We love the terrace and patio, where you can soak up the sun, dine alfresco, and watch the world go by. The breezy terrace overlooks the backyard and gives you the chance to enjoy the fresh air and sunsets. The bedrooms are a bit snug, but two have en-suite bathrooms, ensuring everyone will have their own space. You're also a short walk from the train station, which can whisk you away to central Lisbon in about thirty minutes.

It's situated in the picturesque town of Cascais with its charming streets and beaches, yet it's just a short stroll to the train station which connects to Lisbon. If you want to accommodate six guests, though, two will be sleeping on a sofa in the open-plan living room.

Located in the heart of Cascais, this three-storey abode is just a five-minute walk from Rainha Beach and a few hundred metres from shops, restaurants and cafes. If you fancy swapping the coast for the city, Lisbon is 30 kilometres away. Our favourite feature of the home was the private terrace with views across the rooftops and the bay beyond. If you’ll be staying as a group of six, two guests will sleep on the sofa bed in the top floor sitting room.

Tucked away in a picturesque village, this south-facing home comprises three separate villas on a private compound, making it ideal for a large family holiday or getaway with friends. Named after local beaches, Villa Guincho and Villa Cresmina have two bedrooms, with the former benefitting from a second bathroom. Villa Abano is the smallest with one bedroom. All villas boast beautiful sun-soaked terraces with space for alfresco dining and barbecues. Indoors, the design employs sandy neutrals, warm pops of colour and organic materials such as wicker and bamboo to create tranquil sanctuaries with a distinctly coastal feel. From surfing and beach lounging to hiking and cycling through verdant Sintra-Cascais Natural Park, there's something to satisfy everyone's wanderlust. Thrilling Guincho Beach is just a ten-minute walk away, while the calmer sands of Costa da Estoril are also close by. A meander through the Cascais' historical town centre is definitely a must, and if the mood takes you, Lisbon is just half an hour away. After hours of exploring and adventure, you'll love relaxing in the outdoor seating areas, playing board games and catching up well into the evening.

On summer days, while away the hours reading a book in the manicured garden, cooling off with dips in the outdoor pool before an alfresco lunch on the terrace. The villa is bright and stylish, with decor and finishes that would be at home in an interior design magazine. It’s beautiful, with splashes of colour adding warmth and fun. You’ll wake up to feel the sunshine on your pillow, tempting you to head through the floor-to-ceiling glass sliding doors outside to the terrace. Sip an espresso as you breathe in the warm, sweet-scented air. 

The outside space has been as thoughtfully considered as the house. There’s something for everyone, whether you’re a sun-worshipper or prefer to lounge in the shade. Table tennis will keep the big kids entertained, while you cool off in the refreshing solar-heated pool. There’s a gym inside, too, so you can easily get a workout in – though we might be more tempted by a yoga session on the terrace. 

When you want to explore further afield, you might stroll to Galé beach, or perhaps hop in the car to visit Troia. History buffs will enjoy seeing the Roman ruins at Cetobriga, while golfers might choose to stay closer to home – Troia Golf is a five-minute drive from the villa. If we were to tell you of a hideaway that sits in the middle of twelve hectares of lush pine forest in rural Comporta, you might imagine a certain type of home and we're willing to wager that it doesn't look anything like this wonderfully modern residence.

Not only does the boxy white exterior look visually striking from the outside, but this sense of awe will continue as you step through the glass doors. Our favourite space is the double-height living, which is flooded with natural light from the copious number of windows that line the walls. However, the modern brown kitchen and equally glossy bathrooms are sure to take your breath away, as well. The design throughout feels cohesive, united by a preference for clean lines, sleek surfaces and chic minimalism.

Given the agreeable climate that this corner of the Iberian peninsula enjoys, you'll likely want to spend as many hours outdoors as possible and that's easy to do here. The long infinity swimming pool is both wonderfully refreshing when the midday sun is at its highest and made all the more relaxing by the heady scent of fragrant herbs and vegetation that grow around the sides. There are plenty of terraces and balconies on which to take a seat and do nothing more strenuous than soak up the rays, but you can also find a tennis court if you fancy a match or two.

Although there's a strong sense of tranquillity from the isolated position, you don't have to venture far to find the Portuguese coastline. Carvalhal and Pego beaches can be reached in ten minutes or so in the car, and there are a few restaurants and bars to be found close to these seaside spots.

Nestled within a private estate, this whitewashed home opens its doors to the natural beauty of the Portuguese coastline. Surrounded by pine and oak trees, this is the perfect setting to switch off and spend lazy days relaxing by the private pool.
