Gaudi might be famous for his work in Barcelona, but that hasn't stopped this home taking inspiration from the famous Catalan architect. A 200-year-old farmhouse has been turned into a slick, white-washed hangout. Modernist influences are seen in the rounded walls, arched doorways, and buckled pillars. The living room is far out, from the white pool and foosball tables to the huge semi-circular sofa. The master suite is the most impressive, sending out spaceship vibes with its round bed, droplet shaped fireplace and spacious curved bath. But not even the slinky interiors can compete with Mother Nature, as views over the hills and out to the sea abound from every angle. The garden has been planted with bougainvillea, which showers archways and dining tables with pink blossoms when it blooms. For special occasions, head to the home's club room, complete with a DJ hut and incredible sound system. You’ll find large living spaces across two floors, making this a great spot for two groups of families looking for the occasional downtime. We loved the contemporary windows that flood the interiors with natural light, providing a seamless transition between indoor and outdoor living. Its stone-walled garden is in keeping with the home’s traditional charm and offers a lovely backdrop to the sunsets over the Pyrenees each night.

Where to start with this 13th-century farmhouse sitting at the foothills of the Catalan Pyrenees? Surrounded by expansive gardens, fields, and woodlands, this home offers ancient heritage and contemporary design. With a LEED Platinum certification, the sustainably restored villa will make you feel good about your footprint, too. Though there’s no air conditioning, there are cooling floors and ceiling fans. And while the bedroom suites are on the simpler side, they provide mountain views to wake up to each morning. Sun terraces and shaded nooks offer sunseekers and wallflowers alike a place to spend the day. The fountain-fed Roman swimming pool invites you for a dip on a hot day and, wandering the expansive grounds, you’ll stumble across a tennis court and games area with ping pong. Outdoor dining is a treat with a huge table for the whole group in front of the summer kitchen and, if you’re hosting a special event, a marquee can be set up on the lawn.

The foundations of this home date back to the 14th century, and inside you can still get a feel for the medieval in the vaulted basement where you’ve got your own private spa. Down here, there’s an indoor swimming pool, steam room and sauna. Various lounges and sitting rooms allow the whole group to spread out and our favourite has to be the Rib-vaulted grand lounge with its Baroque painted ceiling harking back to a bygone era. Perhaps spend the evening taking it back to analogue in the library or snooker room.

Even before entering the house, we fell under the spell of its surroundings – the glistening pool, the stunning views, the huge garden, and the outdoor dining area, inviting you to plan those magical alfresco feasts that go on long into the warm, Spanish nights. You might hear some noise from neighbours due to the close-knit manner of the area's buildings, but you're within walking distance of several Llafranc restaurants, and it's easy to enjoy an authentic Spanish stay from this charming home.

You’ll be making the most of those knockout sea views, whatever the weather brings, at this Costa Brava villa perched in a quiet neighbourhood next to the Cala Canyelles cliffs. With an outdoor swimming pool and countless terraces for sunny days, along with an indoor swimming pool, Jacuzzi and sauna for cooler months, this place has it all going on. You can expect to do some entertaining here, too, with an outdoor bar area, a terrace with barbecue for alfresco feasts, and a pool table to keep the night flowing. Fancy breaking up pool days with an afternoon by the beach? Cala Canyelles, with water sports, is just two kilometres away.

The Castillo

Sandwiched between northern Spain's mountains and the Mediterranean sea, this apartment has incredible views over Costa Brava. Sliding doors surround the living area, flooding the white- and sand-hued room with sunshine. Push the doors open to relax on the wraparound balcony – prime position goes to the sun loungers and small breakfast table, which look directly over the waves. When you get too warm, wander down to the communal pool to cool off. Interiors are simple, with earthy, neutral tones in bedrooms – think swirling terracotta browns and clay reds on walls, with unique Japanese-style beds in two of the rooms. Both of the dining tables look on to beautiful vistas, though for a sea breeze, head out to the alfresco space – perfect for cool glasses of wine and star gazing.

Splashed across architectural digests and featured in glossy magazines, this is a very special spot in the Baix Empordà. Wild gardens carry the scent of Mediterranean herbs and the swimming pool and terrace have been constructed with rose-hued stone from the nearby River Ter. The dining terrace can be closed off or opened up to the sprawling views thanks to folding glass doors and it backs onto the farmhouse-style kitchen. Bedrooms embrace the surroundings with traditional Catalan "volta" (brick vaulted) ceilings, along with the spartan lounge which feels like a ceramics workshop. If you want to get out an explore, buzzing Girona is just over half-an-hour’s drive away and the beach at L'Estartit is twenty minutes by car.   

From the Riverbed

Plonked right on the Torremirona golf course, this home is a perfect base from which to explore the densely forested landscapes of the Paratge Natural l'Albera and Parc Natural de la Zona Volcànica de la Garrotxa, both within an hour's drive. There is also plenty to do right on your doorstep, from quaint shops to bakeries and butchers. If you're chasing the waves, there are sandy beaches a short drive away with access to water sports, as well as a skydiving centre if you really are chasing the rush. After a day packed with activities, return home to your villa and kick back on the comfortable patio chairs. The light, bright interiors are filled with eclectic art and sculpture, though we wouldn't blame you for abandoning them in favour of the pool. Cook up dinner at the outdoor stove, and don't forget the sangria.

Teal Dreams

This lovely home in Llafranc is perfect for those looking for absolute rest and relaxation. Boasting countryside views, this home is close to the beach and the bars of the town, while being nicely removed from tourist traps. Llafranc is a quiet part of Spain on the Costa Brava, with a stunning coastline and gorgeous beaches. 

The home is bright and cheerful, with bold splashes of colour that add warmth to the neutral palette. Your eye will most often be drawn outside, through the floor-to-ceiling windows that lead onto the large terrace. Trees surround the home, making it feel nicely secluded despite being part of a resort. 

When you’re not by the shared swimming pool – which is huge and inviting – you’ll likely spend most of your time on the terrace. There are sun loungers so sun-worshippers will be content, and there’s a lovely dining area too. You might like to drive fourteen minutes to beautiful Calella de Palafrugell for lunch by the water, and then spend your evenings grilling up local seafood on the barbecue. 

The clear water and soft sand of Platja El Cau are a seven-minute walk away, so days at the beach couldn’t be easier. To really take in the glorious coastline, walk ten minutes to the viewpoint at Mirador de la Divina Pastora. It’s a wonderful spot for sunset. 


Orange Sherbet

Perfectly positioned on a hillside, a ten-minute drive from the pretty town of Begur, this villa is all about sea views and laidback living. Your days will be spent on your private terrace, soaking up every last drop of the Costa Brava sunshine. Perhaps you’ll settle into a lounger with an ice-cold beverage in hand or maybe you’ll swim gentle laps in the glittering pool. When it’s time to eat, set the table on the balcony ready for a Catalan feast whipped up in the no-frills kitchen and if you’d like a quiet moment with your holiday read, the window seat in the bright living space is an excellent spot. Stretch your legs with a twenty-five-minute walk to Sa Tuna, an idyllic cove with a sandy beach – it was our favourite spot to while away the long afternoons. Head home before dusk with a bottle of Cava and watch the sunset melt into the ocean from your enviable vantage point.

This eye-catching villa has bagged a great spot on a stretch of coastline designated an area of outstanding natural beauty, overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. Cleverly designed over three floors to merge into the hillside, the home boasts sea views from inside and out. Lazy days can be spent admiring the vistas from the private pool and terraces and when you’re ready to head out, you’ll find a sandy beach and choice of restaurants in Tamariu, just a five-minute drive away.

This charming villa in the picturesque fishing village of Calella de Palafrugell is a rare find. Situated in a residential area just 450m from the pretty beach of Platja Canadell, this home is a great spot on the Costa Brava coastline. Though the house feels a little dated in parts, it offers a comfortable space to unwind when the midday Mediterranean sun reaches its peak – then again, there’s the outdoor pool to cool off in too. Make the most of the built-in barbecue and dine alfresco or walk the coastal path to Llafranc for a memorable meal along the seafront.
