This place caught our eye for its waterfront location. Situated on the banks of the Douro River in Porto, Portugal’s second biggest city, you’re perfectly placed to enjoy relaxing walks along the riverside. The surrounding area is steeped in history with narrow, cobbled streets, merchants’ houses and iconic bridges, and the city centre is just 2km away. You’ll have access to a shared swimming pool that’s open all year round, as well as a shared garden and a restaurant. Most of the apartments offer river views but as your host operates several apartments here, the exact view may differ from the photos.

It’s the perfect spot for a drop of the city’s famed port wine at sunset. Inside, the open-plan kitchen, dining and living room has tall traditional windows letting in tons of natural light. Ribeira is one of Porto’s most charming and typical neighbourhoods, and this apartment blends right in. Steps from the apartment is the riverfront, where Porto’s famous wine cellars line the banks, and walking the narrow streets of the neighbourhood you’ll find delights like Palacio Bolta three minutes away, and Mercado Ferreira Borges five minutes on foot. The first thing you’ll notice, stepping into the apartment, is the view directly over the Douro River from the wall of big windows in the living room. Wooden shutters add a touch of tradition, and the darkwood dressers and artfully faded Moroccan rugs are in keeping with the building’s history. Hardwood floors lead from the living room, to the compact kitchen in an alcove and through to the bright bedroom where the exposed stone and big sash window motif continues.

Honestly, the maintenance needs a bit of work, and the terraces need tidying up, but the place is just so special. From the spectacular views of the Douro River to the beautiful azulejo tiles and the stone fireplace, it has a distinct soul and Porto charm that we simply can't get enough of – it feels like the kind of place we could spend a long time in. Whether you're drinking a chilled glass of Porto wine from the spacious terrace, taking a dip in the private pool or even washing up in the shower, you'll be able to appreciate the lovely views over the water. Inside, light pours in through the patio doors, creating a bright and airy living space to relax. Full of cream furnishings and neutral tones, it's a homely apartment too. Step outside of the building and be in the heart of Porto, and yet you'll find the immediate neighbourhood is quiet and friendly. Walk to the Jardins do Palácio de Cristal and Museum Soares dos Reis in under ten minutes. Come evening, there's a dazzling array of family-run eateries and hidden bars to discover, just wander down the charming backstreets and see for yourself.

If you love books, then we’d recommend a browse around Livraria Lello, said to be one of the most beautiful bookstores in the world – it’s well worth the eleven-minute stroll.

Back at this home, take in the views over the city from your private balcony with a glass of rich Port or a cup of coffee. Alternatively, relax on the green mid-century style sofa, next to the potted palm in the light-filled open plan living space. We love that the bedroom opens out onto the balcony too – perfect for breakfast in the morning.


A Strawberry Moon

A haven of calm in Portugal's bustling riverside city, this chic one-bed apartment will set you up for a memorable stay. The recently-refurbished interiors are strikingly stylish, from the punchy tiled bathroom to the moulded walls and ceiling. The recurrent use of teal infuses the home with a sense of serenity.

Sliding glass doors lead to the elegant sleeping space, a colourful yet restful enclave that could easily be mistaken for a boutique hotel room. The historic Sé Cathedral is just ten minutes away, an impressive demonstration of Romanesque architecture. From here, you're within easy reach of the widely-photographed São Bento station – its hand-painted tiling makes it one of the most beautiful railway stations in the world. Come evening, walk the five minutes from your apartment to Cais da Ribeira, a busy piazza with plentiful restaurants and bars to sample this city's world-famous port at.

This home nearly feels like staying on a boat – what with the large French doors opening directly onto the Douro River. Whether you’re sat on the sofa or enjoying a coffee at the dining table, you’ll have sweeping views of the water and the city. The windows’ second benefit is the sheer amount of light the living space gets, bathing the tasteful furniture in the warm sun. We could spend hours with a book in the armchair, taking in the sea air as the day grows to a peak. But of course, this central location leaves much to be explored. You can wander along the riverfront’s picturesque fishing neighbourhoods, hopping on the 1930s tram that runs to Foz. Or, board on a boat that will take you to the famous terraced Douro vineyards to sample Vinho Verde and Port. You’ll be walking distance from beautiful historic buildings, located in one of the quietest streets of Ribeira, and only a thirteen-minute walk from São Bento Railway Station – which will connect you all over the city.

We had to break from doing some serious shopping to tell you about this Porto gem. This elegant apartment, housed in a recently renovated 20th-century building, is located right in the heart of the pedestrianised retail hub of Rua Santa Catarina. For fresh produce and a vibrant atmosphere, head to Mercado do Bolhão, a three-minute walk away. It's not all about shopping, though – the Chapel of Souls is a two-minute walk away, where you'll discover its beautiful azulejo tiled façade. Or take a break in the Café Majestic, a beautiful Art Nouveau café, a five-minute walk from this home. A little further, Porto Cathedral is fourteen minutes on foot. Then stop off at the small port wine shop opposite this home and take some back to this apartment.

Inside, there are furnishings from Portuguese designers and artists. Lots of large windows allow light to flood in. We adore the spacious open plan living space with its two French doors, which open onto a small balustraded balcony overlooking the street. Off the bedroom, there's a secluded terrace too, perfect for a coffee or glass of Port. Later, chill out on the mezzanine level or have a game of chess. There's plenty of room for a family or friends to spread out here. If you prefer to eat in, whip up a bacalhau à Gomes (cod casserole) in the modern kitchen and enjoy it at your dining table. Honestly, though, you probably won't be spending that much time indoors with so much on your doorstep.

Step inside, and you'll find a tranquil space with plenty of contemporary style. The open-plan kitchen and living space are ideal for socialising – you'll love whipping up a feast to share together at the long dining table. Afterwards, you can all settle down on the comfy sofas to sip a couple of glasses of locally-made port and make some plans for the following day. 

A fifteen-minute walk will bring you to the famous Livraria Lello, a haven for book lovers. Architecture fans can visit the city's famous churches, Igreja dos Clérigos and Igreja de Santo Ildefonso, also fifteen minutes away on foot. And, when you need to refuel, you're spoilt for choice with a range of nearby restaurants and port houses where you can eat and drink delicious local delicacies.

Make sure you sample the restaurant scene in the area during your stay. Seafood is the speciality here, and you can enjoy your mussels or cod knowing they've been freshly plucked from the sea earlier that same day. There are plenty of shops and supermarkets nearby, too, if you prefer to do the cooking yourself.

Matosinhos Abode

Situated right where the River Douro meets the Atlantic Ocean, this stylish apartment offers spectacular views and plenty of living space. Two balconies grant you the opportunity to relax in the sun – the one off the main bedroom is perfect for morning cups of coffee, while the downstairs balcony is ideal for cocktails as the evening draws to a close. Floor-to-ceiling windows show off the scenery all day long, a sleek kitchen makes rustling up meals a breeze and a cosy sofa is a perfect spot to kick back and relax after a busy day exploring. Our favourite room is the main bedroom. As well as the private balcony, it has all the bells and whistles you'd want – blackout blinds, built-in Bluetooth speakers and a lavish rainfall shower in the en-suite. 

When you're ready to explore, both the 1 and 18 trams run right past the home, so you'll have no problem getting to and from Porto's bustling city centre. That said, Foz do Douro isn't lacking in activities, either. Sprawl out on the miles of sandy beaches (Praia das Pastoras is a fifteen-minute walk away), grab dinner and drinks at one of the waterfront restaurants or just stroll along the river, admiring the many landmarks, lighthouses and sculptures representing Portugal's rich history.

The Bolhão market is a must-visit – a bustling local hub full of wonderfully fresh produce and regional specialities – the perfect place to pick up your ingredients for a special dinner in your elegant dining room. Though of course, if you’re not in the mood to cook, you'll also be spoilt for choice when it comes to the selection of restaurants serving up authentic dishes. Sample some local stews, then head to Rem Koolhaas’ Casa da Música for a memorable night of entertainment.

A Bolhão Breeze

Set on the elegant Rua das Flores, this gorgeous two-bedroom flat offers you the perfect base to explore central Porto. Located up on the fourth floor, you'll enjoy breathtaking vistas over the neighbourhood rooftops towards Porto's Romanesque cathedral.

Inside, the main open-plan living space offers more than enough space for four to unwind, dine and socialise in comfort. A large corner sofa is set right by the French doors. On warm days, you can open them up to the outside world and let the city atmosphere float in on the breeze. Elsewhere, there's a four-seater dining table and a well-equipped kitchenette.

Both bedrooms are decorated in similarly neutral tones, with ample storage so you can unpack your bags and settle right in. The main bedroom elevates its offering with an en-suite shower room and Juliette balcony that lets in plenty of natural light.

Down at street level, the pedestrianised Rua das Flores is lined with traditional restaurants and independent shops that occupy the ground floor of historic buildings adorned with azulejo tiles and ornate wrought-iron balconies. Not only does it place you right in the heart of action, but you're also close to some of Porto's most majestic sights, including Sé do Porto and the Palácio da Bolsa – both no more than a five-minute walk – and the waterside Cais da Ribeira, a ten-minute stroll away.


Empire of the Sun

Found in one of the oldest residential buildings in Porto, this apartment might not look 200 years old thanks to modernisation, but it remains historic. Now updated to house families itching to explore this UNESCO World Heritage City, it's comfortable – though the two bedrooms with the sloped ceilings might be better for kids – and bright with a fantastic location. Walk to Porto Cathedral and other landmarks in minutes, buy fresh produce from the Bolhão market only a short stroll away, and hop on the trams to find points of interest further afield. 

A Little Piece of Porto

A functional studio flat in central Porto, this home is a comfortable place to lay weary heads after several glasses of port. Although the kitchenette isn't suited for extravagant meals, you'll find everything you need for light bites – combined with the washing machine, the home is ideal for extended stays. On the streets below, you'll find a host of eateries right on your doorstep, along with a plethora of museums and the like.

From its enviable position in the centre of Porto, this stylish yet functional apartment is an excellent choice for families and groups of friends alike. The open-plan living space is perfectly proportioned, with enough room for entertaining your loved ones or enjoying a quiet moment with a cup of coffee. We had a particular soft spot for the individually designed bedrooms and we loved the kitchen’s handy serving hatch.

When you’re ready to explore your surroundings. Begin with a trip to Porto Cathedral, just a short walk from your building. Or why not head down to the water? Amble alongside the Duoro River with an ice cream in hand before watching the world pass by in a charming cafe. In the early evening, we recommend watching the sunset from the nearby Miradouro da Rua das Aldas viewpoint. 

Peach & Emerald

Situated in the heart of Downtown Porto, this apartment places you within easy walking distance of the city's top highlights. Visit the Church of Saint Ildefonso, sample local produce at the Mercado do Bolhão, or head to the Douro River for a boat trip. Inside, it's a smart, functional space for your group to spread out, and there's a sofa bed for a fifth guest. The kitchen is compact yet fully equipped for home-cooked dinners, while the enclosed balcony is a nice place to toast the day's end. Just note that you'll need to climb stairs to reach the entrance of this home.

We love the views over the River Douro and Porto from this home's terrace. You can enjoy the vistas from inside too, where you'll also find stylish interiors with wooden floors, whitewashed beams and a log burner. This home is situated right in the hub of the Port industry. There are plenty of wine cellars offering tours and tastings, such as Fonseca Port Wine Cellars and Caves Cálem within a short walk. For a bird's eye view of the city, head to the nearby Gaia Cable Car, or the stunning Porto Cathedral is a quick drive away. 

Just Around the Riverbend

Relax on your private, spacious balcony with a glass of Port when you stay at this stylish home in Porto. We love the garden views from here. Inside, lots of glazing allows light to flood in. The chic living space has warm wooden floors and mid-century style furniture. Rustle up a Porto staple, the substantial francesinha sandwich in the modern kitchen. Or there are plenty of restaurants and cafes on your doorstep if you don't fancy cooking. 

There are many attractions nearby too. Head to Livraria Lello, one of the world's most beautiful bookstores, under a fifteen-minute stroll away. Porto Cathedral and Bolhão Market are both a twenty-five-minute walk. Or, lovers of sculpture can visit the Soares dos Reis National Museum, eight minutes on foot.

This minimalist apartment is great for small groups seeking a comfortable base in one of Porto's hotspots. The small kitchenette is ideal for grab-and-go breakfasts before heading out, and though you'll have to manage two flights of stairs to reach the front door, complimentary essentials await inside to help start your holiday. It's worth noting that one of the bedrooms doesn't have any windows. But, with São Bento metro station a quick stroll away, sightseeing across the city is easy.

Porto Beat

Style and practicality go hand-in-hand at this Lapa district apartment designed by the famed architect Siza Vieira. Each bedroom is as light-filled as the next, thanks to those floor-to-ceiling Juliet balcony windows, and there’s a twin bedroom tailor-made for little ones. It’s worth noting the Metro overground runs close to this home – handy for getting about the city, but the passing trains may take some getting used to. But for a home this central, that’s all par of the course.
