You'll have everything you need to while away the days – you won’t even have to leave. But if you start to get itchy feet, you’re close to the paradisiacal village of Comporta and its pristine beaches, surfing spots, and beachfront restaurants. Just hop on the bikes and explore.

Modern and striking, the gorgeous interior just about competes with the beauty of the outdoors. All rooms open up to the garden to let the fresh air in. Even the games room is bright and cosy – a welcoming space for good-spirited games of table football, or letting the kids entertain themselves with the games console. 

That said, we imagine you’ll spend most of your time making the most of the 8.5 hectares that this villa sits on. Start off your mornings with coffee in the early sunshine, then dabble in a spot of yoga in the garden. Succumb to lazy days of reading beside the overflowing pool, occasionally taking a dip in its crystalline waters to cool off. Enjoy lunchtimes beneath the shaded patio dining area, tucking into a meal from the barbecue.

As dinnertime rolls around, gather around the outdoor dining table and enjoy jugs of sangria, while the floodlights and starry sky light up the gardens. Don't feel like cooking? There's a fabulous restaurant just 200 metres away – or your host can arrange for a private chef to come and wow you with local dishes.

From here, it’s possible to walk to the nearest shop, but we recommend hiring a car to explore further afield – the beautiful beaches of Comporta are less than thirty minutes away.

You might never want to leave this sanctuary, but you can walk to the nearest restaurants and it’s just 1 kilometre to the nearest beach.

Follow the views outside and you’ll find the perfect setting for lazy days by the swimming pool, magical sunset drinks and al fresco meals. Your lovely host can also help arrange for a private chef to prepare a delicious Portuguese meal – inviting you to sit back and savour the beauty of this unique setting. And when you’re ready to retreat back inside, you’ll find the ensuite bedrooms set the tone for a restorative night’s sleep. 

When you’re inspired to explore beyond this private sanctuary, days can be spent embracing the waves on Praia dos Brejos beach, hiking through the surrounding countryside and discovering the natural beauty of the Alentejo region. 

Lotus Heart

In the 19th century, Cascais grew into a glamorous spot for a getaway favoured by European royalty and aristocracy. It was during this era that this remarkable home was constructed, although it has recently been treated to a renovation by architect Manuel Aires Mateus. The end result is a home that mixes the allure of yesteryear with some wonderfully contemporary flourishes. 

Given that the smell of sea salt hangs heavy in the air around these parts, it only makes sense to start with the home's outdoor space. The heated swimming pool is sure to be the hangout of choice during the summer months, although there's also a large terrace with a barbecue, fire pit and alfresco dining table, too. If it's views of the Atlantic Ocean you're after, there are balconies on the upper floor that give you just that.

Inside, many grand architectural features remain, like the high ceilings and opulent archways, but the stark white walls, ultra-modern bathrooms and exercise room complete with a Peloton bike bring it firmly into the 21st century.

When you fancy a day on the beach, you really don't have far to go — a private path leads directly down to Praia da Azarujinha. There are plenty more to be discovered along this stretch of coastline, while the historic centre of Cascais takes all of forty minutes to reach on foot.



Princely Attire

A luxurious retreat awaits at this home nestled in the heart of Comporta. Set across three independent homes, the rooms perfectly embody laidback elegance and effortless style. There are seven peaceful bedrooms and a generous living room and kitchen for social gatherings. Outside, you’ll find optimum relaxation while lounging by the private pool and soaking in the stunning views. There’s also a tennis court and a serene terrace with a barbecue for alfresco dining. You will need a car (or bikes) to get around here, but it’s just a short drive to the nearest beaches and amenities. 


The Spirit of Joy 

If we were to tell you of a hideaway that sits in the middle of twelve hectares of lush pine forest in rural Comporta, you might imagine a certain type of home and we're willing to wager that it doesn't look anything like this wonderfully modern residence.

Not only does the boxy white exterior look visually striking from the outside, but this sense of awe will continue as you step through the glass doors. Our favourite space is the double-height living, which is flooded with natural light from the copious number of windows that line the walls. However, the modern brown kitchen and equally glossy bathrooms are sure to take your breath away, as well. The design throughout feels cohesive, united by a preference for clean lines, sleek surfaces and chic minimalism.

Given the agreeable climate that this corner of the Iberian peninsula enjoys, you'll likely want to spend as many hours outdoors as possible and that's easy to do here. The long infinity swimming pool is both wonderfully refreshing when the midday sun is at its highest and made all the more relaxing by the heady scent of fragrant herbs and vegetation that grow around the sides. There are plenty of terraces and balconies on which to take a seat and do nothing more strenuous than soak up the rays, but you can also find a tennis court if you fancy a match or two.

Although there's a strong sense of tranquillity from the isolated position, you don't have to venture far to find the Portuguese coastline. Carvalhal and Pego beaches can be reached in ten minutes or so in the car, and there are a few restaurants and bars to be found close to these seaside spots.


Finesse in the Forest

For bohemian beachside vibes and pristine nature, look no further than this charming four-bedroom villa, nestled between the Sado Estuary and the crashing surf of the Atlantic Ocean.

Thoughtfully designed and beautifully furnished, the villa's interior maintains plenty of period charm alongside a casual contemporary style. The open layout of the main multipurpose living area makes the most of the spectacular summer climate with large, south-facing sliding doors that open out onto an inviting poolside deck. 

Out here, you'll find plenty of sun loungers and parasols for day-long sunbathing sessions, plus a picnic table for light lunches overlooking the pool. Around the corner, further seating and dining options are in the shade of a wooden pergola.

Back inside, four nautically themed bedrooms offer a tranquil haven to retreat to at the end of the day, with both double rooms boasting en-suite bathrooms, and all benefitting from direct access to the immaculately maintained outdoor areas.

The area might only be around an hour south of Lisbon, but Comporta has been quietly flying under the radar over the years. CN Traveller recently picked it out as Portugal's best-kept secret spot. So kick off your shoes, plant your toes in the sand and come and see what the fuss is about.
