Smoked Brass is a bit of an all-around gem. Dating back to the 1920s, it's designed as a space to live in rather than an art installation to be admired as such. Sophisticated yet cosy interiors present a comfortable space that combines contemporary style with classic furnishings throughout the home. We particularly love the cottage-like grid windows that add a touch of the English countryside to this Californian mid-century home. With flora and fauna aplenty, the garden offers a sanctuary of peace and serenity and, importantly – privacy. And while pools aren't uncommon in these parts of the city, this one is particularly delightful. Spend your days sipping iced coffee on the day beds, with the option to take a relaxing dip, should the California sunshine with heat. The local area of Pasadena offers different prospects to some of L.A's glitzier areas as it is generally a much quieter and more residential area. However, with everything you need within walking distance (if not a quick drive out), this place serves as a dreamy 'escape' from the city while still only a half an hour drive away from Hollywood and Downtown L.A.

It's quite hard to find a home in Los Angeles where you don't have to rely on a car to get around. Luckily, Best Of Bastet is within walking distance to Gold Line Metro, which will quickly get you to the beach. The surrounding area is also walkable – the tourists haven’t discovered Highland Park yet, and there are all sorts of cafes, restaurants, and independent shops (including several record stores) for you to explore. While the outsides of this home look unassuming, the interior has been designed with an eye for minimalism. The home isn't bare, but rather balanced with sleek wishbone chairs and other Scandi-inspired furniture, which leaves plenty of space for plants. There's a neatly paved terrace right outside where you can chill out and get the fire pit going, as well as a bright living room where you can relax during the day. If you do end up purchasing vinyl during your stay, you'll get to listen to them before you get home too, as this home is equipped with a neat gramophone.

It's a fabulous location, with Echo Park just a five-minute drive away. The bedrooms are peaceful and elegant in their simplicity and the living area, open to the kitchen, is roomy enough for up to four. But it's the garden we're really here for. Powder pink and pretty much perfect, this stunning home in Atwater Village has been the star of many a design publication since it was completed. An architect-designed remodel of a war-era 'prefab' bungalow, its new lease of life has allowed its form to really shine, with contemporary styling that just begs to be photographed.  

Set on a quiet, leafy road, it sits within carefully landscaped gardens, where tropical planting creates a sense of privacy and a large deck gives you somewhere to hang out together in the sunshine. 

Inside, the sociable layout makes everyone feel right at home, with vaulted ceilings, a comfy seating area and huge sliding doors to the garden. The kitchen is stylish and unique, with everything you'll need for cooking at home, and you'll soon spot that painted MDF panels and built-in furniture are a bit of a theme here.

Our favourite room in the house, the master bedroom, is bright and spacious, with a big pivot door leading to a little lawned area outside. Elsewhere in the main house, there's a second bedroom with digital all-in-one gym equipment, two stylish bathrooms and a pretty nursery, while the guest house in the garden can be your fourth bedroom or maybe an office if you'll be working during your stay.

Just a short walk from some great places to eat and drink, this place is handy for hiking in the hills, visiting Los Angeles Zoo, Downtown LA, Silver Lake and much more, too. A bang-on-trend combination of vintage good looks, clever design and super smart technology (think lightning-fast broadband, an electric vehicle charger, multiple streaming channels and Bose surround sound) we think this home is sitting pretty – in pink.

Its immediate neighbourhood is on the gritty side, and you may be able to hear noise from the street from inside the home but it's a nice, well-priced base, with lots of natural light and high quality appliances.

Nestled behind a 1913 craftsman house, you'll find this sweet studio home. It's a serene space with crisp, white walls and wooden beams. The outside space is shaded by a ficus tree, and is the perfect spot in which to enjoy some peace and quiet away from the buzz of the city. Sit in one of the rocking chairs and enjoy a glass of wine and a game of chess as you watch the hummingbirds flit between the shrubs. 

When it comes to exploring LA, this home is in an excellent location. It's just one mile south of Hollywood, in the Larchmont neighbourhood, which is full of historic homes and independent businesses. Curio Montana used to be a mixed-use industrial space, and Kelly’s gone to some lengths to retain that character, while sprucing the place up at the same time. As a result, we end up with a combination of folk art, distressed surfaces, and sleek appliances. It isn’t huge, but it’s easily big enough, particularly as you can use the patio outside (along with any other residents). Highland Park isn’t as well known as the most famous neighbourhoods in the city, but its laidback atmosphere has led to its becoming a cultural focal point of northeast LA.

Combining the shell of an old industrial building with folk art and stylish mid-century modern furniture, this eclectic loft-style home provides the ideal base for a couple or solo traveller looking to be within easy reach of Los Angeles’ most exciting sights. Rustic charm meets snazzy sophistication in this open-plan space, with cool original features (think steel doors, beamed ceilings and concrete floors) giving it plenty of character. We love how the layout gives this home a real sense of largesse, while the soft furnishings and wooden accents lend it a sense of warmth and cosiness. The apartment is a joy to come home to after a day of sightseeing. Its most enviable feature is the verdant shared garden, full of native plants and a firepit to gather around on cooler nights. Climb a set of steps through lush gardens to this eccentric home overlooking Silver Lake, one of L.A’s trendiest neighbourhoods. But before you head inside, become acquainted with Yortoise the giant tortoise who lives in the undergrowth and Chouchou the fluffy cat who likes to doze in the sunshine. The terrace has a Moroccan-inspired seating area with barbecue, flourishing vegetable patch and a hammock amid the jungle-like vegetation. The interiors are a charming mix of homespun and stylish designs. A bright living area leads onto a balcony, offering unfettered views of the Griffith Observatory and beyond. Our favourite space was the master bedroom – we loved the cerulean blue feature wall and the direct access to the patio with its giant bird of paradise, variety of succulents and pomegranate tree where squirrels scurry and birds sing. On warm summer’s days, take a twenty-minute walk to the shores of Silver Lake Reservoir, followed by an ice-cold drink at the hip bars and cafes on Sunset Boulevard, a twenty-five-minute stroll from your home.
