Steps away from the beach, this home has large living room windows that look out onto the deep blue Pacific Ocean. Take a seat with a good book and soak in the view, or go down to the second and third floor balconies for some fresh sea air with your morning coffee. 

We love how the cutouts in the kitchen blend the space together with the living room for a more social atmosphere. Unwind after sandy days in the comfortable bedroom, and wash up in the pastel blue tiled bathroom. You’ll be in a great location for exploring this wonderful stretch of coast – the Cabrillo Marine Aquarium is just a four-minute walk, while the sprawling Angel Gate Park is only fourteen minutes away. By car, you can visit Long Beach in fifteen minutes or Redondo Beach in thirty. And if you’d like to explore the beautiful island of Catalina, San Pedro has a ferry station just ten minutes away by car from home.

Full of all the mod cons needed for a comfortable stay in California, with its black leather sofa and cosy stone hearth fireplace, the space feels welcoming and well looked after. And for those keeping one eye on work during their trip, you'll notice the sleek study area, complete with a glass-topped table and a bright outlook by the window. While the modern tones and bold decor adds a level of comfort and style, the real star of the show is the outside space. We can think of nothing better than warmer evenings spent out here with friends and family, soaking up the last of the stubborn Cali sunshine with alfresco drinks in hand. The garage parking at this home makes it very easy to head down to the beach and enjoy long fun-filled days spent building sandcastles with the kids, swimming in the sea and frisbee throwing on the sand. In fact, there's up to five beaches under a five-mile radius from your home, meaning you can mix up your chosen tanning spot each day. And after all the lounging around on the coast, you may be in need of a culture fix – if so, The Museum of Latin American Art is a short twelve-minute stroll from your front door.

From the grey timber exterior to the walls painted in shades of ocean blue, this is a home where colour is used to create a certain atmosphere. Step through the front door and you can't help but feel calmer than you did just moments before. The house plant collection contributes to this zen feeling, as does the copious amounts of natural light coming in through the large living room window, which dances pleasingly off the wooden floor. The peaceful ambience is in keeping with the Long Beach location, which is a lot more laid-back than neighbouring Los Angeles. Here, you can get to the eponymous beach in twenty-five minutes, but Downtown LA is only forty-five minutes away in the car if you want to up the ante at any point.

There are so many fantastic, shared amenities to mention at this home’s 100-plus acre oceanfront resort, that we could be here for some time. Facilities include several pools, a spa and fitness centre, beach access, a golf course and more (fees apply). What about the villa itself? We love the private patio overlooking the ocean and golf course and you’ll also find a hot tub too. A couple of things to mention – one bedroom can only be accessed via the courtyard. And at full capacity, two guests will be sleeping on a sofa bed in the family room. The location, we have to say, is great – Los Angeles and many other attractions are within driving distance.

Using the statement wall in there as a backdrop for family holiday photos is one of the features we love most about it, but we can’t deny that the outdoor space is our absolute favourite. 

Find yourself out by the pool after a quick breakfast and bask in the sun as you catch up on podcasts in the sun lounger, or find shade under the gazebo or patio umbrella. Pour drinks, enjoy each other’s company, take a dip in the pool whenever you need cooling down, and allow yourself to unwind.

With its reclaimed wood floors, vaulted ceilings and soft tones, it's a stylish space made all the more inviting by its lounge area and luxury bathroom. Step outside and this balcony was made for peaceful morning coffees. Nearby, there are plenty of dining options on your doorstep, and from here it's easy to rent bikes and cruise the oceanfront bicycle path that stretches for miles. A sensational property located directly on Manhattan Beach, this head-turning home is a designer's dream. The cutting-edge glass exterior contrasts nicely with the wood and stone elements inside, which serve to connect you to the natural beauty on show through the double-height floor-to-ceiling windows. The secluded bedrooms allow for a certain amount of privacy. However, it's worth noting that the third bedroom is accessed through a hatch in the ceiling of the second – which certainly makes the prospect of going to bed a lot more exciting for the kids. The communal areas are inviting and cosy and do everything possible to orientate you towards those incredible vistas. So grab a glass of wine and watch the waves roll in as the setting sun reflects off your sleek beach house.

This lovingly restored 1940s retreat has been a family home for almost three decades. Packed with intriguing artefacts from around the world, every inch is bursting with character and charm. The owner is also an interior designer and sculptor – make sure to play a tune on the upright piano, which is a relic from her childhood. Each bedroom is cosy and well-sized (particularly the main suite), while the many lounges – including an office space – ensure there's a quiet spot for everyone. We're also big fans of tropical terraces and patios. With Manhattan Beach and the Strand both within easy walking distance, it's no surprise we fell hook, line, and sinker.
