We could certainly tell on viewing that this apartment is owned by a creative director and designer. Designed by a local architect to bring the calming presence of nature into the home, this pocket of tranquillity will knock your fluffy white socks off. Stepping in to look around at the decor, you'll find plenty of light wood furnishings and wood-slatted blinds, vibrant pops of colour, tasteful artwork and playful cloud-shaped cushions that we really loved. It's quiet, understated, and extremely functional. Enjoy a good book in the breathable and refreshing living space made of natural materials and traditional craftsmanship. Take a long soak in the stone and wood bathroom, whip up a few lite bites in the pristine island kitchen, or pen your thoughts at the antique public library desk – whatever you do around this peaceful apartment, you'll be perfectly at ease. Out back there is even a small terrace for some fresh air, enclosed by leafy trees for a naturally private space. The neighbourhood is authentically residential Brooklyn, lined with trees and townhouses with their iconic stoops. Inside, the spacious apartment blends original nineteenth-century features and modern finishes offering a breathtaking fusion of styles. An open-plan living room/kitchen provides direct access to the outdoors via a balcony, alongside expansive views over downtown. So there's plenty of space to come together and socialise, whether you're stretched out on the sofa or preparing dinner in the handcrafted kitchen. 

Elsewhere, the bedrooms offer a haven of zen-like calm in the middle of Manhattan, with walk-in wardrobes and a Carrara marble en-suite off the main bedroom, adding a touch of luxury. Head upstairs, and you'll uncover a rooftop terrace that offers direct southern vistas over Washington Square Park, MacDougal Alley and the Empire State Building. 

Down at street level, the delights of Greenwich Village await. Undoubtedly Manhattan's most charming neighbourhood, it's attracted the city's quirky and creative types since the sixties. We love this stylish home's location in hip Tribeca, a neighbourhood known for its cobblestone streets lined with fashionable boutiques and chic restaurants. Chinatown is a twenty-minute walk or eight-minute ride, while the One World Trade Centre is eight minutes on foot. The iconic Empire State building is a fifteen-minute drive (just over twenty minutes on the bicycles your lovely host Yvonne provides), or if you fancy some green space, Washington Market Park is a mere two-minute stroll.

Back at this apartment, head up to the gorgeous, private roof terrace and take in the views over the Freedom Tower. Inside, textural 3D artworks adorn the walls, and dark oak floors are enlivened with colourful rugs and furnishings. For the kids, there's a fantastic play area with plenty of toys, books and games. There's a home cinema set up too. Our favourite feature, though, has to be the swing in the living area – so random and yet so right. This playful home is perfect for a family.

Small but stylish, this apartment is perfect for a solo traveller. It may be pocket-sized, but the design makes the most of the space. There's a small desk if you're in town on business, a compact kitchenette ideal for post-adventure snacks, and a quaint bedroom where you can relax after sightseeing around The Big Apple. Speaking of, you'll be in the trendy Lower East Side, a short stroll away from multiple subway stations and close to great bars and restaurants. This is a walk-up apartment, though, so climbing stairs is necessary.

From the moment you step inside this New York loft apartment, you can tell the owners are an artist and a chef. The huge, open living area has a gourmet-level kitchen and light floods in from a wall of windows, plus there's an incredible art and design collection. One bedroom is a little small but both are perfectly comfortable and the vast loft-style living area makes up for it. You’re in the heart of Tribeca here where the movie-set-like cast iron loft buildings are home to endless restaurants, bars and even food markets. Plus, the Lower East Side is right next door.

Located on a beautiful tree-lined street in the heart of the Clinton Hill neighbourhood in Brooklyn, this characterful duplex is situated on the upper three floors of an original Brownstone. It's stylishly decorated throughout, and we love the plentiful period details, the sash windows, attractive fireplace and exposed brick walls. There might be quite a few stairs to contend with but other than that this warm and welcoming home is hard to fault. Lovely terrace too!

Downing Townhouse

Located just off Stuyvesant Square Park, this practical apartment is surrounded by peaceful open spaces all while placing you in the heart of nonstop NYC. You're also a short walk from leafy Union Square, with plenty of casual eateries and bars nearby. Back home, the space is bright and comfortable with the large windows framing pleasant green views. While there's no desk here, the dining table doubles up as a laptop-friendly workspace for those in the city on business. 

Sweet Lorraine

This apartment is ideally suited to those looking to drop their bags and head out from the get-go. Its major draw is the fabulous location, placing you in the thick of NYC. Just a short walk away you'll reach the iconic Flatiron Building, the Empire State Building, and Union Square – though this does mean that some noise should be expected. Inside, it's surprisingly spacious for a studio flat, with a kitchen and dining area tucked neatly around the corner. There's a sofa bed for flexible sleeping, but we only recommend this for younger children. 

The Artful Zen

While this home may be modest in square footage, it sure is mighty. Packing a punch in both convenience and amenities, a solo traveller or couple will be very happy here. With an impressive private terrace – that's almost as big as the home itself – you can thoroughly enjoy some downtime after a busy day with an aperitif under the stars. When you do find yourself at home, there's a comfortable sofa, writing desk and kitted-out kitchen complete with washer and dryer – a rarity in an NYC studio – so you can show up and start living as soon as you arrive. And did we mention that it's only a ten-minute walk to the Flatiron building? Continue for ten minutes more and you’ll reach the Empire State, the Morgan Library and Museum and the tucked away barbecue joints of bustling Koreatown.

Huge windows and 14-foot ceilings mean that it’s a bright and welcoming home, with an open-plan living and dining space that’s sure to impress even the most discerning travellers. The chef’s kitchen will delight gastronomes – though there are plenty of restaurants, bars and coffee shops nearby if you prefer to leave the cooking to the professionals. This comfortable and well-equipped home is an excellent base, whether you’re in NYC for business or leisure. There’s even a convenient desk for those needing to work during their stay.

When you hear ‘Williamsburg’ this is what you picture. Exposed brick walls, eclectic style… this apartment has it all. The fifth-floor walk-up is as quintessentially Williamsburg as they come, with quirky touches from the artist owner dotted all around. A twelve-seat farmhouse-style table takes centre-stage, with a charming selection of mismatched chairs and cushions – if you want somewhere to gather with friends, you won’t find better than this. 

The apartment is right at the heart of Williamsburg, with bars, restaurants and cafes in abundance. Grand Ferry Park is a four-minute walk away, so you can easily get your fix of the Great Outdoors. It takes just ten minutes by car to reach the Lower East Side, so you can take in the views from Battery Park before strolling to Chinatown for lunch. 

After busy days seeing the sights and soaking up the atmosphere of NYC and the boroughs, returning to this apartment feels like a real treat. Sip a glass of wine while watching the sun set from the bedroom window, then settle in for a comfortable night’s sleep. You’ll wish you were staying longer.

Merging comfortable living with statement design pieces, it’s easy to see that Tea Tree Hall has been curated with love and care (the host’s own photography and artwork decorate the walls, for example). Split across two floors, there is plenty of space for guests to spread out. The neighbourhood is very much in the grips of gentrification, but Tea Tree Hall is situated on a quiet block in the historic part of Bed-Stuy, and if you visit in summer you’ll find locals hosting street parties and inviting friends and family around for a barbecue.

Give East Village living a whirl at this smart townhouse set within walking distance to the chilled-out cafes and vibey music venues of the Lower East Side. Set out across three floors –⁠ there’s plenty of space for you to all spill out here, and the dedicated desks are handy should you need a quiet place to work. With no private parking to speak of, you’re best off sticking to the subway – just a four-minute walk from your door. Or, if time is on your side, hit the streets – there's no better way to take in this happening city.

Fabulous for family reunions or large group gatherings, this four-story Brooklyn townhouse is a fantastic choice that sleeps up to fifteen guests. Originally built in 1887, many of its original features have been beautifully preserved and you'll be spoiled with choice on where to sleep and socialise - in the chef's kitchen, or the private garden or should you wish to explore, you're moments from the Barclay Centre and the shops and cafes of Prospect Heights.

Location is everything here! Situated on a really charming street in Greenwich Village, The Itty-Bitty is perfectly positioned to some of the city's best restaurants and bars. This is a 300-square foot walk-up, but so long as you don't intend to do some serious cooking or massively spread out, this cosy apartment will do just the trick. 


The Itty-Bitty

Experience one of New York's trendiest areas from this sleek apartment nestled in the heart of Greenwich Village. You'll be within easy reach of Union Square market, with hip eateries and bars nearby. For those on a sightseeing trip, popular spots such as Flatiron Building, the Empire State Building and Madison Square Garden are all a short walk away. With a well-equipped kitchen and dining table there's potential for eating in, while the laptop-friendly desk serves as a nice space for working remotely – though some street noise should be expected. 

Manhattan's Calling

Located on a charming cobblestone street in the South Street Seaport and built in 1793, this lovely, European-inspired loft was once an ice house. Sparely furnished and set across two floors with an intentional open-plan living space, the easy flow between rooms is freeing. Both levels boast wood-beamed ceilings and original artwork created by the host himself. While this isn't the most luxurious home on our books, it's cosy and bright, a fluid mix of rustic and modern.

This three-storey Brooklyn townhouse is nestled in a vibrant and walkable neighbourhood. At full capacity, one guest will sleep on the sofa bed in one of the two colourful living rooms, and parties strictly aren't allowed here. With a projector in one of the living rooms, a wine bar in the kitchen, space for alfresco dining and Sonos throughout the house, it's ideal for large groups who want to feel right at home. We think it's especially great for families – the fifth bedroom has a cot for little ones, and a range of items are available for baby-proofing the home, from table corner guards to plug socket covers.

Brooklyn, Brooklyn

This charming duplex lies in Manhattan's West Village. Spread over multiple levels with the kitchen up on the mezzanine, groups will have plenty of space here, though you'll need to climb a lot of stairs. If you're looking for a home base while working remotely, you'll find computer equipment and standing desks to maximise productivity. The private garden is spread over two tiers and is equipped for barbecues, with outdoor seating and sun loungers. While children and little ones aren't permitted, we think friend groups will love it here thanks to its proximity to bars, restaurants and shops.

Madison Square South

Over in Carroll Gardens, we were taken aback by the attention to detail that has gone into designing this nineteenth-century brick home. There's a strong cohesion between the modern furnishings, from the transparent dining set and bold pieces of artwork to the statement lighting fixtures hanging from the ceiling. The black kitchen is relatively simple in comparison, but no less stylish. The overall effect is helped by the fact that it's an innately bright space thanks to the large windows letting in copious amounts of natural light — this is seen best in the bay-style cove where the main table sits. The local neighbourhood has a strong Italian-American lineage and there are plenty of restaurants and cafes nearby where you can see this culture still thriving. The area is also rich with art galleries, with seven alone to be found within a fifteen-minute walk.

Snap Out Of It

Sitting in a beautiful brownstone, this Clinton Hill apartment is a sophisticated home in a cultural part of Brooklyn. It's in good shape with large windows welcoming lots of light and an open-concept kitchen perfect for socialising and cooking simultaneously. It's not the most luxurious home on our books, but comfortable and inviting for mature couples or a group of friends.

The rooftop may be the outstanding highlight of this deluxe apartment, but the interior has a lot to love too. It spans across two floors, offering wide space that is incredibly rare in the centre of the city. it's an open-plan social area that's perfect for chatting about your New York adventure.

With a well-equipped kitchen, breakfast bar and dining table, there's potential for eating in, but the cafes and restaurants lining the streets just outside your doorstep might convince you otherwise. Try a different one every day between visiting Rockefeller Park, Washington Square Park and China Town.  There's plenty else to see within walking distance, but the public transport links nearby can also get you to The Empire State Building or Manhattan Park in minutes.  That's a thumb's up on location – now throw in light-letting oversized windows, plenty of space and an office, and you're onto something.

Dive headfirst into the ultimate New York experience. This home has a chef's kitchen and a barbecue for meals on the private terrace, as well as an outdoor lounge for post-dinner drinks. Plus, with a Peloton bike and Lululemon Studio Workout Mirror, you'll find everything you need to stay on top of your workouts. Though the space feels calm, the city sounds will gently remind you that you're in the heart of the Big Apple. Just outside, the galleries and restaurants of Union Square and NoHo are waiting to be explored. While the location is this home's biggest attraction, its clean white interiors and studio layout invite guests to catch some respite with ease and comfort between activities from day through to night – you are in the city that never sleeps after all. Located just down the road from the Tenement Museum, the apartment sits in one of New York's most historic (and most authentic) neighbourhoods. The Lower East Side is known for its careful balance of grunge and chic, so if you're after a true New York experience (in terms of space as well), this is a great choice in an even better location. And since you’re so close to some of the best boutique shops, restaurants and bars in the city, chances are you’re likely to spend more time out than in, which makes this the perfect place to come back to after a busy day.

If you want to head outside of Lower Manhattan, Bleecker Street subway station is a two-minute walk away.

This home doesn’t try too hard, and that’s part of its charm. The building is almost a hundred years old, and as it used to be a tenement block, there would have been four or five places in the space that this roomy home now takes up. The living area benefits from large windows and tonnes of natural light, making the plush grey sectional a lovely spot to spend the afternoon reading or napping. Of course, if you have work to do instead, the corner desk is all set up for hitting the ground running. Prepare an elaborate feast in the huge kitchen (massive by New York standards) and enjoy it at the elegant dining table. There’s lots of exciting artwork (and taxidermy) around, contributing to the home’s quirky personality, plus two newly renovated bathrooms - no morning queues here. When you’re ready to explore, you’ll be deep in the East Village, with endless options for good, hip restaurants and watering holes that range from dive bars to artisanal cocktail destinations. Plus, you’re just a four-minute walk from Tompkins Square Park, where you can enjoy one of the city’s lovely green spaces.
