Neighbouring an olive farm in the Andalusian countryside, this villa is blessed with a truly idyllic location and as such, guests are sure to find it easy to switch off here. 

Perhaps unsurprisingly, this is most likely to happen outside, especially with the swimming pool overlooked by loungers, the stone outdoor kitchen with a barbecue and an alfresco dining table on the verandah on which to enjoy the fruits of your labour.

However, it's just as easy to relax inside the home too, whether you're sinking back in the whirlpool bathtub big enough for two or cuddling up next to the fireplace. The design has a rustic feel, as best seen with the wooden beams in the high-ceiling dining room or the exposed stonework in the living room. We should also mention the balcony just off the kitchen, which is a lovely spot for coffee first thing in the morning.

In the local town of Montemayor, there's a decent choice of restaurants and bars that are reachable on foot, but you'll find even more – plus plenty of historic architecture – in the city of Córdoba, about thirty-five minutes' drive away.

Step inside, and the house seems so frozen in time you can almost hear the old church bell ring. Being located in such a rural area means you have plenty of hiking opportunities within a short distance. We recommend the thirty-minute drive to Caminito del Rey. It's a beautiful walkway pinned along the steep walls of a narrow gorge in El Chorro. Admission is cheap and well worth it for amazing photo opportunities. After your day out hiking, you'll look forward to returning home to a place packed with as much character on the inside as the landscape outside. If you’d like to expend a little energy, enjoy a stroll through the surrounding countryside. Or why not spend the day in Granada? We recommend visiting the stunning Alhambra complex and watching the sunset from the San Nicolás viewpoint. In the early evening, seek out a traditional tablao for a captivating flamenco performance.

From here, lazy days can be spent relaxing at home, admiring the beautiful views or exploring the Andalusian countryside. You’ll find Villanueva de Tapia is just 4.3 kilometres away, while the beaches of the Costa del Sol are 60 kilometres away.

A striking yet traditional single-storey holiday villa located amid the peaceful, natural tranquillity of the Torcal de Antequera in the Andalusian hinterland, this home is heaped with typically Spanish charm. You'll find  a comfortable and cosy home-from-home that allows you to get out and experience the very best of southern Spain. 

With a perfect balance between inside and out, each space within this home feels well thought out and welcoming, offering loads of inviting seating areas both inside and out, where you can park yourself with a book for an hour or two, or simply luxuriate in a rare moment of stillness. Then of course there are those spectacular mountain views – we challenge anyone not to feel an overarching sense of calm whilst gazing out over that verdant landscape, dotted with majestically cresting peaks. There's also the pool area, which we think is simply too good to resist. Imagine waking feeling rested and refreshed in one of the charming bedrooms, before stepping out and feeling that glorious Mediterranean sun gently warm your skin. That's certainly our idea of a good way to start the day.

As for the rest of it? Well, those actively inclined will find loads of hiking and biking opportunities in the local area, whilst the museums and attractions of Málaga are reachable with just a short drive. Or, why not keep the rural theme going and discover hidden gems among the whitewashed villages that dot the hillsides here, stopping for a taste of traditional tapas along the way?

Look a little closer and you'll be able to tell from the tiled kitchen, sleek bathrooms and stylish furnishings that the property underwent a recent refurbishment. The outdoor area is as far from back-to-basics as you could imagine, as well. Not only is there an invitingly blue swimming pool surrounded by loungers that wouldn't look out of place on a Balaeric island, but there's a pergola at the edge of the home's grounds that treats guests to sweeping views of the local countryside.

You just might find that this panorama inspires you to head out and explore this corner of southern Spain. The Natural Park of the Torcal of Antequera takes about half an hour to reach in the car, as does the historic city that lends the park its name. Fire up the Green Egg barbecue for an alfresco feast in the fresh mountain air, or head inside to the dining room with its picture-frame window looking out over the view.

The kitchen has a charming farmhouse feel to wooden cabinets and terracotta floors, and your host can arrange a private chef as an extra if you want to take it easy. Get a fire crackling in the double-sided fireplace to keep the living room toasty warm. When it comes to hitting the hay, bedrooms are pristine white with natural wood accents for a blissful sleep.

In terms of location, you’re a short drive from the white-wash village of Canillas de Aceituno where flower-dappled squares house family-run restaurants. For a day at the beach, it’s just a half-hour drive to Torre del Mar.

Situated just 2km from the city centre, this modern apartment in Córdoba, surrounded by restaurants, means that dining out is always an option here. While it’s a good choice for four people, bear in mind that two will draw the short straw and end up sleeping on the sofa bed in the living room, at the added expense of lounge space, so we think this home is a perfect fit for two. The sun-kissed private terrace is a nice touch, while the communal pool offers some respite from the Spanish sun. 

The Ode to Sunburst

In the exclusive Arruzafa area of Cordoba, you'll be within walking distance of many shops and restaurants and just 2 kilometres from the town's historic centre from here. Modern and super functional, the apartment sits on a complex with a shared swimming pool. Plus, you'll have your own private balcony terrace to retreat to – perfect for sunset drinks with a view. With an open layout kitchen and living area, guests can socialise as a group and spend moments of solitude in the bedroom. Please note, however, that at full occupancy, two guests will be sleeping on the sofa beds in the living area. 




Peace on the Piazza

High in the Andalusian hills, this home boasts fantastic views across the mountains. Access is via a dirt road, so a car is a must, but the secluded area and rural scenery make the steep, winding trek worth it. The one downside of this location is the lack of a nearby beach – you'd have to drive about 45 kilometres to reach the coast – but a private pool will do the job when you fancy a dip. The design is a bit more rustic than we'd like, but it's roomy inside and out. That said, as there are just two bathrooms between all ten guests and only room for six around the dining tables, we suggest a lower occupancy here.

Gazing at the Horizon

This modern apartment is in a quiet residential area of Cordoba, just 2 kilometres from the city centre. A private terrace furnished with chairs and a table looks out over the shared swimming pool in the garden below. Guests have access to the pool and loungers between April and November. Inside the apartment, the living room is sunny thanks to glass sliding doors to the terrace and the small, sleek kitchen area has all the essentials for self-catering. From the single bedroom, you’ve got the bonus of a second terrace for morning coffee outside.
