Neighbouring an olive farm in the Andalusian countryside, this villa is blessed with a truly idyllic location and as such, guests are sure to find it easy to switch off here. 

Perhaps unsurprisingly, this is most likely to happen outside, especially with the swimming pool overlooked by loungers, the stone outdoor kitchen with a barbecue and an alfresco dining table on the verandah on which to enjoy the fruits of your labour.

However, it's just as easy to relax inside the home too, whether you're sinking back in the whirlpool bathtub big enough for two or cuddling up next to the fireplace. The design has a rustic feel, as best seen with the wooden beams in the high-ceiling dining room or the exposed stonework in the living room. We should also mention the balcony just off the kitchen, which is a lovely spot for coffee first thing in the morning.

In the local town of Montemayor, there's a decent choice of restaurants and bars that are reachable on foot, but you'll find even more – plus plenty of historic architecture – in the city of Córdoba, about thirty-five minutes' drive away.

Plus, the pretty town of Ronda with its famous gorge and the historic city of Seville are both around an hour’s drive away, ideal for a day trip or two.

Life here is all about embracing the slow pace – lying up on a lounger by the swimming pool as orange trees provide natural shade. Looking for a one-of-a-kind home with a heaven-sent view to boot? Well, they don’t come more character-filled or awe-inspiring than this. Perched high on the hills of Granada and just a short drive from the sandy shores of Lake Iznajar, this ancient church is lovingly reimagined into a unique retreat for relaxation and reflection. 

Step inside, and the house seems so frozen in time you can almost hear the old church bell ring. Ochre-washed walls and vaulted ceilings bring all the historic charm, and in the central nave now lies a vast double-height living space. And don’t get us going on those hand-painted frescoes – best admired from upstairs on the lofty mezzanine level. And there are some surprising flurries of 21st-century living to indulge in here, too. Starting with that infinity pool with a counter-current swim jet to bank some laps as you soak up the jaw-dropping vistas of the Cordova Subbética mountain range.

Perfectly designed for alfresco living, the vast south-facing terrace is the spot to drink up those sea and mountain vistas (preferably with a glass of something chilled in hand). As is that cool, blue pool with an outdoor shower to beat the heat. And just imagine this place at sunset as you fire up the barbecue – that’s a memory made right there.

Inside, while the interiors aren’t winning any design gongs soon, everywhere feels beautifully cared for and charming. Cool, terracotta floors and exposed stonework bring the character, while the bedrooms feel blissfully quiet with no traffic noise to disturb your beauty sleep here.

If you can tear yourself away from the panoramic scenes outside, you’ll find you’re closer to the action than you think. The nearest village, Frigiliana (a ten-minute drive), is an afternoon well spent with its tapas bars tucked away in the Moorish old quarter. Nerja, with its ten miles of sandy shores, is a twenty-minute drive for something a little buzzier. Or don your hiking boots or hop on your mountain bikes to explore the verdant pine forests of the Sierra Almijara nature reserve and the lost village of Acebucha – trails start close to your door.

Being located in such a rural area means you have plenty of hiking opportunities within a short distance. We recommend the thirty-minute drive to Caminito del Rey. It's a beautiful walkway pinned along the steep walls of a narrow gorge in El Chorro. Admission is cheap and well worth it for amazing photo opportunities. After your day out hiking, you'll look forward to returning home to a place packed with as much character on the inside as the landscape outside. Such is the variety of amenities, you could spend days in the garden without getting bored. Spend lazy days moseying between the sun beds and the hammock, occasionally cooling off in the fresh water of the pool. For a more lively itinerary, get rallies going during table tennis before you settle into the excitement of the evening.

When it comes to seeing a little more of the local area, the golden sands of Playa de la Caleta de Vélez are easy to reach in the car, while you can head into the mountains for unforgettable nature walks. If you’re in the mood for a day trip, the centre of Malaga will take you under an hour to get to when you fancy a day packed full of museums and historic architecture.

Waking up early to see the golden haze of the sky contrasting the rocky mountain peaks surrounding the home is a real sight to behold. 

The inside of the home is as traditional as it comes. We love the ceiling beams and dark wood furniture giving this home an authentic Meditteranean feel. While your days will likely be spent outside in the sun, your evenings will be just as enjoyable gathering around the fireplace in the lounge. Despite being located high up the mountains, this home is still well connected to life around. The nearest village, Cómpeta, is 4.2km away and has all the essential supplies you need, along with opportunities for meals out. We're sure you'll probably be rushing back to this special home afterwards though.

Sat atop a hill overlooking the undulating Andalusian landscape, this homespun villa is a place to relax and recharge. When you’ve finished the last of your coffee, plunge into the pool or lie back on a lounge and soak up the unobstructed vistas. 

If you’d like to expend a little energy, enjoy a stroll through the surrounding countryside. Or why not spend the day in Granada? We recommend visiting the stunning Alhambra complex and watching the sunset from the San Nicolás viewpoint. In the early evening, seek out a traditional tablao for a captivating flamenco performance.

It’s perfect for quiet escapes to the countryside, where you can rest, relax and make memories. 

The villa can be found in Competa in Andalucia, and boasts views of the mountains of Azarquia. From the terrace, there’s a partial sea view – the views here really are spectacular. Vineyards, olive groves and almond trees surround the home and add to the pretty scenery, making it feel deliciously secluded. 

You’ll spend most of your time outside, drinking in the views as you soak up the Spanish sun. Slip into the private swimming pool to splash about with the little ones, or to float in the cool water. The barbecue makes alfresco dining even more appealing – is there anything better than ending a day in the sun with a feast under the stars?

Those looking for a remote retreat need look no further than this rustic mountain home, situated inland from the bustling shores of the Costa del Sol. Spread over a single level, the home flows from room to room with elegant archways separating the spaces. With exposed stone walls, terracotta floor tiles and elegant wooden furniture, your hosts have designed a welcoming space that's in keeping with its spectacular rural surroundings. 

The grounds are the real highlight and have been designed to make the most of the enviable Mediterranean climate and breathtaking views. A spacious terrace comes equipped with a private pool surrounded by sun loungers and there are a couple of shaded seating areas on hand to shelter you from the glare of the midday sun. Finally, there's a built-in brick oven for cooking your food over fire.

Given the location, you're looking at a minimum of a forty-minute drive to reach the authentic Andalusian town of Vélez-Málaga, or the charming former fishing village of Nerja. So we say stock up on essentials, embrace the solitude and enjoy a week or two to completely disconnect – you'd be surprised how exhausting doing nothing can be.

Blessed with a peaceful position in the Andalusian countryside, this rustic home is nearly two centuries old and if anything, it's getting more charming as the years go on.

The main reason for this is the way that the hosts find a balance between retaining period features with adding more contemporary amenities. Behind the home's whitewashed walls, you'll see wooden ceiling beams and a traditional fireplace, but also a modern kitchen and equally glossy bathrooms.

Given the local climate, you will probably want to spend as many waking hours in the open air as possible and there are plenty of ways to do just that across the ten-hectare site. Not only is the swimming pool especially cooling on hot afternoons, but it also looks out over sweeping views of local hillsides. If you're ever in need of a little shade, there's lots of space to sit and relax beneath the leafy pergola, too.

The address sure does feel secluded and the nearest village – Cómpeta – is just over two kilometres away, offering a small selection of shops and restaurants. A little further afield, the coastline lies about 20 kilometres away and there's a great selection of beaches from which to pick.

Slink off to the quiet bedrooms for a quick siesta and when you’re ready and raring to go, drive down to Málaga for its sixteen sunny beaches and charming old town. Sharpen your history knowledge at the Picasso Museum followed by a guided tour of the Alcazaba. In the early evening, watch the sky turn violet from Playa la Malagueta then seek out a Michelin-recommended for a supper you’ll never forget.
