Built in 1800, Hitchbrook is a quintessential New England home. Surrounded by farmland and rolling hills, this home is a private getaway for those looking for a pastoral retreat. Think rustic but sophisticated; evenings in front of fireplace or relaxing in the den playing games and singing-along to the piano. There are some great hikes nearby – the hills of Hitchcock Corners and across from Mill Brook are wonderful for walking. For the cyclists, there are plenty of bike trails to get stuck into. We’d recommend picking up some supplies from the neighbouring villages of Millbrook and Lakeville, and crossing the border into upstate New York for a picnic.

This home sits pretty as an English manor in the countryside of upstate New York, a ten-minute drive from the picturesque town of Pawling. Grecian-style columns greet you on arrival and the striking white facade glows against the verdant green gardens – it sits on 18 acres of land. The gardens are studded with ancient oak trees between perfectly manicured lawns and those that enjoy their privacy can opt to stay in the separate cottage in the grounds.

Dating back to 1840, the interior is an homage to elegance and eloquence. The main lounge, with its big Georgian windows and grand piano, looks out over the gardens. Then there are two further living areas – the garden room with a traditional old fireplace and a library lined with towering bookcases. The kitchen looks as though scullery maids still bustle through, with its hanging pots and farmhouse charm. Though all the appliances are state-of-the-art modern. The huge dining room features a bay window overlooking the gardens and a brick fireplace for chilly evenings.

Make the most of the New York state countryside from this home in Amenia, which is within driving distance of some excellent hikes, such as Macedonia Brook State Park (twenty minutes in the car). Back at this home itself, you’ll find a stylish space to return to after a day of exploring the surrounding area. Set between the Hudson River and the Catskill Mountains, this spectacular 18th-century farmhouse is full of upstate New York charm. Nestled in 35 acres of secluded woodland, the house is a breath of fresh air less than two hours’ drive from the hustle and bustle of Manhattan. Step inside and you will instantly notice the owners’ keen aesthetic eye and attention to detail. Each room is bursting with character, and full of antique furniture, contemporary art, and vintage trinkets.  

The distinctive living room has a large wood burning fireplace and plenty of games for the kids. There is also a sun room which is perfect for relaxing in with a book. The farmhouse kitchen is well equipped with a range of appliances and cooking essentials. Upstairs, the palatial main suite comes with an office for remote working, a living area with its own fireplace and coffee station, and a claw-footed bathtub in the bathroom. The second and third bedroom have their own unique charm, and there is also a junior bedroom with plenty of toys and books for the little ones.

Outside, there is plenty to do and see. You can pick apples in autumn from your woodland (there are wellies at the house if it’s muddy!), go skiing and sledding in winter, or follow one of the nature trails leading to the creek. The village of Saugerties is a six-minute drive away, where you’ll find a grocery store, a farmer’s market and some laid back restaurants.

Originally built in the 1870s, this farmhouse has been added to over time to create a sociable family home. Inside, original details such as exposed wooden beams and large sash windows are complemented by vintage furniture and traditional furnishings, while a bar is ideal for evening cocktails. But you’re likely to spend most of your time outside, exploring the ten acres of land, enjoying a drink outside on the deck, taking some time to reflect at the koi pond, or gathering around the outdoor fireplace after the sun goes down. There’s also a natural pool fed by a mountain stream, which you can swim in, surrounded by frogs, water lilies and other aquatic life.

This NYT-featured Catskills home is not quite the cabin it seems to be. What looks like a single storey home from one angle is actually built over a creekside slope, and we think it's one of the most interesting places we've seen for a peaceful stay in the woods. Floor-to-ceiling windows make full use of the region’s scenery, and sliding doors out onto a deck mean you can practically reach out and touch the pines – you can even listen to the rushing waters of the creek from here. Modern and stylish, the design here isn't trying to outshine the views, with wood floors, white walls and a Scandi feel to its furnishings. Two of the bedrooms are on the top floor and have such great views across the canopy you'll think you're staying in a treehouse, while immaculate bathrooms are outfitted with marble, lava stone and Italian Porcelanosa tiles. If you can drag yourself away, head out on hikes, explore the nearby farm shops, or book a meal at a local restaurant – there are several within a short drive. But we recommend making your way to the home's little campfire site, with some hot chocolate and marshmallows, for an evening you'll never forget.

On hot summer days, go for a swim in the crystal clear pool, or lie back with a book on a sun lounger nearby. As if this wasn't enough, it’s also perfectly located for making the most of Springs, with the sea just a five-minute cycle away, and coastal walks and surf beaches within easy reach. Not too far from the bright lights of New York City, this striking and stylish home sits near the beaches of Westhampton and among the protected marshlands of Long Island. The house itself is a modern twist on the traditional clapboard homes the area is famous for, with wraparound decks looking into the treetops to the rear and plenty of sliding doors allowing the indoors to seamlessly slip into the outdoor space. Downstairs, the living space is all about its designer leather sofa and chairs, as well as a large glass dining table. There's an excellent kitchen, with everything you'll need to cook at home, and even a den upstairs, complete with a sofa and office desk for working remotely. Outdoors, the huge deck is the star of the show, with seating areas, an alfresco dining spot, a cabana and a swimming pool. It's just a ten-minute drive to Westhampton beach to paddle in the Atlantic Ocean or visit one of the many excellent bars or restaurants.

There are a lot of adjectives we could throw at this home in The Berkshires; cosy, darling, divine. But none of them really do it justice. This place is made for taking it back to analogue and spending quality time together, around the stand-up piano, playing a board game in the sunny second sitting room, or pausing for a moment in the secret reading nook. A low, wooden ceiling, exposed brick wall and a wood-burning stove in the main lounge provide the ‘cosy’, while the plush velvet armchairs and antique dining table provide the ‘divine’. The bistro seating in the kitchen comes with a view of Butternut Mountain. Plus, there are several laptop-friendly desks designed for remote working and a dedicated office for video calls.

Outside, (well, almost outside) you’ve got an enclosed front porch with deck chairs for sunny days and a first-floor balcony begging for an evening tipple. In the surrounding greenery of the garden, let the kids run free on the lawn before gathering the group around the fire pit for a spot of stargazing at night.

You’re a five-minute drive from the artisan shops, local markets and restaurants of Great Barrington here, and skiing on Butternut Mountain is a short drive away too.

This riverfront home is the kind of getaway we dream of every day. The infinity pool and views of the Hudson River are magnificent – just imagine how calming it is to wake up to views of this calibre every day. Inside, it feels incredibly warm and welcoming, making it perfect for family gatherings and spending time with your loved ones. The screened porch was extremely inviting, it’s the kind of place that inspires you to slow down. While there’s a lot to love about this home, we couldn’t get enough of the garden – manicured and green, it also boasts an infinity pool.
