The West Village sits in the fabulously popular - and for good reason - neighbourhood of Greenwich Village. Much of the West Village's charm rests in its beautifully-preserved townhouses and cobblestone streets, which look as they did when the neighbourhood was at the centre of some of the most influential social and countercultural movements. These include the breakthrough of experimental theatre, Beat poetry, the fight for housing preservation, and the 1969 Stonewall Riots that spurred the national gay liberation movement. The West Village is certainly proud of its history. It's also very proud of its fabulous restaurants and photogenic streets. In short, this is a neighbourhood that's pretty hard to fault. Having said that, it's worth noting that New York is a very busy city (it’s not called “the city that never sleeps” for nothing).
