Sitting on a quiet street in the middle of Sant Pol de Mar, this home might bear the traditional bearings of Mediterranean architecture on the exterior, but the interior is a real modern delight.

As you wander about, you can't fail to notice just how bright and welcoming the design is, something aided by the large windows and stark white walls that accentuate the bountiful amounts of natural light that stream inside. Cleansing colours seem to be a recurring theme here, whether in the sleek surfaces of the minimalist kitchen or the equally contemporary bathrooms, one with a hydromassage bathtub for good measure.

This being Spain, it wouldn't be asking for too much to expect some outdoor spaces in which to enjoy the glorious climate and thankfully, there are two terraces – one down at ground level, another on the upper floor that looks out to views of the surrounding town and a pair of balconies from which it's possible to spot the sea.

When that coastal panorama proves too much to resist, you'll be happy to learn that the sandy Platja de les Barques is only three minutes' walk away. You'll find a handful of bars and restaurants in the locale too, but for a much vaster choice, Barcelona is only a forty-five-minute drive away.

On the coastline north of Barcelona, ensconced in Sant Pol de Mar, a small fishing village with the sea on one side and the forest on the other, this pretty villa combines the best of Mediterranean living. The interiors are thoughtfully designed, with stone walls and terracotta tiling keeping the rooms cool. The pops of forest green in the master bedroom and the ocean blue second bedroom are an ode to the villa’s natural surroundings. 

Outside there is a terrace with views of the ocean and deck chairs for soaking up rays, with a private plunge pool to cool off in. Meals can be enjoyed at the al fresco dining table, or walk nine minutes into town where you will find excellent restaurants, local shops and a supermarket. 

The villa is a four minute walk from the beach, and the nearby national park is perfect for hiking and cycling. For those wanting to venture further afield, Barcelona can be reached in an hour by train from the centre of Sant Pol de Mar.

Come evening, fire up the barbecue and grill some seafood bought from the local fishmonger to eat beneath the stars. Whether you prefer to spend your days hiking, swimming, or simply relaxing, this villa is perfectly placed to provide something for everyone.

We love that each bedroom has its own en-suite, and how many of them open onto a terrace, so you can go from snoozing to sunbathing in moments. We also love the location – just ten minutes in the car from Cadaqués, which former resident Salvador Dalí once called “the best place in the world”. It’s easy to agree when you’re wandering the whitewashed streets of this pretty seaside town – especially when you’re staying in such a heavenly home.

The canals of the surrounding town, known as the Venice of Spain, are one of its defining attributes, so when you’re not with the kids engaging in activities, you can head out on a nightlife scene as vibrant and luxurious as some of Europe’s other seaside destinations.

Its stone-walled garden is in keeping with the home’s traditional charm and offers a lovely backdrop to the sunsets over the Pyrenees each night.

In the charming fishing port of L'Escala, the rooftop terrace of this bright and breezy villa gives you a panoramic view over the Bay of Roses. Up here, above the rooftops of the colourful town, you’ll find a turquoise plunge pool offering respite on hot days, and deck chairs to enjoy the view. Dinner can be taken on the terrace at the table for eight, and glass fold-away doors blend the dining terrace with the open-plan living room. Rattan furnishings and driftwood touches bring the beachy vibe inside and pristine white walls are livened up with sea-glass bottles and rare seashells. It’s a five-minute walk to the seafront where boats land the freshest seafood at the harbour, and a ten-minute walk sees you at the sandy stretch of beach at Platja del Rec. Nestled in the coastal village of Calella de Palafrugell, a scenic walk from the golden sands of El Golfet beach, this villa promises an exceptional stay – especially since you'll have a House Manager and housekeeping team looking after you. Inside, the bedrooms all have their own en-suites and dressing rooms (spread over three floors), plus there's a lift down to the basement where you'll find an independent suite and a professional cinema. Yes, the cinema is impressive, but we expect you'll spend most of your time here outdoors, where there's plenty of space for swimming and soaking up the sun. And just look at that view – it speaks for itself.

Outside, there are plenty of shady spots and the swimming pool provides respite on hot afternoons. When it comes to mealtimes, we recommend calling upon the help of your host to arrange for a private chef to take care of dinner. Inside, beds can be configured as doubles or twins upon request and there’s an office for anyone who’s mixing business with pleasure. Location-wise, Pals Beach is less than a twenty-five-minute drive away and the town of La Bisbal d'Empordà is reached in fifteen.

Standing in the heart of the Les Gavarres Natural Park, this former farmstead sits amidst oak forests and idyllic nature. Renovated using local materials, the home's rustic charm makes a fantastic backdrop to a family reunion, while the private garden offers stunning landscape views. While the pool is shared with the owners, it's still a great addition – set in the large garden and surrounded by trees, you'll feel the seclusion here. When you start to miss civilization, though, you're just 15 minutes from La Bisbal d'Empordà, a town with shops and eateries, and close to some of Costa Brava's most beautiful beaches.

Gaudi might be famous for his work in Barcelona, but that hasn't stopped this home taking inspiration from the famous Catalan architect. A 200-year-old farmhouse has been turned into a slick, white-washed hangout. Modernist influences are seen in the rounded walls, arched doorways, and buckled pillars. The living room is far out, from the white pool and foosball tables to the huge semi-circular sofa. The master suite is the most impressive, sending out spaceship vibes with its round bed, droplet shaped fireplace and spacious curved bath. But not even the slinky interiors can compete with Mother Nature, as views over the hills and out to the sea abound from every angle. The garden has been planted with bougainvillea, which showers archways and dining tables with pink blossoms when it blooms. For special occasions, head to the home's club room, complete with a DJ hut and incredible sound system. Life will feel pretty amazing floating in the infinity pool or sipping cocktails on the terrace.

The view from the arched windows of the living room, across the green hills to the shimmering Mediterranean Sea, is a reminder that you’re just a ten-minute drive from the coast here. A day at the beach is possible at the secret bays of Cala del Crit and Cala el Golfet, both sandy coves hidden between the cliffs.

But we wouldn’t blame you if you ended up spending all your time at this luxurious, old-world villa instead. Sun terraces and shaded nooks offer sunseekers and wallflowers alike a place to spend the day. The fountain-fed Roman swimming pool invites you for a dip on a hot day and, wandering the expansive grounds, you’ll stumble across a tennis court and games area with ping pong. Outdoor dining is a treat with a huge table for the whole group in front of the summer kitchen and, if you’re hosting a special event, a marquee can be set up on the lawn.

The foundations of this home date back to the 14th century, and inside you can still get a feel for the medieval in the vaulted basement where you’ve got your own private spa. Down here, there’s an indoor swimming pool, steam room and sauna. Various lounges and sitting rooms allow the whole group to spread out and our favourite has to be the Rib-vaulted grand lounge with its Baroque painted ceiling harking back to a bygone era. Perhaps spend the evening taking it back to analogue in the library or snooker room.

To ensure a memorable stay, your host can help arrange a variety of additional services and experiences, including hiring an in-house chef to cook for you and arranging an at-home yoga session or massage. And when you’re ready to explore, the historic town of Torroella de Montgri, with its narrow streets and impressive castle, and the former fishing village of L’Escala, famous for its anchovies, are just a short drive away.

The sea views are expansive and lovely, and there is a small jetty on the lowest level of the home that grants access to Llafranc beach. You might hear some noise from neighbours due to the close-knit manner of the area's buildings, but you're within walking distance of several Llafranc restaurants, and it's easy to enjoy an authentic Spanish stay from this charming home.

Stretch your legs with a twenty-five-minute walk to Sa Tuna, an idyllic cove with a sandy beach – it was our favourite spot to while away the long afternoons. Head home before dusk with a bottle of Cava and watch the sunset melt into the ocean from your enviable vantage point.
