The surrounding streets are packed with a host of options. Mornings can be best spent altogether walking around El Retiro Park, just a twelve-minute walk away. When it comes to lunch, there’s a whirlwind of culinary offerings so take your pick - a meat-centred affair at Sala de Despiece or hard-hitting small plates at Tripea’s open kitchen in ​​Mercado de Vallehermoso. Well, we'd say the open-plan living area doesn't have much of a homely feel. But, saying that, the bedrooms make up for this with their vibrant wallpaper. The kitchen is a bit compact, too, but it has everything you need to create some tasty tapas.

From the simple aesthetic to the functional design, this is a great option for couples and solo travellers in search of a refreshing city stay. At full occupancy, two guests will be sleeping on the sofa bed in the living room and the main bedroom is located on the mezzanine level (with no door), but you’ll find all the essentials needed to make it your own. Keep in mind that some noise should be expected here, but we think it's a small price to pay for this central spot. You'll find a great selection of restaurants on your doorstep if you'd like to sample the local cuisine, but if you'd prefer to dine in, the kitchen is well-equipped for homemade tapas.

Perfect for two friends or two couples sharing, this pocket-sized pad makes an ideal base for exploring Madrid's cultural hotspots. It's situated near the Triangle of the Art, within walking distance of countless museums, theatres, and performing arts centres. Easy access to Delicias metro stop and Atocha Station makes zipping to and from the centre a breeze – just be sure to pack earplugs, since you'll be right in the hustle and bustle here.

Set in a typical period building, it's anything but old-fashioned inside, with white walls and concrete tile floors providing the backdrop to a riot of colourful art and dramatic, contemporary furnishings. It’s not in pristine condition, as evidenced by the marks on the walls, but that’s an aesthetic consideration, and doesn’t make the home any less comfortable. The metro station in Lavapiés is close to the flat, and while the square outside is a little rough around the edges, there are several lively bars and restaurants.

Ten minutes from the alfresco drinking spots of Plaza Mayor, and just over fifteen from the lush greenery of the Parque de El Retiro, this apartment is a wonderful base in Madrid. Despite being so close to main attractions and located among the most vibrant streets, it’s a space where you can relax. This apartment is classy, colourful, and comfortable. The host has taken it upon themself to create a peaceful oasis in the middle of the city, curating an eclectic look with antiques and flea-market finds. We love the living and dining room, complete with mid-century chairs and a chandelier to create an elegant glow for dinner parties. Another fabulous use of light comes from the shuttered windows to your private balcony. With three sets of rich, wooden folding doors, you can step out to the railings with a glass of tempranillo after supper to watch the city light up at nightfall. With decorative, gilded bed frames in the sumptuous bedrooms, you’ll even feel stylish while you sleep. Rest up well, because you’ve got some exploring to do the next morning – the three galleries of the Art Walk are all less than fifteen minutes away.

The Venetian

The most remarkable thing about Espinas is the quiet. Despite having three balconies, and being in the middle of Lavapiés, the street it looks onto is actually fairly calm. The building is old, and a lot of the original structure features prominently in the flat, which has been designed to complement the space, rather than dominate it. There is some pretty loud wallpaper though, which stops the design from falling into the dreaded ‘neutral’ category.


Espinas

Simplicity is at the fore when it comes to Windcomb. The sense of space is not something to be taken for granted, either. Eight people, and not a sofa bed in sight. Unfortunately, it’s rather common for unscrupulous landlords to try to shoehorn people in, but that’s certainly not the case here. It’s a bit of a pain to have to climb up the steps, but that’s an occupational risk when you test so many homes in old buildings – it’s hardly a dealbreaker.


Windcomb

Situated a stone’s throw from Madrid’s Royal Palace and surrounded by the narrow streets of La Latina, this charming duplex apartment is the perfect place to base yourself while you’re exploring all the wonders that this city has to offer. 

From the cosy attic bedroom you’ll be able to admire the breathtaking views over the roofs of the old town, while the living area on the lower level invites you to kick off your shoes and relax after a long day of dashing about the city. We love the wooden ceiling, along with its beams and stylish light fixtures, adding to the warm and pleasant ambience. 

While this space is compact there is enough room to feel comfortable. You’ll be able to whip quick and delicious snacks in the well-equipped kitchenette and enjoy them at the elegant dining table. This can also serve as a great spot to catch up on any work you might have to do during your stay. 

Outside your cosy nest, you’ll find yourself right in the heart of Madrid, with most of its iconic sights within walking distance. If you feel like staying local, La Latina has got you covered with a wide range of dining and entertainment options.
