Located only a few minutes from the Clérigos Tower, On The Lookout's rooftop terrace offers a rival view to the Cathedral and downtown architecture. The insides of this home are equally impressive, with a welcoming communal area all dressed in wood. The rustic touches are added in the form of forest animal prints, which adds to the warm ambiance in every room. The terrace is only accessible via the upstairs bedroom, but if that's not too much of an inconvenience, then you're cordially invited to experience the view (and the comfort) for yourself.

Steps from the apartment is the riverfront, where Porto’s famous wine cellars line the banks, and walking the narrow streets of the neighbourhood you’ll find delights like Palacio Bolta three minutes away, and Mercado Ferreira Borges five minutes on foot. The first thing you’ll notice, stepping into the apartment, is the view directly over the Douro River from the wall of big windows in the living room. Wooden shutters add a touch of tradition, and the darkwood dressers and artfully faded Moroccan rugs are in keeping with the building’s history. Hardwood floors lead from the living room, to the compact kitchen in an alcove and through to the bright bedroom where the exposed stone and big sash window motif continues.

Sometimes a home makes such an impression on us that we’re willing to look past a few flaws, simply because the rest is worth it. Ruby Port is one such home. Honestly, the maintenance needs a bit of work, and the terraces need tidying up, but the place is just so special. From the spectacular views of the Douro River to the beautiful azulejo tiles and the stone fireplace, it has a distinct soul and Porto charm that we simply can't get enough of – it feels like the kind of place we could spend a long time in. Whether you're drinking a chilled glass of Porto wine from the spacious terrace, taking a dip in the private pool or even washing up in the shower, you'll be able to appreciate the lovely views over the water. Inside, light pours in through the patio doors, creating a bright and airy living space to relax. Full of cream furnishings and neutral tones, it's a homely apartment too. Step outside of the building and be in the heart of Porto, and yet you'll find the immediate neighbourhood is quiet and friendly. Walk to the Jardins do Palácio de Cristal and Museum Soares dos Reis in under ten minutes. It’s the perfect spot for a drop of the city’s famed port wine at sunset. Inside, the open-plan kitchen, dining and living room has tall traditional windows letting in tons of natural light. Soft greys and pinks set a cool, calm atmosphere. There’s a separate sitting room with a dedicated remote workspace, should you need to catch up on emails. Bedrooms are housed in thick white stone walls typical of Portuguese design, keeping things cool in summer and cosy in the colder months.

Poet's Hideout is an elegant split-level home in the tourist centre of Porto – but one of the things we love most about it is that it's still peaceful and quiet. The host has invested a lot of effort and brainpower to make the original architectural features work with modern furniture, and the end result is stunning. This home is closer to an aparthotel than a characterful private residence, but that does come with its perks, like daily cleaning and breakfast, which are included in your stay.

Set on the elegant Rua das Flores, this gorgeous two-bedroom flat offers you the perfect base to explore central Porto. Located up on the fourth floor, you'll enjoy breathtaking vistas over the neighbourhood rooftops towards Porto's Romanesque cathedral.

Inside, the main open-plan living space offers more than enough space for four to unwind, dine and socialise in comfort. A large corner sofa is set right by the French doors. On warm days, you can open them up to the outside world and let the city atmosphere float in on the breeze. Elsewhere, there's a four-seater dining table and a well-equipped kitchenette.

Both bedrooms are decorated in similarly neutral tones, with ample storage so you can unpack your bags and settle right in. The main bedroom elevates its offering with an en-suite shower room and Juliette balcony that lets in plenty of natural light.

Down at street level, the pedestrianised Rua das Flores is lined with traditional restaurants and independent shops that occupy the ground floor of historic buildings adorned with azulejo tiles and ornate wrought-iron balconies. Not only does it place you right in the heart of action, but you're also close to some of Porto's most majestic sights, including Sé do Porto and the Palácio da Bolsa – both no more than a five-minute walk – and the waterside Cais da Ribeira, a ten-minute stroll away.

This home nearly feels like staying on a boat – what with the large French doors opening directly onto the Douro River. Whether you’re sat on the sofa or enjoying a coffee at the dining table, you’ll have sweeping views of the water and the city. We could spend hours with a book in the armchair, taking in the sea air as the day grows to a peak. But of course, this central location leaves much to be explored. While there’s nothing particularly unique about the design, the open living area is a comfy spot to unwind with a full kitchen for meals at home. The main bedroom leads out to a private balcony which is great for a breath of fresh air, despite the lack of view.

Slip into the narrow cobbled streets and begin your sightseeing adventure. The 12th-century Porto Cathedral is six minutes from your doorstep and the Igreja dos Clérigos with its 75-metre-tall bell tower is reached in less than ten. When it’s time to call it a day, make a beeline for the Vitória viewpoint to watch dusk fall across the city.

Along the charming cobbled streets of Porto’s Baixa neighbourhood sits Rustic Tawny, a small but beautifully curated studio apartment. Boasting pastoral architectural features in combination with minimalist interiors, we were not only impressed with the sleek look but more importantly, the comfort provided. On top of that, you’ll be staying in a fabulous location, especially if you’ve never been to Porto before. You're right by the city centre and close to the most important tourist attractions. Of course, it wouldn't be Porto if wonderful cafes didn't also line the streets.

Rustic Tawny

If you’re visiting Porto as a big group of friends and family, this modern pad covers all the bases. Central location? Check. Modern designs? Check. Balcony? Check. With en-suite bathrooms, getting ready in the morning is a breeze, but please note that the four guests sleeping on the sofa beds will need to share the bathrooms. We love the spacious and sociable kitchen, perfect for family dinners at home. However, with Porto's diverse restaurants on your doorstep, you'll likely prefer to dine out, especially with foodie havens like Rua Santa Catarina and Mercado do Bolhão just a short walk away.

It’s an idyllic spot. 

Inside, the apartment is just as striking. Exposed stone walls and dark wood furniture combine with floor-to-ceiling windows to stunning effect, and everything you need is close to hand. Cook local dishes in the kitchen and dine in together, opening up the balcony doors to merge the indoor and outdoor spaces for cocktail hour. 

When you want to see more of Porto, you’ll find that you’re within easy walking distance of all of the major sights and attractions. You’ll never want to leave this classy and convenient home.

We had a particular soft spot for the individually designed bedrooms and we loved the kitchen’s handy serving hatch.

Amble alongside the Duoro River with an ice cream in hand before watching the world pass by in a charming cafe. In the early evening, we recommend watching the sunset from the nearby Miradouro da Rua das Aldas viewpoint.

With an address on an iconic street, this home is within walking distance of many of Porto’s top attractions. We’re talking about Mercado do Bolhão (five-minutes on foot) and the majestic Clérigos Tower, an eight minute walk away. If you love books, then we’d recommend a browse around Livraria Lello, said to be one of the most beautiful bookstores in the world – it’s well worth the eleven-minute stroll.

Back at this home, take in the views over the city from your private balcony with a glass of rich Port or a cup of coffee. Alternatively, relax on the green mid-century style sofa, next to the potted palm in the light-filled open plan living space. We love that the bedroom opens out onto the balcony too – perfect for breakfast in the morning.
