In the 1940s Playa Vista was home to Hughes Aircraft Company, owned by the billionaire aviator Howard Hughes. The Spruce Goose, the world's largest airplane measured by wingspan, was built here. Today it's becoming the new tech hub for Los Angeles, with massive offices for Facebook, Microsoft, Google, Yahoo!, amongst other small tech start-ups. This population of technology companies has made it the southern anchor to the strip of neighbourhoods (which include Venice and Santa Monica) that make up LA's so-called "Silicon Beach."
