The home also has an entertainment room and well-equipped bar to ensure that everyone gets their share of fun. Though with a golf course nearby and rest of the island playground, perhaps we didn’t even need to worry about that.

Singing Sweet Carolina

It can sometimes be difficult to find a home for a big group getaway – the balance between communal spaces and private corners is always a tricky one, but this home definitely gets it right. Or perhaps we should say homes, as you'll find yourselves spread across two separate buildings, with a shared garden and courtyard between them. The impressive bedrooms allow you to shut the door, recharge your batteries and enjoy a moment of peace and quiet when you need to. Conversely, the large living rooms and, of course, the outdoor seating area provide plenty of room for parties and chatting into the night. The interiors are pleasingly minimalist, with hardwood floors and luxury furnishings giving the space an air of sophistication as well as comfort. Downtown Charleston is within easy walking distance – all its bars and restaurants are just a ten-minute stroll away, so heading out for dinner and drinks is as simple as walking down the street.

And just like its surroundings, the building itself is steeped in history. Built in 1885, it boasts picturesque porches, hardwood floors and a crisp colour scheme. The kitchen is eye-catching with its bright green cabinets, and offers a bold contrast to the elegant Art Deco-inspired living area. Our favourite element, however, is the veranda. No trip to the southern states is complete without at least some of the relaxation taking place on a traditional covered porch, and this home offers a charming one where you can sit and while away the hours with a cool drink.

Huddle around the fire pit on winter evenings or cook up a BBQ on the grill by the pool in summer. Inside, the bedrooms have large beds and deluxe furnishings, while the sunken living room makes for a great space to relax in front of the TV. Rent kayaks and paddle boards by the dock of the lagoon and catch an unforgettable sunset from the water.

You're also just a twenty-minute walk from the Charleston Historic District, with its fascinating landmarks, and a short drive will take you to the sands of Folly Beach.

Located on the second floor of a restored wood-fronted home in the heart of Charleston’s Cannonborough-Elliotborough neighbourhood, this home boasts an enviable position and charming interiors. Holidays here are all about enjoying the perks of the Palmetto Dunes community, with three world-class golf courses, a tennis centre, restaurants, shops and free use of the Dunes Buggy. Outdoorsy types will love the forty kilometres of paved bike paths and the Atlantic surf. After a long day of sun, sea and fun, we can see you sipping a Long Island iced tea on one of the deck chairs that have been thoughtfully set up by the lagoon, before enjoying a balmy evening dining on the terrace. There's plenty of space to sprawl out in the living area, while the bedroom is tucked away for optimal relaxation. But the best part of all is the location. Only two hundred metres from the beach, this Hilton Head Island villa is a luxurious, private hideaway made for lazy summer days. Mornings start in the bedrooms, where floor to ceiling windows bring in lots of light, before toddling into the open-plan kitchen. There's a breakfast bar for quick eats, but we prefer big get-togethers on the dining table or on the patio outside. Days can be spent lounging by the curved swimming pool, where you can take a dip to cool off before padding back inside for a drink. When things get too warm, there are several hang-out spaces, including a bright and breezy lounge, thanks to its double height windows, and a reading nook with views over the pool. Should you want to explore further afield, it's a short drive or cycle to Harbour Town with its seafood restaurants, boutiques and bustling marina.

From City Market and the vibrant riverfront to award-winning eateries and nightlife, there's no better place to soak up the city's atmosphere. Back home, the living area boasts charming exposed brick and a sofa bed for two. There's also a nice-sized kitchen and a comfortable bedroom. Just keep in mind that being so central does have its drawbacks – parking is a challenge, and the apartment can be noisy. Still, we think that's worth it to be in the centre of the action.
