Built in 1800, Hitchbrook is a quintessential New England home. Surrounded by farmland and rolling hills, this home is a private getaway for those looking for a pastoral retreat. Think rustic but sophisticated; evenings in front of fireplace or relaxing in the den playing games and singing-along to the piano. There are some great hikes nearby – the hills of Hitchcock Corners and across from Mill Brook are wonderful for walking. For the cyclists, there are plenty of bike trails to get stuck into. We’d recommend picking up some supplies from the neighbouring villages of Millbrook and Lakeville, and crossing the border into upstate New York for a picnic.

Set between the Hudson River and the Catskill Mountains, this spectacular 18th-century farmhouse is full of upstate New York charm. Nestled in 35 acres of secluded woodland, the house is a breath of fresh air less than two hours’ drive from the hustle and bustle of Manhattan. Step inside and you will instantly notice the owners’ keen aesthetic eye and attention to detail. Each room is bursting with character, and full of antique furniture, contemporary art, and vintage trinkets.  

The distinctive living room has a large wood burning fireplace and plenty of games for the kids. There is also a sun room which is perfect for relaxing in with a book. The farmhouse kitchen is well equipped with a range of appliances and cooking essentials. Upstairs, the palatial main suite comes with an office for remote working, a living area with its own fireplace and coffee station, and a claw-footed bathtub in the bathroom. The second and third bedroom have their own unique charm, and there is also a junior bedroom with plenty of toys and books for the little ones.

Outside, there is plenty to do and see. You can pick apples in autumn from your woodland (there are wellies at the house if it’s muddy!), go skiing and sledding in winter, or follow one of the nature trails leading to the creek. The village of Saugerties is a six-minute drive away, where you’ll find a grocery store, a farmer’s market and some laid back restaurants.

This home sits pretty as an English manor in the countryside of upstate New York, a ten-minute drive from the picturesque town of Pawling. Grecian-style columns greet you on arrival and the striking white facade glows against the verdant green gardens – it sits on 18 acres of land. The gardens are studded with ancient oak trees between perfectly manicured lawns and those that enjoy their privacy can opt to stay in the separate cottage in the grounds.

Dating back to 1840, the interior is an homage to elegance and eloquence. The main lounge, with its big Georgian windows and grand piano, looks out over the gardens. Then there are two further living areas – the garden room with a traditional old fireplace and a library lined with towering bookcases. The kitchen looks as though scullery maids still bustle through, with its hanging pots and farmhouse charm. Though all the appliances are state-of-the-art modern. The huge dining room features a bay window overlooking the gardens and a brick fireplace for chilly evenings.

Make the most of the New York state countryside from this home in Amenia, which is within driving distance of some excellent hikes, such as Macedonia Brook State Park (twenty minutes in the car). It’s also only thirty minutes from the Catamount ski resort, meaning there’s plenty on offer for active guests. Or watch a movie at the drive-in cinema, a two-minute ride away. Back at this home itself, you’ll find a stylish space to return to after a day of exploring the surrounding area. Whether you’re sitting around the fire pit in the yard, lounging on the sofa as a group or enjoying a family meal, the spacious home is ideal for socialising. We love the vintage pieces offering a nod to the area’s agricultural roots. What’s more, there's two laptop-friendly workspaces, making it easy to work from home.

Originally built in the 1870s, this farmhouse has been added to over time to create a sociable family home. This riverfront home is the kind of getaway we dream of every day. The infinity pool and views of the Hudson River are magnificent – just imagine how calming it is to wake up to views of this calibre every day. The screened porch was extremely inviting, it’s the kind of place that inspires you to slow down. While there’s a lot to love about this home, we couldn’t get enough of the garden – manicured and green, it also boasts an infinity pool.

This home offers a one-of-a-kind stay – spend your mornings in the fresh air helping the hosts tend to the farm animals in the tranquil setting to feel at one with nature – from feeding chickens and collecting eggs to brushing the horses and rooster calls here and there, but it's all part of the experience.

The home itself is chic and stylish, yet homey. Mornings are best spent sipping coffee on your patio while admiring the mountain and pasture vistas of your host's Texas longhorn cattle and horses. The living area is accented with slate grey throughout, while the brown provides an earthy sense to make you feel even more connected to your environment, and is ideal for cosying up after a long day of wandering through the unending greenery. We love that the second bedroom has an art studio for letting your creativity flow, where you can paint a stunning picture of the grounds you're staying on, as well as skylights, so you can fall asleep beneath the stars.

When you want to splash around in the sea, take a twenty-minute trip to Misquamicut State Beach, fantastic for the kids to spend a day at the beach while you sit back and relax. Alternatively, drive twenty minutes to the beautiful seaport village of Mystic and explore the foodie haven featuring the area's local meats, organic produce and seafood for a tantalising supper. Stop by Jonathan Edwards winery on the way to pick up a bottle of Pinot Grigio to enjoy back at the house around the fire pit with blankets wrapped around, or check out the dedicated bar area in the living room and craft your own cocktails. There's plenty of North Stonington's rich agricultural heritage to explore nearby, including cattle ranches, organic farms and vineyards (fifteen minutes away by car).

We love the huge, sociable sofa in the living room and the first-floor sun terrace in particular but nothing beats the location of this place. Set within an acre of lush green grounds, this seriously charming home is just a twenty-minute drive from the centre of Sag Harbour - undoubtedly one of New York State's best-kept secrets. This centuries-old seaside village may be known as one of the most family-friendly places in the Hamptons, but its strictly adults-only activities include a visit to the nearby Wölffer Estate vineyards to sample their famed rosé cider.
