Though the house feels a little dated in parts, it offers a comfortable space to unwind when the midday Mediterranean sun reaches its peak – then again, there’s the outdoor pool to cool off in too. Make the most of the built-in barbecue and dine alfresco or walk the coastal path to Llafranc for a memorable meal along the seafront.

The sea views are expansive and lovely, and there is a small jetty on the lowest level of the home that grants access to Llafranc beach. You might hear some noise from neighbours due to the close-knit manner of the area's buildings, but you're within walking distance of several Llafranc restaurants, and it's easy to enjoy an authentic Spanish stay from this charming home.

The countryside around this grand, Catalan mansion looks like a painting with verdant green forests meeting wildflower meadows. The view from the arched windows of the living room, across the green hills to the shimmering Mediterranean Sea, is a reminder that you’re just a ten-minute drive from the coast here. A day at the beach is possible at the secret bays of Cala del Crit and Cala el Golfet, both sandy coves hidden between the cliffs.

But we wouldn’t blame you if you ended up spending all your time at this luxurious, old-world villa instead. Sun terraces and shaded nooks offer sunseekers and wallflowers alike a place to spend the day. The fountain-fed Roman swimming pool invites you for a dip on a hot day and, wandering the expansive grounds, you’ll stumble across a tennis court and games area with ping pong. Outdoor dining is a treat with a huge table for the whole group in front of the summer kitchen and, if you’re hosting a special event, a marquee can be set up on the lawn.

The foundations of this home date back to the 14th century, and inside you can still get a feel for the medieval in the vaulted basement where you’ve got your own private spa. Down here, there’s an indoor swimming pool, steam room and sauna. Various lounges and sitting rooms allow the whole group to spread out and our favourite has to be the Rib-vaulted grand lounge with its Baroque painted ceiling harking back to a bygone era. Perhaps spend the evening taking it back to analogue in the library or snooker room.

We loved the contemporary windows that flood the interiors with natural light, providing a seamless transition between indoor and outdoor living. Its stone-walled garden is in keeping with the home’s traditional charm and offers a lovely backdrop to the sunsets over the Pyrenees each night.

Renovated using local materials, the home's rustic charm makes a fantastic backdrop to a family reunion, while the private garden offers stunning landscape views. While the pool is shared with the owners, it's still a great addition – set in the large garden and surrounded by trees, you'll feel the seclusion here. When you start to miss civilization, though, you're just 15 minutes from La Bisbal d'Empordà, a town with shops and eateries, and close to some of Costa Brava's most beautiful beaches.

Lazy days can be spent admiring the vistas from the private pool and terraces and when you’re ready to head out, you’ll find a sandy beach and choice of restaurants in Tamariu, just a five-minute drive away.

This lovely home in Llafranc is perfect for those looking for absolute rest and relaxation. Boasting countryside views, this home is close to the beach and the bars of the town, while being nicely removed from tourist traps. Llafranc is a quiet part of Spain on the Costa Brava, with a stunning coastline and gorgeous beaches. 

The home is bright and cheerful, with bold splashes of colour that add warmth to the neutral palette. Your eye will most often be drawn outside, through the floor-to-ceiling windows that lead onto the large terrace. Trees surround the home, making it feel nicely secluded despite being part of a resort. 

When you’re not by the shared swimming pool – which is huge and inviting – you’ll likely spend most of your time on the terrace. There are sun loungers so sun-worshippers will be content, and there’s a lovely dining area too. You might like to drive fourteen minutes to beautiful Calella de Palafrugell for lunch by the water, and then spend your evenings grilling up local seafood on the barbecue. 

The clear water and soft sand of Platja El Cau are a seven-minute walk away, so days at the beach couldn’t be easier. To really take in the glorious coastline, walk ten minutes to the viewpoint at Mirador de la Divina Pastora. It’s a wonderful spot for sunset.

Only a two-minute stroll from the promenade-lined Tamariu Beach, this apartment gives you excellent access to seaside shops and cafes. Fancy making memories? This town offers a variety of boating experiences, or maybe you'll venture inland for a hike along the Font d'en Cruanyes. Though this bright home can accommodate up to four guests, some may find the living space a bit cramped once the sofa bed pulls out. We also think the balcony is better suited as a romantic chill-out spot.

Sitting peacefully on the rugged coastline of Palafrugell, this home makes the ideal setting for a rustic Catalonian escape. You’ll be welcomed by beautiful views, a private swimming pool and plenty of outdoor space to sit back and soak it all in. The rooms and furnishings are slightly dated, but it’s a great option for families with one of the twin bedrooms featuring children’s beds, plus your host can also help organise cots and high chairs. You will need a car to get around here, but it’s just 2.2. kilometres to the amenities of Palafrugell, with Platja Fonda beach just a ten-minute drive away.

Renovated to feel luxurious and modern, this beautiful villa was originally built in the 1940s and it has the patchwork stone facade to show for it. Although imposing from a distance, the interior radiates comfort and homeliness to make your break as cosy as possible, but not without a little dash of pizazz. Wander across three floors to find your favourite spot in this home – we can guarantee for some it will be in the games room where you can pass hours playing billiards, whereas other may take most favourably to the minibar and dancefloor. 

As fun as it is indoors, the outdoor area has even more to offer. Splash in the pool or challenge each other to a game of tennis, but don’t forget to unwind on the sunloungers as you kick back with an ice-cold drink and good book. 

Light the barbecue for lunch and make use of the sprawling terrace to socialise with wine, nibbles and good conversation. For a bit of alone-time, you can take to one of the swing chairs to admire the view, or stretch yourself all the way out on one of the hammocks to have an afternoon nap in the shade of the trees. 

Costa Brava has an arresting Mediterranean coastline and we encourage you to explore it. Start by taking a twenty-five-minute walk to the soft sand of Llafranc beach. When you’re not enjoying alfresco meals at home, you might stroll to find some choice restaurants not even ten minutes away.

If you’re looking for a luxurious getaway on a stretch of coastline that as yet, miraculously remains unspoilt by the tourist rush, look no further. This four-bedroom villa, complete with a Roman-style private pool, is on one of the prettiest (and quietest) stretches of the Costa Brava, just minutes away from the fishing port and sandy beach of Tamariu. The villa itself is a treat, with bright colours and modern artworks - a welcome alternative to the sometimes bland decor of resorts. But the living room and kitchens on the top floor mean optimal views when dining alfresco or relaxing after a busy day.

The home itself is pretty basic, but features some boho styling that gives it some character – we love the beachy decor and colourful soft furnishings.
