Located thirty minutes away from the Arrábida Natural Park, this home is not only within close proximity to the protected area that covers the southernmost margin of the Setúbal Peninsula of Portugal, but also the beach that lies within it. Consecutively voted one of the best beaches in Europe, the Galapos is an inviting sandy strip, adjacent to the deep blue waters of the Atlantic, protected by rocky cliffs. Spend the day here sunbathing or splashing in the salty surf before returning home to find your own little oasis waiting for you. 

A garden brimming with trees and shrubs will be hard to ignore, but even harder still is the private pool set in the centre of it. When you’re not at the beach, this will be your prime defence against the sun’s warming gaze. Grab a cold drink as you lounge poolside, or escape to the porch where you can choose between the swing chair, hammock, or very plush garden chair to recline in. Bring out snacks when you refill your drink and stay out even as the day gives way to a balmy evening. 

Inside you’ll find more comfort awaiting and if you’re anything like us, the rustic aesthetic of this home will ease away every last bit of tension you've been holding onto. The rooms are generous, so when evening turns to night, you can all escape to your own nooks, and the loft upstairs makes a pretty cool hideaway for whoever wants that extra bit of privacy. 

The kitchen is definitely set up in a way to encourage you to try out seafood recipes at home, but no pressure at all – there’s a couple of restaurants not too far away. Lisbon is also a forty-minute drive away if you’re up for a day trip.

A welcome retreat in the very middle of the city, this Lisbon apartment is a great find. It’s set above the fray, and while you’ll never find somewhere completely silent so centrally, the calm aura of the flat goes a long way to mitigate any noise that rises up from the street below. Of course, the incredibly comfortable beds don’t hurt either. The flat also has beautiful views across the city to Se Cathedral, and while the living room isn’t huge, the windows bring in enough natural light to make it feel bigger than it is. Step out into the streets and you'll soon discover you couldn't be better placed. Many of the Portuguese capital's headline sights are within a few hundred metres, including the vast Praça do Comércio and 
Sé. Thanks to its location, there's always a buzz in Baixa and you won't have to walk far to discover neighbourhood Ginjinha kiosks, swanky rooftop bars and mouthwatering restaurants.

This building has lived a few lives since it was built in the 1940s. It was designed by the renowned Portuguese architect Manuel Norte Júnior, before being used as a garage for storing car parts. After lying unoccupied for a decade, it was then lovingly restored with a focus on high end furniture and plenty of colourful touches. We particularly enjoyed the huge terrace – not only does it come with a stylish bar where you can mix cocktails, but there’s also plenty of space for alfresco dining and spending time with your loved ones. You'll also find a unique stained glass window in the kitchen, which makes the ideal spot for enjoying morning coffee. Although it's a little out of Lisbon's city centre, the surrounding Saldanha neighborhood has plenty of local restaurants and you can walk to the downtown riverfront area in forty minutes.

As soon as you step through the door of this contemporary apartment of lofty proportions there’s a soothing atmosphere. Designed with Scandinavian influences in mind, it’s a light-filled home that makes for a great Lisbon base. There’s plenty of space to socialise – whether it’s cooking in the kitchen, hosting a glamourous dinner party in the separate dining room, or curling up on the sofa (or those cushy window seats) at the end of a busy day. We particularly love how spacious the bedrooms feel with outdoor balconies to let the fresh air flow through. Those looking to combine work and play will appreciate the dedicated desk area and there's plenty of space to unpack if you're staying in the city for a longer spell. Located in a charming and surprisingly quiet pocket of Lisbon, you’ll find lots of gourmet restaurants and high-end shops a few steps away, including El Corte Inglés shopping mall located just next door. Or for some culture, head to the Calouste Gulbenkian Museum with its beautiful gardens, a mere five minutes away on foot. The kitchen is sleek and modern, with all you could need to whip up light meals, and the bedrooms are spacious and full of natural light. You'll even have a narrow balcony here, on which to sip coffee, read a newspaper and people watch on the street below. On the lower side of Alfama, you'll get to enjoy a view of the Sé Cathedral, and all the city's sights are within walking distance – we recommend you start your tour at the nearby Praça do Comércio.

If you fancy a bit of retail therapy, on the other hand, Chiado with its chic boutiques, is only a ten-minute stroll away. You can even walk to some of the city’s iconic attractions such as Lisbon Cathedral, São Jorge Castle and Miradouro Portas do Sol in under thirty minutes. If you don’t fancy exploring on foot, the famous Tram 28 passes through the district, while the Glória Funicular is just over a five-minute saunter. Or, to get the most out of your trip, let the concierge organise tickets and experiences for you. Back at this modern home – there’s a lot we adore about this place, from the wooden floors and inspirational quotes to the gorgeous bathroom and little windows with cute shutters. The host, Patrícia, has also made a lighting scheme which creates a warm atmosphere – it’s easy to see that she has a love of design. So, relax with a glass of wine at the dining table and enjoy a Portuguese feast. With this home, you can really live like a Lisboeta.

This studio packs loads of style into its little footprint – bold artwork, copper hanging lamps and a concrete bathroom. The bed is exceptionally comfortable, perfect for catching some much-needed sleep after a long day of sightseeing. Though small, the kitchenette has a coffee machine, toaster and microwave that are ideal for easy meals and snacks to fuel your day. Oh, and we love that TV here is best enjoyed from the bed. Lively, hilly Bairro Alto is right on your doorstep, with plenty of trendy restaurants, bookshops, old-style cafes and boutiques waiting to be checked out. It’s also a bohemian neighbourhood known for its nightlife – where rows of bars dissolve into the street to make one giant outdoor party (don’t worry though, you’ll be tucked safely away on a quiet street). At sunset, check out a view of the city at Miradouro São Pedro de Alcântara, just four minutes away. And for more exploring, you’re only a ten-minute walk to Chiado or Principe Real.

This fantastic home is located in Bairro Alto, with all of its fantastic restaurants and bars. If you fancy a bit of shopping, Chiado is a ten-minute stroll away – its streets are packed with chic boutiques, interesting bookshops and literary cafes. Take some snaps of the beautiful Lisbon Cathedral, a twenty-minute walk from this home, or explore São Jorge Castle, a twelve-minute saunter. Time Out Market, on the other hand, is just over ten minutes on foot – browse its shops and market vendors selling fresh food and flowers. You’ll also find over twenty restaurants and stylish music venues here (your host can make dinner reservations for you). If you don’t want to eat out, cook some local Portuguese produce from the market in the sleek kitchen – we adore this bright, open-plan space – there's a splendid socially conducive atmosphere here. Like its lovely downstairs neighbour, Quarta Bicicleta is one of the nicest homes in this part of Alfama – and trust us, we've seen many. The location at the foot of the São Jorge Castle will make sightseeing effortless, and the terrace has some pretty sweet views of the river too. With a coherent modern design and high quality furniture, the only thing we can really fault this home for are the slanting ceilings (if you're tall), and the wall art might not be to everyone's taste. 

Quarta Bicicleta

This modern studio flat perfectly suits a solo traveller or a couple wanting to explore Lisbon's vibrant culture and history. It's not the biggest, but it still has everything you need for a fuss-free stay in the capital, including a quaint kitchenette, super comfortable bed and sleek bathroom with a luxe rainfall shower. You can even spot the top of the Basilica da Estrela out the window – a rarity for a ground floor flat. But the best part about this place is the excellent location. Bairro Alto, known as Lisbon's bohemian district, is home to trendy restaurants, lively Fado bars, old-style cafes, art galleries and independent shops. Check out the many beautiful churches sprinkled across this vibrant neighbourhood, or hop on one of the iconic trams and weave your way up into the hills. This is the perfect spot to go exploring – you're only a four-minute walk from Miradouro São Pedro de Alcântara (one of the best viewpoints in the city) and just a twenty-minute stroll from the historic city centre.

The area between Avenida and Saldanha is home to a lot of offices, which attracts a young professionals crowd – and with it, a fun mixture of cafes and restaurants that will keep you busy locally. Let's Get Lexical is one of those hazy, sunny homes that will make you feel like you're waking up in a beach house, even though you'll be fifteen minutes away from the Sāo Jorge Castle. The text prints are a matter of personal taste, but if you're not bothered by their relentless inspiration, then you've probably found the one.

Located in a historical building in Picoas, which was designed by the esteemed Modernist architect Cassiano Branco, Mind Garden is a unique home. While the furniture is quite unobtrusive, the bare architectural bones take centre stage, expressing themselves most obviously in the dining pavilion. Natural light will never be a problem in this home, but taller guests might not appreciate the sloping ceilings in the communal area. While the streets of Picoas aren't as central as Baixa, they are extremely well-connected to the riverside while maintaining a local flavour.

Mind Garden

A real gem of a place, in a great location, this home is perfect if you're here to experience the buzz of city life in Lisbon. Part of a traditional period building, it's been beautifully restored to show off its best features – the living room's three sets of French doors out to the narrow, wrought iron balcony, the window shutters and the exposed parts of the wooden pombolina skeleton structure this area is known for. We love the wood floors and white walls, keeping everything cool and minimalist, while the velvet sofas and house plants make it feel like a real home from home. Here you'll be on the edge of Cais do Sodré and the Bairro Alto, so you’re in the heart of Lisbon’s thriving restaurant and bar scenes, with somewhere different to try within walking distance every night of the week.

This home feels comfortable, high-end, and characterful. It’s hard to ask for more, but we picked it apart and here’s what we found. The Handhake's baren bones are great – this home is located inside a renovated Baixa townhouse, which has high ceilings and French windows as standard, but the host didn’t rely solely on that. There are a few nice pieces of art in here, notably the statuettes and the mirrors in the bedroom, which give it a modern look.

Located on the Rua Carmo, Grandella Boots is a great home for first-time visitors – especially if you're keen to explore Lisbon on foot. Situated above one of the city’s most vibrant avenues, the huge windows are perfectly primed for people-watching. Street vendors to and fro along the thoroughfare, locals weave through the throngs, and performers draw in gaggles of curious onlookers. Inside, the furnishings are modest but comfortable and do well not to distract you from the fantastic views – you can see the ruins of the Carmo convent on one side of the apartment, and the Santa Justa Elevator on the other. After a pastry and coffee for breakfast, slip into the hubbub and make your way over to Praça do Comércio, a ten-minute walk downhill, or lace up your walking shoes and take the twelve-minute hike uphill to Bairro Alto for retro boutiques and the São Pedro de Alcântara viewpoint. Should you fancy escaping the crowds, you’re a ten-minute walk to Cais do Sodré terminal where you can catch a ferry to the other side of the Tagus – waterfront restaurants and fine sunsets await.

The first thing to bring up when talking about Flying Fish has to be the location. It’s right in the middle of Baixa, with Chiado also very nearby, which is more or less the perfect spot from which to explore the city. The flat’s welcoming – individual without ever seeming brash. It’s not perfect, and as you’d expect from any home that’s been visited even a couple of times, there were some inevitable signs of wear (a few scuff marks, nothing serious), but when you run the positives past the negatives, it’s not even close.

Rua Carmo is a great place to stay if you're in town for the first time. Your bucket list will likely contain the neighbouring Santa Justa Lift and Praça Luis de Camões, while the cobbled street itself is full of street performers and shops. Grandella Vinyl is a simple, relaxed home with abundant natural light and space. It's not our most luxurious offering, but we liked the abstract art prints and the view from the living room.

The streets surrounding this apartment are part of Principe Real – one of the trendiest neighbourhoods in Lisbon, where new cafes crop up almost every month alongside organic markets and original clothing boutiques. Thanks to the hilltop location, this split-level home has incredible views over the Tagus River and the city's varied architecture, and the best spot to take it all in is from the balcony. Just grab a bottle of wine (your host generously leaves one for you) and take your front-row seat to gorgeous sunsets over the rooftops. When you're in the mood to cook, the kitchen has everything you need – there's also a produce market held on Saturdays in the park nearby to stock up on fresh produce. Downstairs is relaxed and cosy, with pops of bright reds and a clean, contemporary living space that's an excellent place to hang out after a busy day. We think this apartment is a great match for a family or friend group that want a vibrant locale, excellent views and easy access to transport links.

This apartment building dates back to the 1950s, and still retains its traditional Portuguese facade. Inside, you'll find high ceilings, rustic hardwood floors, and big windows that flood the space with light. All these traditional details are kept in immaculate condition and matched with a chic collection of modern furniture that brings the space firmly into the 21st century. There are board games and books to enjoy, while the blue-tiled kitchen is more than just a beauty – the hosts have provided basic cooking ingredients alongside high-quality appliances. The location in Baixa-Chiado puts you firmly in the heart of Lisbon, and it would be impossible to run out of things to do in this vibrant area. The grand Praça do Comercio is just three minutes, away, while Lisbon Cathedral and the Santa Justa Lift are five minutes away on foot. And, with three metro stations within a five-minute walk from your front door, getting to other parts of the city couldn't be easier.
