This fun desert home conjures up a mix of vintage hippy culture and the modern Boho chic style. Renovated and enlarged from a late-1950s villa, this place has a history. It was built when Landers and its Mojave Desert setting first became a place of pilgrimage for the original hippies. Inside, there's a welcoming, open-plan feel with an eclectic collection of decorative odds and ends. This is desert living, so outside there's the firepit table with distant mountain views, a barbecue grill and a traditional cowboy tub for getting clean in the open air. For a town of just 2,000 people, there’s plenty of things to do nearby. Try sonic healing sessions at the circular Integratron or marvel at the Giant Rock – a seven-storey-high boulder. Drink local brews from the Landers Brewing Company, explore Joshua Tree National Park and do some next-level stargazing.

The highlight of this home is, of course, soaking in the granite bathtub with water supplied from the mineral-rich hot spring. Take this moment to absorb the water's healing properties and nourish your body. Staying here is also about spending days and nights on the porch, breathing in the clean air with sunrise stretches, daily meditation and stargazing in the desert evening's clear night skies which – in our opinion – is some of the best stargazing on the planet. Inside the design is simple with hand-dyed indigo bedding and touches of local art – the sleek desert motif is clear, and a perfect complement to adventures and hikes in the natural landscape all around. Take the half-hour drive to Joshua Tree National Park, and don't forget to take your camera with you – we can vouch for the sublime vistas.

It's situated in the middle of California's wine country, making it easy to visit the nearby wineries to sample the local vintages. Located just a nine-minute walk from Pacifica State Beach and a six-minute stroll from Shelter Cove Beach – you'll be blown away by the bay's beauty, making it a popular spot for photographers. It's also a favourite amongst surfers, so whether you like to be part of the action or watch it all from a safe distance, Pacifica State Beach caters to all. There is a range of surf shops and some great local eateries on your doorstep too. For those who want to see more than just the coast, San Francisco is less than a twenty-five-minute drive away. When you're done exploring all that the San Francisco Peninsula has to offer, head home and rustle up a cioppino in the modern kitchen. We love the balcony with its views over the neighbourhood – perfect for a sundowner. The jagged coastline caters to a whole range of visitors, from surfers who like to ride the bay's impressive waves to photographers keen on catching the beautiful light. Or go for a hike on Shelter Cove Beach, a six-minute stroll away. There's an array of surf shops and some fantastic local eateries on your doorstep too. For a more action-packed day trip, San Francisco and all it has to offer is just a twenty-five-minute drive from this home. Chic, coastal-inspired interiors, polished concrete floors, and vast windows make it a delight to stay here. We love the vistas over Pedro Point from the living room and balcony – enjoy a glass of Californian rosé wine while enjoying the views. But the star of the show has to be the pool and gardens. With 360-degree mountain vistas, soaring palm trees, lush lawns, and hummingbirds busy going about their day, there is no better place to be. Start the day with a few lengths in the pool and soak in the spa, before settling down on one of the many sun decks to catch some rays. 

When it’s time to rustle up a meal, fire up the barbecue in the impressive outdoor dining area, while friends gather around the fire pit. Or let a private chef take over in the gourmet kitchen, complete with a wine fridge and built-in coffee maker to cover off all the essentials. And should you be tempted to stray from this desert retreat, you’ll find downtown Palm Springs a mere fifteen minutes drive away. Though why you’d ever want to leave is anyone’s guess.

For world-class hiking and biking, Sonoma Regional Park (11 mins drive) and Sugarloaf Ridge State Park (17 mins) aren’t much further away.

Seaside cabins don’t come much more charming than this. Nestled in the quiet neighbourhood of Cambria, and just steps away from the beach, you’ll find this gem of a home dating back to 1937. Recently renovated, inside it’s all fresh and light interiors, with just the right touch of coastal accents to nod to the coast. Wake up each morning to the sounds of distant waves in the serene crow’s nest bedroom upstairs, before opening the curtains to reveal a glimpse of the sea.  Outside, there’s a spacious yard hugging all sides of the home to give a feeling of privacy and offering plenty of entertaining spaces. Take your pick from two fire pit seating areas adorned with festoon lighting – there’s a spot in the secluded backyard or out front for sunset views. Foodies will love the Traeger barbeque, complete with a wifi app and meat probe that alerts you when your meat is cooked to perfection. We’re particularly fond of the quaint outdoor shower area. It’s perfect for washing off sandy feet from a day at the beach or cooling down after a hike in Fiscalini Ranch Preserve – both within walking distance. Or simply for showering under the stars as the fire pit blazes in the distance, just because you can.

Like a spaceship that's just landed in the desert, this home is an extraordinary stay. Surrounded by hundreds of windmills, the rugged San Jacinto mountains and expansive valley views, the most dominating element of this home is dome-shaped annexe with expansive windows offering unbeatable, panoramic views. Inside, the owners have gone to town with the otherworldly theme. In the kitchen, sleek metal kitchen countertops like the exterior of a rocket ship are paired back by warm brick walls. In the living room, egg shaped chairs sit opposite a honeycombed bookshelf, with a wood-and-metal floating spiral staircase that leads up to the loft bedroom. All three bedrooms have deluxe double beds, luxurious bathrooms with walk-in showers, and uninterrupted desert views. Joshua Tree National Park - and its miles of remote hiking routes - is at your fingertips, or if you're ready to re-enter reality, Downtown Palm Springs, with its glitzy shops and trendy restaurants, is a short drive away.

As soon as you step through the door of this renovated 1960s house, you know you’ve found something pretty special. With a dazzling desert setting and an interior that could grace the cover of a glossy magazine, it’s not your average home. The living space is centred around a vast sheepskin that’s like walking on a cloud, and the full width glass doors pull back completely, blurring the line between inside and out. And you’ll definitely want to spend lots of time outside – the views are spectacular. Days here pass by like a dream, hiking through the rugged landscapes of Joshua Tree National Park, or exploring the artsy town, before coming back to your oasis for a soak in the saltwater hot tub.
