And given the home’s quiet neighbourhood away from the crowds, it’s a peaceful pocket-sized place to retreat after soaking up the sunshine on the beach – only an eighteen-minute stroll away.

For those looking to explore the region, Cascais provides access to Lisbon and Sintra-Cascais Natural Park, both of which are within an hour's drive.

Depending on your personal tastes, the concept of no-thrills interior design will either sing to you or strike you as a wasted opportunity. This apartment in Cascais is very much for those in the former camp.

Despite this being close to the Portuguese coastline, there's a discernible Scandi influence in the way this home has been put together, from the walls painted in soothing white and the wooden furnishings to the sparse approach to decoration. If it sounds like we're being negative, we should also mention that there are lots of positives to point out – the row of windows on the far side of the living room is particularly generous when it comes to natural light, while the sleek kitchen has plenty of space for whipping up family-sized feasts.

Of course, if you're heading over to this corner of the country, there's every chance that you'll be trying to spend as much time out of the home as possible. Praia da Ribeira de Cascais is only a short drive away for when you're craving a dip in the Mediterranean Sea, while the Museu Condes de Castro Guimarães sits the same amount of time away if you're after something more cultural.

The imposing Palace of Cascais Citadel is now a museum and is well worth a look around. There are an array of restaurants and bars nearby too which is fortunate as this studio apartment’s kitchenette is quite basic – still, it has a mini-fridge, microwave and hob, so you can make light meals. Stylish and warm, this home is a great base in Cascais. The beach is just a fifteen-minute walk away and you can reach the Parque Urbano da Ribeira dos Mochos in sixteen minutes on foot. When you’re not out seeing the sights, you’ll be glad to have such a cool, comfortable place to call home. We love the terrace and patio, where you can soak up the sun, dine alfresco, and watch the world go by. There’s plenty of room for everyone to gather together inside, too, and the comfy sofa and delightful bathtub make unwinding a breeze.

So, this home has the best of both worlds with its location. It's situated in the picturesque town of Cascais with its charming streets and beaches, yet it's just a short stroll to the train station which connects to Lisbon. There's plenty of room for entertaining in the apartment, and there's a desk in one of the bedrooms if you need to catch up on work emails. If you want to accommodate six guests, though, two will be sleeping on a sofa in the open-plan living room.

Located in the heart of Cascais, this three-storey abode is just a five-minute walk from Rainha Beach and a few hundred metres from shops, restaurants and cafes. If you fancy swapping the coast for the city, Lisbon is 30 kilometres away. Our favourite feature of the home was the private terrace with views across the rooftops and the bay beyond. If you’ll be staying as a group of six, two guests will sleep on the sofa bed in the top floor sitting room.

The villa is bright and stylish, with decor and finishes that would be at home in an interior design magazine. It’s beautiful, with splashes of colour adding warmth and fun. You’ll wake up to feel the sunshine on your pillow, tempting you to head through the floor-to-ceiling glass sliding doors outside to the terrace. If we were to tell you of a hideaway that sits in the middle of twelve hectares of lush pine forest in rural Comporta, you might imagine a certain type of home and we're willing to wager that it doesn't look anything like this wonderfully modern residence.

Not only does the boxy white exterior look visually striking from the outside, but this sense of awe will continue as you step through the glass doors. Our favourite space is the double-height living, which is flooded with natural light from the copious number of windows that line the walls. However, the modern brown kitchen and equally glossy bathrooms are sure to take your breath away, as well. The design throughout feels cohesive, united by a preference for clean lines, sleek surfaces and chic minimalism.

Given the agreeable climate that this corner of the Iberian peninsula enjoys, you'll likely want to spend as many hours outdoors as possible and that's easy to do here. The long infinity swimming pool is both wonderfully refreshing when the midday sun is at its highest and made all the more relaxing by the heady scent of fragrant herbs and vegetation that grow around the sides. There are plenty of terraces and balconies on which to take a seat and do nothing more strenuous than soak up the rays, but you can also find a tennis court if you fancy a match or two.

Although there's a strong sense of tranquillity from the isolated position, you don't have to venture far to find the Portuguese coastline. Carvalhal and Pego beaches can be reached in ten minutes or so in the car, and there are a few restaurants and bars to be found close to these seaside spots.
