Situated in the charming area of Graça, this luminous flat is a cosy retreat in one of Lisbon's most authentic neighbourhoods. The sun-kissed private terrace is our favourite spot. Begin the morning out there with a strong cup of coffee and pasteis de nata in the fresh air – your host can also arrange breakfast – and close the day with a glass of Vinho Verde come nightfall. You'll also have access to a communal garden, which is perfect for picnics in the late-afternoon sunshine. Inside, the sleek design is complemented by brilliant pops of red. Sprawl out on the sofa for a post-sightseeing catnap or gather around the table for a typical Portuguese dinner. 

Another thing we adore is the location. You're a bit further away from the hustle and bustle in the city centre, but with the famous 28 Tram a short walk away, you won't have to travel far to see the sights. Here, narrow streets are flanked by local restaurants, bakeries and open-air cafes, all serving up delectable regional dishes. Make sure to take in the panoramic views from the hilltop observation points – our favourite is Miradouro da Senhora do Monte, easily reached on foot. Or, explore in style and ask your host to arrange river cruises, helicopter tours and other experiences.

Summing up this historic part of Lisbon perfectly, it's in a typical Pombalina building – freshly renovated with impeccable attention to detail. If local period architecture is of interest to you, you'll love the high, ornately decorated ceilings, the tall windows and the traditional narrow balcony with wrought iron railings. And it's not too hard to spot the building's defining feature – the Pombalina wooden cage built in to strengthen the stone buildings after the great earthquake of the 1750s. Bright and smartly designed, this charming home has been reimagined for the 21st century, with a cool black kitchen, mid-century modern furniture and tasteful wall art. Comfortable and welcoming, you'll spend your mornings sipping coffee, watching the street come to life from your balcony. The two bedrooms are pared-back yet elegantly dressed, while the two spa-like bathrooms with their rainfall showers are a treat to wake up to each morning. Outside of your home, both the Santa Justa Lift and Praça do Comércio are a seven-minute walk away, São Jorge Castle is walkable in eight and Lisbon Cathedral is a mere three minutes on foot from your door. A home for connoisseurs of contemporary design, it's the glass-topped atrium garden taking all the glory here – and rightly so. Cleverly connecting the bedroom and living spaces and flooding the home with natural light, the terraces are an atmospheric place to hang out come day or night.

Inside, the hosts have injected some serious personality and style into this home. Statement lighting and feature walls add interest, while colourful ceramics remind you Lisbon's streets aren't far away. 

Friends or family sharing will love how spread apart the bedrooms feel for added privacy, and there's heaps of space in the living areas. While some of you rustle up a bite to eat in the made-for-action kitchen, the rest can keep you company at the breakfast bar stools or spill out into the lounge.

Lingering over coffees and pastel de natas in the quiet of the atrium, you'd hardly believe how central this home is. Oh, and did we mention the view? Just step out onto the balcony and you'll see the sparkling river in the distance. There's a fully-stocked kitchen that makes cooking a breeze, and your hosts are also more than happy to arrange exciting extras like breakfast delivery, home massages, surf lessons, a cruise on the Tagus and even helicopter rides. Though you're a bit far from Praça do Comércio and the city centre (it's a fifteen-minute bus ride), staying in Graça is worth it. You'll find colourful houses, local restaurants making traditional Portuguese fare and independent shops nestled amongst the cobblestone alleyways. Not to mention this area has some of the best viewpoints in Lisbon – we suggest Miradouro da Graça, which is a fifteen-minute walk away.

Ideally located in the heart of Lisbon, a short walk from landmarks like Praça do Comércio and the Sé, not to mention mere footsteps from excellent restaurants, this apartment couldn’t be better placed. Thanks to the flexible sleeping arrangements in the second bedroom, this home suits all travelling types. And the fully-equipped kitchen suits those wanting to stay for a longer period. Though if you’d prefer not to cook, your host can provide breakfast deliveries and private chefs as an optional extra.

True to its historic surroundings, this home retains some original features of the traditional Pombaline building it’s housed in. A wooden frame from the post-earthquake reconstruction of 1755 juts out into the living room. Bold black and gold artwork has been hand-picked to complement the wooden structure. Waking up in the master bedroom is a real treat as sunlight streams through French windows, which can be opened up to create a Juliet balcony.

This laid-back home in Chiado is perfect for those looking to be in the heart of Lisbon’s action. Surrounded by some of the city’s best sights, this unpresumptuous home allows its open spaces and huge windows do the talking, with a minimalist design aesthetic that feels as chic as it does calm. We love the living room’s tall corniced ceilings and the large shuttered windows that make the whole space feel bright. The kitchen, too, is a masterclass in elegant simplicity, concentrating on natural textures – a marble countertop and hardwood floors – and featuring a long table that just begs to be gathered around for morning and evening feasts. The two pared-back bedrooms complete the home, along with an azulejo adorned bathroom that gives the apartment a touch of Portuguese traditionalism. Away from the apartment, you’re just a seven-minute walk from the bustling Time Out food market, a fifteen-minute walk from Praça do Comércio and a twenty-five-minute stroll from São Jorge Castle. Bairro Alto is also right around the corner, five minutes away, with its bohemian cobbled streets packed with hip boutiques, quirky bars and intimate fado bars.

In cities across the globe, it's more often than not true that the closer a home is to the centre, the less likely it is that it'll have any outdoor space. This apartment in the middle of Lisbon bucks this trend – not only does it have a private terrace with an alfresco dining table, but guests also get access to a communal garden that's blessed with bountiful amounts of plant life.

While these respective spaces are an explosion of colour, the home's interior is much simpler by contrast. The walls and ceilings are painted stark white, which makes it feel instantly bright and welcoming. There's a minimalist approach to furnishings and decoration, although the kitchen that could kindly be described as space-efficient perhaps embraces this trend a little too much. Aside from that, there's very little to fault with this simple but elegant home.

To top it all off, the location is excellent regardless if you're visiting Lisbon for the first or fiftieth time. Both Museu Nacional do Azulejo and Castelo de São Jorge can be reached in around twenty minutes on foot, albeit in opposite directions, while Praça do Comércio takes all of eighteen minutes to reach on the tram.

Location might be the most important consideration when you’re booking an escape to the city, but with this home in the heart of Lisbon that doesn’t mean compromising on style. Already crisp, minimal, and understated, you can also add bright to the list as soon as you open the shuttered windows dotted around this home. With the light streaming in, the contrast of the mostly white interior will make the green of the house plants look all the more vivid, whilst creating a calming and rejuvenating atmosphere. Enjoy the mezzanine bedroom by staying in bed with a good book and a cup of coffee. Eventually, you can make your way down to the sleek kitchen to grab a bite to eat before setting off to explore the city on your doorstep. 

The iconic Lisbon Cathedral is a thirty-minute walk away, but there are plenty of restaurants and cafes along the way to make a pit stop, or two, at. Put your photography skills to the test as you try to capture the vibrance of the city as you make the twenty-three-minute walk to the monumental 1940 Fonte Luminosa. There are also plenty of museums to explore and then Time Out Market lies in wait at the other end of an eighteen-minute trip on the public transport. Wherever your feet take you, you can always head back to this homely oasis when you need to put them up and simply relax.

This home feels comfortable, high-end, and characterful. It’s hard to ask for more, but we picked it apart and here’s what we found. The Handhake's baren bones are great – this home is located inside a renovated Baixa townhouse, which has high ceilings and French windows as standard, but the host didn’t rely solely on that. There are a few nice pieces of art in here, notably the statuettes and the mirrors in the bedroom, which give it a modern look.

Less than a five-minute stroll away from Praça do Comércio, Lisbon Cathedral and the River Tagus, this apartment is perfectly placed for exploring. Stroll down Rua Augusta with a coffee and pastry, pop in and out of the independent shops nearby or grab a bite to eat at the array of restaurants on your doorstep. Whatever you fancy – be it historical monuments or lively bars – chances are, it's within walking distance. When you're not taking advantage of this central spot, unwind back at home with a glass of wine and music playing on the Bluetooth speaker. Set within a renovated Pombaline style building, the host's have expertly merged original features with modern design, creating a trendy and clean living space with mid-century furniture, a laid-back natural colour scheme and heaps of natural lights. Our favourite feature has to be the Juliet balconies on the windows – fling open the doors and admire the views of Lisbon's hills and charming streets below.

From the red brick facade of the 19th-century bullring of Campo Pequeno, it’s hard to believe that just an eight-minute walk would take you to such a deluxe, modern apartment. In the north of the city, slightly off the tourist track, you’ll also find other lesser-known charms such as the Calouste Gulbenkian Garden – a sculpture park and museum – twelve minutes away. But with the historic centre less than twenty minutes away by metro, you're not exactly missing out on much.

After exploring the delights of Lisbon (and feeling full of pastéis de nata) arriving home to this spacious apartment is a dream. The grand living space features animal skin rugs and mid-century seating along with a modern, perspex coffee table. This mixture of eras and styles creates a sophisticated space where you can relax with a glass of douro on the sofa, or perch on the balcony with a vinho verde.

Draw yourself away from the views of the vibrant, pink of the neighbouring buildings, and head in to freshen up in Portuguese white marble bathrooms. And for a final flourish, the dining space is ready to host elegant dinner parties – why not try cooking bacalhau à Brás to really set the scene?

It’s hard to choose our favourite feature here – from the living room’s curved bubble sofa to the leaf-print walls and the grand dining table with its jewel-tone velvet seats, there’s an air of modern sophistication here that reflects the city’s eclecticism. Ample natural light pours in through the living area’s arched French doors that give way to pretty Juliet balconies with views of the street below. Perch here with your evening glass of Portuguese wine when you’re not out sampling Pink Street’s famous nightlife, and end the night with a deliciously comfortable sleep in the blue and green bedrooms. Factor in the pair of bathrooms with their relaxing rainfall showers, and you’ve got everything you need for a blissful stay. 
 
When it comes to sightseeing, discover Pink Street’s many bars and eateries nearby, or make a beeline for Praça do Comércio, a ten-minute walk away. You’re also a six-minute stroll from the popular Time Out Market, a ten-minute walk from the Santa Justa Lift, and the Alfama district is twenty minutes away on foot. With the iconic Tram 28 passing by just 100 metres from your door too, the city is yours for the taking.

The home's corner position in the building means there is natural light from several sides here, and we love the small balcony – with the stunning views, this is no generic I-could-be-anywhere home, as you'll definitely know you're in Lisbon. Outside, the Alfama district has plenty of history to explore, and you're not far from the coast either.

Situated in Mouraria, home to sun-dappled cobbled lanes and the bustling Martim Moniz square that erupts with Asian, African, and Arabic flavours, this apartment is a perfect choice for those wanting to explore the city’s history. There’s a focus on relaxation here, with a no-fuss approach to the interiors and a private terrace where you’ll spend mornings soaking up the glorious Iberian sunshine. Take inspiration from the exploration themed artwork as you sip an espresso or sit down at the contemporary dining table and put the finishing touches to your agenda. Located in a historical building in Picoas, which was designed by the esteemed Modernist architect Cassiano Branco, Mind Garden is a unique home. While the furniture is quite unobtrusive, the bare architectural bones take centre stage, expressing themselves most obviously in the dining pavilion. Natural light will never be a problem in this home, but taller guests might not appreciate the sloping ceilings in the communal area. While the streets of Picoas aren't as central as Baixa, they are extremely well-connected to the riverside while maintaining a local flavour.

Mind Garden

Historic Alfama, with its medieval warren of streets, is just a twelve-minute walk from this modern home, while the chic boutiques of Chiado are a fifteen-minute saunter. The harbour-facing square, Praça do Comércio, on the other hand, is a mere four-minute stroll and is surrounded by an array of eateries – your host can make restaurant reservations for you if you wish. It's the same walking distance to Sé de Lisboa, the city's beautiful cathedral – although you don't have to go anywhere to admire it, you can see it from this stylish apartment's windows. It's plain to see this gorgeous home belongs to a designer. The generous space is furnished with standout pieces of furniture and fabulous modern art. If you don't fancy eating out, whip up a Portuguese feast in the kitchen and enjoy it at your dining table – this place is perfect for entertaining.

The Creative Process

Look in any direction at this home and you’ll have the Tejo river or São Vicente de Fora waiting for you in all their beauty. The terraces here are practically private viewpoints where you can bask in the sun and admire the entire city – enjoy a meal at the picnic-style table or lounge on the Adirondacks (which double as a spectacular sunset spot). Honestly, in a city known for its miradouros, (meaning viewpoints in Portuguese), it’s possible that you might not find a better one than your own personal terrace. Inside, there's another kind of grandeur with marble floors and fireplaces, rattan bedroom walls and terracotta floor tiles creating an elegant, shabby chic vibe to the penthouse. And lest we forget to mention, you’ll be staying within the walls of Castelo São Jorge. With a palatial façade, stunning minimalist interiors, and proximity to the poshest shopping street in Lisbon, Nova Inspirada packs quite a punch. But don't be fooled by the central location – this home is tucked away on a quiet street where you can relax on any of your many terraces, which includes the communal atrium. We tested this home in the winter, so the outside spaces don't look as appealing as they will in the summer, but the building itself hides the remains of a Roman settlement, so you'll be living and breathing history.

Situated in the heart of a bustling Lisbon street, this home is in a central spot for quick access to nearby shops and restaurants. We recommend travelling by foot so you can take a good look at the gorgeous Portuguese architecture throughout the city. Sip a morning coffee on the balcony and head out to the streets below to experience the daily life of the locals.

Take a ride on a tram to explore deeper into Lisbon, or step out of the apartment for a relaxing stroll to find the hidden gems. A huge selection of restaurants is available – perfect for a meal out with the family. If you haven't brought children with you, we suggest visiting one of the many bars located nearby to the apartment for a lush night out on the town. You're on holiday, so you're going to want some bubbly to celebrate.

Head back home to pop the TV on, while you rest your aching feet from a day of adventuring. Snuggle up to the warmth of the wood–burning fireplace with some comfy socks and while away the rest of the night reading your favourite book.

You will need to bring your own essentials, but it’s well suited to families and remote works with plenty of desk space. Outside, you can stroll to cafes, restaurants and bars, while the nearby public transport links make it easy to explore central Lisbon.

This beautiful apartment sits atop the highest of the seven hills of Lisbon, overlooking the sea of red-tiled roofs, in the historical neighbourhood of Graça. You're surrounded by an area steeped in history, starting right at home in this apartment, which was built back in 1920. 

Cloaked in rich tapestry and quirky decor, this home has an undeniable air of splendour. We particularly love the regal piano, calling you for late-night sing-along sessions. But when you step into the kitchen, you'll see how homely and inviting this apartment is, with its colourful tiles and huge dining table fit for family dinners of laughs, drinks, and old stories. It's one that's built to be cooked in, and in this beautiful, well-equipped kitchen, you'll be glad to do so. It also gives you a sneak peek of the jaw-dropping beauty that's outside, the pièce de résistance of this home – the balcony. 

You can step right out onto the balcony from the kitchen and living room, and there's even a smaller one that can be accessed from both bedrooms. From the main balcony, you're treated to one of the best views in all of Lisbon, it's even good enough to rival the nearby Senhora do Monte viewpoint. You'll love spending lazy mornings sipping on coffee, looking out at the view, and feeling the glow of the morning sun on your face, before heading out to explore Lisbon. 

You're steps away from the historic 28 tram, which famously takes passengers to all of Lisbon's most iconic and beautiful neighbourhoods. Alfama, the cathedral, Baixa, all the way to Campo Ourique. Get lost through the city's narrow, winding roads, stop off at quaint bars, and sample traditional Portuguese cuisine, before your feet can no longer carry you and it's time to head back to your apartment. But really, you'll be looking forward to getting back home so you can sip on a glass of local wine and watch the sunset from the best seat in town. Soak it all in before getting the barbecue going for balmy nights of grilled food, drinks, and card games on the balcony.

Walk less than ten minutes to reach the narrow, bar-stuffed streets of Bairro Alto, or make the eight-minute stroll to the dramatic ruins of Carmo Convent.

Returning to this apartment, you’re met with a vintage-chic interior. Art Nouveau rugs, an azulejo-tiled wall feature and tropical-fern-clad sofas feel as though the host has dipped into the vintage markets to decorate this place. Metres from the National Pantheon and the city’s famous Feira da Ladra flea market, this Alfama apartment is right in the heart of historic Lisbon. Inside, it’s a more modern affair with geometric feature walls, splashes of colour and mid-century furnishings. Enjoy the sweet and fluffy bolas de Berlim from your welcome hamper with a full-bodied espresso in the morning – eat together at the dining table or take a moment for yourself on the Juliet balcony, watching people come and go in the streets below as bedsheets flutter on washing lines. Wander through the higgledy-piggledy alleyways, discovering traditional tavernas shaded by orange trees in cobbled squares. Santa Apolónia metro station is a ten-minute walk downhill, connecting you to downtown. Come back to your neighbourhood just before dusk – the Miradouro de Santa Luzia is, in our opinion, the best spot to watch the sunset – especially with a glass of Vinho Verde from the kiosk. 

Fractured Glass

This fantastic home is located in Bairro Alto, with all of its fantastic restaurants and bars. If you fancy a bit of shopping, Chiado is a ten-minute stroll away – its streets are packed with chic boutiques, interesting bookshops and literary cafes. Take some snaps of the beautiful Lisbon Cathedral, a twenty-minute walk from this home, or explore São Jorge Castle, a twelve-minute saunter. Time Out Market, on the other hand, is just over ten minutes on foot – browse its shops and market vendors selling fresh food and flowers. You’ll also find over twenty restaurants and stylish music venues here (your host can make dinner reservations for you). If you don’t want to eat out, cook some local Portuguese produce from the market in the sleek kitchen – we adore this bright, open-plan space – there's a splendid socially conducive atmosphere here. This place has been playfully and expertly designed by your lovely host Patrícia. Thanks to the high-quality furniture and materials, this home looks and feels amazing – once you stay, you won't want to leave.

Inspiradora

Situated in Alfama, this well-appointment apartment has the very best of historic Lisbon on its doorstep. The Miradouro de Santa Luzia (one of the best viewpoints in the city) and bustling Praça do Comércio are within walking distance, and there’s a Tram 28 tram stop a couple of hundred metres away. The age of the building means you may hear the neighbours during your stay, so we recommend packing earplugs if you’re a light sleeper. There are also some signs of wear and tear in the bathroom, though this is cosmetic, and everything works as it should.

The Sheer Magic

Perched on top of a renovated townhouse, View & Walkability boasts a fantastic location and a great view from the balcony. Rua de São Nicolau is within walking distance to all the central sights, restaurants, and cafes – but the central location does translate to a vibrant atmosphere that won't suit those who are looking for a tranquil stay. Our favourite hangout spot in this home is the balcony, which is great for a morning coffee, but even on rainy days, the living room gets great natural light. We also loved the eclectic design that mixes the old and new.

View & Walkability

Tucked away in a quiet corner of Graça, away from the hordes of tourists in Baixa and the Bairro Alto, you'll find this comfortable apartment. If you're keen to experience a more authentic side to Lisbon and immerse yourself in the city's unique charms, then it's the ideal place to call home during your stay. 

The whole building’s been recently renovated, giving it a fresh and clean feel. Inside the apartment itself, there's a tranquil ambiance thanks to the blue and cream colour scheme, reminding you that the water's edge isn't too far away. The open-plan setup makes it easy to chat with your guests while you cook, before serving up your culinary creations at the handsome wooden table. And there's even a little balcony, so you can breathe in some fresh air as you enjoy a nightcap at the end of a long day. 

From here, you're in the perfect position to roam Graça's winding streets, discovering hidden gems like quaint port bars and artisanal boutiques. The Miradouro da Graça, with its stunning panoramic views, is only a seven-minute walk away, and the Miradouro da Senhora do Monte is even closer. And, if you want to tick off your sightseeing list, then the Castelo de São Jorge and Lisbon Cathedral are within a fifteen-minute stroll. 

Fishermen Tales

Compact but cosy, this central apartment is a great base for exploring Lisbon. The balcony is a sweet bonus – not to mention the perfect spot to enjoy a cup of coffee and a pastel de nata before setting off. Since it's on the third floor without a lift, this home won't suit guests who struggle with stairs. One bedroom is smaller than the other – it's a good option for kids – and the kitchen lacks an oven, so dining out will likely be on the cards. Even so, you've got a wealth of options nearby, plus you're walking distance from attractions like Praça do Comércio (twenty minutes away), Santa Justa Lift (fifteen minutes) and the Tram 28.

Dias de Amor

Small but mighty, this bold home in the Graça district has some of Lisbon's most iconic landmarks within walking distance. The National Pantheon, Sé Cathedral and São Jorge Castle lie minutes away, and Feira da Ladra, the famous flea market, operates close by. Although the apartment is compact, it has enough room for a small family, and there's a balcony – with fantastic city views, no less – where you can enjoy alfresco breakfasts or late-night drinks. You also have all of Lisbon at your feet, but it's worth mentioning it's a steep walk back up to the home, plus another flight of steps to reach the first floor – luckily, there's a tram stop nearby.

The area between Avenida and Saldanha is home to a lot of offices, which attracts a young professionals crowd – and with it, a fun mixture of cafes and restaurants that will keep you busy locally. Let's Get Lexical is one of those hazy, sunny homes that will make you feel like you're waking up in a beach house, even though you'll be fifteen minutes away from the Sāo Jorge Castle. The text prints are a matter of personal taste, but if you're not bothered by their relentless inspiration, then you've probably found the one.

This apartment might be modern, but the view is all old-world Lisbon. Inside, the living room feels like a 60s entertainer’s paradise, with velvet sofas, gallery-white walls and curious sculptures lining the room. Slide open the wall of glass and step out onto the terrace which has a view of modern Lisbon in one direction, and the orange roofs and townhouses of old in the other. The kitchen continues the charming retro theme, where lipstick red dining chairs offer space for the whole group. The master bedroom feels super plush with a purple velvet feature headboard, while the twin room is a cheerful shade of sunflower-yellow. We love the little nod to Portuguese tradition in the azelujo tiles in the family bathroom. This place is in the modern neighbourhood of Saldanha, a haven of sleek shopping streets and ultra-modern coffee shops. A twenty-minute stroll sees you in the winding, cobbled streets of Alfama, crowned with a castle, or the grand streets of Baixa packed with local restaurants and bars.

When it comes to exploring the local area, walk eighteen minutes to take a stroll through Parque Eduardo VII or treat yourself to some retail therapy on luxurious Avenida da Liberdade. You’re also a twenty-minute walk from the Miradouro da Penha de França viewing point with its panoramic views over the city, while the historic Alfama district is thirty minutes away by public transport.
