This stylish apartment sits atop the highest hill in Lisbon. Thanks to the hardwood floors, stone wall, small balconies and large windows that fill the space with light, there's a cosy vibe here that will make you feel right at home. Oh, and did we mention the view? Just step out onto the balcony and you'll see the sparkling river in the distance. There's a fully-stocked kitchen that makes cooking a breeze, and your hosts are also more than happy to arrange exciting extras like breakfast delivery, home massages, surf lessons, a cruise on the Tagus and even helicopter rides. Though you're a bit far from Praça do Comércio and the city centre (it's a fifteen-minute bus ride), staying in Graça is worth it. Wonderfully bright and designed with a keen eye for detail, this beautiful apartment in Lisbon’s scenic Mouraria neighbourhood is the ideal base for those wanting to be within easy walking distance of the city’s best sights. Inside, wood floors and a calm blue palette create a cool harmony in each part of the open-plan living space. From the bathroom’s pretty tiles to the mezzanine bedroom’s wall and ceiling, there’s a Mediterranean vibe here in the sky-coloured hues that feel as laid-back as it does chic. We love the French doors that open out onto a Juliet balcony – ideal for perching with your morning coffee while admiring your street’s azulejo-clad buildings. We’re big fans, too, of the nods to Portuguese traditions, like the cork around the bathroom’s sink and the kitchen’s blue and white tiles. Outside of your home, you're just a thirteen-minute walk from the Alfama and its São Jorge Castle, the Santa Justa Lift is a fifteen-minute walk and Praça do Comércio is a twenty-minute stroll from your home. With countless restaurants, shops and some of the city’s oldest fado bars in your neighbourhood too, you’re all set to soak up the city’s culture, food and history in style.

Tucked away on a residential street in Alfama, this home is a triple threat of charm, location, and views. This is a cosy haven with a simple design aesthetic that focuses on functionality and comfort – but we really liked the French doors and the hardwood steps that take you up to the attic bedroom. We were torn between the quaint communal terrace at the back and the spectacular river views from the living room. In the end, we decided to split our time between the two. Want to discover the real Lisbon? Slip on your most comfortable trainers and get lost in the charming labyrinthine streets of Alfama. If you want to save your legs, two of the city's most iconic tram routes pass within five minutes of your hillside home. Music lovers should head to the Museu do Fado, a three-minute walk, while history buffs will enjoy the impressive Castelo de São Jorge and Sé de Lisboa, both ten minutes away.

Boasting a lively, multicultural atmosphere and plenty of parks, art galleries and eateries, Anjos is widely considered to be the trendiest neighbourhood in Lisbon. It’s also very well-connected, just fifteen minutes from the historic centre by public transport yet tucked away from the tourist hustle and bustle. You’ll find this stylish home here, nestled amidst pastel-hued Pombaline architecture and providing the perfect base for those seeking an authentic slice of the city.

This beautiful apartment sits atop the highest of the seven hills of Lisbon, overlooking the sea of red-tiled roofs, in the historical neighbourhood of Graça. You're surrounded by an area steeped in history, starting right at home in this apartment, which was built back in 1920. 

Cloaked in rich tapestry and quirky decor, this home has an undeniable air of splendour. We particularly love the regal piano, calling you for late-night sing-along sessions. But when you step into the kitchen, you'll see how homely and inviting this apartment is, with its colourful tiles and huge dining table fit for family dinners of laughs, drinks, and old stories. It's one that's built to be cooked in, and in this beautiful, well-equipped kitchen, you'll be glad to do so. It also gives you a sneak peek of the jaw-dropping beauty that's outside, the pièce de résistance of this home – the balcony. 

You can step right out onto the balcony from the kitchen and living room, and there's even a smaller one that can be accessed from both bedrooms. From the main balcony, you're treated to one of the best views in all of Lisbon, it's even good enough to rival the nearby Senhora do Monte viewpoint. You'll love spending lazy mornings sipping on coffee, looking out at the view, and feeling the glow of the morning sun on your face, before heading out to explore Lisbon. 

You're steps away from the historic 28 tram, which famously takes passengers to all of Lisbon's most iconic and beautiful neighbourhoods. Alfama, the cathedral, Baixa, all the way to Campo Ourique. Get lost through the city's narrow, winding roads, stop off at quaint bars, and sample traditional Portuguese cuisine, before your feet can no longer carry you and it's time to head back to your apartment. But really, you'll be looking forward to getting back home so you can sip on a glass of local wine and watch the sunset from the best seat in town. Soak it all in before getting the barbecue going for balmy nights of grilled food, drinks, and card games on the balcony.

Like its lovely downstairs neighbour, Quarta Bicicleta is one of the nicest homes in this part of Alfama – and trust us, we've seen many. The location at the foot of the São Jorge Castle will make sightseeing effortless, and the terrace has some pretty sweet views of the river too. With a coherent modern design and high quality furniture, the only thing we can really fault this home for are the slanting ceilings (if you're tall), and the wall art might not be to everyone's taste.

From the red brick facade of the 19th-century bullring of Campo Pequeno, it’s hard to believe that just an eight-minute walk would take you to such a deluxe, modern apartment. In the north of the city, slightly off the tourist track, you’ll also find other lesser-known charms such as the Calouste Gulbenkian Garden – a sculpture park and museum – twelve minutes away. But with the historic centre less than twenty minutes away by metro, you're not exactly missing out on much.

After exploring the delights of Lisbon (and feeling full of pastéis de nata) arriving home to this spacious apartment is a dream. The grand living space features animal skin rugs and mid-century seating along with a modern, perspex coffee table. This mixture of eras and styles creates a sophisticated space where you can relax with a glass of douro on the sofa, or perch on the balcony with a vinho verde.

Draw yourself away from the views of the vibrant, pink of the neighbouring buildings, and head in to freshen up in Portuguese white marble bathrooms. And for a final flourish, the dining space is ready to host elegant dinner parties – why not try cooking bacalhau à Brás to really set the scene?

The whole building’s been recently renovated, giving it a fresh and clean feel. Inside the apartment itself, there's a tranquil ambiance thanks to the blue and cream colour scheme, reminding you that the water's edge isn't too far away. The open-plan setup makes it easy to chat with your guests while you cook, before serving up your culinary creations at the handsome wooden table. And there's even a little balcony, so you can breathe in some fresh air as you enjoy a nightcap at the end of a long day. 

From here, you're in the perfect position to roam Graça's winding streets, discovering hidden gems like quaint port bars and artisanal boutiques. The Miradouro da Graça, with its stunning panoramic views, is only a seven-minute walk away, and the Miradouro da Senhora do Monte is even closer. And, if you want to tick off your sightseeing list, then the Castelo de São Jorge and Lisbon Cathedral are within a fifteen-minute stroll.

Begin the morning out there with a strong cup of coffee and pasteis de nata in the fresh air – your host can also arrange breakfast – and close the day with a glass of Vinho Verde come nightfall. You'll also have access to a communal garden, which is perfect for picnics in the late-afternoon sunshine. Inside, the sleek design is complemented by brilliant pops of red. Sprawl out on the sofa for a post-sightseeing catnap or gather around the table for a typical Portuguese dinner. 

Another thing we adore is the location. You're a bit further away from the hustle and bustle in the city centre, but with the famous 28 Tram a short walk away, you won't have to travel far to see the sights. Here, narrow streets are flanked by local restaurants, bakeries and open-air cafes, all serving up delectable regional dishes. Make sure to take in the panoramic views from the hilltop observation points – our favourite is Miradouro da Senhora do Monte, easily reached on foot. Or, explore in style and ask your host to arrange river cruises, helicopter tours and other experiences.

This beautifully bright apartment between Lisbon's Chiado and Alfama neighbourhoods has it all – a great location and a blend of modern styling and character features. Summing up this historic part of Lisbon perfectly, it's in a typical Pombalina building – freshly renovated with impeccable attention to detail. If local period architecture is of interest to you, you'll love the high, ornately decorated ceilings, the tall windows and the traditional narrow balcony with wrought iron railings. And it's not too hard to spot the building's defining feature – the Pombalina wooden cage built in to strengthen the stone buildings after the great earthquake of the 1750s. Bright and smartly designed, this charming home has been reimagined for the 21st century, with a cool black kitchen, mid-century modern furniture and tasteful wall art. Comfortable and welcoming, you'll spend your mornings sipping coffee, watching the street come to life from your balcony. The two bedrooms are pared-back yet elegantly dressed, while the two spa-like bathrooms with their rainfall showers are a treat to wake up to each morning. Outside of your home, both the Santa Justa Lift and Praça do Comércio are a seven-minute walk away, São Jorge Castle is walkable in eight and Lisbon Cathedral is a mere three minutes on foot from your door. With the Mercado da Baixa a six-minute stroll away too for fresh produce as well as countless restaurants, shops and bars in your neighbourhood, you've got everything you need for a fun, culture-filled stay.

Natural textures, sumptuous soft furnishing and whitewashed walls create a calming atmosphere – we loved nothing more than sinking into the couch with a good book and a glass of local green wine in hand. If home cooking is on the agenda, the sleek kitchen is equipped with everything you need for whipping up tasty dishes. 

Spend lazy afternoons on your private terrace or floating about in the communal pool. If you’re itching to explore, it’s less than a five-minute walk to a craft brewery and just footsteps from a contemporary art gallery. The centre of Lisbon is reached in fifteen minutes by car – we recommend taking a wander through charming Alfama before watching the sunset from the Senhora do Monte viewpoint.

In the heart of Lisbon’s historic centre, this apartment is a five-minute walk to the waterside Praça do Comércio lined with shops and restaurants on the River Tagus. Winding, cobbled streets packed with bars and restaurants lead from the apartment to Castelo de S. Jorge on the hilltop, a ten-minute walk away. True to its historic surroundings, this home retains some original features of the traditional Pombaline building it’s housed in. A wooden frame from the post-earthquake reconstruction of 1755 juts out into the living room. Bold black and gold artwork has been hand-picked to complement the wooden structure. Waking up in the master bedroom is a real treat as sunlight streams through French windows, which can be opened up to create a Juliet balcony.

Sitting on a street boasting one of the oldest houses in Lisbon – dating back almost five hundred years – this beautiful spot in the Alfama district paints a picture of what the capital looked like pre-earthquake. And although this bright apartment isn't half that old, it's surrounded by quaint, winding streets full of photo opportunities, fado houses and picturesque squares. 
 
You’ll instantly be charmed by the dazzling amount of natural light that fills this home thanks to the trio of French doors in the living room that gives way to a private narrow balcony. Perch here in the morning with a fresh cup of coffee while taking in views of the square below or gather here at sundown for a glass of wine before exploring the local dining scene. 
 
The window-side table beckons intimate breakfasts over locally bought pastéis de nata or cosy dinners at home when you’re not experiencing the city’s nightlife, while the pared-back bedroom offers the ideal canvas for a perfectly restful night’s sleep. Walk the winding streets of this neighbourhood to immerse yourself in the culture and architecture of Lisbon. When the hills get a bit too much, you can always hop onto one of the iconic trams as they weave their way through the city. You're four minutes' walk from the breathtaking city views of Miradouro de São Pedro, a six-minute walk from the opulent interior of the Church of Sao Roque, and six minutes from the mournful sounds of fado that accompany dinner at legendary Lisbon restaurant, Adega Machado. At the end of a day of exploring, retreat to your sleek and modern home, where traditional features harmoniously coexist with minimalist modern furniture – it's a stark contrast to the art-daubed cobbled streets below. We love the natural light and the roomy bedrooms, which make getting up in the morning an absolute pleasure.

Its maze-like streets are a joy to get lost in, and the nearby waterfront is a popular nightlife spot, so make sure to pack a pair of shoes for every occasion. This apartment stands out for its minimalist modern design in this historic area. There's a lot of space for you to enjoy, filled only by a few select pieces of furniture, which sets you up for a relaxing stay without lots of clutter around. There's a bedroom balcony, which isn't huge, but it does offer a brilliant view of the Sé Cathedral – which offers a taste of what the city has in store. So, lace up your trainers and set out to explore the city's seven hills. You're only a few minutes from the impressive Praça do Comércio and the grid-like shopping streets of downtown Baixa. If you fancy exploring further afield, then you're close to the Sé stop of the iconic 28 tram.

The Creative State

Cosy and charming, this studio apartment may be compact, but it certainly is comfortable. You'll find it in a historic building that was once owned by the Menezes family, and this heritage is evident with an exposed stone wall and a quaint Juliet balcony overlooking the street and offering a partial view of the Tagus. We love how the combined living/sleeping space is bathed in Portuguese sunlight – our only quibble is the kitchen, which is quite tiny. That said, it gets the job done for breakfasts and light bites, and besides, Lisbon is home to some truly fantastic eateries and delicious local cuisine – we doubt you'll get up to much cooking, anyway.

As for discovering these top-notch eateries, you won't have to travel far. This is one of the most authentic districts in Lisbon, where restaurants are tucked away down steep, cobbled alleyways and cafes flank the bustling squares. You're right in the centre, too, just a seventeen-minute stroll from Praça do Comércio – as far as locales go, you can't really beat it. And, if your feet need a break from all the walking, a handy metro station is also nearby – win, win.

Located right next to the leafy gardens of the Gulbenkian Foundation and Museum, this bright apartment is the ideal stay for those wanting to get away from the hustle and bustle of central Lisbon. Though this neighbourhood is set a little further from the busier stretches of town, there are plenty of places nearby to grab a cup of coffee, do some boutique shopping or tuck into a delicious dinner. And with a metro station just a ten-minute walk away, getting around the rest of the city is a breeze. You'll love retreating to this quiet neck of the woods after a busy day, and this sleek and cosy apartment is the definition of relaxing. With a modern kitchen, comfortable living room (the plush blue couch is perfect for lounging) and stylish bedrooms, you'll have everything you need to feel completely at home. Maria, your friendly host, even leaves a bottle of Portuguese wine for you to enjoy. Take it out onto the balcony – which overlooks the gardens – and savour it as the sun goes down.

Located a five-minute walk from São Jorge Castle and ten minutes to Sé Cathedral – both excellent starting points for a day of sightseeing – it's the perfect choice for a romantic weekend getaway or a convenient base for a solo traveller who wants to be within walking distance of the action.

Climb up the stairs and enter this bright and comfortable apartment, decorated with stylish simplicity in mind. Up here on the second floor, the open-plan kitchen/dining/living room is the undoubted heart of the home. 

We particularly enjoyed the treetop views that will accompany your culinary efforts in the kitchenette prior to sitting down to dine around the table. After dinner, feel free to unwind on the sofa or head to bed and watch TV in supreme comfort.

If you're quite particular about location, then this apartment is the place for you. Situated inside a period building on Rua de Santa Justa, you'll be able to spot Arco da Rua Augusta from the living room, and walk to Elevador de Santa Justa in just one minute – it doesn't get much more convenient than that. Beautifully restored and filled with light, this home is as stylish as it is comfortable. We especially loved the kitchen's bright yellow tiles, where you can prepare a delicious meal using fresh ingredients to share at the sleek glass table. There's also a desk for catching up on work, and a plush sofa where you can put your feet up and enjoy some Portuguese wine – but with so much to do right on your doorstep, we think you'll hardly find the time.

If you're here for work, you'll be glad to know this apartment has a dedicated workstation. After checking your emails, you can have a cold glass of wine on the private balcony (accessed from the bedroom and living space).

With a fabulous central location and set in a renovated period building, this home is simple, smart, and a little bit sassy. Painted all white, with shuttered windows and warm wood floors, it's a traditional apartment with some far from traditional wall art (we see you, Julia Roberts). A bright living area boasts a particularly squashy corner sofa and a modern dining table with chairs for up to six. The kitchen is sleek and modern, with all you could need to whip up light meals, and the bedrooms are spacious and full of natural light. You'll even have a narrow balcony here, on which to sip coffee, read a newspaper and people watch on the street below. On the lower side of Alfama, you'll get to enjoy a view of the Sé Cathedral, and all the city's sights are within walking distance – we recommend you start your tour at the nearby Praça do Comércio.

Look in any direction at this home and you’ll have the Tejo river or São Vicente de Fora waiting for you in all their beauty. The terraces here are practically private viewpoints where you can bask in the sun and admire the entire city – enjoy a meal at the picnic-style table or lounge on the Adirondacks (which double as a spectacular sunset spot). Honestly, in a city known for its miradouros, (meaning viewpoints in Portuguese), it’s possible that you might not find a better one than your own personal terrace. Inside, there's another kind of grandeur with marble floors and fireplaces, rattan bedroom walls and terracotta floor tiles creating an elegant, shabby chic vibe to the penthouse. And lest we forget to mention, you’ll be staying within the walls of Castelo São Jorge. Discover the historic heart of the city, where you can explore many of the cities’ churches and sights on foot along with local seafood restaurants, Portuguese cafes and traditional Fado houses.

Getting lost in Mouraria's winding streets is a trip into the past, and part of the neighbourhood's authentic appeal. The Azure Terrace is situated in a house typical for the neighbourhood, which means that the outside (in stark contrast to the home itself) is a bit scruffy. The Azure Terrace is a home with all the features we want to see in a Lisbon Plum home – a private terrace, cute rustic design with lots of modern features and plenty of natural light. The abundance of fado shown in the vicinity is just a bonus.

We tested this home in the winter, so the outside spaces don't look as appealing as they will in the summer, but the building itself hides the remains of a Roman settlement, so you'll be living and breathing history. 

Nova Inspirada

The Baixa district was completely rebuilt after an earthquake destroyed it in the mid-eighteenth century – now it's lined with neoclassical architecture, outstanding museums, stunning squares, and plenty of shopping opportunities, and this characterful apartment is right in the heart of it. Just a five-minute walk to the Praça do Comércio, you'll feel immersed in Lisbon's culture, history and commercial centre. Verging on old-timey Alfama, you really couldn't be better placed location-wise for all there is to eat, drink and do here. If you feel like a quiet indoor moment's downtime, relax in the bright, contemporary living/dining area with a glass of Lisbon wine. We love how the original features are still intact, while the modern furniture merges old and new in elegant fashion.
