Neighbouring an olive farm in the Andalusian countryside, this villa is blessed with a truly idyllic location and as such, guests are sure to find it easy to switch off here. 

Perhaps unsurprisingly, this is most likely to happen outside, especially with the swimming pool overlooked by loungers, the stone outdoor kitchen with a barbecue and an alfresco dining table on the verandah on which to enjoy the fruits of your labour.

However, it's just as easy to relax inside the home too, whether you're sinking back in the whirlpool bathtub big enough for two or cuddling up next to the fireplace. The design has a rustic feel, as best seen with the wooden beams in the high-ceiling dining room or the exposed stonework in the living room. We should also mention the balcony just off the kitchen, which is a lovely spot for coffee first thing in the morning.

In the local town of Montemayor, there's a decent choice of restaurants and bars that are reachable on foot, but you'll find even more – plus plenty of historic architecture – in the city of Córdoba, about thirty-five minutes' drive away.

We never underestimate the power of a killer view. Which is precisely why this blissfully secluded Finca perched high in the valley above the coast of Nerja caught our eye.

Perfectly designed for alfresco living, the vast south-facing terrace is the spot to drink up those sea and mountain vistas (preferably with a glass of something chilled in hand). As is that cool, blue pool with an outdoor shower to beat the heat. And just imagine this place at sunset as you fire up the barbecue – that’s a memory made right there.

Inside, while the interiors aren’t winning any design gongs soon, everywhere feels beautifully cared for and charming. Cool, terracotta floors and exposed stonework bring the character, while the bedrooms feel blissfully quiet with no traffic noise to disturb your beauty sleep here.

If you can tear yourself away from the panoramic scenes outside, you’ll find you’re closer to the action than you think. The nearest village, Frigiliana (a ten-minute drive), is an afternoon well spent with its tapas bars tucked away in the Moorish old quarter. Step inside, and the house seems so frozen in time you can almost hear the old church bell ring. As night falls, the home takes on a truly magical feel, with the lights of the nearby town, Algarinejo, flickering on and a blanket of stars twinkling above. Cosy up on the Balinese bed outside with drinks to catch a shooting star – we can’t think of a finer spot to toast a day’s end.

Spend the afternoon grilling on the barbecue in the outdoor kitchen or trying your hand at making homemade pizzas in the outdoor oven before dining alfresco at the large dining table on the covered terrace. The terrace is where you’ll spend most of your time, whether that’s cooking up a storm on the barbecue or cooling off in the private pool. Should you fancy some alone time, most of the bedrooms have balcony access. If you intend to explore during your stay, we’d recommend hiring a car. Peñoncillo Beach is around a forty-minute drive away, while the charming town of Cómpeta is reached in less than ten.

Not only is it known for its currants, but the village is also the home of Andalusian favourite, ajoblanco - a cold soup made from bread, garlic and almonds. Should you wish to sample this local delicacy, a quick wander of its winding whitewashed streets will unearth several family-run restaurants. 

However, between the well-equipped kitchen and the built-in barbecue, there's not much call to leave this idyllic spot, so you might want to stock up on essentials at the supermarkets in Vélez-Málaga before you arrive.

The main reason for this is the way that the hosts find a balance between retaining period features with adding more contemporary amenities. Behind the home's whitewashed walls, you'll see wooden ceiling beams and a traditional fireplace, but also a modern kitchen and equally glossy bathrooms.

Given the local climate, you will probably want to spend as many waking hours in the open air as possible and there are plenty of ways to do just that across the ten-hectare site. Not only is the swimming pool especially cooling on hot afternoons, but it also looks out over sweeping views of local hillsides. If you're ever in need of a little shade, there's lots of space to sit and relax beneath the leafy pergola, too.

The address sure does feel secluded and the nearest village – Cómpeta – is just over two kilometres away, offering a small selection of shops and restaurants. A little further afield, the coastline lies about 20 kilometres away and there's a great selection of beaches from which to pick.

Nestled away within Andalusia's mountainous interior, this villa bears the traditional appearance of many of the region's homes with whitewashed walls, exposed beams and a fireplace. However, to label the address rustic wouldn't be telling the whole story.

Look a little closer and you'll be able to tell from the tiled kitchen, sleek bathrooms and stylish furnishings that the property underwent a recent refurbishment. The outdoor area is as far from back-to-basics as you could imagine, as well. Not only is there an invitingly blue swimming pool surrounded by loungers that wouldn't look out of place on a Balaeric island, but there's a pergola at the edge of the home's grounds that treats guests to sweeping views of the local countryside.

You just might find that this panorama inspires you to head out and explore this corner of southern Spain. The Natural Park of the Torcal of Antequera takes about half an hour to reach in the car, as does the historic city that lends the park its name. In the other direction, the art galleries and seaside spots of Malaga can be reached in just under an hour in the car.

We don’t know about you, but we can’t think of a better way to spend the afternoon.

With a perfect balance between inside and out, each space within this home feels well thought out and welcoming, offering loads of inviting seating areas both inside and out, where you can park yourself with a book for an hour or two, or simply luxuriate in a rare moment of stillness. Then of course there are those spectacular mountain views – we challenge anyone not to feel an overarching sense of calm whilst gazing out over that verdant landscape, dotted with majestically cresting peaks. There's also the pool area, which we think is simply too good to resist. Imagine waking feeling rested and refreshed in one of the charming bedrooms, before stepping out and feeling that glorious Mediterranean sun gently warm your skin. That's certainly our idea of a good way to start the day.

Well, those actively inclined will find loads of hiking and biking opportunities in the local area, whilst the museums and attractions of Málaga are reachable with just a short drive.
