streets, is just a twelve-minute walk from this modern home, while the chic boutiques of Chiado are a fifteen-minute saunter. The harbour-facing square, Praça do Comércio, on the other hand, is a mere four-minute stroll and is surrounded by an array of eateries – your host can make restaurant reservations for you if you wish. It's the same walking distance to Sé de Lisboa, the city's beautiful cathedral – although you don't have to go anywhere to admire it, you can see it from this stylish apartment's windows. It's plain to see this gorgeous home belongs to a designer. The generous space is furnished with standout pieces of furniture and fabulous modern art. If you don't fancy eating out, whip up a Portuguese feast in the kitchen and enjoy it at your dining table – this place is perfect for entertaining.

Check yourself into this bright, clean, and modern Alfama apartment with a sunny, inviting atmosphere. The main space is well-lit and has views over the rooftops of a historic area of Lisbon – there’s even a little balcony, so you can take in the neighbourhood charm without setting foot outside. Exposed Pombalino beams offer a nice contrast to the flawlessly renovated interior. The bathroom is exceptionally sleek, with the polished concrete finish playing off nicely against the natural end grain wooden wall. Generous dining and living space makes this apartment somewhere you could spend a lot of time, and being right by the old town means there are plenty of sights to see right on your doorstep. So lace up your most comfortable trainers and get exploring the city's characterful maze of narrow cobbled streets and ancient houses interspersed with remarkable historical monuments. This building has lived a few lives since it was built in the 1940s. It was designed by the renowned Portuguese architect Manuel Norte Júnior, before being used as a garage for storing car parts. After lying unoccupied for a decade, it was then lovingly restored with a focus on high end furniture and plenty of colourful touches. We particularly enjoyed the huge terrace – not only does it come with a stylish bar where you can mix cocktails, but there’s also plenty of space for alfresco dining and spending time with your loved ones. You'll also find a unique stained glass window in the kitchen, which makes the ideal spot for enjoying morning coffee. Although it's a little out of Lisbon's city centre, the surrounding Saldanha neighborhood has plenty of local restaurants and you can walk to the downtown riverfront area in forty minutes.

Situated in one of the oldest parts of Lisbon, this charming apartment welcomes you in with open arms. Our favourite spot is the outdoor space, perfect for relaxing with a bottle of wine after a day of sightseeing – although it’s worth noting, there is a train track nearby so you may hear the occasional passing train punctuating the otherwise peaceful ambience. The homely interiors are equipped with everything you need for a comfortable stay, while the free parking is an added bonus – although if you want to travel further afield, there’s plenty of public transport close by.

You couldn't ask for a better location, nestled in the historic centre and just a five-minute stroll from the city's most photographed street, the Bica Funicular. Here, you're within walking distance of the main sights and surrounded by cafes, bars and eateries.

As far as stellar first impressions go, this home certainly delivers. You'll be smitten as soon as you arrive at its elegant azulejo-tiled entryway and ascend its sweeping staircase. The interior is a masterclass in design, striking the perfect balance between contemporary comfort and authentic charm. 

Primed for relaxation, a timeless canvas of floor-to-ceiling French doors, shiny hardwood floors, and intricately moulded high ceilings sets an ambience of calm. Stylish decor, plush upholstery and antique touches adorn the free-flowing lounge and dining room, and we love the state-of-the-art kitchen, with its shiny marble countertops, copper hardware and majestic stove. After a restful slumber in luxury linens, spend mornings roosted at the breakfast bar, tucking into coffee and pastries before slipping out to explore. 

Azulejo Atlas

Situated next to the Sé Cathedral, this compact apartment is a good choice for those looking to be in the thick of things. While some signs of wear and tear should be expected, the space is practical, with a Murphy bed comfortably sleeping a solo traveller or a couple. And what the apartment lacks in kitchen facilities, it makes up for with its close proximity to plenty of casual cafes and trendy eateries. It's also worth noting that it can get a little noisy here and it's on the fourth floor without a lift.
