Neighbouring an olive farm in the Andalusian countryside, this villa is blessed with a truly idyllic location and as such, guests are sure to find it easy to switch off here. 

Perhaps unsurprisingly, this is most likely to happen outside, especially with the swimming pool overlooked by loungers, the stone outdoor kitchen with a barbecue and an alfresco dining table on the verandah on which to enjoy the fruits of your labour.

However, it's just as easy to relax inside the home too, whether you're sinking back in the whirlpool bathtub big enough for two or cuddling up next to the fireplace. The design has a rustic feel, as best seen with the wooden beams in the high-ceiling dining room or the exposed stonework in the living room. We should also mention the balcony just off the kitchen, which is a lovely spot for coffee first thing in the morning.

In the local town of Montemayor, there's a decent choice of restaurants and bars that are reachable on foot, but you'll find even more – plus plenty of historic architecture – in the city of Córdoba, about thirty-five minutes' drive away.

The closest town is around a fifteen-minute drive away – El Saucejo – where you’ve got supermarkets for supplies and a handful of local restaurants and bars. Plus, the pretty town of Ronda with its famous gorge and the historic city of Seville are both around an hour’s drive away, ideal for a day trip or two.

Life here is all about embracing the slow pace – lying up on a lounger by the swimming pool as orange trees provide natural shade. Finding a secluded spot on the stone patios and settling in with a good book. Or, perhaps gathering for rustic lunches in the shade of the outdoor dining area, surrounded by old-world farming tools – a nod to the villa’s history.

Two private terraces equipped with outdoor seating are a highlight here, as is the home’s access to the building’s communal swimming pool (open seasonally). When you’re ready to explore, you’ll find a bus stop nearby that will whisk you into the city in no time. Alternatively, take advantage of the free garage parking here to embark on further explorations of the Andalusian region.

Looking for a one-of-a-kind home with a heaven-sent view to boot? Well, they don’t come more character-filled or awe-inspiring than this. Perched high on the hills of Granada and just a short drive from the sandy shores of Lake Iznajar, this ancient church is lovingly reimagined into a unique retreat for relaxation and reflection. 

Step inside, and the house seems so frozen in time you can almost hear the old church bell ring. Ochre-washed walls and vaulted ceilings bring all the historic charm, and in the central nave now lies a vast double-height living space. And don’t get us going on those hand-painted frescoes – best admired from upstairs on the lofty mezzanine level. And there are some surprising flurries of 21st-century living to indulge in here, too. Starting with that infinity pool with a counter-current swim jet to bank some laps as you soak up the jaw-dropping vistas of the Cordova Subbética mountain range.

As night falls, the home takes on a truly magical feel, with the lights of the nearby town, Algarinejo, flickering on and a blanket of stars twinkling above. Cosy up on the Balinese bed outside with drinks to catch a shooting star – we can’t think of a finer spot to toast a day’s end.

In Seventh Heaven

High in the Andalusian hills, this home boasts fantastic views across the mountains. Access is via a dirt road, so a car is a must, but the secluded area and rural scenery make the steep, winding trek worth it. The one downside of this location is the lack of a nearby beach – you'd have to drive about 45 kilometres to reach the coast – but a private pool will do the job when you fancy a dip. The design is a bit more rustic than we'd like, but it's roomy inside and out. That said, as there are just two bathrooms between all ten guests and only room for six around the dining tables, we suggest a lower occupancy here.

The patio area is where you'll be spending most of your time – and for good reason. As soon as you step outside of the back door, you'll be greeted by one of the most jaw-dropping views. We especially think you'll love meal times spent on the terrace. Serve up a big bowl of paella valenciana and feel like the mountains have been invited to dinner with you. Thankfully, they're quiet guests!

Being located in such a rural area means you have plenty of hiking opportunities within a short distance. We recommend the thirty-minute drive to Caminito del Rey. It's a beautiful walkway pinned along the steep walls of a narrow gorge in El Chorro. Admission is cheap and well worth it for amazing photo opportunities. After your day out hiking, you'll look forward to returning home to a place packed with as much character on the inside as the landscape outside. After a lazy morning you might have a delicious breakfast alfresco as you plan the day’s itinerary, or maybe you’ll just set off in search of adventure, finding it wherever the road takes you – the bakery a few minutes away is probably a good place to start. 

The heart of Málaga, and the beautiful coastline that goes along with it, can be explored by car and whilst you’re out, you may as well sample every tapas bar within sight until you’ve found your favourite. 

Back home, barbecue, swim, and sunbathe to your heart's content, sitting outside even as warm afternoons turn into balmy evenings. When you eventually retire inside, light a fire and grab a glass of fortified wine as you play a board game or watch a movie together as a family.

Slink off to the quiet bedrooms for a quick siesta and when you’re ready and raring to go, drive down to Málaga for its sixteen sunny beaches and charming old town. Sharpen your history knowledge at the Picasso Museum followed by a guided tour of the Alcazaba. In the early evening, watch the sky turn violet from Playa la Malagueta then seek out a Michelin-recommended for a supper you’ll never forget.

This modern apartment is in a quiet residential area of Cordoba, just 2 kilometres from the city centre. A private terrace furnished with chairs and a table looks out over the shared swimming pool in the garden below. Guests have access to the pool and loungers between April and November. Evenings could be passed in the outdoor dining area, cooking together in the covered summer kitchen and grilling up local delicacies on the barbecue. As the sun starts to set, you’ll see the sky shift into glorious pastel hues, before the stars emerge and create a new backdrop altogether. 

This is a classic Spanish homestead in many ways, with its rustic-chic style and antiques. But the owners have also thought of everything their guests might need and elevated the home to meet those needs. Quite simply, you’ll never want to leave.
