This centuries-old seaside village may be known as one of the most family-friendly places in the Hamptons, but its strictly adults-only activities include a visit to the nearby Wölffer Estate vineyards to sample their famed rosé cider. If hitting the many vintage stores in Sag Harbour isn’t on the cards, head out to explore the bay on one of the paddleboards or kayaks provided, by virtue of your own exclusive boat dock. Should that sound a little too energetic, you can also just take a dip in your private pool or luxuriate in the jacuzzi. Two main suites have parents and in-laws covered, the sunroom is an excellent spot to enjoy a cup of tea in the afternoons and the kitchen is a dream to cook in, with glossy tiles, high-end appliances and all the crockery you'll need.

Make your way outside and while away sunny days by the pool. Come evening, fire up the barbecue and tuck into an alfresco feast before gathering around the fire pit on the Adirondack chairs to watch the stars come out. The peaceful scenery is made even better by the excellent location. This home is tucked away on a tree-lined cul-de-sac that backs up to a nature preserve, with walking trails right on your doorstep. Just steps away from a private community beach, Borne Back was designed by its architect owner to provide a comfortable contemporary home in a perfectly quiet spot in the Hamptons. On a full acre plot next to Gardiner's Bay, it's surrounded by tall trees. Inside, it's modern, bright and relaxing, with subtle nods to its coastal location. Cook in the state-of-the-art kitchen, barbecue outside on the terrace or screen a movie on the home cinema setup. There's ample outdoor seating and a delightful, heated private pool to enjoy, and in the evenings, you could always treat your loved ones to a performance on the home's drumkit. We love the huge, sociable sofa in the living room and the first-floor sun terrace in particular but nothing beats the location of this place. A matter of metres from the beach and surrounded by quiet streets perfect for walks and bike rides, it's also within easy reach of several shops and restaurants.

Exploring East Hampton is a breeze at this coastal cottage. Both downtown and the beach are easily accessible by bike, and a coffee shop and seafood restaurant are just down the street. How's that for being in the centre of the action? Back home, the heated seasonal pool is a highlight, as is the sprawling garden – trust us, they'll be plenty of space for little ones to let off some steam. Fast wi-fi makes remote working easy, while complimentary access to Netflix, Hulu and Disney+ is perfect for family movie nights. The fourth bedroom – which doubles as an office –  has a single sofa bed, which we think is best for children.

Look out for artists, poets and musicians in the area around this home – it’s located in Springs, arguably the coolest town in the Hamptons. In the past, it’s played host to visionaries like Jackson Pollock and Lee Krasner, Willem de Kooning, Kurt Vonnegut, Nora Ephron and John Steinbeck. Luckily, the home’s bright, colourful design lives up to its surroundings, with patterned throws and bedspreads, quirky artwork and unique furniture. There are 1.5 acres of land to explore, with plenty of options for dining outside, whether you choose to relax with a barbecue under the wisteria or socialise on the patio. There’s also a separate barn in the garden, which can hold a further three people. On hot summer days, go for a swim in the pool, or lie back with a book on a sun lounger nearby. As if this weren’t enough, it’s also perfectly located for making the most of Springs, with the sea just a five-minute cycle away, and coastal walks and surf beaches within easy reach. On Saturdays, amble over to the Farmer’s Market to purchase fresh produce to whip up a feast.

Dating back to the eighteenth century, it’s safe to say that The Whaler’s Cottage is steeped in history. It has a wonderful garden with lots of room for relaxing, and the interiors are stunning. It’s easy to see that Tom and Max have an eye for design. Light-filled, minimalist, and incredibly elegant, it’s the kind of place you look forward to coming home after perusing Sag Harbor or walking by the beach. Speaking of sandy stretches, you’re close to the village centre, giving you easy access to several beaches, along with lots of wonderful restaurants, shops, and bars.

The Whaler's Cottage

You don't even need to step out of this home to take in the view of Sam’s Creek and Mecox Bay, with the sea stretching out in the distance. At this cottage by the water, built up on stilts, you’ll be able to watch it all from the comfort of home. But why would you when you can step out onto the deck, wander down to your private dock or walk to the beach in just minutes. Inside, the home has more than a touch of Bauhaus about it. Designed by the late Peter Blake, it's mainly monochrome interior contrasts against the greenery framed by floor-to-ceiling windows. It's a peaceful spot, with an open layout and an air of calm – especially in the bedrooms. Its raised position makes it a unique place to stay, and allows it to really make the most of its surroundings. Spend time lazing on hammocks under the cherry tree or take to the water on the home's canoe.

Minutes away from East Hampton Village, this beautiful Sag Harbor home is ideal for sun worshippers and golfers alike. The Sag Harbor Golf Course is a stone's throw, and Havens Beach, among others, is reachable by car in minutes. The third bedroom hosts four guests on two double beds, but the room is large and comfortable, and there's plenty of space throughout to stretch out. It may look Old World from the outside, but behind this home's traditional shingle exterior is a luxurious and playful home to call your own in The Hamptons. Packed with designer touches, we love the bright, double-height living space, with its character fireplace and huge windows. Parents can enjoy the privacy of the downstairs master suite, with the remaining three bedrooms upstairs. And perhaps while the little ones explore the play shed outside, you could pour a drink from the wet bar and grab a cosy spot on the patio. From here it's just a stroll into Bridgehampton Village when you're ready to explore – an area known for its great walks, cycle routes and water sports. Luckily, the host has provided a shed full of bikes, kayaks and outdoor gear (there's even an outdoor shower for afterwards). Cool off in the saltwater pool, then fire up the grill for a long, lazy meal on the patio or in the formal dining room – doors flung open to the pretty garden. It's just a five-minute drive to Water Mill, and a little further to Southampton and Sag Harbour.

We loved the upper level's stunning dining area – large enough for you all to eat together, opening out to a large deck and offering panoramic views of the water (it's also where you'll find the piano if you're musically inclined). In the evenings, barbecue outdoors before lighting the fire pit and watching the stars come out one by one.
