This fun desert home conjures up a mix of vintage hippy culture and the modern Boho chic style. Renovated and enlarged from a late-1950s villa, this place has a history. It was built when Landers and its Mojave Desert setting first became a place of pilgrimage for the original hippies. Inside, there's a welcoming, open-plan feel with an eclectic collection of decorative odds and ends. This is desert living, so outside there's the firepit table with distant mountain views, a barbecue grill and a traditional cowboy tub for getting clean in the open air. For a town of just 2,000 people, there’s plenty of things to do nearby. Try sonic healing sessions at the circular Integratron or marvel at the Giant Rock – a seven-storey-high boulder. Drink local brews from the Landers Brewing Company, explore Joshua Tree National Park and do some next-level stargazing.

Ventana Cove

Named the coolest stay in California by Condé Nast, there’s an otherworldly quality to this secluded desert home. Set on ten acres of wilderness in the Mojave Desert, the enchantment begins the moment you turn on to the five kilometre private dirt road. Maybe it’s the mystical theatre of boulders that surround the all-white structure, or perhaps it’s the clear blue of the vast sky overhead, but either way, it’s the kind of place you can never forget. We’d describe it as high design in the wild desert. There are floor-to-ceiling sliders in every room (apart from the bathrooms) framing magical views, and furniture by iconic designers like Christian Liagre as well as one-of-a-kind artworks and Moroccan rugs. While you’re just a short drive from the bars and shops of Pioneertown, we’ll wager that once this sanctuary has cast its spell, you’ll never want to leave. Think serious stargazing sessions through a telescope, showering by a boulder, and falling asleep under the desert sky with a crackling fireplace at your feet—the second bedroom is open to the elements, with no walls or ceiling. And it's packed with technology too. You can measure your energy consumption, change your light settings and set cooling and heating temperatures of the space. Wrapped in salvaged weathering steel and up-cycled details, it raises the bar on stylish, conscious travel.

Desert Saga

An architect's eye has been turned to this Yucca Valley getaway, which pops out of the desert in clean lines, stamped textiles, and potted plants. The home, which belongs to a local activist and artist, is an oasis of cool; white walls, hanging lights, and reclaimed wooden furniture are the name of the game here, while a monochrome, metro-tiled bathroom is perfect for soaking or scrolling up your Instagram feed. The real draw here, however, is the incredible location. When we say you're out in nature, we really mean it. Reached by a sandy dirt track, it feels as wild as the desert landscape that surrounds it. Relax in the cowboy-style tub during the day or explore the two acres of Joshua Tree forest or Joshua Tree National Park (a twenty-five-minute drive away), before setting up camp for the night. With little light pollution, the starry sky is clearer out here than ever – whether you're gathered around the fire pit, sat under the fairy light-strewn canopy or ogling constellations through the telescope, it's a sanctuary of peace, solitude and natural beauty. 

Palo Verde's Bloom

Moonstone Adobe

A hilltop cabin in a unique area of the desert, this place is nestled on its own between Pioneertown and Yucca Valley on what feels like the scenic drive through Joshua Tree National Park. The trees, rocks, and landscape just outside the doors are just as breathtaking as anything you would see in the park, except you have them all to yourself. 

There’s a wood-burning stove to keep you warm on those chill nights, while one of your musically talented friends can play a tune on the grand piano (though there’s also a Bluetooth sound system, for convenience). On the walls, you’ll find original art by the late Gerald Zeldin, and an interior so impressive it was featured in the NY Times fashion section. You can feel the history of this old mining cabin in the wood-beamed ceiling and clapboard (yet modern)  bathroom. Picture-frame windows let the sunlight stream into this boho-chic interior and let you gaze out over the endless desert before you.

This place is totally off-grid and once you’ve experienced the unique feeling of heating the outdoor hot tub with firewood as you gaze at the stars, there’s no going back.

Ranch Of The Rising Sun

Nestled in 2.5 acres, this haven welcomes you to rest, recharge and experience the magic of desert living. Inside, the rooms are styled with art and furnishings collected from travels across the world, plus the owners have taken care to ensure maximum comfort with memory foam mattresses, toiletries and a range of extra services – including a private chef and massage treatments. There’s also a swimming pool, hot tub and yoga studio – perfect for those in search of a meditative retreat. And when you’re looking to spread your wings, it’s just a short seven-minute drive into downtown Joshua Tree. 

The Desert Rose

Kick off your shoes at the front door of this beautiful desert sanctuary and leave them off for the duration of your stay. Here’s a place to unplug your phone and completely relax. The traditional Mediterranean-style house sits on an acre of private land, with a dreamy backdrop of bright blue skies and Joshua trees. Come morning, grab a yoga mat for a stretch at sunrise, then cradle your coffee while overlooking the garden (keep your eyes peeled for the rabbits and chipmunks that come to visit). Days are spent lounging on day beds, cooling off in the deep end of the pool, and gazing at the ever-changing colours of the surrounding mountains. As the sun falls, fire up the barbecue, before taking a post-supper dip in the jacuzzi or breaking out the movie projector for a vintage cinema-style experience in the living room. If you can tear yourself away from your own personal oasis, the spectacular Joshua Tree National Park is less than a ten-minute drive away while Yucca Valley is just a short eleven-minute drive from home. 

Desert Nomad

This small but perfectly formed cabin can be found in the heart of Yucca Valley on 2.5 acres of wilderness. The perfect base for a small family or two couples, it’s been thoughtfully decorated with a mid-century design meets boho vibe. We love the funky geometric tiles in the kitchen and the colourful rugs scattered throughout the home. Drive down the unmade dirt track to Pioneertown for a taste of the Wild West or head to Joshua Tree National Park for wild landscapes and stellar hiking opportunities. We can see ourselves relaxing on the canopied sun lounger with a glass of something cold in hand as the sun goes down. The stargazing in the hi-desert is something to write home about so after supper, just lie back and enjoy.
