Whether you're after excellent hiking in the summer, fantastic skiing in the winter or just a relaxing getaway in the mountains, there's something for everyone here, especially with the gondola a twelve-minute walk away, a free ski shuttle service and the restaurants and shops in town only six minutes by car.

This cosy chalet shows off the idyllic views in every direction and makes an ideal base for anyone exploring the region. You'll feel right at home in this rustic hideaway, with the open-hearth fireplace, squishy sofas and wooden panelling creating a warm and inviting atmosphere. It's the perfect place to kick off your snow boots and unwind with a cup of hot cocoa and a good book.

Our favourite spot to soak up the sunshine (and the scenery) is the deck off the main bedroom. Enjoy a cup of coffee there in the morning before rustling up breakfast in the kitchen, then grab your skis and snowboards and hit the slopes. When your toes feel frosty and your muscles are sore, head back home to a roaring fire and some delicious cheese fondue around the oak dining table before snuggling up for a family movie night in the lounge.

This smart apartment is in the heart of Meiringen in Switzerland, close to the setting of Sherlock Holmes’ infamous (spoiler alert) fictional – and faked – death at the Reichenbach Falls. The town has taken to its mysterious connection well, building a Sherlock Holmes Museum in a picturesque former church that fans of the sleuth will want to pay a visit to. For those visiting the area hoping for more skiing than sleuthing, you're also in luck. The ski region of Meiringen-Hasliberg has a total of fourteen lifts and twenty ski runs and is a kilometre away, while further afield you’re within easy reach of Axalp, Schilthorn and Jungfrau. For summer stays, we recommend bringing your hiking boots – there are hiking paths within fifty metres of the apartment, and you’re surrounded by stunning scenery such as the Aare Gorge. Then gather your group in your snug apartment and get the fondue set – borrowed from the resort reception – bubbling. Or if all that hard work on the slopes means you’re not in the mood to cook, just wander down to the bistro and let the chefs look after you.

In winter there's access to thirteen epic ski runs just a short walk away, and ski storage is included. Visit in the summer when the mountains become lush and green for hiking and mountain biking.

There’s something wildly romantic about this home, a traditional chalet on the Swiss mountainside with modern twists – the slate living room wall is a masterpiece. Honey-toned woods and rich leathers create an atmosphere of warmth and light, no matter how much snow adorns the tops of the nearby Alpes Vaudoises, and with the home set over three storeys there’s plenty of space for all of your party to spread out and relax. We particularly love the bathrooms, that seem to test the limits of how stylish you can be in ski region Switzerland. The ski slopes of Villars-Gryon-Diablerets are a five-minute ride away on the free shuttle bus, but we wouldn’t blame you if you chose to spend the entire day sipping local wine on the balcony, soaking in the garden whirlpool, or just admiring that view over the mountains.
