Make yourself at home in this stunning top-floor apartment situated in the heart of Porto. The first thing you'll notice is that your hosts have taken great care to preserve the original nineteenth-century features of this home while adding sophistication and style into the mix. Alongside stone walls, exposed timber frames and original wood flooring, you'll encounter bold printed wallpaper, mid-century furniture and plenty of gold accents to add a touch of luxury.

With its elevated top-floor position and sky-high vaulted ceiling, every corner of this city-centre flat is illuminated by natural light – a real rarity in these older buildings. We loved the covered balcony, where we could imagine nothing better than sitting in the wicker throne, a glass of local wine in hand, as the sound of live music drifts up from the streets below. Despite the central location, the apartment is calm and tranquil, making it perfect for families with children – especially when you add the second bunk room into the mix.

Down at street level, the neighbourhood has everything you could need, including traditional restaurants, cool cafes and well-stocked supermarkets. Meanwhile, Porto's main sights are within easy walking distance, with the riverfront promenade at Cais da Ribeira and the Neoclassical Palácio da Bolsa both a twenty-minute walk away.


Lofty Expectations

Location doesn’t get much better than this in Porto – on a charming shopping street just a couple of streets away from Sao Bento train station. It’s the ideal position to explore the city on foot, with the ancient azulejo-tiled churches and baroque towers punctuating orange-roofed buildings. On your doorstep, you’ve got family-run restaurants, charming coffee shops and bakeries serving oven-fresh custard tarts. Plus, the famous wine warehouses that line the Douro at Ribeira are just a short stroll away.

This studio apartment is a stylish spot to return to after a day exploring downtown Porto. Modern, monochrome artworks sit against striking bottle-green walls, but the first thing that caught our attention was the wall of stone-framed windows, looking out over the tiled buildings of your typical Porto street. Throwing these open, you can listen to the chatter from the street waking up in the morning while dozing in the comfy bed before settling in at plush velvet chairs for a classic breakfast of custard tarts and coffee. 

Rich Green & Wicker

They say good things come in small packages and this practical apartment lives up to the saying. As central as Porto bases get, you’ll be close to a host of cultural and historic must-sees, including Clérigos Tower, Porto Cathedral and the bustling Cais da Ribeira district. The many nearby restaurants make up for the pocket-sized kitchenette, and while the decor isn’t the most inspiring here, beamed ceilings and a sleek en-suite are nice touches we appreciate. Just be aware you’ll need to climb the stairs up to the entrance – but as another saying goes, all good things require effort. 


Camelot

Located on the iconic Rua do Almada, this apartment in downtown Porto has a great address. It’s within walking distance of many attractions, such as Mercado do Bolhão and the Chapel of Souls, with its azulejo tiled façade. Being in the heart of this UNESCO World Heritage City, expect to hear some street noise during your stay, though. If you’re here on business, there’s a desk in the bedroom (there’s only one bedroom here – guests three and four will be sleeping on a sofa bed in the open-plan living space).

Heart of Porto Retreat

Located on one of Porto’s liveliest streets, this studio apartment is very close to the iconic Ribeira which can be reached on foot within seven minutes. A picturesque part of the city, in the heart of the old town, Ribeira is a riverside spot overlooking the Douro River where you can visit Praça da Ribeira square which is lined with colourful 18th-century townhouses, and visit Bolsa Palace, a neoclassical landmark with ornate interiors which is a short three-minute walk from your door. At dinner time, weave your way through the cobbled streets of Ribeira where you will find plenty of small bars and eateries – to taste classic Portuguese fare such as grilled sardines.

This home is also perfectly situated to explore everything else that Porto has to offer. Porto Cathedral can be reached within five minutes by foot where you can enjoy the sunlight shining in through the stained glass rose window as you explore one of the city’s oldest Romanesque monuments. Clérgios Tower is just a seven-minute walk away, while a chance to admire the blue-tiled exterior of The Church of Souls – painted with scenes of saints – is just a ten-minute walk from your door.

Go shopping at Livraria Lello, often regarded as one of the most beautiful bookshops in the world – just an eight-minute walk away. Or, experience what Porto is best known for – its port wine production – at a wine tasting room just two minutes away from this home on foot. Whatever you’re looking for in Porto, this home is on the doorstep of sights and city exploration.

Down the Ribeira

You’ll find this contemporary home in the historic neighbourhood of Porto. The apartment is bright and breezy and can accommodate up to six guests. While it may not be the roomiest home – it’s certainly a great base for a family or group of friends to explore the city. We particularly love the roof terrace, complete with a seating area with views over the city. Authentic restaurants and bars are just a brief walk away, and you’re not far from Bolhao Market, Santa Catarina Street, Aliados Avenue, and the river either. 


Views Over Porto

A haven of calm in Portugal's bustling riverside city, this chic one-bed apartment will set you up for a memorable stay. The recently-refurbished interiors are strikingly stylish, from the punchy tiled bathroom to the moulded walls and ceiling. The recurrent use of teal infuses the home with a sense of serenity.

Sliding glass doors lead to the elegant sleeping space, a colourful yet restful enclave that could easily be mistaken for a boutique hotel room. Doze away from bustling street noise, then start the morning with a coffee and pastel de nata at the bright dining table. The kitchen is fully-equipped if you fancy a proper breakfast to fuel you for the day ahead.

The historic Sé Cathedral is just ten minutes away, an impressive demonstration of Romanesque architecture. From here, you're within easy reach of the widely-photographed São Bento station – its hand-painted tiling makes it one of the most beautiful railway stations in the world. Come evening, walk the five minutes from your apartment to Cais da Ribeira, a busy piazza with plentiful restaurants and bars to sample this city's world-famous port at. 

Teal Tranquility

Combining original elements with modern upside-down living, this apartment is an ideal base for those couples or families of three looking to experience the enchanting heart of the city. Boasting a long, double-height living area with a wonderfully bright and open layout, you'll find it easy to come back and relax after days of sightseeing in Porto. 

We love the enticing space with oak floors, wood beams, and exposed stone walls which make the design feel reassuringly rustic, and yet the contemporary decor adds plenty of modern comforts. The sociable open-plan layout invites chefs of the group to whip up feasts in the kitchen while chatting with others around the dining table or unwinding on the sofa. 

When you’re ready to venture out for some sightseeing, make a beeline for the Church of Saint Ildefonso or the Livraria Lello bookshop nearby, before sauntering a little further on to the Porto Cathedral and the bustling city centre. With countless bars, restaurants and shops along the riverfront, head to the Cais da Ribeira as evening draws in and you’ll get a true taste of the city here.

Located in the historic Miragaia, this is a wonderful place to experience the rich culture and tradition of the city. And there’s everything you could need here for a fulfilling stay. From preparing your morning coffee in the kitchen to relaxing in the bedroom, there’s a sense of ease and flow throughout this home. 

Follow the city buzz onto the cobbled streets of Miragaia. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is lined with beautiful townhouses and small eateries serving classic Portuguese dishes. It also offers wonderful views of the Douro River. Make your way down to the water’s edge for a boat trip or take the tram to Foz do Duoro for a day at the beach. 

When you're full of fresh sea air and inspiration, this apartment is the perfect place to relax and reflect on the beauty of Porto. 

Sage & Lemon

If you love green spaces, you'll be happy to know that this apartment is close to a number of parks, including Jardim de Teófilo Braga and Jardim de Fradelos, to name just a couple. Also, not far away, you'll find attractions such as the lovely landmark, the Boavista Roundabout, as well as the Baroque Clerigos Church and Tower.

After exploring Porto, relax on the blue velvet sofa in the living room with its homely vibe, wood floors, potted plants and botanical prints. We love the ornate tiles in the white kitchen  – whip up some polvo com molho verde here and enjoy it at your dining table. Then get some rest in the bedroom with its leafy wallpaper before starting another day in this fascinating city.



Blue Urban Fox

Between two beautiful parks – Jardim da Cordoaria and Jardim das Virtudes – and set in a pretty period building, this studio home is quite the little charmer. With high ceilings and stripped-back woodwork to its trio of Juliet balcony windows, it's full of character, and its recent refurbishment has added a big helping of modern styling and clever design. 

There's a bespoke kitchen packed with everything you'll need for cooking at home, along with a comfy sofa, a little dining area and even a desk. And while this is a studio, the addition of a sleeping platform up a few steps divides the space neatly – creating storage beneath. Step out of bed and straight into your in-room rainfall shower, before making a cup of coffee and opening up the shutters to gaze across at the park.

With wine bars and cafes on your street, you won't have to go far for a true taste of Porto, and the riverside is just a ten-minute walk.



The Shuttersmith

With stunning Douro River views, the equal of those from the nearby Miradouro da Vitória, this historic building offers up the perfect Porto apartment for your time in the city. 

Come for the top-floor views and stay for the stylish mid-century interior. Why not read a book in the Eames chair beneath the awe-inspiring domed skylight, admire the minimalist artwork casually propped up against the wall, or relax in the elegant living area seating?

Check out the impressive Palacio da Bolsa on the Unesco-listed Infante D. Henrique Square, five minutes on foot, marvel at Porto's magnificent cathedral, a ten-minute stroll, and use the Gustave Eiffel-designed Luís I Bridge to cross the River Douro, a twelve-minute meander from your front door.
