Perch here in the morning with a fresh cup of coffee while taking in views of the square below or gather here at sundown for a glass of wine before exploring the local dining scene.

Climb up the stairs and enter this bright and comfortable apartment, decorated with stylish simplicity in mind. Up here on the second floor, the open-plan kitchen/dining/living room is the undoubted heart of the home. 

We particularly enjoyed the treetop views that will accompany your culinary efforts in the kitchenette prior to sitting down to dine around the table. After dinner, feel free to unwind on the sofa or head to bed and watch TV in supreme comfort.

Situated in Alfama, this well-appointment apartment has the very best of historic Lisbon on its doorstep. The Miradouro de Santa Luzia (one of the best viewpoints in the city) and bustling Praça do Comércio are within walking distance, and there’s a Tram 28 tram stop a couple of hundred metres away. The age of the building means you may hear the neighbours during your stay, so we recommend packing earplugs if you’re a light sleeper. There are also some signs of wear and tear in the bathroom, though this is cosmetic, and everything works as it should.

This cheery home embodies everything we love about Lisbon’s Alfama neighbourhood, from its bright colours to its traditional details. Housed in a beautiful pink building topped with the city’s emblematic red roof tiles, there’s something uniquely modern about this stylish home while remaining true to its historic surroundings. You’ll love waking up starting your day off in the luxurious marble en-suite, then walking out onto your beautiful private terrace for a sunny breakfast amongst the tiled ornaments and leafy plants. After catching up on some reading on the sofa or the bedroom’s zebra-striped armchair, head out to explore your surroundings – you couldn’t be better placed to get the most out of the city’s sights. São Jorge Castle is a mere five-minute walk away, the harbour-facing Praça do Comércio a fifteen-minute stroll from your door, while Bairro Alto’s Fado bars and hip restaurants are twenty minutes away on foot. Set on a typically narrow street, lined with historic buildings, it's a traditional second-floor home with a very special secret. This city centre apartment comes with outside space in the form of a large patio with a central orange tree – and yes, you can help yourself to fruit in season.

Spend your days roaming the ancient streets and exploring the sights (you're never far from a Fado restaurant here) and come home to cook for the whole gang in the bright, open-plan living room, before padding out to the patio to eat together as the sun sets. Inside, it's a stylish mix of modern minimalism and country comfort. All-white walls and wood floors keep everything cool, while period touches like Juliet balconies and shuttered windows add elegance.

There's room for a large group, with one bedroom boasting a huge walk-in dressing room, and we think it's a delightful neighbourhood. With loads going on nearby, and plenty of good restaurants within a short walk, you may not want to go far, but there are excellent transport links if you do.

This playful pad offers a central location and places you in a prime spot for exploring Lisbon's cultural landmarks on foot. Even for ventures further afield, you'll find Graça bus stop is only a minute's walk away. We think it's ideal for families and groups of friends, with a private outside dining terrace complete with a barbecue, as well as plenty of indoor space to relax. The colourful bedrooms will have you up and raring to go come morning – and just as well, with so much to see and do nearby. Note that there's no lift here, so be prepared to climb three flights of stairs to reach the apartment.

Carefully laid out, welcoming, and beautifully furnished with natural materials, this charming ground-floor apartment made us feel right at home the minute we walked up to the facade of this typical Lisbon home. However, the design really shines here, and a lot of thought has gone into making the most of the small square footage. The original Pombalino partition wall in the kitchen adds character to the modern interior, creating a tasteful separation that doesn't make the room feel small – meanwhile, the bedroom packs in plenty of built-in storage. The charming outdoor terrace is perfect for an alfresco breakfast or late-night drink. However, when you want to venture beyond its four walls, Graça offers many local spots to explore. Our favourites include celebrating the sunset with a glass at Botequim before heading to dinner at O Pitéu da Graça. Don't let the unassuming exterior fool you – this neighbourhood standout attracts Lisbon's top chefs with its simple regional fare prepared to tried and tested recipes. It's first-come, first-served so arrive early, order a jug of house red and tuck in.

Right around the corner from Castelo São Jorge, this large, elegant home is within walking distance of most central Lisbon sights – perfect for a first-time visitor to the city. Thanks to the original windows, this apartment enjoys fantastic natural light – and the well-executed hangout spots under them are great for reading. The carefully selected furniture works well with the original architectural features, and your hosts have been careful not to overfill the home. You'll be staying in Alfama, one of Lisbon's oldest neighbourhoods, famous for fado houses and wonderful hospitality. After exploring on foot, your home is conveniently close to a stop on the iconic number 12 tram, which means you can rest up as you trundle back up the hill. End the day in true local style at Botequim, a couple of hundred metres up the road. Grab a seat outside this iconic Lisbon watering hole and sip on a glass of local wine as the sun sets.

Pull up a chair, open a bottle of Vinho Verde and admire the scenery from the porthole-style windows. And we loved the welcome basket on arrival, filled with a bottle of white wine, fresh fruit and delicious Portuguese custard tarts. Location-wise, you're a little outside the bustling city centre, but it's still an excellent spot to base yourself. Restaurants and museums are just a stone's throw away, while Castelo de S. Jorge is twenty minutes on foot. But with Santa Apolónia Station a three-minute walk away, getting around the rest of the city is a breeze – you can be in Praça do Comércio in five minutes, flat.

Originally part of an ancient convent, the house, which dates back to 1512, was destroyed during the 1755 earthquake. Restored and converted into an apartment, it still carries more than a little of its former grandeur. 

While the shortage of natural light might be a downside for some, we actually love the slightly sombre yet cosy feel of the place, and warm lighting and gorgeous furnishings will make you feel instantly welcome. There is something of a museum-like feel about this place – and we mean this in the best possible way. How often do you find yourself wanting to lounge about period sofas and look inside antique books while wandering around museums? Well, here you get the chance to realise this dream – history is your playground. 

But it isn’t all old-school artefacts – there are enough modern touches to make your stay comfortable, and you’ll find all the necessary amenities to have a truly relaxed and restful time.

Located in the residential São Vicente, you'll only be a short walk away from the medieval Alfama and São Vicente de Fora Monastery.

Located in the vicinity of Alfama's most popular sights, Birchwood is a great option for friends' or families' first visit to the city. This is a simple home where wood dominates both the floor and the majority of the furniture, adding warmth to the otherwise scarcely decorated spaces. Even though we'd like to see more art on the walls, we liked the simplicity and the natural light in the communal areas.

Rua dos Cegos in Alfama homes one of the oldest buildings in Lisbon, and the street itself is a treat to explore and immerse yourself in its history. Bedrock Cavern isn't as old, but due to the architectural design that was meant to keep the heat out, it doesn't get a lot of natural light. Still, it's modern and well-designed with a minimalistic Scandi vibe. We loved the cosy bedroom and the view of the busy streets below.

Whether you’re visiting Lisbon as a family or here with another couple, this cosy apartment nestled in the historic Graça district will make for a good base while you explore all that this city has to offer. Situated within walking distance from Graça square, Fado Museum, Panteão Nacional and the viewpoint of Portas do Sol, you’ll be able to really take advantage of this home’s prime location.

While the inside is certainly on the more compact side, there’s plenty of light and warmth here to make up for the small size. Come inside to find an open-plan living and dining area, with a snuggly window seating area and a table where you can savour your communal meals or catch up on any work you may have outstanding. We think the kitchen is better suited for rustling up lighter bites, rather than elaborate feats, but with an abundance of fantastic restaurants on your doorstep, this shouldn’t be a problem. Get a good night’s rest in either of the home’s two bedrooms and wake up to the lovely views of the city – after breakfast, get ready to head out and discover all that Lisbon has to offer.

The neighbouring streets of Alfama are some of the oldest parts of Lisbon, where you can easily make new friends while walking through history. The thing that really sets this home apart from many others is its spacious terrace that spans the whole apartment. There's a dining area for alfresco meals and a comfy outdoor sofa and chairs for evening drinks. We love that both bedrooms open out onto the patio too. There are views over the area and to the river from the living room's large windows as well. And what a neighbourhood this is. If you've heard of Alfama, you'll know it has plenty of authentic Fado restaurants. And attractions, including São Jorge Castle, Lisbon Cathedral, and the Miradouro das Portas do Sol are under a ten-minute walk away. Oh, and another highlight, the iconic Tram 28 stops right outside the door.

This home doesn't feel like a typically designed Portuguese apartment – the Scandi-inspired design makes it look like an out-of-place cottage that you'd expect to find in the Alps. Still, the chic brick walls of Minimalist Unity create a pleasant atmosphere, greatly aided by the generous use of wood. This home is right next to São Vicente da Fora monastery, and it even shares a wall with the venerable attraction. Located right next to Feira de Ladra, the flea market brings the area to life every Tuesday and Saturday.

It's a small, split-level cottage, which even shares part of its wall with the monastery. It's clear that a professional was involved in the creation of this home – the original architectural features coexist with mid-century-inspired furniture, resulting in a perfect hybrid between Portuguese and Scandinavian design. This home is located right next to Feira de Ladra, which brings the area to life every Tuesday and Saturday.

From the crotchet tablecloth to the wicker chairs and exposed stone walls, there's a lot of lovely traditional charm in this home. Set in the Graça neighbourhood, it feels quintessentially Portuguese, with antique furniture and an eclectic interior. The cosy kitchen is strung with pots, pans and old branches, while two living spaces host velvet sofas, towering bookcases and intimate writing desks. The bedrooms are similarly retro, with parquet flooring, maps on the walls and heavy wooden shutters to keep out the hustle and bustle from the cobbled streets below. The charms of the capital are in easy reach, though you can get a taste of the atmosphere just as well from the roof area. Overlooking terracotta roofs and out towards the ocean, the terrace has loungers and a dining set, perfect for alfresco drinks come evening.

We love homes that are filled with art, and this bright apartment has more than just a few delightfully striking pieces. From the hidden portrait at the bottom of the lamp to the giant clothing pin, every room in this singular home hides a delightful surprise. 
 
Contemporary furnishings are spiced up with a sprinkling of antiques and work well against splashes of bright colour on the walls. It’s little wonder there’s an artist’s studio on the ground floor, belonging to a prominent local creative. 
 
Head out to the private leafy balcony giving way to views over Lisbon’s rooftops – the perfect spot to begin days over coffee and fresh pastéis de nata or to end nights over a celebratory glass of wine. With an elegant dining space here too, there’s no need to go out for a smart meal, but should you choose to do so, you’ll find a plethora of restaurants and bars within easy walking distance. 
 
Speaking of exploring, you’ve got plenty to see and do nearby, including São Jorge Castle (a five-minute walk), the Feira da Ladra flea market (a three-minute walk), Lisbon Cathedral (a twenty-minute walk) and bustling Praça do Comércio (also a twenty-minute walk). With the iconic Tram 28 stopping less than a five-minute walk away too, there’s no end to the cultural and historic delights that await.

Nestled in the historic district of Alfama, the home sets you up for a traditional stay, within easy reach of the city's top attractions. And yet the area is surprisingly quiet, and with the inviting terrace that awaits you, it's the perfect pad for those who like a quick recharge in between adventures. The living space is bright and practical, with a fully equipped kitchenette, and both bedrooms come with desks for those working remotely. Just note that you'll need to climb up a staircase to reach this apartment on the third floor. 

Bliss in Alfama

The azulejos-clad facades of this Alfama bolthole are firmly planted in old Lisbon. But step inside, and this contemporary home with a small balcony overlooking an inner courtyard is bang up to date. Each minimalist bedroom has a separate bathroom, although the last two guests will share a double sofa bed in the lounge. It’s also worth noting the kitchen is compact. But with tapas bars in the cobbled streets below, we think you’ll be eating out instead. Set in the history-rich Alfama district, the tram line running outside the home will be handy. And never fear – those soundproof windows will keep things quiet when it’s time to hit the sack.

Soul of Lisbon

Experience a more traditional side of Lisbon with a stay at this contemporary apartment set in history-rich Alfama. Its steep, cobblestoned streets dotted with backstreet cafes are everything you’d imagined Lisbon to be. And there’s a tram outside the apartment when it’s time to explore another corner of the city. While we love the sharp design aesthetics of this home, it may feel a little pared back for some. We also think the compact kitchenette is only really suitable for rustling up breakfast and lighter bites. But with Porto's buzzy restaurants to try out, we suspect you’ll be eating out instead.

Minimalist design without Scandinavian influences is hard to come by these days, making this chic home stand out. With a cowhide rug and industrial modernist chairs in the living room, we felt like we stepped into a stylish New Yorker's pad – that is, until the azulejo details brought us right back into Alfama. This home is located five minutes from the emblematic Castelo de S. Jorge and a twelve-minute walk from the scenic Miradouro da Senhora do Monte. But, if you'd rather give your feet a rest, you're right next to a stop on the famous number 28 tram, which means you're never more than a few steps away from a Lisbon sightseeing adventure.  

Helping Hands

The view of this compact fourth-floor flat is its trump card. From the kitchen window and balcony, raised above the neighbouring roofs, you look out to the Tejo River. Set over two floors this studio-like home (there are no separate bedrooms) is a good base to explore the Alfama neighbourhood – as one of Lisbon’s oldest districts, its maze of cobbled streets lead to a number of historic attractions like the Castle and Se Cathedral. The home might be small, but its abundance of skylights and stunning view provide a bright and calm environment.

Metres from the National Pantheon and the city’s famous Feira da Ladra flea market, this Alfama apartment is right in the heart of historic Lisbon. Inside, it’s a more modern affair with geometric feature walls, splashes of colour and mid-century furnishings. Enjoy the sweet and fluffy bolas de Berlim from your welcome hamper with a full-bodied espresso in the morning – eat together at the dining table or take a moment for yourself on the Juliet balcony, watching people come and go in the streets below as bedsheets flutter on washing lines. Wander through the higgledy-piggledy alleyways, discovering traditional tavernas shaded by orange trees in cobbled squares. Santa Apolónia metro station is a ten-minute walk downhill, connecting you to downtown. Come back to your neighbourhood just before dusk – the Miradouro de Santa Luzia is, in our opinion, the best spot to watch the sunset – especially with a glass of Vinho Verde from the kiosk.

Tucked away on a residential street in Alfama, this home is a triple threat of charm, location, and views. This is a cosy haven with a simple design aesthetic that focuses on functionality and comfort – but we really liked the French doors and the hardwood steps that take you up to the attic bedroom. We were torn between the quaint communal terrace at the back and the spectacular river views from the living room. In the end, we decided to split our time between the two. Want to discover the real Lisbon? Slip on your most comfortable trainers and get lost in the charming labyrinthine streets of Alfama. If you want to save your legs, two of the city's most iconic tram routes pass within five minutes of your hillside home. Music lovers should head to the Museu do Fado, a three-minute walk, while history buffs will enjoy the impressive Castelo de São Jorge and Sé de Lisboa, both ten minutes away.

This stylish apartment sits atop the highest hill in Lisbon. Thanks to the hardwood floors, stone wall, small balconies and large windows that fill the space with light, there's a cosy vibe here that will make you feel right at home. Oh, and did we mention the view? Just step out onto the balcony and you'll see the sparkling river in the distance. There's a fully-stocked kitchen that makes cooking a breeze, and your hosts are also more than happy to arrange exciting extras like breakfast delivery, home massages, surf lessons, a cruise on the Tagus and even helicopter rides. Though you're a bit far from Praça do Comércio and the city centre (it's a fifteen-minute bus ride), staying in Graça is worth it. You'll find colourful houses, local restaurants making traditional Portuguese fare and independent shops nestled amongst the cobblestone alleyways. Not to mention this area has some of the best viewpoints in Lisbon – we suggest Miradouro da Graça, which is a fifteen-minute walk away. 

Picture Perfect

Perched on top of a renovated townhouse, View & Walkability boasts a fantastic location and a great view from the balcony. Rua de São Nicolau is within walking distance to all the central sights, restaurants, and cafes – but the central location does translate to a vibrant atmosphere that won't suit those who are looking for a tranquil stay. Our favourite hangout spot in this home is the balcony, which is great for a morning coffee, but even on rainy days, the living room gets great natural light. We also loved the eclectic design that mixes the old and new.

View & Walkability

Like its lovely downstairs neighbour, Quarta Bicicleta is one of the nicest homes in this part of Alfama – and trust us, we've seen many. The location at the foot of the São Jorge Castle will make sightseeing effortless, and the terrace has some pretty sweet views of the river too. With a coherent modern design and high quality furniture, the only thing we can really fault this home for are the slanting ceilings (if you're tall), and the wall art might not be to everyone's taste. 

Quarta Bicicleta

This beautifully bright apartment between Lisbon's Chiado and Alfama neighbourhoods has it all – a great location and a blend of modern styling and character features. Summing up this historic part of Lisbon perfectly, it's in a typical Pombalina building – freshly renovated with impeccable attention to detail. If local period architecture is of interest to you, you'll love the high, ornately decorated ceilings, the tall windows and the traditional narrow balcony with wrought iron railings. And it's not too hard to spot the building's defining feature – the Pombalina wooden cage built in to strengthen the stone buildings after the great earthquake of the 1750s. Bright and smartly designed, this charming home has been reimagined for the 21st century, with a cool black kitchen, mid-century modern furniture and tasteful wall art. Comfortable and welcoming, you'll spend your mornings sipping coffee, watching the street come to life from your balcony. The two bedrooms are pared-back yet elegantly dressed, while the two spa-like bathrooms with their rainfall showers are a treat to wake up to each morning. Outside of your home, both the Santa Justa Lift and Praça do Comércio are a seven-minute walk away, São Jorge Castle is walkable in eight and Lisbon Cathedral is a mere three minutes on foot from your door. With the Mercado da Baixa a six-minute stroll away too for fresh produce as well as countless restaurants, shops and bars in your neighbourhood, you've got everything you need for a fun, culture-filled stay. 

Bigode Chique

In cities across the globe, it's more often than not true that the closer a home is to the centre, the less likely it is that it'll have any outdoor space. This apartment in the middle of Lisbon bucks this trend – not only does it have a private terrace with an alfresco dining table, but guests also get access to a communal garden that's blessed with bountiful amounts of plant life.

While these respective spaces are an explosion of colour, the home's interior is much simpler by contrast. The walls and ceilings are painted stark white, which makes it feel instantly bright and welcoming. There's a minimalist approach to furnishings and decoration, although the kitchen that could kindly be described as space-efficient perhaps embraces this trend a little too much. Aside from that, there's very little to fault with this simple but elegant home.

To top it all off, the location is excellent regardless if you're visiting Lisbon for the first or fiftieth time. Both Museu Nacional do Azulejo and Castelo de São Jorge can be reached in around twenty minutes on foot, albeit in opposite directions, while Praça do Comércio takes all of eighteen minutes to reach on the tram.

Wonderfully bright and designed with a keen eye for detail, this beautiful apartment in Lisbon’s scenic Mouraria neighbourhood is the ideal base for those wanting to be within easy walking distance of the city’s best sights. The Azure Mezzanine

There's more to Alfama than exploring medieval architecture and its fado legacy. Its maze-like streets are a joy to get lost in, and the nearby waterfront is a popular nightlife spot, so make sure to pack a pair of shoes for every occasion. This apartment stands out for its minimalist modern design in this historic area. There's a lot of space for you to enjoy, filled only by a few select pieces of furniture, which sets you up for a relaxing stay without lots of clutter around. There's a bedroom balcony, which isn't huge, but it does offer a brilliant view of the Sé Cathedral – which offers a taste of what the city has in store. So, lace up your trainers and set out to explore the city's seven hills. You're only a few minutes from the impressive Praça do Comércio and the grid-like shopping streets of downtown Baixa. If you fancy exploring further afield, then you're close to the Sé stop of the iconic 28 tram.
