Marina Alta is a coastal region that can please just about everyone  – from history buffs to beach bums, and hikers to urbanites, this region of Spain isn’t just all about waterside delights. Just a ten-minute drive inland from the picturesque town of Altea (and don’t worry, you will pass beaches en route), you’ll love unwinding in this zen-like villa. 

Traditional whitewashed walls and a terracotta roof are right on par with what you might expect in the area. But as you step inside, passing interesting shrubbery and succulents outside, the vibe is altogether more modern. We love the fresh and bright living space, with a cherry-red sofa suite and an ornately carved, wooden cabinet. Oversized bamboo canes and a woven lampshade complete the look as you move to the sunroom – a striking cylindrical structure that really sets the architecture apart from rustic traditions.

From here, peer out to your secluded gardens. Lush, green, and shaded by palms, the immaculate lawn surrounds a private, heated pool. Wander around to find orange trees popping up in the grass, and terracotta tiles leading up a staircase to the roof terrace – it's much easier to survey your kingdom from up here.

La Taronja

It's plain to see that somebody with a real eye for design has worked their magic on this townhouse found in the coastal town of Calp. Everywhere you look inside, there are tasteful touches, from the dining table made from a repurposed door and the unashamedly bright colours on the walls to the sheer range of objets d'art dotted about the home.

We're also happy to say that there's plenty of substance behind this style. The sleek black kitchen not only looks the part, but it's also well-equipped for whipping up a feast. We're also fond of the terrace, which has views out over the rooftops and verdant hillsides beyond.

When you're ready to get to know the locale a little better, you'll be surprised at how much there is to see. All of three minutes' walk from the home is Torreó de la Peça, the centuries-old defensive walls built to protect the town from marauders. Arena-Bol beach is a ten-minute walk, while further along the coastline, it's possible to head up to the top of Penyal d'Ifac in just over an hour on foot for some incredible views. 

Art Lives Here

Your own modern-day Spanish castle awaits, near the coastal city of Altea. An extraordinary piece of architecture, mixing traditional arches and shutters with white towers and an elegant curved terrace, from its lofty position you can see the sea, and pick out the highlights of the area's eclectic topography. Go for a swim or work on your tan beside the pool, or grab your clubs and play a few rounds (did we not mention it's directly on the golf course too?). You can drive to Playa de la Solsida in a matter of minutes for your beach fix, and visit the many shops and restaurants of Altea. At the end of the day, fire up the barbecue and eat out on the terrace, as the crickets start their evening chorus.

Turrets & Terraces

Step inside this dazzling, sun-filled apartment and feel instantly relaxed, courtesy of the lovely, minimalist design and those breathtaking sea views. With an idyllic sandy beach on your doorstep, a glistening communal swimming pool and all the attractions of Benidorm, you’re guaranteed a relaxing holiday here. 

The open-plan living and dining room invites you to kick back and enjoy a quiet evening of movies in the company of your loved ones. For unforgettable sunset drinks, you’ll only need to step onto your private balcony, where you can marvel at the unparalleled coastal vistas. 

You’ll be able to rustle up scrumptious meals in the well-equipped, modern kitchen and share them a the handsomely crafted wooden dining table – in fact, we love all the unique wooden pieces in this apartment. If you don’t feel like cooking, the surrounding area has an abundance of excellent restaurants, sure to satisfy any craving. 

For a night of restful sleep retire to one of the plush bedrooms and wake up feeling restored and ready for another day in the sun. 

Whiter Shade of Pale 

If you’ve always hoped to hear the ocean’s roar from your bedroom, this beachfront Benidorm home might be your new favourite location. Leading right onto the golden sands of Playa de Levante, stroll out onto the beach, where you can position yourself for a morning of Mediterranean sun and fresh air. 

Meander back to your apartment, grab a takeaway pizza at a local restaurant, and enjoy lunch at the dining table with the salty air breezing through the gaping doors. Maintain your view of the oceanfront as you pour wine in the kitchen and sit around the table, socialising long after the last crust is gone.

For dinner, you might search for a more authentic Spanish meal at one of the surrounding tapas bars and stay out for drinks at a Tiki Bar. 

Bookworms will love the amount of natural light for reading when they're not doing so in the shade of a beach umbrella, and interior enthusiasts will likely fawn over the beautiful mix of boho chic and modern simplicity.

Wrapped in Sunshine

With a sprawling garden and terrace – ideal for delicious dinners under the stars or a snooze on the outdoor sofa – a sparkling pool and plenty of room to spread out, this home checks all the boxes for a laid-back coastal stay. The light, bright interiors make the most of that sunlight and have plenty of beautiful ceramics and sculptures from all over the world to admire. The local resort provides plenty for those who want to get out and about, with bakeries and cafes within ambling distance – perfect for breakfast pastry pickups – climbing, hiking, surfing and sailing for the adventurous, weekly markets and fiestas and festivals if you come at the right time of the year. You're also just over one kilometre from the powdery beaches the Costa Blanca is known for – grab a deck chair and don't move for a while.

Wavelengths

This grand villa sits in an incredible position, just outside the shambling hilltop village of Finestrat. Dramatic views of forest-clad mountains run down to the ocean (it’s a 15-minute drive down to the sandy beach at Cala Finestrat). Surrounded by rambling gardens and grounds, this place is a secluded sanctuary. Two huge sun terraces and a huge, Roman-style swimming pool bask in the plentiful Costa Blanca sunshine. Balustraded terraces, arched porches, and stone-columned pergolas give a real sense of gravitas to the grounds. Inside, you’ll find plenty of space for your whole group to stretch out and enjoy your time together, with three different seating areas in front of TVs and fireplaces. Opulently furnished with a palette of deep reds and yellows, it feels welcoming and bright from the get-go. The living spaces are dressed head to toe in finery, with bold artworks dramatically lit and chandeliers. As evening falls the calm and quiet of the location really comes into its own. When dusk fades to night the stars begin to appear over the mountains and the distant lights of the coastal towns glitter along the horizon. This Grande Dame of a villa knows just what she’s doing.

Señora Blanca

Indulge in a Spanish siesta dream only to awaken and find it’s a reality. This villa hosts a pristine pool, a rooftop terrace with a plush seating area a sea-grazing location. Situated along the coast from El Campello, you’ll have access to the Mediterranean waters, Amenador coves and golden beaches within moments of leaving your home.

The sleek open-plan space is brilliant for socialising with your guests. Start your mornings with an espresso on the plant-walled terrace, then gather on the plump sofa as you make plans for the day. The sun will keep you company as you dive into the pool and bathe under the gentle rays on the sun loungers. If you’re seeking a repose from the sun, head up to the rooftop terrace to turn pages of your holiday read under the shelter of the sprawling canopy. The slick kitchen is set up for Mediterranean feasts for you to enjoy alfresco or fire up the barbecue for some chargrilled appetisers. There’s a juicer here too – we suggest an evening of grapefruit paloma cocktails on the rooftop as the stars descend.

Such is the charm of the villa, you may never wish to leave. But if you’re seeking sand, the beautiful Platja de l'Amerador is just a stone’s throw away. For a one-of-a-kind experience, make the drive to Baños de la Reina, where you can swim and snorkel in the majestic crystal-clear pools carved from the rock. 

Ocean Coves

This seafront apartment boasts direct access to Levante Beach and a communal swimming pool. The views are lovely, and the sand is steps away, though the location does mean you can expect some outside noise. That said, parties and loud groups aren't allowed, so we think couples, friends, and families will settle right in. Your host can provide a cot and high chair for little ones, while the kitchen is more than equipped for whipping up large family meals. On-site parking is also available, but public transport is easily accessible for exploring all Benidorm has to offer.

Seaside Escape

This family-friendly apartment with lovely views over the Benidorm coastline is a comfy place to base yourself while you enjoy a Costa Blanca holiday. You’ll have a private terrace here, where you can relax and enjoy the vistas, while the inside is sleek and modern, with plenty of space for everyone in the party to find a quiet nook. The Playa de Levante beach is just a short walk away, and there’s also a communal pool in the building. When it comes to shops and restaurants in the vicinity, you’ll be spoiled for choice, and for some sightseeing, the Old Town is also just a short drive away.

Once you’re ready to head out and explore, the area has plenty of exciting activities in store. From horse riding and cycling, to golfing, surfing and sailing – there are numerous options to choose from, all within a fifteen-minute drive from the house. If you prefer to simply relax and enjoy the beach, head out to the gorgeous El Arenal, a mere six minutes away by car.
