We particularly like the handy vestibule that lets you fall asleep – doors open – to the outside’s breeze. Metres from the National Pantheon and the city’s famous Feira da Ladra flea market, this Alfama apartment is right in the heart of historic Lisbon. Inside, it’s a more modern affair with geometric feature walls, splashes of colour and mid-century furnishings. Enjoy the sweet and fluffy bolas de Berlim from your welcome hamper with a full-bodied espresso in the morning – eat together at the dining table or take a moment for yourself on the Juliet balcony, watching people come and go in the streets below as bedsheets flutter on washing lines. Wander through the higgledy-piggledy alleyways, discovering traditional tavernas shaded by orange trees in cobbled squares. Santa Apolónia metro station is a ten-minute walk downhill, connecting you to downtown. Come back to your neighbourhood just before dusk – the Miradouro de Santa Luzia is, in our opinion, the best spot to watch the sunset – especially with a glass of Vinho Verde from the kiosk.

In the hilly old streets of Lisbon’s Alfama neighbourhood, you’ve got viewpoints and ancient sights at every turn. From your doorstep, it’s a fifteen-minute walk to the ancient fortification of Castelo S. Jorge, overlooking the orange rooftops of Old Lisbon. A little closer to home, you can explore the trinkets and artworks of Mercado de Santa Clara, a vintage market five minutes’ walk away. Of course, this close to the centre, the streets around you are packed with restaurants, bars and bakeries to fuel your days.

Inside, fawn walls are livened up with bold floral artworks and pops of lipstick-red thanks to the plush dining chairs. The kitchen is a soothing space of lightwood and white, with everything you need for self-catering. Perhaps serve meals at the table in the conservatory-style covered courtyard where a roof of glass lets the natural light stream in.

Carefully laid out, welcoming, and beautifully furnished with natural materials, this charming ground-floor apartment made us feel right at home the minute we walked up to the facade of this typical Lisbon home. However, the design really shines here, and a lot of thought has gone into making the most of the small square footage. The original Pombalino partition wall in the kitchen adds character to the modern interior, creating a tasteful separation that doesn't make the room feel small – meanwhile, the bedroom packs in plenty of built-in storage. The charming outdoor terrace is perfect for an alfresco breakfast or late-night drink. However, when you want to venture beyond its four walls, Graça offers many local spots to explore. Our favourites include celebrating the sunset with a glass at Botequim before heading to dinner at O Pitéu da Graça. Don't let the unassuming exterior fool you – this neighbourhood standout attracts Lisbon's top chefs with its simple regional fare prepared to tried and tested recipes. It's first-come, first-served so arrive early, order a jug of house red and tuck in.

Situated in Alfama, this well-appointment apartment has the very best of historic Lisbon on its doorstep. The Miradouro de Santa Luzia (one of the best viewpoints in the city) and bustling Praça do Comércio are within walking distance, and there’s a Tram 28 tram stop a couple of hundred metres away. The age of the building means you may hear the neighbours during your stay, so we recommend packing earplugs if you’re a light sleeper. There are also some signs of wear and tear in the bathroom, though this is cosmetic, and everything works as it should.

If you're ready to experience the oldest and most authentic neighbourhood in Lisbon, this could be just the place for you. Set on a typically narrow street, lined with historic buildings, it's a traditional second-floor home with a very special secret. This city centre apartment comes with outside space in the form of a large patio with a central orange tree – and yes, you can help yourself to fruit in season.

Spend your days roaming the ancient streets and exploring the sights (you're never far from a Fado restaurant here) and come home to cook for the whole gang in the bright, open-plan living room, before padding out to the patio to eat together as the sun sets. Inside, it's a stylish mix of modern minimalism and country comfort. All-white walls and wood floors keep everything cool, while period touches like Juliet balconies and shuttered windows add elegance.

There's room for a large group, with one bedroom boasting a huge walk-in dressing room, and we think it's a delightful neighbourhood. With loads going on nearby, and plenty of good restaurants within a short walk, you may not want to go far, but there are excellent transport links if you do.

We love homes that are filled with art, and this bright apartment has more than just a few delightfully striking pieces. From the hidden portrait at the bottom of the lamp to the giant clothing pin, every room in this singular home hides a delightful surprise. 
 
Contemporary furnishings are spiced up with a sprinkling of antiques and work well against splashes of bright colour on the walls. It’s little wonder there’s an artist’s studio on the ground floor, belonging to a prominent local creative. 
 
Head out to the private leafy balcony giving way to views over Lisbon’s rooftops – the perfect spot to begin days over coffee and fresh pastéis de nata or to end nights over a celebratory glass of wine. With an elegant dining space here too, there’s no need to go out for a smart meal, but should you choose to do so, you’ll find a plethora of restaurants and bars within easy walking distance.

With the iconic Tram 28 stopping less than a five-minute walk away too, there’s no end to the cultural and historic delights that await.

Whether you’re visiting Lisbon as a family or here with another couple, this cosy apartment nestled in the historic Graça district will make for a good base while you explore all that this city has to offer. Situated within walking distance from Graça square, Fado Museum, Panteão Nacional and the viewpoint of Portas do Sol, you’ll be able to really take advantage of this home’s prime location.

While the inside is certainly on the more compact side, there’s plenty of light and warmth here to make up for the small size. Come inside to find an open-plan living and dining area, with a snuggly window seating area and a table where you can savour your communal meals or catch up on any work you may have outstanding. We think the kitchen is better suited for rustling up lighter bites, rather than elaborate feats, but with an abundance of fantastic restaurants on your doorstep, this shouldn’t be a problem. Get a good night’s rest in either of the home’s two bedrooms and wake up to the lovely views of the city – after breakfast, get ready to head out and discover all that Lisbon has to offer.

Amazing Graça

Right around the corner from Castelo São Jorge, this large, elegant home is within walking distance of most central Lisbon sights – perfect for a first-time visitor to the city. Thanks to the original windows, this apartment enjoys fantastic natural light – and the well-executed hangout spots under them are great for reading. The carefully selected furniture works well with the original architectural features, and your hosts have been careful not to overfill the home. You'll be staying in Alfama, one of Lisbon's oldest neighbourhoods, famous for fado houses and wonderful hospitality. After exploring on foot, your home is conveniently close to a stop on the iconic number 12 tram, which means you can rest up as you trundle back up the hill. End the day in true local style at Botequim, a couple of hundred metres up the road. Grab a seat outside this iconic Lisbon watering hole and sip on a glass of local wine as the sun sets.

Saint George's Retreat

It doesn't get much better than this Alfama apartment for a first-time visitor to the city. Located a five-minute walk from São Jorge Castle and ten minutes to Sé Cathedral – both excellent starting points for a day of sightseeing – it's the perfect choice for a romantic weekend getaway or a convenient base for a solo traveller who wants to be within walking distance of the action.

Climb up the stairs and enter this bright and comfortable apartment, decorated with stylish simplicity in mind. Up here on the second floor, the open-plan kitchen/dining/living room is the undoubted heart of the home. 

We particularly enjoyed the treetop views that will accompany your culinary efforts in the kitchenette prior to sitting down to dine around the table. After dinner, feel free to unwind on the sofa or head to bed and watch TV in supreme comfort.

From the crotchet tablecloth to the wicker chairs and exposed stone walls, there's a lot of lovely traditional charm in this home. Set in the Graça neighbourhood, it feels quintessentially Portuguese, with antique furniture and an eclectic interior. The cosy kitchen is strung with pots, pans and old branches, while two living spaces host velvet sofas, towering bookcases and intimate writing desks. The bedrooms are similarly retro, with parquet flooring, maps on the walls and heavy wooden shutters to keep out the hustle and bustle from the cobbled streets below. The charms of the capital are in easy reach, though you can get a taste of the atmosphere just as well from the roof area. Pull up a chair, open a bottle of Vinho Verde and admire the scenery from the porthole-style windows. But if that's not enough, you can take in the panoramic views of the city – including the National Pantheon – from the communal rooftop terrace. Back inside, the modern design is sleek and stylish, with lots of natural light and cosy spots to unwind. When you feel like cooking, the glossy kitchen has everything you need to rustle up a meal and the living room's fireplace is perfect for chilly evenings. And we loved the welcome basket on arrival, filled with a bottle of white wine, fresh fruit and delicious Portuguese custard tarts. Location-wise, you're a little outside the bustling city centre, but it's still an excellent spot to base yourself. Restaurants and museums are just a stone's throw away, while Castelo de S. Jorge is twenty minutes on foot. But with Santa Apolónia Station a three-minute walk away, getting around the rest of the city is a breeze – you can be in Praça do Comércio in five minutes, flat.

This cheery home embodies everything we love about Lisbon’s Alfama neighbourhood, from its bright colours to its traditional details. You’ll love waking up starting your day off in the luxurious marble en-suite, then walking out onto your beautiful private terrace for a sunny breakfast amongst the tiled ornaments and leafy plants. After catching up on some reading on the sofa or the bedroom’s zebra-striped armchair, head out to explore your surroundings – you couldn’t be better placed to get the most out of the city’s sights. São Jorge Castle is a mere five-minute walk away, the harbour-facing Praça do Comércio a fifteen-minute stroll from your door, while Bairro Alto’s Fado bars and hip restaurants are twenty minutes away on foot. Don't miss making a beeline for the Portas Do Sol Terrace at sunset too for awe-inspiring views over the Tagus, a four-minute walk away.

Rua dos Cegos in Alfama homes one of the oldest buildings in Lisbon, and the street itself is a treat to explore and immerse yourself in its history. Bedrock Cavern isn't as old, but due to the architectural design that was meant to keep the heat out, it doesn't get a lot of natural light. Still, it's modern and well-designed with a minimalistic Scandi vibe. We loved the cosy bedroom and the view of the busy streets below.

Located in the vicinity of Alfama's most popular sights, Birchwood is a great option for friends' or families' first visit to the city. This is a simple home where wood dominates both the floor and the majority of the furniture, adding warmth to the otherwise scarcely decorated spaces. Even though we'd like to see more art on the walls, we liked the simplicity and the natural light in the communal areas.

This split-level studio is simply bursting with character. Furnished with a quirky aesthetic and filled with curious art, this is much more than just a place to sleep in. Even though this home doesn't get a lot of daylight, the careful placement of artificial light helps create a cosy, intimate vibe. Located on a quiet street in the medieval neighbourhood of Alfama, you'll only be a short walk away from the riverside.

Oh, and another highlight, the iconic Tram 28 stops right outside the door.

Still, the chic brick walls of Minimalist Unity create a pleasant atmosphere, greatly aided by the generous use of wood. This home is right next to São Vicente da Fora monastery, and it even shares a wall with the venerable attraction. Located right next to Feira de Ladra, the flea market brings the area to life every Tuesday and Saturday.

It's a small, split-level cottage, which even shares part of its wall with the monastery. It's clear that a professional was involved in the creation of this home – the original architectural features coexist with mid-century-inspired furniture, resulting in a perfect hybrid between Portuguese and Scandinavian design. This home is located right next to Feira de Ladra, which brings the area to life every Tuesday and Saturday.

The view of this compact fourth-floor flat is its trump card. From the kitchen window and balcony, raised above the neighbouring roofs, you look out to the Tejo River. Set over two floors this studio-like home (there are no separate bedrooms) is a good base to explore the Alfama neighbourhood – as one of Lisbon’s oldest districts, its maze of cobbled streets lead to a number of historic attractions like the Castle and Se Cathedral. The home might be small, but its abundance of skylights and stunning view provide a bright and calm environment.

Originally part of an ancient convent, the house, which dates back to 1512, was destroyed during the 1755 earthquake. Restored and converted into an apartment, it still carries more than a little of its former grandeur. 

While the shortage of natural light might be a downside for some, we actually love the slightly sombre yet cosy feel of the place, and warm lighting and gorgeous furnishings will make you feel instantly welcome. There is something of a museum-like feel about this place – and we mean this in the best possible way. How often do you find yourself wanting to lounge about period sofas and look inside antique books while wandering around museums? Well, here you get the chance to realise this dream – history is your playground. 

But it isn’t all old-school artefacts – there are enough modern touches to make your stay comfortable, and you’ll find all the necessary amenities to have a truly relaxed and restful time.

Experience a more traditional side of Lisbon with a stay at this contemporary apartment set in history-rich Alfama. Its steep, cobblestoned streets dotted with backstreet cafes are everything you’d imagined Lisbon to be. And there’s a tram outside the apartment when it’s time to explore another corner of the city. While we love the sharp design aesthetics of this home, it may feel a little pared back for some. We also think the compact kitchenette is only really suitable for rustling up breakfast and lighter bites. But with Porto's buzzy restaurants to try out, we suspect you’ll be eating out instead.

The azulejos-clad facades of this Alfama bolthole are firmly planted in old Lisbon. But step inside, and this contemporary home with a small balcony overlooking an inner courtyard is bang up to date. Each minimalist bedroom has a separate bathroom, although the last two guests will share a double sofa bed in the lounge. It’s also worth noting the kitchen is compact. But with tapas bars in the cobbled streets below, we think you’ll be eating out instead. Set in the history-rich Alfama district, the tram line running outside the home will be handy. And never fear – those soundproof windows will keep things quiet when it’s time to hit the sack.

With the Mercado da Baixa a six-minute stroll away too for fresh produce as well as countless restaurants, shops and bars in your neighbourhood, you've got everything you need for a fun, culture-filled stay.

In the heart of Lisbon’s historic centre, this apartment is a five-minute walk to the waterside Praça do Comércio lined with shops and restaurants on the River Tagus. Winding, cobbled streets packed with bars and restaurants lead from the apartment to Castelo de S. Jorge on the hilltop, a ten-minute walk away. True to its historic surroundings, this home retains some original features of the traditional Pombaline building it’s housed in. A wooden frame from the post-earthquake reconstruction of 1755 juts out into the living room. Bold black and gold artwork has been hand-picked to complement the wooden structure. Waking up in the master bedroom is a real treat as sunlight streams through French windows, which can be opened up to create a Juliet balcony.

The Handhake's baren bones are great – this home is located inside a renovated Baixa townhouse, which has high ceilings and French windows as standard, but the host didn’t rely solely on that. There are a few nice pieces of art in here, notably the statuettes and the mirrors in the bedroom, which give it a modern look.

This stylish apartment sits atop the highest hill in Lisbon. Thanks to the hardwood floors, stone wall, small balconies and large windows that fill the space with light, there's a cosy vibe here that will make you feel right at home. Oh, and did we mention the view? Just step out onto the balcony and you'll see the sparkling river in the distance. There's a fully-stocked kitchen that makes cooking a breeze, and your hosts are also more than happy to arrange exciting extras like breakfast delivery, home massages, surf lessons, a cruise on the Tagus and even helicopter rides. Though you're a bit far from Praça do Comércio and the city centre (it's a fifteen-minute bus ride), staying in Graça is worth it. You'll find colourful houses, local restaurants making traditional Portuguese fare and independent shops nestled amongst the cobblestone alleyways. Not to mention this area has some of the best viewpoints in Lisbon – we suggest Miradouro da Graça, which is a fifteen-minute walk away.

This laid-back home in Chiado is perfect for those looking to be in the heart of Lisbon’s action. Surrounded by some of the city’s best sights, this unpresumptuous home allows its open spaces and huge windows do the talking, with a minimalist design aesthetic that feels as chic as it does calm. We love the living room’s tall corniced ceilings and the large shuttered windows that make the whole space feel bright. The kitchen, too, is a masterclass in elegant simplicity, concentrating on natural textures – a marble countertop and hardwood floors – and featuring a long table that just begs to be gathered around for morning and evening feasts. The two pared-back bedrooms complete the home, along with an azulejo adorned bathroom that gives the apartment a touch of Portuguese traditionalism. Away from the apartment, you’re just a seven-minute walk from the bustling Time Out food market, a fifteen-minute walk from Praça do Comércio and a twenty-five-minute stroll from São Jorge Castle. Bairro Alto is also right around the corner, five minutes away, with its bohemian cobbled streets packed with hip boutiques, quirky bars and intimate fado bars.

Sitting just a three-minute walk from lively Pink Street and a stone’s throw from the Douro River, this design-focused apartment offers a stylish stay in Lisbon’s cultural and historic heart. 
 
It’s hard to choose our favourite feature here – from the living room’s curved bubble sofa to the leaf-print walls and the grand dining table with its jewel-tone velvet seats, there’s an air of modern sophistication here that reflects the city’s eclecticism. Ample natural light pours in through the living area’s arched French doors that give way to pretty Juliet balconies with views of the street below. Perch here with your evening glass of Portuguese wine when you’re not out sampling Pink Street’s famous nightlife, and end the night with a deliciously comfortable sleep in the blue and green bedrooms. Factor in the pair of bathrooms with their relaxing rainfall showers, and you’ve got everything you need for a blissful stay. 
 
When it comes to sightseeing, discover Pink Street’s many bars and eateries nearby, or make a beeline for Praça do Comércio, a ten-minute walk away. You’re also a six-minute stroll from the popular Time Out Market, a ten-minute walk from the Santa Justa Lift, and the Alfama district is twenty minutes away on foot. With the iconic Tram 28 passing by just 100 metres from your door too, the city is yours for the taking. 


Pink Echoes

Perched on top of a renovated townhouse, View & Walkability boasts a fantastic location and a great view from the balcony. Rua de São Nicolau is within walking distance to all the central sights, restaurants, and cafes – but the central location does translate to a vibrant atmosphere that won't suit those who are looking for a tranquil stay. Our favourite hangout spot in this home is the balcony, which is great for a morning coffee, but even on rainy days, the living room gets great natural light. We also loved the eclectic design that mixes the old and new.

View & Walkability

Baby Bath

Walkability is a home with a clear advantage – staying in the centre of Baixa will give you easy access to all the famous sights, cafes, and restaurants in the area. The architecture is authentic, but the busy atmosphere might not be for those seeking a slice of quiet Portuguese life. Located in a beautifully renovated townhouse, this is a modern home where preserved architectural features mix seamlessly with the eclectic furniture. We loved the natural light in the living room and the urban view from the balconet, as well as the quiet bedroom that guarantees a good night’s sleep.

Walkability

Staying this close to Praça do Comércio is great if you've only got a few days to immerse yourself in the city. Baixa is a treasury of sights, although it comes with a caveat of authenticity – the area is usually buzzing with tourists, and you'll have to travel a little if you want a more local feel. Green Creek is an immaculate home that simply feels high-end. The furniture is elegant, the natural light is fantastic, the design vision is coherent, and we loved the preserved gaiolas pombalinas that separate the dining from the living room areas.

Step-Free Access

Marquis Cross blends the new and the traditional very well. The host has preserved parts of the original gaiola Pombalina (the wooden framework around which these buildings were constructed), but much of the rest of the flat is far more modern. The location on Rua Augusta is going to be divisive – you can’t get more central, but every tourist and street performer has also worked that out and spend the day milling up and down. Inside, however, it’s surprisingly quiet, at least compared to other flats in the area.
