Freshly renovated, this beautiful apartment is the kind of Lisbon home we daydream about. In a period building typical of this ancient part of the city, it's been lovingly brought into the 21st century by owners who clearly care about the quality of the finish. The characteristic Pombalina wooden cage of the stone building shows itself in the open-plan living space. Invented after the great earthquake of the 1750s, it's an architectural structure to ensure stability. It also happens to look really cool. You may also spot some other historic features in the home – an old salting trough in one of the bathrooms, a huge stone fireplace in a bedroom and antique recovered tiles made into large panels that adorn the corridors. At the same time, it's a smart, modern home with luxurious furnishings, and an on-trend black and marble kitchen. We love the views over Lisbon's rooftops from the balcony too. When you're ready to explore you'll be a five-minute walk to Praça do Comércio, which opens up to the Tagus river. The stylish neighbourhood of Chiado is a ten-minute walk away, as are the Ribeira Market and Campo das Cebolas.

This home feels comfortable, high-end, and characterful. It’s hard to ask for more, but we picked it apart and here’s what we found. The Handhake's baren bones are great – this home is located inside a renovated Baixa townhouse, which has high ceilings and French windows as standard, but the host didn’t rely solely on that. There are a few nice pieces of art in here, notably the statuettes and the mirrors in the bedroom, which give it a modern look.

You'll instantly fall in love with this charming apartment, situated in the heart of Lisbon. With plenty of space, an excellent location, and a hefty dose of style, it's guaranteed to make you feel at home right away. 

The living area is a chic space where you can really relax – you'll love admiring the splashes of colour and quirky design details dotted throughout. Budding chefs can whip up a delicious Portuguese feast in the kitchen and serve their culinary creations at the gorgeous dining table. And, the open-plan layout makes is perfect for socialising – you can chat to your guests about your plans over a delicious glass of wine in the evening. 

Step outside, and you'll find yourself in the Baixa neighbourhood, just steps away from many of the city's most iconic sights. Both the Arco da Rua Augusta and the famous trams are only one minute away on foot, as is the Praça do Comércio. And, if you want to visit the Santa Justa Elevator, it's only a five-minute walk away – it really doesn't get more central than this.

The flat is decorated in a charming Lisbon style, combining natural materials, homespun furnishings and a splash of warm colours to create a stylish home. The bedroom is kept minimal with crisp white linens and pretty prints adorning the walls, so you'll have no trouble getting a good night's sleep here. There's a sleek kitchen with traditional azulejo tiles and a bright dining space for inviting guests over and feasting together. Natural light bounces off the wood floors, creating a cool living space to rest weary legs and unwind with a glass of Rioja. 

Outside, you'll find you're right in the thick of things, with lively Praça do Comércio on your doorstep (three minutes walk), plenty of trendy restaurants and hip bars nearby, and the Sé de Lisboa only a five-minute stroll away. If you can't decide on a dinner option one night, we recommend you try the Time Out Food Market, less than fifteen minutes away on foot from your front door.

Down by Lisbon’s waterfront, this apartment is surrounded by chi chi little bars, trendy eateries and all the beguiling attractions of the city centre. Walk less than ten minutes to reach the narrow, bar-stuffed streets of Bairro Alto, or make the eight-minute stroll to the dramatic ruins of Carmo Convent.

Returning to this apartment, you’re met with a vintage-chic interior. Art Nouveau rugs, an azulejo-tiled wall feature and tropical-fern-clad sofas feel as though the host has dipped into the vintage markets to decorate this place. High ceilings and traditional Lisbon windows keep things feeling big and breezy, with an undeniable touch of class.

In the heart of Lisbon’s historic centre, this apartment is a five-minute walk to the waterside Praça do Comércio lined with shops and restaurants on the River Tagus. Winding, cobbled streets packed with bars and restaurants lead from the apartment to Castelo de S. Jorge on the hilltop, a ten-minute walk away. True to its historic surroundings, this home retains some original features of the traditional Pombaline building it’s housed in. A wooden frame from the post-earthquake reconstruction of 1755 juts out into the living room. Bold black and gold artwork has been hand-picked to complement the wooden structure. Waking up in the master bedroom is a real treat as sunlight streams through French windows, which can be opened up to create a Juliet balcony.

This stylish apartment sits atop the highest hill in Lisbon. Thanks to the hardwood floors, stone wall, small balconies and large windows that fill the space with light, there's a cosy vibe here that will make you feel right at home. Oh, and did we mention the view? Just step out onto the balcony and you'll see the sparkling river in the distance. There's a fully-stocked kitchen that makes cooking a breeze, and your hosts are also more than happy to arrange exciting extras like breakfast delivery, home massages, surf lessons, a cruise on the Tagus and even helicopter rides. Though you're a bit far from Praça do Comércio and the city centre (it's a fifteen-minute bus ride), staying in Graça is worth it. You'll find colourful houses, local restaurants making traditional Portuguese fare and independent shops nestled amongst the cobblestone alleyways. Not to mention this area has some of the best viewpoints in Lisbon – we suggest Miradouro da Graça, which is a fifteen-minute walk away.

You’ll be just a three-minute walk to the Lisbon Cathedral, eight minutes to Praça do Rossio and ten minutes to Castelo de S. Jorge. Although it's nestled in the heart of beautiful Bairro Alto, the surrounding narrow streets have a quiet and distinctly village-like feel where locals know each other and the streets are filled with coffee shops, concept stores, restaurants and art galleries. By night, it's a whole other story – the neighbourhood fills with people and the streets become outdoor extensions of the many bars in the area. Your home will be a lovely peaceful spot that’s still near all the action – trendy Chiado is just an eight-minute walk away. Our favourite spot of the apartment has got to be the southwest-facing balcony – it’s narrow but long, and offers up incredible views of the River Tagus and the 25th April Bridge at sunset. Bring your evening aperitif outside as you watch the sky’s colours change, or enjoy your morning coffees out here as day settles over the city. The inside of the house is extremely welcoming – there’s a large marble dining table for meals all together and a bright, stylish living room that’s been dynamically designed. At the end of a long day, wash up in the roomy bathrooms before settling in the bedrooms, where you’ll rest easy in anticipation of another beautiful Lisbon day tomorrow.

Metres from the National Pantheon and the city’s famous Feira da Ladra flea market, this Alfama apartment is right in the heart of historic Lisbon. Inside, it’s a more modern affair with geometric feature walls, splashes of colour and mid-century furnishings. Enjoy the sweet and fluffy bolas de Berlim from your welcome hamper with a full-bodied espresso in the morning – eat together at the dining table or take a moment for yourself on the Juliet balcony, watching people come and go in the streets below as bedsheets flutter on washing lines. Wander through the higgledy-piggledy alleyways, discovering traditional tavernas shaded by orange trees in cobbled squares. Santa Apolónia metro station is a ten-minute walk downhill, connecting you to downtown. Come back to your neighbourhood just before dusk – the Miradouro de Santa Luzia is, in our opinion, the best spot to watch the sunset – especially with a glass of Vinho Verde from the kiosk.

Situated in Alfama, this well-appointment apartment has the very best of historic Lisbon on its doorstep. The Miradouro de Santa Luzia (one of the best viewpoints in the city) and bustling Praça do Comércio are within walking distance, and there’s a Tram 28 tram stop a couple of hundred metres away. The age of the building means you may hear the neighbours during your stay, so we recommend packing earplugs if you’re a light sleeper. There are also some signs of wear and tear in the bathroom, though this is cosmetic, and everything works as it should.

The Sheer Magic

In cities across the globe, it's more often than not true that the closer a home is to the centre, the less likely it is that it'll have any outdoor space. This apartment in the middle of Lisbon bucks this trend – not only does it have a private terrace with an alfresco dining table, but guests also get access to a communal garden that's blessed with bountiful amounts of plant life.

While these respective spaces are an explosion of colour, the home's interior is much simpler by contrast. The walls and ceilings are painted stark white, which makes it feel instantly bright and welcoming. There's a minimalist approach to furnishings and decoration, although the kitchen that could kindly be described as space-efficient perhaps embraces this trend a little too much. Aside from that, there's very little to fault with this simple but elegant home.

To top it all off, the location is excellent regardless if you're visiting Lisbon for the first or fiftieth time. Both Museu Nacional do Azulejo and Castelo de São Jorge can be reached in around twenty minutes on foot, albeit in opposite directions, while Praça do Comércio takes all of eighteen minutes to reach on the tram.

This beautifully bright apartment between Lisbon's Chiado and Alfama neighbourhoods has it all – a great location and a blend of modern styling and character features. Summing up this historic part of Lisbon perfectly, it's in a typical Pombalina building – freshly renovated with impeccable attention to detail. If local period architecture is of interest to you, you'll love the high, ornately decorated ceilings, the tall windows and the traditional narrow balcony with wrought iron railings. And it's not too hard to spot the building's defining feature – the Pombalina wooden cage built in to strengthen the stone buildings after the great earthquake of the 1750s. Bright and smartly designed, this charming home has been reimagined for the 21st century, with a cool black kitchen, mid-century modern furniture and tasteful wall art. Comfortable and welcoming, you'll spend your mornings sipping coffee, watching the street come to life from your balcony. The two bedrooms are pared-back yet elegantly dressed, while the two spa-like bathrooms with their rainfall showers are a treat to wake up to each morning. Outside of your home, both the Santa Justa Lift and Praça do Comércio are a seven-minute walk away, São Jorge Castle is walkable in eight and Lisbon Cathedral is a mere three minutes on foot from your door. With the Mercado da Baixa a six-minute stroll away too for fresh produce as well as countless restaurants, shops and bars in your neighbourhood, you've got everything you need for a fun, culture-filled stay.

When your apartment is under ten minutes from Alfama, you might think it would be hard to compete with such striking surroundings. Speaking of which, it’s a four-minute wander to the Sé de Lisboa, six to the waterfront restaurants of Praça do Comércio, and only ten to the hilltop vantage point of the Castelo de S. Jorge. While iconic sights are all around, the historic features of this home also make a lasting impression. In this restored Pombaline building, its stone nooks and wooden earthquake supports date back to the 1755 reparations. As a reminder of the area’s fascinating history, the interiors still display some of these original elements. Despite this, you’ll find fresh, sophisticated, and modern updates to the decor. Painting the gaiola pombalina timber in a bright white is a touch of genius, plus we love the sleek, matte-charcoal kitchen and the lemon-yellow sofa in the lounge. With contemporary art pieces adorning the walls, this creative home has been kitted out for the 21st century. But when you’re not busy admiring what’s on offer inside, we recommend heading to the windows with a chilled glass of vinho verde. From up here on the sixth floor, the views are simply astounding.

A big terrace in Alfama is quite a rarity – especially as it's almost as big as the interior, and a great place to spend a sunny afternoon. Although the insides of Saint George's Terrace are an open-plan arrangement, we liked the natural light and the big, lioz-clad bathroom. From here, the riverside and Praça do Comércio are easily accessible on foot, which makes this home a great base for urban exploration.

Thanks to its central location in Lisbon's bohemian Bairro Alto, this apartment is the perfect base to explore the Portuguese capital. Walk the winding streets of this neighbourhood to immerse yourself in the culture and architecture of Lisbon. When the hills get a bit too much, you can always hop onto one of the iconic trams as they weave their way through the city. You're four minutes' walk from the breathtaking city views of Miradouro de São Pedro, a six-minute walk from the opulent interior of the Church of Sao Roque, and six minutes from the mournful sounds of fado that accompany dinner at legendary Lisbon restaurant, Adega Machado. At the end of a day of exploring, retreat to your sleek and modern home, where traditional features harmoniously coexist with minimalist modern furniture – it's a stark contrast to the art-daubed cobbled streets below. Where do we start with this stylish home – let's begin with the location. This apartment has a fabulous address – walk to Rossio Square, also known as King Pedro IV Square, in just three minutes. Even closer is the Dona Maria II National Theatre, a two-minute saunter, while the Santa Justa Elevator is five minutes on foot. St. George's Castle, which you also have glimpses of from this home, is a twenty-minute stroll.

Back at this apartment, relax on the sofa and take in the vistas of Downtown Lisbon. We love the herringbone-patterned wood floors and chic black and white prints in the living space. Rustle up a cozido à Portuguesa in the modern kitchen if you don't feel like eating out. This place is the ideal bolthole for two couples, a family or business professionals.

You’ll find this rather dapper apartment right in the heart of Baixa, Lisbon’s most elegant and historic district. Housed in a carefully restored Pombaline period property, the designers have deliberately kept the apartment contemporary and sleek. 

Touches of mid-century and matt black finishes fuse perfectly with its historic surroundings, including the restored stone in the bedroom and the antique wooden salting chests. Beautiful wrought-iron Juliette balconies bathe the apartment in natural light and reveal impressive views of the city, River Tagus and São Jorge Castle in the distance. It's the perfect spot to perch with your morning coffee as you hatch plans for the day ahead. 

And when the city comes calling, you’re perfectly situated to explore Lisbon, with the upmarket Chiado district just ten minutes away on foot. Make sure to visit Lisbon’s biggest and most impressive food market, Mercado da Ribeira (a ten-minute walk) for a bit of lunch. This is the sort of home we hope to find every time we open a front door. The style is beautiful with strong mid-century vibes, bringing Mad Men era New York to Lisbon – there's even an iconic Eames chair to recline in. There are plenty of abstract artworks to admire, a patterned rug to sink your toes into, and a slick kitchen that you can use to whip up home-cooked meals or just open the odd bottle of wine. The whole building was revamped pretty recently, which allowed the owners to put in a selection of high quality facilities and design features. The surrounding Santa Catarina neighbourhood puts you within walking distance of both Bairro Alto and Chiado, and less than fifteen minutes away from the Tagus River. And, with local restaurants, artisanal shops and those renowned Portuguese bakeries on your doorstep, you don't need to go for to get a true taste of Lisbon. 


Meditations

Perched on top of a renovated townhouse, View & Walkability boasts a fantastic location and a great view from the balcony. Rua de São Nicolau is within walking distance to all the central sights, restaurants, and cafes – but the central location does translate to a vibrant atmosphere that won't suit those who are looking for a tranquil stay. Our favourite hangout spot in this home is the balcony, which is great for a morning coffee, but even on rainy days, the living room gets great natural light. We also loved the eclectic design that mixes the old and new.

View & Walkability

Marquis Cross blends the new and the traditional very well. The host has preserved parts of the original gaiola Pombalina (the wooden framework around which these buildings were constructed), but much of the rest of the flat is far more modern. The location on Rua Augusta is going to be divisive – you can’t get more central, but every tourist and street performer has also worked that out and spend the day milling up and down. Inside, however, it’s surprisingly quiet, at least compared to other flats in the area.


Marquis Cross

Settle into a pet-friendly apartment in Avenidas Novas, where restaurants are dotted between the nearby bus stops for easy adventuring across Lisbon. There's a scenic park within strolling distance, plus the Calouste Gulbenkian Museum. We love how much room this interior gives groups of four. While the lack of air conditioning may be a dealbreaker to some, it's a cosy spot for itinerary planning over breakfast. Have work to do? We're sure you'll fly through your tasks at the bedroom desk.

Glimpse Of Spring

Offering a desirable location and private outside space, this apartment is a great base for small groups. Nestled in the historic district of Alfama, the home sets you up for a traditional stay, within easy reach of the city's top attractions. And yet the area is surprisingly quiet, and with the inviting terrace that awaits you, it's the perfect pad for those who like a quick recharge in between adventures. The living space is bright and practical, with a fully equipped kitchenette, and both bedrooms come with desks for those working remotely. Just note that you'll need to climb up a staircase to reach this apartment on the third floor.

With its welcoming boho-chic interiors and cool Marvila location, this apartment is ideal for those who want to kick back and take it easy. Natural textures, sumptuous soft furnishing and whitewashed walls create a calming atmosphere – we loved nothing more than sinking into the couch with a good book and a glass of local green wine in hand. If home cooking is on the agenda, the sleek kitchen is equipped with everything you need for whipping up tasty dishes. 

Spend lazy afternoons on your private terrace or floating about in the communal pool. If you’re itching to explore, it’s less than a five-minute walk to a craft brewery and just footsteps from a contemporary art gallery. The centre of Lisbon is reached in fifteen minutes by car – we recommend taking a wander through charming Alfama before watching the sunset from the Senhora do Monte viewpoint.

This studio packs loads of style into its little footprint – bold artwork, copper hanging lamps and a concrete bathroom. The bed is exceptionally comfortable, perfect for catching some much-needed sleep after a long day of sightseeing. Though small, the kitchenette has a coffee machine, toaster and microwave that are ideal for easy meals and snacks to fuel your day. Oh, and we love that TV here is best enjoyed from the bed. Lively, hilly Bairro Alto is right on your doorstep, with plenty of trendy restaurants, bookshops, old-style cafes and boutiques waiting to be checked out. It’s also a bohemian neighbourhood known for its nightlife – where rows of bars dissolve into the street to make one giant outdoor party (don’t worry though, you’ll be tucked safely away on a quiet street). At sunset, check out a view of the city at Miradouro São Pedro de Alcântara, just four minutes away. And for more exploring, you’re only a ten-minute walk to Chiado or Principe Real.

Childhood Crush

Located in the historic Santos district, this charming apartment brims with typical Lisbon design, style and character. From the wooden beams and floorboards, to the warm lighting and soft furniture, it's the perfect place to relax. The biggest draw is, of course, the large decked terrace, complete with a cosy string lights, an outdoor sofa and dining table. We can think of nothing better than sharing local delicacies and bottles of wine out here, during the balmy summer evenings. 

Stroll over to the Elevador da Bica, instantly connecting you to the entire city, then wander around the trendy Bairro Alto district, filled with art houses, boutiques, cafes and bars. If you’re feeling peckish, you're in luck. The local neighbourhood of Madragoa is well renowned for its gorgeous architecture, traditional taverns and petiscos (tapas) restaurants. 

Starlight in Santos

With the famous Santa Justa Elevator on the same street and buzzy Rua Augusta just a minute from your door, Lisbon boltholes don't come more central than this. Those planning on working during their stay are all sorted with dedicated desk space. And although the kitchen area is compact, there's everything you could need to rustle up breakfasts and lighter meals. It's worth noting that there's no parking here, but with Rossio metro station just a three-minute walk away, we don't think you'll mind.

Ode to Mésnier

Now, this is how you do city living in Lisbon, folks. Exquisitely designed throughout and boasting an all-too-rare suntrap terrace, who wouldn't be happy in a pad like this.

Sunny mornings call for freshly brewed coffees and Pastel de Natas out on the terrace. As dusk falls over the city, grab ginjinha cocktails from hole-in-the-wall bars. Then settle down in one of its late-night bistros for authentic tapas, as the Fado folk musicians strike up.
