Contemporary coastal cool is the order of the day, with plenty of light wood, fresh blue furnishings and pristine white walls, all accentuated by the sunlight that pours in 342 days a year through large windows and retractable glass doors that look out over the ocean.

There's plenty of space for all the family, with large open living spaces, a stunning modern kitchen with eye-catching quartz worktops, a dedicated games room with a billiards table, plus a lovely office to make the idea of working while on holiday a little more palatable. 

Sleeping arrangements are taken care of across five spacious bedrooms. A large loft room packed with games and a console allows you to leave the kids to it as you enjoy a glass of something cold out on the covered terrace, or lay out on a lounger on the promontory pointing out to sea.

If the call of the ocean proves too much, you won't have to walk far to access Lost Winds beach below. With consistent surf, volleyball courts, and the opportunity to jog or cycle along the 2.6-mile beach trail, there's plenty on offer here. However, seasoned surfers might want to check out nearby breaks including Trestles, T Street and San Onofre. Lowers (at Trestles beach) is the best of the bunch and the home of high performance surfing. Sometimes it's best just to sit back and marvel at the pros.

After a day of adrenaline-pumping activity, cooking may well be the last thing on your mind. Handily, San Clemente is home to a wide array of restaurants serving everything from American comfort food, farm-to-table fare and creative Mexican classics washed down with a mescal.

This home’s prime location puts you a five-minute car ride from Paso Robles wine trail. Or, you can walk to Jack Creek Cellars, just three minutes across the street, for a glass or two with your date and not have to worry about the drive home.

There's not one thing about this fabulous home in the woods that we don't love. A renovated architectural gem dating from 1962, the A-frame cabin stands among the tall trees of Fern Valley, benefitting from a wilderness feel while being just a five-minute drive into the town of Idyllwild. 

Inside it's packed with all the traditional cabin features – there's plenty of timber, towering beams and a giant stone fireplace – but it's unmistakably retro in its design. Beautifully styled with impressive attention to detail, the home boasts a well-curated mix of folk art and mid-century modern furniture. We love the numerous sliding doors opening to the deck, making the most of indoor-outdoor living. 

The master bedroom is cosy and completely panelled in warm wood, and you can step outside from here too, while the characterful loft bedroom is perfect for children. Outside you'll spot a large, semi-sunken hot tub on the deck, and there are plenty of seats so you can breathe in the fresh forest air. By day, hikes and adventures await, while in the evenings you can play a few albums from your host's vinyl collection as the fire flickers away.

Faraway Tree

Hidden away among vineyards and rolling hillsides in southern California, this is an estate that's as picturesque as they come. The outside area has been designed to appreciate the gorgeous views and you can admire these from the comfort of the infinity pool, in the hot tub or sat around the barbecue and fire pit area. There's ample space for alfresco dining on the covered terrace, but there are also grassy areas to play outdoor games, like cornhole. Inside, further distractions await in the shape of the games room, which features ping-pong, foosball and pool. Though the location feels perfectly isolated, there's plenty to do nearby. The city of Temecula takes under twenty-five minutes to reach in the car and offers opportunities for winery tours, hot air balloon rides and dining in high-end restaurants. Similarly, the roaring waters of Ortega Falls are just a thirty-five-minute drive away.
