We wouldn’t be surprised if the host of this century-old cottage was in fact a fairy godmother and the home itself were to turn back into a pumpkin at the stroke of midnight. There's a distinct fairytale feel to the interior, which is bursting with folkloric design, a whimsical colour scheme and charming architectural features — chandeliers hang from the ceiling and gilded mirror frames sit on the wall waiting to be asked who's the fairest of them all. The one-time hunting lodge is tucked away in the rollings hills of Topanga, and surrounded by lush woodland and majestic mountains, further adding to this most magical setting. Topanga State Park can be reached in five minutes' drive, while Las Tunas Beach only takes ten. There are outdoor adventures to be had without even leaving the home, however. Just step outside into the huge, multi-level garden and you'll find lots of pretty places to take a perch and a recently installed hot tub, as well as some friendly neighbours — the mini pigs. They're looked after twice a day by a caretaker, but you can feed them over their fence, too.  It’s not every day you come across such a special home, but for those who enjoy magic and fairytales, you'll find it completely spellbinding.

There's even a separate studio with a kitchen, living area and bedroom that's perfect for those craving a little extra privacy. Wake up each morning and watch the sunrise over the jaw-dropping landscape, then whip up a delicious breakfast in the modern kitchen, which has stainless steel countertops and plenty of culinary gear. Then, head outside and bask in the mountain breeze with a dip in the infinity pool, or just lounge on the deck chairs with a chilled drink in hand and admire the stunning surroundings. Within twenty-four minutes from home, you can either hike or hop on a 4x4 through the ranch, spotting animals, learning about the history of the vineyards and of course, tasting lots of wine.

As the ocean runs along the coast by Malibu and Pacific Palisades, your waterside retreat is right on the border between the two. Stepping into your apartment, the sleek, modern interiors offer white as the main colour – a perfect blank canvas for the windows and doors opening up to views of the sapphire waters of the Pacific Ocean, and blue Californian skies. Whether you’re relaxing on the L-shaped sofa inside, or savouring a glass of organic chardonnay on the private balcony, coastal scenery comes as standard. Thanks to touches like sliding glass doors, huge mirrors, and Starck ghost chairs in the dining area, this home feels wonderfully spacious and bright. It's practically next door to the Getty Villa, and it's just a ten-minute walk down to Ratner Beach and a short car ride to the iconic Santa Monica Pier – doesn't get much better than that. 

Inside, floor-to-ceiling windows show off the sweeping scenery and rolling tides, while the breezy living space is perfect for socialising. Throw open the doors and you'll hear the waves crashing on the shore – it's the perfect soundtrack to your stay, whether you're lounging on the L-shaped sofa or tucking into a delicious meal around the dining table. The sleek, granite-topped kitchen has everything you need to cook up a delicious feast and the stylish bedrooms are ultra-comfortable. That said, our favourite spot to relax has to be the balcony. Savour your morning cup of coffee with a side of fresh sea air, then, in the evenings, pull up a chair, pour yourself a glass of wine, and enjoy a front-row seat to some truly incredible sunsets on the water. If you ask us, this is California living at its finest.

Just six minutes away, Ratner Beach is a perfect spot for a sunrise swim. Grab a beach towel (kindly provided by your host) and head to the shores. Palisades Village is just over ten minutes by car, where you’ll find restaurants and boutiques. Or take a fifteen-minute ride to Santa Monica Pier to enjoy the funfair by day, and a corn dog under the glow of neon lights by night.

One of only six homes located directly next to the Malibu Pier, this beach cottage boasts a dream location. With direct access to the 21-mile stretch of white sand and heaps of deck space, you’ll likely spend most of your time outside, making use of the stand-up paddleboards and surfboards provided. Your host can arrange surfing lessons, bike and kayak rentals, and sailing excursions. There’s also a board rack, beach shower, and an indoor-outdoor bar. The cottage is tranquil, with ocean views enjoyed from almost every angle. Peaceful and pretty, this Malibu home is memorable for all the right reasons.

When you have an ocean view at your disposal, the best homes really make the most of it and that's certainly true of this property overlooking the Malibu coastline. Big windows make the interior feel bright and airy, while there's also a gorgeous deck area from which to savour the panorama of endless blue. This space comes with a comfy lounge area arranged around a firepit and an alfresco dining setup complete with a barbecue, so guests really can spend each and every hour of the day breathing in the salty sea air. Just around the side of the home, there's a small green where you can practice your putting. Back inside, we also loved the Japanese-style round bathtub — ideal for washing off the sand after a day at the seaside. And you won't be short of options, with La Costa Beach only seven minutes' walk away. Even closer to the home — about a minute's walk, in fact — is Duke's bar and restaurant, which serves Hawaiian-inspired cuisine with similarly stunning ocean vistas.

When presented with a view of such beauty, the only response that can really do it justice is 'wow'. That was our reaction as we stood on one of the home's many balconies and gazed out at the endless Pacific Ocean. You don't even have to head outside to take in this stunning panorama, thanks to the huge floor-to-ceiling windows that take up most of the walls. With your attention naturally drawn away from the home, it might take you a moment before you can appreciate just how well the interior has been put together. The cleansing white living area and handsome wood-panelled kitchen are both boosted by a collection of impressive accoutrements, including an inbuilt Bose sound system, Miele cooking appliances and a Jacuzzi bathtub. A little more low-key but no less appreciated are three sea kayaks and fishing poles that are also available for guests to use. To reach the beach, all you have to do is descend the stairs, pass the home's deck with alfresco dining area and hey presto, you're there. Countless hours of fun await, whether you're atop the waves or out exploring Santa Monica, which is less than a quarter of an hour's drive away.

And of course, Malibu Beach is just steps away. This home is located in south Malibu close to some excellent restaurants, shops and attractions. Other places of interest include Santa Monica, The Palisades, Topanga Canyon, and Venice Beach. But will you want to leave this wonderful spot?
