This cosy chalet shows off the idyllic views in every direction and makes an ideal base for anyone exploring the region. You'll feel right at home in this rustic hideaway, with the open-hearth fireplace, squishy sofas and wooden panelling creating a warm and inviting atmosphere. It's the perfect place to kick off your snow boots and unwind with a cup of hot cocoa and a good book.

Our favourite spot to soak up the sunshine (and the scenery) is the deck off the main bedroom. Enjoy a cup of coffee there in the morning before rustling up breakfast in the kitchen, then grab your skis and snowboards and hit the slopes. When your toes feel frosty and your muscles are sore, head back home to a roaring fire and some delicious cheese fondue around the oak dining table before snuggling up for a family movie night in the lounge.

We were sold on those views of Lake Maggiore alone – and that was before we'd even clapped eyes on the panoramic sunny terrace and newly refurbished interiors of this townhouse. As we're finickity, the downstairs living space feels a little bijou, but with that covered panoramic balcony outside, we don't think you'll mind. And kids will love the novelty of the top-floor mezzanine bedroom with a TV den to spill out into. Perched amidst the hillsides, 700 metres above the lake, you're quietly removed from the bustle. But when it's time to dip your toes into lakeside living, Stresa's grand promenades and history-rich streets bustling with trattorias are just a five-minute drive away.

And while shades of terracotta, cream and grey rule in the open-plan living area, the bedroom's all about green and white. There's a well kitted-out, contemporary kitchen so cooking at home won't be a problem – but you're just steps away from some great places to eat and drink. And it's easy to explore further afield, even without a car, with the train station and ferry boats both nearby.

We love the two small balconies as well – perfect for enjoying the atmosphere of the piazza. This is the place to book to experience the heart of the city.
