Vibrant Barcelona is also around a half an hour drive away and makes for an excellent day trip. You can tell a lot of thought has gone into ensuring Sunset Hideaway has a sociable vibe. You’ll find large living spaces across two floors, making this a great spot for two groups of families looking for the occasional downtime. We loved the contemporary windows that flood the interiors with natural light, providing a seamless transition between indoor and outdoor living. Its stone-walled garden is in keeping with the home’s traditional charm and offers a lovely backdrop to the sunsets over the Pyrenees each night.

The view from the arched windows of the living room, across the green hills to the shimmering Mediterranean Sea, is a reminder that you’re just a ten-minute drive from the coast here. A day at the beach is possible at the secret bays of Cala del Crit and Cala el Golfet, both sandy coves hidden between the cliffs.

But we wouldn’t blame you if you ended up spending all your time at this luxurious, old-world villa instead. Sun terraces and shaded nooks offer sunseekers and wallflowers alike a place to spend the day. The fountain-fed Roman swimming pool invites you for a dip on a hot day and, wandering the expansive grounds, you’ll stumble across a tennis court and games area with ping pong. Outdoor dining is a treat with a huge table for the whole group in front of the summer kitchen and, if you’re hosting a special event, a marquee can be set up on the lawn.

The foundations of this home date back to the 14th century, and inside you can still get a feel for the medieval in the vaulted basement where you’ve got your own private spa. Down here, there’s an indoor swimming pool, steam room and sauna. Various lounges and sitting rooms allow the whole group to spread out and our favourite has to be the Rib-vaulted grand lounge with its Baroque painted ceiling harking back to a bygone era. Perhaps spend the evening taking it back to analogue in the library or snooker room.

Inside, the bedrooms all have their own en-suites and dressing rooms (spread over three floors), plus there's a lift down to the basement where you'll find an independent suite and a professional cinema. Yes, the cinema is impressive, but we expect you'll spend most of your time here outdoors, where there's plenty of space for swimming and soaking up the sun. The sea views are expansive and lovely, and there is a small jetty on the lowest level of the home that grants access to Llafranc beach. You might hear some noise from neighbours due to the close-knit manner of the area's buildings, but you're within walking distance of several Llafranc restaurants, and it's easy to enjoy an authentic Spanish stay from this charming home.

We loved the well-kept garden, peaceful patio and distant views of the Pyrenees – it’s easy to adopt a laidback, Mediterranean lifestyle here. To ensure a memorable stay, your host can help arrange a variety of additional services and experiences, including hiring an in-house chef to cook for you and arranging an at-home yoga session or massage. And when you’re ready to explore, the historic town of Torroella de Montgri, with its narrow streets and impressive castle, and the former fishing village of L’Escala, famous for its anchovies, are just a short drive away.

Perfectly positioned on a hillside, a ten-minute drive from the pretty town of Begur, this villa is all about sea views and laidback living. Your days will be spent on your private terrace, soaking up every last drop of the Costa Brava sunshine. Perhaps you’ll settle into a lounger with an ice-cold beverage in hand or maybe you’ll swim gentle laps in the glittering pool. When it’s time to eat, set the table on the balcony ready for a Catalan feast whipped up in the no-frills kitchen and if you’d like a quiet moment with your holiday read, the window seat in the bright living space is an excellent spot. Stretch your legs with a twenty-five-minute walk to Sa Tuna, an idyllic cove with a sandy beach – it was our favourite spot to while away the long afternoons. Head home before dusk with a bottle of Cava and watch the sunset melt into the ocean from your enviable vantage point.

Holding a commanding position over stunning sea and mountain views, this home in the Costa Brava is a sanctuary from the hustle and bustle of city life. Perched on the balcony, you'll be able to catch incredible sunrises and see the fishing boats of Sa Riera resting just off the beach. Said beach is, along with several shops and restaurants, only a few minutes walk away, meaning you can break from your seclusion whenever you want. Back home, the communal pool helps the home stand out from other places in the area, and should you need flexible sleeping arrangements, you'll find a sofa bed on the mezzanine.

This spacious Mediterranean-style villa offers gorgeous views across the bay of Pals. There is more than enough space for families or large friend groups, thanks to the private pool and separate annexe. Located between the medieval town and golden beach of Pals, you'll want a car here to make the most of your stay. This home's bedrooms and bathrooms are all downstairs, so it might not be suitable for guests with less mobility. But the living room and kitchens on the top floor mean optimal views when dining alfresco or relaxing after a busy day.

Right on the coastline of the Costa Brava, you'll be a short drive from Begur, Tamariu, and other notable spots – that's if you can pull yourself away from the scenery back home, of course.

Location-wise, Pals Beach is less than a twenty-five-minute drive away and the town of La Bisbal d'Empordà is reached in fifteen.

This four-bedroom villa, complete with a Roman-style private pool, is on one of the prettiest (and quietest) stretches of the Costa Brava, just minutes away from the fishing port and sandy beach of Tamariu. The villa itself is a treat, with bright colours and modern artworks - a welcome alternative to the sometimes bland decor of resorts. Though the apartment isn’t as spacious as some, you’ll have the benefit of a shared infinity pool with views to the sea. And with free, private parking, hiring a car to explore the rest of the Costa Brava is must.

This Spanish apartment provides a great base for exploring the beaches of Costa Brava – it's just a leisurely stroll from here to Sa Riera Beach, a gorgeous sandy spot where you can enjoy sea swimming or water sports.  Here, you'll enjoy access to the building's shared infinity pool, and enjoy some stellar sea views while you do your morning lengths. The home itself is pretty basic, but features some boho styling that gives it some character – we love the beachy decor and colourful soft furnishings.

Sitting peacefully on the rugged coastline of Palafrugell, this home makes the ideal setting for a rustic Catalonian escape. You’ll be welcomed by beautiful views, a private swimming pool and plenty of outdoor space to sit back and soak it all in. The rooms and furnishings are slightly dated, but it’s a great option for families with one of the twin bedrooms featuring children’s beds, plus your host can also help organise cots and high chairs. You will need a car to get around here, but it’s just 2.2. kilometres to the amenities of Palafrugell, with Platja Fonda beach just a ten-minute drive away.

Make the most of the built-in barbecue and dine alfresco or walk the coastal path to Llafranc for a memorable meal along the seafront.

Renovated to feel luxurious and modern, this beautiful villa was originally built in the 1940s and it has the patchwork stone facade to show for it. Although imposing from a distance, the interior radiates comfort and homeliness to make your break as cosy as possible, but not without a little dash of pizazz. Wander across three floors to find your favourite spot in this home – we can guarantee for some it will be in the games room where you can pass hours playing billiards, whereas other may take most favourably to the minibar and dancefloor. 

As fun as it is indoors, the outdoor area has even more to offer. Splash in the pool or challenge each other to a game of tennis, but don’t forget to unwind on the sunloungers as you kick back with an ice-cold drink and good book. 

Light the barbecue for lunch and make use of the sprawling terrace to socialise with wine, nibbles and good conversation. For a bit of alone-time, you can take to one of the swing chairs to admire the view, or stretch yourself all the way out on one of the hammocks to have an afternoon nap in the shade of the trees. 

Costa Brava has an arresting Mediterranean coastline and we encourage you to explore it. Start by taking a twenty-five-minute walk to the soft sand of Llafranc beach. When you’re not enjoying alfresco meals at home, you might stroll to find some choice restaurants not even ten minutes away.

Wild gardens carry the scent of Mediterranean herbs and the swimming pool and terrace have been constructed with rose-hued stone from the nearby River Ter. The dining terrace can be closed off or opened up to the sprawling views thanks to folding glass doors and it backs onto the farmhouse-style kitchen. Bedrooms embrace the surroundings with traditional Catalan "volta" (brick vaulted) ceilings, along with the spartan lounge which feels like a ceramics workshop. Llafranc is a quiet part of Spain on the Costa Brava, with a stunning coastline and gorgeous beaches.

Your eye will most often be drawn outside, through the floor-to-ceiling windows that lead onto the large terrace. Trees surround the home, making it feel nicely secluded despite being part of a resort.

You might like to drive fourteen minutes to beautiful Calella de Palafrugell for lunch by the water, and then spend your evenings grilling up local seafood on the barbecue. 

The clear water and soft sand of Platja El Cau are a seven-minute walk away, so days at the beach couldn’t be easier. To really take in the glorious coastline, walk ten minutes to the viewpoint at Mirador de la Divina Pastora. It’s a wonderful spot for sunset.
