Delicate and soft, this baby blue apartment has plenty of surprises waiting for you. We're swooning over the features – the coffered ceilings wouldn't be amiss in a royal palace, while the iron on the arched window is intricate and charming. Add in the cushy orange sofa, parquet flooring and decadently tiled bathroom and it's love at first sight. The layout is also unique – technically, it's more of a studio, but a glass wall keeps the bedroom separate from the living space. The kitchen is a little basic, but we don't mind – if anything, it gives you an excuse to sample the many delicious eateries in Porto.  

But the best part, by far, is the excellent location. Palácio da Bolsa is two minutes away, and there are cafes, bars and boutiques aplenty on your doorstep. Pretty much everything is within walking distance – be it markets or museums – so we think a couple or solo traveller will be happy to call this place home. Wander down the famous alleys of Ribeira do Porto (a four-minute walk), grab a cocktail at one of the riverside restaurants or just stroll along the Douro and soak up the magic of Porto.

You'll be able to see the shimmering water from your balcony right on the banks of the Douro River. Just along the quayside, you’ll find Porto’s fabulous wine museum, dedicated to the eponymous drink this city is famous for. Perhaps pick up a bottle or two and take them back to enjoy while you look out from the balcony. In the open kitchen and living room, a glass screen conveniently separates the spaces, creating a division that still allows natural light to flow through. Small porthole windows let in a little extra light and reveal the thick stone foundations of this old building. The decor is decidedly minimalist, with splashes of pop art on the walls. In the bedroom, cooling white walls and a generous queen-size bed guarantee a peaceful rest. A ten-minute walk along the river takes you to the wine bars of Ribeira and the beautiful sights of Porto’s UNESCO-protected historic centre.

Cute and colourful, this apartment in the Sé neighbourhood offers a privileged position from which to explore the city. The Church of Saint Ildefonso is just a five-minute walk away, and the Mercado do Bolhão, the Livraria Lello bookshop and Porto Cathedral are all reachable on foot as well. There’s not much storage space in this studio-style pad, so you’ll want to pack light. But a generously sized kitchen offers flexibility with mealtimes when you’re not sampling the many local restaurants. And the large French windows are perfect for perching by with a glass of Port each evening.

As you’d expect with a studio, space is limited here but it’s comfortable for a couple or solo traveller. Situated on vibrant Rua das Flores, the city’s main squares and landmarks are mere steps away and for trips further afield, the São Bento metro is within easy reach.

Situated in the charming Ribeiro neighbourhood, a three-minute walk from the neoclassical Palácio da Bolsa and within touching distance of old-school restaurants serving traditional Portuguese fare, this modern and bright apartment is a great base for exploring all that Porto has to offer.

We loved the light-filled living space, with its huge floor-to-ceiling windows and double-height ceilings. A dining table takes centre stage, encouraging lively breakfasts in the morning and hearty suppers in the evening. There’s also a cosy mezzanine level that is the perfect spot for reclining with a glass of wine before retreating to sumptuous bedrooms for an early night. 

Slip into the narrow cobbled streets and begin your sightseeing adventure. The 12th-century Porto Cathedral is six minutes from your doorstep and the Igreja dos Clérigos with its 75-metre-tall bell tower is reached in less than ten. When it’s time to call it a day, make a beeline for the Vitória viewpoint to watch dusk fall across the city.

If you love books, then we’d recommend a browse around Livraria Lello, said to be one of the most beautiful bookstores in the world – it’s well worth the eleven-minute stroll.

Back at this home, take in the views over the city from your private balcony with a glass of rich Port or a cup of coffee. Alternatively, relax on the green mid-century style sofa, next to the potted palm in the light-filled open plan living space. We love that the bedroom opens out onto the balcony too – perfect for breakfast in the morning.

Calling all oenophiles. This Porto apartment is situated in the city's historic wine quarter. You'll be a stone's throw from the underground cellars and local restaurants that characterise this neighbourhood and just a quick metro ride from landmarks like the Clérigos Tower and the Ribeira. The building is over 100 years old – it certainly doesn't lack charm. We adore the hand-painted blue tiles on the exterior, while inside, neoclassical windows flood the living space with sunlight and quaint Juliet balconies offer views towards the centre. It's not the largest pad and the kitchen is pretty compact, but with a desk for remote working and two cosy bedrooms, we think it'll do nicely for a Porto getaway.

Light sleepers may want to pack earplugs. You're right by Ribeira, with the waterfront's restaurants, bars and cafes just a short walk away. There's limited living space and the kitchen is only suitable for preparing light bites, but it's a good pick for solo travellers or couples. You'll notice the colourful decor that creates a welcoming home, while the exposed stone is a nice touch. Open up the shutters and invite the sounds of Porto into the apartment, as you relax after a busy day of sightseeing.

They say good things come in small packages and this practical apartment lives up to the saying. As central as Porto bases get, you’ll be close to a host of cultural and historic must-sees, including Clérigos Tower, Porto Cathedral and the bustling Cais da Ribeira district. We love the views over the River Douro and Porto from this home's terrace. You can enjoy the vistas from inside too, where you'll also find stylish interiors with wooden floors, whitewashed beams and a log burner. This home is situated right in the hub of the Port industry. There are plenty of wine cellars offering tours and tastings, such as Fonseca Port Wine Cellars and Caves Cálem within a short walk. For a bird's eye view of the city, head to the nearby Gaia Cable Car, or the stunning Porto Cathedral is a quick drive away.

Calling all foodies – this charming flat in Bolhão is just steps away from some of Porto's most delicious restaurants and cafes. Situated in Praça dos Poveiros, this is the local's go-to gathering place for good food, free-flowing drinks and laughter-packed conversations. There's no shortage of spots here to wine and dine the night away, but that's not the only reason we love this location. You're close to almost everything – stroll three minutes and visit the blue-tiled Igreja de Santo Ildefonso, wander ten to reach Avenida dos Aliados or head down to the riverfront and walk along the Ribeira, thirteen minutes away.

The apartment itself is as cosy as can be. We're swooning over the period features – traditional shuttered windows, high ceilings and crown moulding are just a few of our favourite details. A quaint Juliet balcony overlooks the hustle and bustle below – the perfect spot for a morning coffee – while the comfy sofa beckons after a long day on your feet. If you need to work from home, you can even set up shop at the dining table as the sunlight streams into the living area. While we wouldn't suggest rustling up a feast in the kitchen, it's perfectly suited to lighter bites – and besides, with so many mouth-watering eateries on your doorstep, we doubt you'll get up to much cooking.

The streets around this place are packed with restaurants and bars, yet the living room faces an internal courtyard for a bit of peace. While there’s nothing particularly unique about the design, the open living area is a comfy spot to unwind with a full kitchen for meals at home. The main bedroom leads out to a private balcony which is great for a breath of fresh air, despite the lack of view.

Sometimes a home makes such an impression on us that we’re willing to look past a few flaws, simply because the rest is worth it. Ruby Port is one such home. Honestly, the maintenance needs a bit of work, and the terraces need tidying up, but the place is just so special. From the spectacular views of the Douro River to the beautiful azulejo tiles and the stone fireplace, it has a distinct soul and Porto charm that we simply can't get enough of – it feels like the kind of place we could spend a long time in. Whether you're drinking a chilled glass of Porto wine from the spacious terrace, taking a dip in the private pool or even washing up in the shower, you'll be able to appreciate the lovely views over the water. Inside, light pours in through the patio doors, creating a bright and airy living space to relax. Full of cream furnishings and neutral tones, it's a homely apartment too. Step outside of the building and be in the heart of Porto, and yet you'll find the immediate neighbourhood is quiet and friendly. Walk to the Jardins do Palácio de Cristal and Museum Soares dos Reis in under ten minutes.
