Up above the town of Ponta do Sol on Madeira’s south coast, this sugar-cube style apartment embraces traditional architecture on the outside and minimalist modernity inside. The view of Ponta do Sol – a series of orange-roofed buildings tumbling down the hillside to the deep blue sea – is framed by tropical plants, and settling into the beanbag-like chairs on the private terrace is the perfect spot to take it all in. A sparkling rectangle of infinity pool is shared with one other apartment, along with the hillside hot tub. Inside, the walls are kept pristine white without a hint of clutter, and the light-wood kitchen is brightened by sunlight streaming in through a wall of glass. On the top floor of a historic building in the old part of town, it's set on a narrow street with shops, bars, and restaurants below – yet it's still surprisingly quiet at night. A good size for a couple or a small family, it has modern interiors, all-white walls, and pretty parquet flooring. The living space includes a small but well-equipped kitchen and a dining table, while the bedroom is behind a large set of pocket doors, meaning it can be closed off for privacy or remain open to create a more flexible space. But this home's crowning glory is definitely its spacious private terrace. With tables and chairs, it's the perfect spot for breakfast each morning or pre-dinner drinks in the evenings. Close by you'll find the famous farmers’ market (Mercado dos Lavradores), the historic centre of Funchal and the Cathedral, while Funchal Marina is within walking distance too.

If you fancy a change of scenery, though, you’re within easy reach of Praia Formosa, known for its black pebbles and sand. Settle in for a day of sunbathing or slip into your swimming trunks and go for a refreshing dip in the glistening water followed by a small plate or two at one of the local restaurants. Then, when you’ve had your daily dose of being out and about, head back home and watch the sun set from your private balcony. We can’t think of a better way to end the day.

Sunny mornings call for lazy breakfasts at the bistro table for two with the balcony doors flung open wide. There's everything you could need to rustle up brunch and mimosas in the designer kitchen with a view. Or keep things easy and do like the locals with freshly brewed coffees and obligatory pastel de natas.

When it's time to stretch your legs and explore, you can easily wander to all the city's hotspots from here – starting with the charming marina for a dose of fresh sea air. Then the rest of the day is yours to lose yourself to the city's atmospheric streets, stumbling across Fado bars for live music and Poncha cocktails along the way – just like you imagined.

Take advantage of Madeira's year-round warm climate and relax on this modern apartment's balcony and roof terrace. There's a barbecue up here for a lunchtime feast, and we love the views over the city. Or cool off from the sun in the communal pool. There's a children's play area within this gated development too, so this place is perfect for families as well as friends. Inside the apartment, you'll find large sliding patio doors allowing plenty of natural light to flood in and a monochrome scheme.

The location is excellent, too – this home is located in one of the city's most prestigious areas, close to supermarkets, pharmacies, shops, bars, theatres and the Casino of Madeira. Adjacent to the casino, you'll find the pretty Santa Catarina Park, with its amazing views of the bay of Funchal. Walk into the heart of Funchal in around five minutes, while other attractions, such as the cathedral and marina, are within a ten-minute stroll, too.

Madeira Wine is famous the world over and this cosy home located on a six-acre vineyard on the north of the island brings you closer to this tradition.

It's a wonderfully peaceful location, sitting in between the Laurissilva forest and the agricultural lands of São Vicente. You can appreciate the rural tranquillity from the terrace or in the garden, in which you'll find a stream and several trees that date back a couple of centuries.

The home itself is rather traditional when it comes to design, with terracotta tiling, vintage-style furnishings and a preference for wood surfaces. Saying that, the pastel pink bedroom complete with botanical prints is cuter than we were expecting.

If you want to learn a little more about viticulture — or just try a glass or two of the finished product — the host can arrange for this. When you want to see more of the locale, there are trails and Levada routes that start close to the home. The village of Sao Vicente takes ten minutes to reach in the car, while Praia do Porto do Seixal takes fifteen minutes in case you want a day at the seaside.
