Situated in the picturesque Lima Valley, this location offers up an alternative to the classic beach break. Instead allowing you to soak up some typically Portuguese culture, cuisine, and even some Roman ruins in the history-laden villages that dot the valley. Hike or bike through unspoiled verdant landscapes, perhaps stopping at an authentic eatery for a taste of the local cuisine (we especially love the selections of local cheeses and meats on offer, as well as the hearty regional Caldo Verde). Then, it's back to the calm and comfort of your home away from home. 

Evenings can be spent sweating away the stress in your private sauna, replicating Portuguese favourites in the traditional covered outdoor churrasco, or simply absorbing every aspect of that phenomenal panoramic vista with a glass of Vinho Verde in hand. Be it an evening dip, a quick game or two of ping pong, or cosying up in the at-home cinema with a classic – this home provides plenty of scope for relaxation and action, socialising, or some much-needed me time.

This restored farmhouse sits in the nature-rich Portuguese region of Minho, encircled by valleys, sparkling rivers, plenty of cycling routes, and historical towns. You get a beautiful slice of that breathtaking nature from your countryside oasis. 

Whether you’re playing football on the soft grass, admiring the view from the terrace, or listening to the birds chatter while lying around the pool, nature is all around. You’re even welcomed by bougainvillea and cypress trees as you approach the stone brick home.

You’ll first notice the home’s traditional façade. Made up of three houses, two of which have long histories – the main house was a baker's, and the annexe, now a games room, was a distillery. Make use of the original bread and pizza oven for unforgettable meals, and whittle away evenings playing pool and drinking local wine. 

There’s plenty to keep you entertained here, but perhaps all you really want is to catch up on your book beside the pool. Let the hours drift by, breathing in the fresh country air while topping up your tan. Come dusk, the place to be is your balcony – nothing beats watching the sun dip into the sea. 

When it’s time to explore, you’re less than a mile from Afife and its beachy cafes, surf shops, seafood restaurants, and long stretch of sugary white sand. When you’re not catching waves or relaxing on the beach, hop on a hiking trail to one of the nearby waterfalls and discover the rugged mountain range.

These two stone farmhouses provide a rural haven in the heart of the Minho hills. The home is set on a 210-acre wine estate – you'll have nothing to disturb you here but the odd worker roaming the fields and vineyards. Inside, the traditional features may not be to everyone's taste, but if you ask us, the outside area is by far the home's biggest draw. From the dining terrace to the private swimming pool and garden, you'll have ample space to bask in the Portuguese sunshine and remote setting. A car is a necessity here, but the charming towns of Ponte de Lima and Viana do Castelo are both a short drive away.

Make the most of the Afife coastline from this luxurious villa and ensure the holiday of a lifetime. Nestled in a small village, and just a short drive from the jewel of Costa Verse, Viana do Castelo, this stunning villa sits in the verdant hills above the Atlantic Ocean. It’s a short distance to the powdery sands of Praia de Afife, the border between Spain’s Galicia, the adventure-packed rivers of the Rio Lima estuary and the countryside hiking trails in the Lima valley.

Inside, the space is dominated by an expansive, wooden-beamed living area where you’ll find an elegant dining table for sharing bacalhau fish stew dinners and a contemporary lounge boasting ambient lighting for cosy nights in sharing aperitifs. The sleek kitchen has plenty of prep space, courtesy of a glossy island, which keeps the space social. A second dining room leads off the kitchen and out onto the patio – we’ll be honest, this one’s our favourite – perfect for alfresco dinners together under pink-hued sunsets.

Staying outside, there are plenty of spaces for every member to unwind. The patio is decked out with lounge chairs, perfect for soaking up the sun before plunging into the pristine pool for a cooling dip. We have to say we think the garden is the ideal spot to begin mornings over fresh coffee and locally bought pastéis de nata and to end evenings with caipirinha cocktails under the starlit sky.

Situated near one of Portugal’s oldest towns, this home offers peace and tranquillity. There are plenty of grounds to explore, including a pond (our favourite area), mature woodland and numerous paths leading into the countryside. Alternatively, simply unwind next to the private pool or admire the enchanting garden views from the veranda of the main house and the cottage.

This place is ideal for a large group of friends or family – there’s a charming separate cottage with a twin bedroom and kitchenette too, which provides a perfect space for those in search of a tad more privacy. If you love traditional interiors, then you’re in luck – from the grandfather clock in the dining room to the farmhouse-style kitchen and antique beds, this home is full of old-world character.

Nestled in a wonderful rural landscape, there’s plenty to see and do. Ponte de Lima, one of Portugal’s most historic towns, with its ornate squares, cobbled alleyways, and vast riverside Monday market, is just 13 kilometres away. The country’s only national park, the mountainous nature reserve of Peneda Geres National Park, is just a forty-minute drive away and offers prehistoric remains and walking trails, as well as golden eagles, deer and wolves – oh my.

If you're looking for more, catch the daily ferry boat out to the ruins of the fort of Ínsua in a matter of minutes, or drive to the beaches and historic town of Viana do Castelo, just 35 kilometres away.

Your hosts have thought of everything here, from a ping-pong table downstairs to a food lift ready to cart your meals from one floor to the next. You can lounge about on the sofa with a book from the host's collection, play a board game around the table or retreat to the four cosy bedrooms for a good night's sleep. 

When you're ready to venture out, Moledo's expansive beach is only a few kilometres away. A hotspot for surfing, you'll love dipping your toes in the Atlantic and feeling the sand between your toes. Your host can also arrange various tours, wine-tasting experiences and private chefs specialising in traditional Portuguese dishes to make your stay here extra special.

We're utterly in love with this reimagined farmhouse-style property located just outside of the idyllic old fishing village of Esposende. There’s no price for guessing what the city of Porto is famous for. However, you may be surprised to find that this fortified wine begins its life far from the city, in the vineyards found upstream and on either side of the river Douro, and it’s here where you’ll find this eye-catching villa. Overlooking the slopes of Portugal’s wine region, this home boasts panoramic views that are almost impossible to tear your eyes away from. At sunset, make a beeline for the infinity pool that stretches out across the width of the house. There’s a second heated swimming pool to the side, best reached through the open-plan living and dining room. Take a dip beneath a starlit sky or sunbathe during the day. Floor-to-ceiling sliding doors and windows can be found from the kitchen to the three bedrooms, effortlessly bridging the indoors and outside. Sitting close to the point at which Trás-os-Montes crosses over to the famed Alto-Douro wine region, this nine-hectare oak forest was abandoned in the middle of the 20th century and mother nature allowed to run her course. That is until 2010 when the farmhouse hidden away on the site was almost completely reconstructed into this incredible holiday home.

There are a few stone walls and wooden beams that hark back to this history, but otherwise, it's a strikingly modern affair, with a stylish collection of artwork, decorative items and furnishings waiting to be discovered throughout the space. There are so many aspects you're sure to be enamoured by as you take a tour, from the minimalist kitchen to the freestanding tub in the master bathroom.

That's not to forget the fabulous amenities here, either. If you're after a dose of relaxation, you're in luck – not only is there an indoor swimming pool, there's a sauna and Jacuzzi to retire to afterwards. There's also a fair bit of outside space for making the most of sunny weather, including a terrace with seating.

Plus, there's a whole range of distractions that lie nearby, too. Parque Natural do Alvão is a short drive away if you're ever in the mood for long rambles through scenic Portuguese countryside, while there are a number of towns close by – Vila Real and Régua among them – in which you can get acquainted with the region's rich gastronomic traditions.
