This place caught our eye for its waterfront location. Situated on the banks of the Douro River in Porto, Portugal’s second biggest city, you’re perfectly placed to enjoy relaxing walks along the riverside. The surrounding area is steeped in history with narrow, cobbled streets, merchants’ houses and iconic bridges, and the city centre is just 2km away. You’ll have access to a shared swimming pool that’s open all year round, as well as a shared garden and a restaurant. Most of the apartments offer river views but as your host operates several apartments here, the exact view may differ from the photos.

Sometimes a home makes such an impression on us that we’re willing to look past a few flaws, simply because the rest is worth it. Ruby Port is one such home. Honestly, the maintenance needs a bit of work, and the terraces need tidying up, but the place is just so special. From the spectacular views of the Douro River to the beautiful azulejo tiles and the stone fireplace, it has a distinct soul and Porto charm that we simply can't get enough of – it feels like the kind of place we could spend a long time in. Whether you're drinking a chilled glass of Porto wine from the spacious terrace, taking a dip in the private pool or even washing up in the shower, you'll be able to appreciate the lovely views over the water. Inside, light pours in through the patio doors, creating a bright and airy living space to relax. Full of cream furnishings and neutral tones, it's a homely apartment too. Step outside of the building and be in the heart of Porto, and yet you'll find the immediate neighbourhood is quiet and friendly. Walk to the Jardins do Palácio de Cristal and Museum Soares dos Reis in under ten minutes. Come evening, there's a dazzling array of family-run eateries and hidden bars to discover, just wander down the charming backstreets and see for yourself.

Make yourself at home in this stunning top-floor apartment situated in the heart of Porto. The first thing you'll notice is that your hosts have taken great care to preserve the original nineteenth-century features of this home while adding sophistication and style into the mix. Alongside stone walls, exposed timber frames and original wood flooring, you'll encounter bold printed wallpaper, mid-century furniture and plenty of gold accents to add a touch of luxury.

With its elevated top-floor position and sky-high vaulted ceiling, every corner of this city-centre flat is illuminated by natural light – a real rarity in these older buildings. We loved the covered balcony, where we could imagine nothing better than sitting in the wicker throne, a glass of local wine in hand, as the sound of live music drifts up from the streets below. Despite the central location, the apartment is calm and tranquil, making it perfect for families with children – especially when you add the second bunk room into the mix.

Down at street level, the neighbourhood has everything you could need, including traditional restaurants, cool cafes and well-stocked supermarkets. Meanwhile, Porto's main sights are within easy walking distance, with the riverfront promenade at Cais da Ribeira and the Neoclassical Palácio da Bolsa both a twenty-minute walk away.


Lofty Expectations

Found in one of the oldest residential buildings in Porto, this apartment might not look 200 years old thanks to modernisation, but it remains historic. Now updated to house families itching to explore this UNESCO World Heritage City, it's comfortable – though the two bedrooms with the sloped ceilings might be better for kids – and bright with a fantastic location. Walk to Porto Cathedral and other landmarks in minutes, buy fresh produce from the Bolhão market only a short stroll away, and hop on the trams to find points of interest further afield. 

A Little Piece of Porto

Location doesn’t get much better than this in Porto – on a charming shopping street just a couple of streets away from Sao Bento train station. It’s the ideal position to explore the city on foot, with the ancient azulejo-tiled churches and baroque towers punctuating orange-roofed buildings. On your doorstep, you’ve got family-run restaurants, charming coffee shops and bakeries serving oven-fresh custard tarts. Plus, the famous wine warehouses that line the Douro at Ribeira are just a short stroll away.

This studio apartment is a stylish spot to return to after a day exploring downtown Porto. Modern, monochrome artworks sit against striking bottle-green walls, but the first thing that caught our attention was the wall of stone-framed windows, looking out over the tiled buildings of your typical Porto street. Throwing these open, you can listen to the chatter from the street waking up in the morning while dozing in the comfy bed before settling in at plush velvet chairs for a classic breakfast of custard tarts and coffee.

With an address on an iconic street, this home is within walking distance of many of Porto’s top attractions. We’re talking about Mercado do Bolhão (five-minutes on foot) and the majestic Clérigos Tower, an eight minute walk away. If you love books, then we’d recommend a browse around Livraria Lello, said to be one of the most beautiful bookstores in the world – it’s well worth the eleven-minute stroll.

Back at this home, take in the views over the city from your private balcony with a glass of rich Port or a cup of coffee. Alternatively, relax on the green mid-century style sofa, next to the potted palm in the light-filled open plan living space. We love that the bedroom opens out onto the balcony too – perfect for breakfast in the morning.


A Strawberry Moon

Surrounded by restaurants, cafes and some of Porto's most iconic sights, this apartment is one of eight conversions of former workers' houses. Now, it's a charming spot for couples and solo travellers itching to be in the heart of this vibrant city. Porto Cathedral, Lapa Church, and the Douro River are all reachable on foot or from the tram stop only minutes away. This place does lack character inside, and the bedroom is in a mezzanine, which may not suit taller guests. That said, though you share the patio with neighbours on either side of you, the little bistro table still makes for a nice breakfast spot every morning.

We love the views over the River Douro and Porto from this home's terrace. You can enjoy the vistas from inside too, where you'll also find stylish interiors with wooden floors, whitewashed beams and a log burner. This home is situated right in the hub of the Port industry. There are plenty of wine cellars offering tours and tastings, such as Fonseca Port Wine Cellars and Caves Cálem within a short walk. For a bird's eye view of the city, head to the nearby Gaia Cable Car, or the stunning Porto Cathedral is a quick drive away. 

Just Around the Riverbend

This home is located on the Rua Galeria de Paris, a street famous for its nightlife and lively spirit. It's a simple yet elegant apartment, with clean lines, crisp white walls and modern furniture. But the best feature, we're sure you'll agree, has to be the roof terrace. You could spend hours up here, from your morning coffee to a final sundowner, looking out over the historic buildings of Porto's old town. 

You're well-positioned to visit many of the top sights in the city, with Clérigos Tower and Aliados Avenue a five-minute walk away, and the Livraria Lello Bookstore just around the corner – rumour has it this literary wonderland inspired the Hogwarts library. Your host can even organise food tours on request, showing you the very best of the city's gastronomic scene. And, when night falls, you only need to step outside to find yourself right in the epicentre of Porto's fabulous nightlife. 

Right in the Heart

Style and practicality go hand-in-hand at this Lapa district apartment designed by the famed architect Siza Vieira. Each bedroom is as light-filled as the next, thanks to those floor-to-ceiling Juliet balcony windows, and there’s a twin bedroom tailor-made for little ones. It’s worth noting the Metro overground runs close to this home – handy for getting about the city, but the passing trains may take some getting used to. But for a home this central, that’s all par of the course.

Vieira's Place

This bright and welcoming apartment makes for an excellent base in Porto. It was only finished in 2022 so it’s new and fresh, with crisp white walls and stylish decor. It’s ideal for a couple looking for a modern home in Porto. 

You’ll love standing on the balcony each morning, soaking up the sun as you sip your coffee. Prepare a quick breakfast in the petite open-plan kitchen before heading out to see the sights. This home is centrally located, so you’ll be able to easily explore on foot and by using the metro. You’re within easy walking distance of Casa da Música, ideal if you’re planning on catching a show during your stay. 


Sipping Port

Situated right where the River Douro meets the Atlantic Ocean, this stylish apartment offers spectacular views and plenty of living space. Two balconies grant you the opportunity to relax in the sun – the one off the main bedroom is perfect for morning cups of coffee, while the downstairs balcony is ideal for cocktails as the evening draws to a close. Floor-to-ceiling windows show off the scenery all day long, a sleek kitchen makes rustling up meals a breeze and a cosy sofa is a perfect spot to kick back and relax after a busy day exploring. Our favourite room is the main bedroom. As well as the private balcony, it has all the bells and whistles you'd want – blackout blinds, built-in Bluetooth speakers and a lavish rainfall shower in the en-suite. 

When you're ready to explore, both the 1 and 18 trams run right past the home, so you'll have no problem getting to and from Porto's bustling city centre. That said, Foz do Douro isn't lacking in activities, either. Sprawl out on the miles of sandy beaches (Praia das Pastoras is a fifteen-minute walk away), grab dinner and drinks at one of the waterfront restaurants or just stroll along the river, admiring the many landmarks, lighthouses and sculptures representing Portugal's rich history.

Still River

Cheery yellow accents, a well-considered layout and an ideal location combine to create this inviting apartment in the heart of Porto’s Sé neighbourhood. After a restful sleep in the unfussy bedroom, sit down to a typical Portuguese breakfast in the open-plan living space. When the plates are cleared, curl up on the sofa with an espresso or head out and explore your surroundings. 

The Church of Saint Ildefonso, famous for its blue and white tiled facade, is just a five-minute walk from your building. Head west for the Lello bookshop – the most beautiful of its kind – then mosey down to the riverside for a glass of something chilled in a laid-back cafe. When it’s time for something to eat, settle on a traditional restaurant in the Ribeira district.

Located in the historic Miragaia, this is a wonderful place to experience the rich culture and tradition of the city. And there’s everything you could need here for a fulfilling stay. From preparing your morning coffee in the kitchen to relaxing in the bedroom, there’s a sense of ease and flow throughout this home. 

Follow the city buzz onto the cobbled streets of Miragaia. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is lined with beautiful townhouses and small eateries serving classic Portuguese dishes. It also offers wonderful views of the Douro River. Make your way down to the water’s edge for a boat trip or take the tram to Foz do Duoro for a day at the beach.

The sociable open-plan layout invites chefs of the group to whip up feasts in the kitchen while chatting with others around the dining table or unwinding on the sofa. 

When you’re ready to venture out for some sightseeing, make a beeline for the Church of Saint Ildefonso or the Livraria Lello bookshop nearby, before sauntering a little further on to the Porto Cathedral and the bustling city centre. With countless bars, restaurants and shops along the riverfront, head to the Cais da Ribeira as evening draws in and you’ll get a true taste of the city here.

Situated in the charming Ribeiro neighbourhood, a three-minute walk from the neoclassical Palácio da Bolsa and within touching distance of old-school restaurants serving traditional Portuguese fare, this modern and bright apartment is a great base for exploring all that Porto has to offer.

We loved the light-filled living space, with its huge floor-to-ceiling windows and double-height ceilings. A dining table takes centre stage, encouraging lively breakfasts in the morning and hearty suppers in the evening. There’s also a cosy mezzanine level that is the perfect spot for reclining with a glass of wine before retreating to sumptuous bedrooms for an early night. 

Slip into the narrow cobbled streets and begin your sightseeing adventure. The 12th-century Porto Cathedral is six minutes from your doorstep and the Igreja dos Clérigos with its 75-metre-tall bell tower is reached in less than ten. When it’s time to call it a day, make a beeline for the Vitória viewpoint to watch dusk fall across the city.

With stunning Douro River views, the equal of those from the nearby Miradouro da Vitória, this historic building offers up the perfect Porto apartment for your time in the city. 

Come for the top-floor views and stay for the stylish mid-century interior. Why not read a book in the Eames chair beneath the awe-inspiring domed skylight, admire the minimalist artwork casually propped up against the wall, or relax in the elegant living area seating?

Elsewhere, you'll find four bedrooms, two of which stand out for their en-suite bathrooms and direct balcony access. The outdoor space, in particular, makes for a welcome private area when you want some time to yourself. 

When you're not living it up in your scenic sitting room, head out into the streets and discover the historic sights within a stone's throw of your flat. Check out the impressive Palacio da Bolsa on the Unesco-listed Infante D. Henrique Square, five minutes on foot, marvel at Porto's magnificent cathedral, a ten-minute stroll, and use the Gustave Eiffel-designed Luís I Bridge to cross the River Douro, a twelve-minute meander from your front door.

Douro Dreaming

Cedofeita is slightly off the beaten track, but still a part of Porto's busy city centre. After you pass the neighbourhood's cosy cafes and art galleries, you'll quickly get to the riverside and other central sights. Fernando & Amalia is a simple, immaculate home with ample natural light and high-quality furniture. The building faces a busy street, which is great if you want to grab a taxi – but the communal areas are a little noisy with the windows open. We did, however, like the Porto-inspired art prints in the living room.

With a fabulous address in downtown Porto, right in the heart of the city, you’ll find this apartment is near a load of attractions. Points of interest include the Mercado do Bolhão and the Tower and Church of Clérigos, as well as several parks.

Back at this home, sit in the sun on the private balcony with a glass of Port or a drink of your choice and take in the views over Porto. You can see the two spires of the Church of Our Lady of Lapa just above the rooftops from here. Or head inside and read a book on the custard yellow sofa in the light-filled living space. Later get ready in the marble-style bathroom for an evening out at one of the traditional restaurants in the neighbourhood.

Between two beautiful parks – Jardim da Cordoaria and Jardim das Virtudes – and set in a pretty period building, this studio home is quite the little charmer. With high ceilings and stripped-back woodwork to its trio of Juliet balcony windows, it's full of character, and its recent refurbishment has added a big helping of modern styling and clever design. 

There's a bespoke kitchen packed with everything you'll need for cooking at home, along with a comfy sofa, a little dining area and even a desk. And while this is a studio, the addition of a sleeping platform up a few steps divides the space neatly – creating storage beneath. Step out of bed and straight into your in-room rainfall shower, before making a cup of coffee and opening up the shutters to gaze across at the park.

With wine bars and cafes on your street, you won't have to go far for a true taste of Porto, and the riverside is just a ten-minute walk.

There are several quirky touches to admire, from the geometric patterns on the armchairs to the intriguing prints on the walls. And, on sunny mornings, you'll love sipping your morning coffee outside on the balcony as you plan your itinerary for the day to come. 

Wander down to the riverside and admire the bridges the city is famous for, or take a boat trip for a new perspective on the city. A ten-minute walk will bring you into the old town, where you can enjoy a tasting in one of the port bars. Porto is a city perhaps best known for the fortified wine that borrows its name, so it only feels appropriate that this large apartment in the downtown area of the city feels like it has been designed for gathering people together. 

The space revolves around an open kitchen-dining area that looks like the trendiest restaurant in town. Here, guests can get stuck in and whip up tasty dishes, or alternatively watch the action from a seat at the large island. If you’d prefer to leave the cooking to the professionals, there's the option of hiring a private chef at this address who can take care of mealtimes. Once dinner is piping hot and ready to serve, there's a huge dining table to seat the whole party and spend long evenings around. 

If you ever fancy a breath of fresh air at any point, there's a balcony with a pleasant view of the street below. Outside, Bolhão market is only a five-minute walk away when you want to pick up some fresh, local ingredients, while Bolsa Palace can be reached in just over fifteen if you're in the mood for some culture. Should you want to sample the city’s gastronomic scene, there is no shortage of restaurants on the doorstep. Inside the home, it’s simple yet well-appointed and quiet – thanks to the soundproof windows. Each bedroom is comfortable, and though the third does lack some homely touches, it’s still a pleasant enough space to get some shut-eye at the end of a busy day.

Timeless Porto

We had to break from doing some serious shopping to tell you about this Porto gem. This elegant apartment, housed in a recently renovated 20th-century building, is located right in the heart of the pedestrianised retail hub of Rua Santa Catarina. For fresh produce and a vibrant atmosphere, head to Mercado do Bolhão, a three-minute walk away. It's not all about shopping, though – the Chapel of Souls is a two-minute walk away, where you'll discover its beautiful azulejo tiled façade. Or take a break in the Café Majestic, a beautiful Art Nouveau café, a five-minute walk from this home. A little further, Porto Cathedral is fourteen minutes on foot. Then stop off at the small port wine shop opposite this home and take some back to this apartment.

Inside, there are furnishings from Portuguese designers and artists. Lots of large windows allow light to flood in. We adore the spacious open plan living space with its two French doors, which open onto a small balustraded balcony overlooking the street. Off the bedroom, there's a secluded terrace too, perfect for a coffee or glass of Port. Later, chill out on the mezzanine level or have a game of chess. There's plenty of room for a family or friends to spread out here. If you prefer to eat in, whip up a bacalhau à Gomes (cod casserole) in the modern kitchen and enjoy it at your dining table. Honestly, though, you probably won't be spending that much time indoors with so much on your doorstep.

Whilst the apartment is housed in a building dating from the 18th century, it’s been completely renovated inside. One thing to note, though, at full capacity, two people will be on a sofa bed in the living space. Situated in one of Porto’s picturesque districts, Ribeira – this apartment boasts an enviable location too. You’ll find a maze of cobbled medieval alleys, cosy bars, and eateries serving traditional cuisine. Attractions nearby include the iconic D. Luís Bridge and the beautiful Bolsa Palace.
