When you have an ocean view at your disposal, the best homes really make the most of it and that's certainly true of this property overlooking the Malibu coastline. Big windows make the interior feel bright and airy, while there's also a gorgeous deck area from which to savour the panorama of endless blue. This space comes with a comfy lounge area arranged around a firepit and an alfresco dining setup complete with a barbecue, so guests really can spend each and every hour of the day breathing in the salty sea air. Just around the side of the home, there's a small green where you can practice your putting. Back inside, we also loved the Japanese-style round bathtub — ideal for washing off the sand after a day at the seaside. And you won't be short of options, with La Costa Beach only seven minutes' walk away. Even closer to the home — about a minute's walk, in fact — is Duke's bar and restaurant, which serves Hawaiian-inspired cuisine with similarly stunning ocean vistas.

When presented with a view of such beauty, the only response that can really do it justice is 'wow'. That was our reaction as we stood on one of the home's many balconies and gazed out at the endless Pacific Ocean. You don't even have to head outside to take in this stunning panorama, thanks to the huge floor-to-ceiling windows that take up most of the walls. With your attention naturally drawn away from the home, it might take you a moment before you can appreciate just how well the interior has been put together. The cleansing white living area and handsome wood-panelled kitchen are both boosted by a collection of impressive accoutrements, including an inbuilt Bose sound system, Miele cooking appliances and a Jacuzzi bathtub. A little more low-key but no less appreciated are three sea kayaks and fishing poles that are also available for guests to use. To reach the beach, all you have to do is descend the stairs, pass the home's deck with alfresco dining area and hey presto, you're there. Countless hours of fun await, whether you're atop the waves or out exploring Santa Monica, which is less than a quarter of an hour's drive away.

Radiating style, this architectural paradise is undoubtedly one of the more glamorous and unique homes in our Los Angeles edit. It's high above the Malibu surf, so you can soak up the sunshine while watching the changing moods of the Pacific. This home conquers indoor-outdoor living, with retracting glass doors opening up the interior to the elements, allowing you to feel the sea breeze while reading a good book from the floor-to-ceiling library. The open-concept kitchen, dining area and living room benefit from bespoke features like a marble fireplace, a dazzling chandelier, and an antique Asian wall screen. 

Beyond the luxurious home comforts, you'll find the local area to be full of life. Corral Beach only takes nine minutes to reach in the car and there are surfboards in the home that guests are free to borrow. High up on a bluff in Malibu with some of the best far-reaching views of Southern California is this estate perfect for an extravagant retreat or destination wedding. Aside from the endless indoor-outdoor spaces to entertain at this home, its major highlights for us were the two grand pianos and a fully equipped recording studio that are all perfect for a professional rock-star, talent in the making, or a simple music enthusiast who wants to soak up the California creative vibe. For a celebrity-style event, tents are situated nearest the sea on the home’s ten sweeping acres. If it’s just a luxurious Malibu experience you have in mind, the pool and other endless amenities are not too shabby. 

Pacifico

Overlooking the pristine (and private) Livingstone Beach, this charming oceanfront home boasts an unbeatable location. With its coastal mountains, unspoiled coves, sweeps of golden sand and legendary surfing, Malibu has long been a favoured celebrity haunt, and you can see why. From the moment you step through the front door, your gaze is immediately drawn to that unbroken view out over the mighty Pacific Ocean, so why hang art on the walls when it's competing with the best Mother Nature has to offer? 

On the other hand, suppose you can bring yourself to tear your eyes away and appreciate the little details. In that case, there are two floors with stunning marble worktops and natural wooden cabinets in the kitchens, stylish mid-century furniture in the living areas and beautiful, sculpted chairs around the dining table. The bedrooms are set back from the beach and equipped with large, comfortable beds and decorated in soothing tones. But, in our opinion, the undoubted stars of the show are the gorgeous seafront decks, where you can check the surf before paddling out. If you're lucky, you might even catch a glimpse of jumping pods of dolphins and breaching whales that call Malibu home.

We are in love with this incredible Malibu Beach home designed by American DJ Skrillex. It has the most awesome Pacific Ocean views. Set down a gated private driveway in an acre of gorgeous grounds, it offers seclusion,  yet it has easy access to the beach. Tall windows open to sublime ocean-facing terraces – relax in the Californian sun by the sparkling pool. Or hit the home gym, then challenge someone to a foosball or table tennis match in the games room. If that all sounds a bit too energetic, there's a movie theatre to chill out in.

Mix up a margarita in the outdoor bar as the sun sets and gather around the stylish fire pit. There's so much we love about this home. It's hard to choose one thing, but if pressed, it would be the master bedroom with its own private lush outdoor area with an alfresco hot tub and rain shower – the Bali vibe is utterly gorgeous. There's a private casita too for those wanting more privacy. 

If you can tear yourself away from this Malibu Oasis, County Line Beach is a five-minute stroll, while Zuma Beach is a fifteen-minute drive away.
