Sitting close to the point at which Trás-os-Montes crosses over to the famed Alto-Douro wine region, this nine-hectare oak forest was abandoned in the middle of the 20th century and mother nature allowed to run her course. That is until 2010 when the farmhouse hidden away on the site was almost completely reconstructed into this incredible holiday home.

There are a few stone walls and wooden beams that hark back to this history, but otherwise, it's a strikingly modern affair, with a stylish collection of artwork, decorative items and furnishings waiting to be discovered throughout the space. There are so many aspects you're sure to be enamoured by as you take a tour, from the minimalist kitchen to the freestanding tub in the master bathroom.

That's not to forget the fabulous amenities here, either. If you're after a dose of relaxation, you're in luck – not only is there an indoor swimming pool, there's a sauna and Jacuzzi to retire to afterwards. There's also a fair bit of outside space for making the most of sunny weather, including a terrace with seating.

Plus, there's a whole range of distractions that lie nearby, too. Parque Natural do Alvão is a short drive away if you're ever in the mood for long rambles through scenic Portuguese countryside, while there are a number of towns close by – Vila Real and Régua among them – in which you can get acquainted with the region's rich gastronomic traditions.

Settle into this cosy wooden cabin on the Minho coastline, ideal for a long weekend or couple's retreat. The large communal pool and children's play area offer entertainment and a refreshing break from the Portuguese sun, while the private patio boasts room to dine alfresco and work on that perfect tan. While space indoors is limited, the kitchen is fully equipped and one guest can be accommodated on the sofa bed. We think it's worth having a car here for getting around with ease, but if you don't drive, fear not. The centre of Fão is a breezy stroll away, while the golden sands of Praia de Ofir are easily reachable on foot.

This restored farmhouse sits in the nature-rich Portuguese region of Minho, encircled by valleys, sparkling rivers, plenty of cycling routes, and historical towns. You get a beautiful slice of that breathtaking nature from your countryside oasis. 

Whether you’re playing football on the soft grass, admiring the view from the terrace, or listening to the birds chatter while lying around the pool, nature is all around. You’re even welcomed by bougainvillea and cypress trees as you approach the stone brick home.

You’ll first notice the home’s traditional façade. Made up of three houses, two of which have long histories – the main house was a baker's, and the annexe, now a games room, was a distillery. Make use of the original bread and pizza oven for unforgettable meals, and whittle away evenings playing pool and drinking local wine. 

There’s plenty to keep you entertained here, but perhaps all you really want is to catch up on your book beside the pool. Let the hours drift by, breathing in the fresh country air while topping up your tan. Come dusk, the place to be is your balcony – nothing beats watching the sun dip into the sea. 

When it’s time to explore, you’re less than a mile from Afife and its beachy cafes, surf shops, seafood restaurants, and long stretch of sugary white sand. When you’re not catching waves or relaxing on the beach, hop on a hiking trail to one of the nearby waterfalls and discover the rugged mountain range. 

Valleys & Views

This Caldas de Aregos home is perfect for a relaxing break in Portugal. It’s surrounded by nature in the Douro region, where you can take a cruise along the river and discover local vineyards. If you’re anything like us, you’ll spend most of your time outside, swimming in the private pool and lounging in the sunshine. There’s a barbecue for alfresco dining, and a fully-equipped kitchen inside. We love the blend of traditional features like wood-beamed ceilings with a bohemian vibe – this is a charming and comfortable space to call home. 

Douro Days

Set in the heart of the spectacular Douro Valley, this 17th-century estate boasts sweeping river views. The vibe here is country living with a touch of grandeur - think exposed brick walls, four-poster beds, chandeliers and shutters. And with rooms spread across the main house and four charming outbuildings, there's plenty of space for up to sixteen guests. Spend your days lounging by the private pool or wandering the landscaped gardens, then choose between cruising the Douro River or sampling the region’s finest wines at one of the surrounding vineyards. Instead allowing you to soak up some typically Portuguese culture, cuisine, and even some Roman ruins in the history-laden villages that dot the valley. Hike or bike through unspoiled verdant landscapes, perhaps stopping at an authentic eatery for a taste of the local cuisine (we especially love the selections of local cheeses and meats on offer, as well as the hearty regional Caldo Verde). Then, it's back to the calm and comfort of your home away from home. 

Evenings can be spent sweating away the stress in your private sauna, replicating Portuguese favourites in the traditional covered outdoor churrasco, or simply absorbing every aspect of that phenomenal panoramic vista with a glass of Vinho Verde in hand. Be it an evening dip, a quick game or two of ping pong, or cosying up in the at-home cinema with a classic – this home provides plenty of scope for relaxation and action, socialising, or some much-needed me time.

The Sunshine House in the Hills

One of the highlights of this stunning home has to be the incredible views. The outlook over the River Douro, as well as the vineyards that surrounds the entire villa, is beautiful. You can enjoy the vistas from the private pool and balconies, as well as from the large, bright open-plan living space and bedrooms, too. When you want to explore the area, the town of Peso da Régua, situated on the western edge of the port-wine region, is just over 10 kilometres away.

Find total relaxation in the immersive countryside of Portugal’s verdant Minho region. Then of course there is that lovely lawn (perfect for a picnic or for any little ones to play on), the beautiful swimming pool that's simply made for sun-drenched afternoons, and even a mini football pitch and volleyball net for those who feel like getting active. We're utterly in love with this reimagined farmhouse-style property located just outside of the idyllic old fishing village of Esposende. From its sunny yellow facade complete with quaint panelled windows and traditional terracotta roof tiles to its elegant interior that retains many of its original, rustic features – not to mention the beautiful modern step-down swimming pool – we think it offers something truly unique and special for your holiday in this often-overlooked part of Portugal.

The indoor spaces of this home feel impressive and grand, and yet manage to exude a kind of homely warmth that's welcoming and comfortable. The bedrooms, in particular, are a favourite of ours. Awake as the gentle morning light begins to seep in through those large French windows with stained glass detailing and feel immediately enveloped in the majesty of these rooms, as the high ceilings and gorgeous furnishings create a sense of luxury. Coffee out on the terrace anyone? 

The living and dining rooms, too, have an undeniable opulence, giving off an irresistible old-world glamour. Make the most of the sense of occassion by coming together for a special meal, or simply enjoying one another's company in the effortless serenity of these spaces.

When you do fancy getting out of the villa, then you'll be spoilt for choice when it comes to things to do in the local area. Explore the local town of Esposende where you will find fantastic fish restaurants serving up the freshest seafood. Or, make the short 30-minute drive to the historic city of Oporto – the centre of which is classified as a World Heritage Site. The sand beaches of this part of the Portuguese coastline are under four kilometres away too, so grab the suncream and a beach towel and get out there for a day of sun, sea, and unbridled relaxation (as well as some high-octane watersports if you like). In the mood for more activity? Then there is both golf and horse riding on offer in the local area.

Feel revived with a refreshing dip in your private, outdoor pool before sauntering over to the barbecue area. Gorge on Portuguese eats while sat around the wooden dining table on the covered terrace.

If you fancy amping up the luxe factor, why not indulge in an at-home massage? Believe it or not, you’ll also be able to enjoy the services of a beautician and a private chef. This villa in Moldes, Arouca is the ideal spot for a proper getaway with family and friends. You'll have privacy and seclusion here, with stunning mountain views from the private pool and outdoor seating area. The home can only be reached by car, so you'll want to hire one for your trip, but it's well worth it. You'll be exploring the area in no time, including the spectacular hiking trails of Arouca Geopark and the town's local restaurants. Indoors, every bedroom enjoys its own en-suite, and while the kitchen is on the smaller side, you'll have everything you need for whipping up delicious dinners.

The Green Tide

Whether you're visiting the Douro region to sample its produce, soak up some sun, journey into Porto or head away with the family, this Peso da Régua apartment is a real find. On the ground floor you'll find a characterful living room, dining area and kitchen, while upstairs features two bedrooms and two bathrooms with standalone showers to ease any morning traffic. This home also grants you access to a glimmering communal pool, proximity to several inspiring hiking routes, and unique views of the remarkable mountains and river running through them. You'll be around an hour and twenty minutes from the vibrant city of Porto, although a car is strongly recommended for getting around.

The Grapes of Joy

With commanding views of the rural Douro and an infinity pool, this expansive villa is a dream holiday destination. Inside, multiple balconies and windows mean those stunning views are always in sight. 

The home has five bedrooms, each with their own bathroom, a dedicated kid’s pool and gardens – it's the ideal base for families travelling together. The interior is bright and offers plenty of space to relax and enjoy communal meals and movie nights.  

Days begin with pasteis de nata on the terrace – the hosts drop off fresh baked goods for breakfast every morning – followed by lazy hours by the pool with a book in hand. If you can prise yourself away from your lounger, the surrounding area is fine hiking territory. 

Sunsets here are show-stoppers, so make sure you’re back in time for a cold glass on the terrace as the sky turns every shade of orange and red. Round off with a night-time dip in the pool under a sky full of stars to make the most of every minute in this Portuguese oasis.

There’s no price for guessing what the city of Porto is famous for. However, you may be surprised to find that this fortified wine begins its life far from the city, in the vineyards found upstream and on either side of the river Douro, and it’s here where you’ll find this eye-catching villa. Overlooking the slopes of Portugal’s wine region, this home boasts panoramic views that are almost impossible to tear your eyes away from. At sunset, make a beeline for the infinity pool that stretches out across the width of the house. There’s a second heated swimming pool to the side, best reached through the open-plan living and dining room. Take a dip beneath a starlit sky or sunbathe during the day. Floor-to-ceiling sliding doors and windows can be found from the kitchen to the three bedrooms, effortlessly bridging the indoors and outside. The best views can be found from the balcony on the first floor. Since this area has been granted UNESCO World Heritage status, you’ll find that there’s plenty of exploring and hiking to do. But there’s also fun to be had at home on a rainy afternoon – challenge the group to a championship of billiards and table football and may the best team win.

The patio is decked out with lounge chairs, perfect for soaking up the sun before plunging into the pristine pool for a cooling dip. We have to say we think the garden is the ideal spot to begin mornings over fresh coffee and locally bought pastéis de nata and to end evenings with caipirinha cocktails under the starlit sky.
