Situated in the charming area of Graça, this luminous flat is a cosy retreat in one of Lisbon's most authentic neighbourhoods. The sun-kissed private terrace is our favourite spot. Begin the morning out there with a strong cup of coffee and pasteis de nata in the fresh air – your host can also arrange breakfast – and close the day with a glass of Vinho Verde come nightfall. You'll also have access to a communal garden, which is perfect for picnics in the late-afternoon sunshine. Inside, the sleek design is complemented by brilliant pops of red. Sprawl out on the sofa for a post-sightseeing catnap or gather around the table for a typical Portuguese dinner. 

Another thing we adore is the location. You're a bit further away from the hustle and bustle in the city centre, but with the famous 28 Tram a short walk away, you won't have to travel far to see the sights. Here, narrow streets are flanked by local restaurants, bakeries and open-air cafes, all serving up delectable regional dishes. Make sure to take in the panoramic views from the hilltop observation points – our favourite is Miradouro da Senhora do Monte, easily reached on foot. Or, explore in style and ask your host to arrange river cruises, helicopter tours and other experiences.

Tucked away on a residential street in Alfama, this home is a triple threat of charm, location, and views. This is a cosy haven with a simple design aesthetic that focuses on functionality and comfort – but we really liked the French doors and the hardwood steps that take you up to the attic bedroom. We were torn between the quaint communal terrace at the back and the spectacular river views from the living room. In the end, we decided to split our time between the two. Want to discover the real Lisbon? Slip on your most comfortable trainers and get lost in the charming labyrinthine streets of Alfama. If you want to save your legs, two of the city's most iconic tram routes pass within five minutes of your hillside home. Music lovers should head to the Museu do Fado, a three-minute walk, while history buffs will enjoy the impressive Castelo de São Jorge and Sé de Lisboa, both ten minutes away.

Like its lovely downstairs neighbour, Quarta Bicicleta is one of the nicest homes in this part of Alfama – and trust us, we've seen many. The location at the foot of the São Jorge Castle will make sightseeing effortless, and the terrace has some pretty sweet views of the river too. With a coherent modern design and high quality furniture, the only thing we can really fault this home for are the slanting ceilings (if you're tall), and the wall art might not be to everyone's taste.

Thanks to its central location in Lisbon's bohemian Bairro Alto, this apartment is the perfect base to explore the Portuguese capital. Walk the winding streets of this neighbourhood to immerse yourself in the culture and architecture of Lisbon. When the hills get a bit too much, you can always hop onto one of the iconic trams as they weave their way through the city. You're four minutes' walk from the breathtaking city views of Miradouro de São Pedro, a six-minute walk from the opulent interior of the Church of Sao Roque, and six minutes from the mournful sounds of fado that accompany dinner at legendary Lisbon restaurant, Adega Machado. At the end of a day of exploring, retreat to your sleek and modern home, where traditional features harmoniously coexist with minimalist modern furniture – it's a stark contrast to the art-daubed cobbled streets below. There's more to Alfama than exploring medieval architecture and its fado legacy. Its maze-like streets are a joy to get lost in, and the nearby waterfront is a popular nightlife spot, so make sure to pack a pair of shoes for every occasion. This apartment stands out for its minimalist modern design in this historic area. There's a lot of space for you to enjoy, filled only by a few select pieces of furniture, which sets you up for a relaxing stay without lots of clutter around. There's a bedroom balcony, which isn't huge, but it does offer a brilliant view of the Sé Cathedral – which offers a taste of what the city has in store. So, lace up your trainers and set out to explore the city's seven hills. You're only a few minutes from the impressive Praça do Comércio and the grid-like shopping streets of downtown Baixa. If you fancy exploring further afield, then you're close to the Sé stop of the iconic 28 tram.

If browsing stylish boutiques is your bag, then this home in chic Chiado is just the ticket. You'll also find stylish restaurants, and the iconic 1700s Bertrand Bookstore here. It's just a two-minute stroll to Praça Luís de Camões with its statues of Portuguese literary icons, while the National Theatre of São Carlos is five minutes on foot. Other attractions nearby include Lisbon Cathedral, under a twenty-minute walk and the Elevador De Santa Justa, a ten-minute saunter.

Back at this lovely apartment, take in the fabulous views over the River Tagus with a glass of rosé wine – we love the traditional tiles here too. With a fabulous central location and set in a renovated period building, this home is simple, smart, and a little bit sassy. Painted all white, with shuttered windows and warm wood floors, it's a traditional apartment with some far from traditional wall art (we see you, Julia Roberts). A bright living area boasts a particularly squashy corner sofa and a modern dining table with chairs for up to six. The kitchen is sleek and modern, with all you could need to whip up light meals, and the bedrooms are spacious and full of natural light. You'll even have a narrow balcony here, on which to sip coffee, read a newspaper and people watch on the street below. On the lower side of Alfama, you'll get to enjoy a view of the Sé Cathedral, and all the city's sights are within walking distance – we recommend you start your tour at the nearby Praça do Comércio.

If you're quite particular about location, then this apartment is the place for you. Situated inside a period building on Rua de Santa Justa, you'll be able to spot Arco da Rua Augusta from the living room, and walk to Elevador de Santa Justa in just one minute – it doesn't get much more convenient than that. Beautifully restored and filled with light, this home is as stylish as it is comfortable. We especially loved the kitchen's bright yellow tiles, where you can prepare a delicious meal using fresh ingredients to share at the sleek glass table. There's also a desk for catching up on work, and a plush sofa where you can put your feet up and enjoy some Portuguese wine – but with so much to do right on your doorstep, we think you'll hardly find the time.

The Baixa district was completely rebuilt after an earthquake destroyed it in the mid-eighteenth century – now it's lined with neoclassical architecture, outstanding museums, stunning squares, and plenty of shopping opportunities, and this characterful apartment is right in the heart of it. Just a five-minute walk to the Praça do Comércio, you'll feel immersed in Lisbon's culture, history and commercial centre. Verging on old-timey Alfama, you really couldn't be better placed location-wise for all there is to eat, drink and do here. If you feel like a quiet indoor moment's downtime, relax in the bright, contemporary living/dining area with a glass of Lisbon wine. We love how the original features are still intact, while the modern furniture merges old and new in elegant fashion. Knock up a homemade piri piri chicken in the sleek kitchen to be enjoyed in the stylish dining area with Eames-inspired chairs. Although, with a host of eateries and family-run restaurants right on your doorstep, we think you'll be dining out most evenings.

Enjoy some of Lisbon’s best views from this split-level penthouse perch. Classic Portuguese windows look out over the shambling terracotta rooftops of the city’s old heart. Throw open the windows in each bedroom and wake up to the sound of the city coming to life. Baixa is our favourite place to stay in Lisbon. It's packed with restaurants and cafes, all while being a short walk away from the city sights. Golden Feathers is right in front of a famous tram 28 stop, so there's no excuse for staying in. This is a soft, comfortable home that mixes metallic hues with high-quality materials. While we would like to see a bit more of a personal touch in what is clearly a rental home, it's a great base for urban exploration.

Look in any direction at this home and you’ll have the Tejo river or São Vicente de Fora waiting for you in all their beauty. The terraces here are practically private viewpoints where you can bask in the sun and admire the entire city – enjoy a meal at the picnic-style table or lounge on the Adirondacks (which double as a spectacular sunset spot). Honestly, in a city known for its miradouros, (meaning viewpoints in Portuguese), it’s possible that you might not find a better one than your own personal terrace. Inside, there's another kind of grandeur with marble floors and fireplaces, rattan bedroom walls and terracotta floor tiles creating an elegant, shabby chic vibe to the penthouse. And lest we forget to mention, you’ll be staying within the walls of Castelo São Jorge. Discover the historic heart of the city, where you can explore many of the cities’ churches and sights on foot along with local seafood restaurants, Portuguese cafes and traditional Fado houses.

Miguel used to live in Hunter, and it’s immediately clear that the flat used to be someone’s home. Things like the quality of the mattresses really stand out, as they are often overlooked in rental homes, but that isn’t the case here. The design is, of course, eye-catching – you don’t need us to tell you that – and even if not everyone goes for it, they will go for the views from the balcony. Throw in the fantastic location near in Chiado, and you’re onto a winner.


Hunter

Surrounded by centuries-old houses in Lisbon’s Alfama district, this bright apartment located in a colourful, traditional building is a treat for first-time tourists and seasoned visitors alike. A cool Scandi vibe sets a clean, laid-back tone from the moment you walk through the door, with a sofa perfectly positioned by the living room’s tall window to enjoy leafy neighbourhood views. We love the openness of this home’s layout which lets the sunlight pour in from one room to the next, while the bedroom feels like a snug cocoon with its simple yet elegant wood accents. We particularly like the handy vestibule that lets you fall asleep – doors open – to the outside’s breeze. Factor in a luxurious rainfall shower and you’ve got everything you need here for a blissfully relaxing stay. The Handhake's baren bones are great – this home is located inside a renovated Baixa townhouse, which has high ceilings and French windows as standard, but the host didn’t rely solely on that. There are a few nice pieces of art in here, notably the statuettes and the mirrors in the bedroom, which give it a modern look.

In a period building typical of this ancient part of the city, it's been lovingly brought into the 21st century by owners who clearly care about the quality of the finish. The characteristic Pombalina wooden cage of the stone building shows itself in the open-plan living space. Invented after the great earthquake of the 1750s, it's an architectural structure to ensure stability. It also happens to look really cool. You may also spot some other historic features in the home – an old salting trough in one of the bathrooms, a huge stone fireplace in a bedroom and antique recovered tiles made into large panels that adorn the corridors. At the same time, it's a smart, modern home with luxurious furnishings, and an on-trend black and marble kitchen. We love the views over Lisbon's rooftops from the balcony too. When you're ready to explore you'll be a five-minute walk to Praça do Comércio, which opens up to the Tagus river. A welcome retreat in the very middle of the city, this Lisbon apartment is a great find. It’s set above the fray, and while you’ll never find somewhere completely silent so centrally, the calm aura of the flat goes a long way to mitigate any noise that rises up from the street below. Of course, the incredibly comfortable beds don’t hurt either. The flat also has beautiful views across the city to Se Cathedral, and while the living room isn’t huge, the windows bring in enough natural light to make it feel bigger than it is. Step out into the streets and you'll soon discover you couldn't be better placed. Many of the Portuguese capital's headline sights are within a few hundred metres, including the vast Praça do Comércio and 
Sé. Thanks to its location, there's always a buzz in Baixa and you won't have to walk far to discover neighbourhood Ginjinha kiosks, swanky rooftop bars and mouthwatering restaurants.

This stylish apartment sits atop the highest hill in Lisbon. Thanks to the hardwood floors, stone wall, small balconies and large windows that fill the space with light, there's a cosy vibe here that will make you feel right at home. Oh, and did we mention the view? Just step out onto the balcony and you'll see the sparkling river in the distance. The Azure Terrace is situated in a house typical for the neighbourhood, which means that the outside (in stark contrast to the home itself) is a bit scruffy.
