If you want to stay in a prestigious neighbourhood, how about this home in Salamanca? There are plenty of designer boutiques, art galleries and fine-dining restaurants to explore in the area. Naturally, you will hear some city noise here. This south-facing apartment is light and bright, and we love the Juliet balcony off the open-plan living room with its leafy Ayala Street views. There’s not much food preparation space in the kitchen, but that said, it’s well-equipped, and you can always let your host arrange for a private chef to cook some authentic tapas dishes.

We challenge you to find a prettier apartment overlooking the Royal Palace of Madrid. This place is a real showstopper, with twin Juliet balconies opening over Plaza de Oriente Gardens. Bold, bright and just downright beautiful, it's dripping in character thanks to ornate cornice, traditional shuttered windows and classical furnishing. A riot of elegant colours and patterns, it couldn't be further from modern minimalism if it tried.

Once you've arrived and stared out of the window for long enough to take it all in, choose between the two pretty bedrooms – one decorated in calming greens, the other in vibrant terracotta. There's a grand, open-plan living space to keep everything sociable, and a kitchen with everything you'll need for cooking at home. But we suspect you'll be eating out much of the time – it would be rude not to when surrounded by some of the best cafes and restaurants in the city. And with most of the major attractions on your doorstep too, you'll have plenty to see and do.

Located in the bustling heart of Madrid – just a one-minute walk from the city’s famous Gran Vía shopping street – this bright, comfortable home is the ideal base for those looking to get the most out of the city’s sights.

With its beach-vibe decor – think wood floors, palm feature walls, houseplants and wicker and wood accents – you’ll feel at ease from the moment you walk through the door. We love how much natural light pours in from the glass doors that lead out onto a Juliet balcony and the chic dining table that invites homemade tapas feasts and elegant soirées catered by a private chef (your host can organise this). The bedroom, meanwhile, is just as serene with its tropical statement wall and king-size bed, while the marble-clad bathroom beckons long bubble baths after a day of seeing the sights.

Speaking of exploring, you’ve got plenty to see and do within easy walking distance, including Puerta del Sol (eight minutes), Plaza Mayor (ten minutes), the Royal Palace of Madrid (fifteen minutes) and the Museo Nacional del Prado (twenty minutes). The Narcisse is only a few minutes away from Calle Fuencarral, one of our favourite shopping streets in Madrid. To say that it's centrally located is an understatement, especially since this home is practically surrounded by Malasaña's finest quirky cafes and restaurants. Narcisse is an ambitious home – the golden details are risky but well-balanced with calmer tones, and the layout is (rightfully) focused on maximising the natural light, which mostly comes from the French doors. But in the end, this home won us over with the urban view.

Modern, bright and centrally located close to Madrid’s top sights, this home right by Puerta del Sol is a sunny delight. 

With its blue and white colour scheme, exposed brick details and open-plan layout, it embodies city living in chic, cool style. Open up the bedroom’s French doors to look out over the city from the Juliet balcony first thing in the morning before ambling into the living room where another pair of Juliet balconies await. Kick back on the sofa with your coffee, letting the breeze sweep in through the open doors, then set out for a day of sightseeing – Plaza Mayor is just a seven-minute walk away, Gran Vía is a ten-minute stroll, while both the Royal Palace of Madrid and the world-famous Museo Nacional del Prado are fifteen minutes away on foot. 

After a day of exploring, come back home for a celebratory meal around the glass dining table or head out to discover the neighbourhood’s best tapas bars and restaurants. There's a reason Salamanca is one of Madrid's most sought-after neighbourhoods. With its gourmet eateries, world-renowned museums and luxury boutiques lining the Golden Mile, the area offers something for everyone. Just on the cusp of this swanky postcode is this apartment. The size is ideal for couples and solo travellers, but the option of a single sofa bed keeps sleeping arrangements flexible. Netflix and a Playstation have rainy days covered, and although it's not the most exciting home, we like the design – particularly the colourful wallpaper in the bedroom.

This chic and attractive apartment has everything you might need for a comfortable city break. It’s located in Chueca, one of Madrid’s liveliest neighbourhoods, full of cafes, boutiques, and bars. Despite its central location, this is a peaceful home-from-home, ideal for unwinding after busy sightseeing days and evenings spent feasting on tapas. It’s bright and welcoming, flooded with light, and has been beautifully decorated in muted tones. Two guests will sleep on a sofa bed in the living room – if you’re hoping for more space, we’d recommend a maximum occupancy of two.

You'll find this apartment in Argüelles, home to low-key tapas bars, art-house cinemas, and traditional eateries popular with students. Exploring is a breeze here. Ventura Rodriguez metro station is a short walk away, though you can also stroll to Plaza Mayor and the Royal Palace in about twenty minutes. Back home, there's a practical yet cosy living space. The kitchen is well-appointed for rustling up light bites, while three bedrooms offer respite after a long day on your feet. If you're looking for a laid-back stay, this pad is a great choice.

Molten Brass is neat and tidy. There isn’t a lot that jumps out at you, but that’s not necessarily a problem – the atmosphere inside is pretty calm. That stands in contrast to the atmosphere on the street below, which is pretty intense, but that’s because you’re in the heart of Malasaña, so there’s tonnes to do. As is common with any flat that is rented out all the time, there’s a lack of personality but the attention to detail, and generally pleasant, if simple, design help make the flat feel more homely.

You’ll find this modern apartment in the lively Chueca barrio, surrounded by cosy cafes, no-fuss tapas bars and cosmopolitan restaurants. The bustling Gran Vía, famous for its shopping opportunities, is close by and you’re within walking distance of some of Madrid’s must-visit sights including the Royal Palace, Prado Museum and leafy Retiro Park. If you’re keen to explore further afield, Chueca metro station is just footsteps from your doorstep. 

Inside the home, whitewashed walls add a fresh feel while exposed brick and black accents add an industrial edge. The terrace is the first thing that grabs your attention at this fabulous home, housed in a historic building dating back to 1919 – it's the perfect place for a glass (or a pitcher) of sangria. It really is a fantastic, south-facing outdoor space, with a sunshade – relax on the sun loungers or enjoy some alfresco tapas. There's an outside shower too to rinse off the suncream before going indoors. Inside, there's lots of light, and the huge living room is a wonderful space to entertain. We love the original artwork and colourful wallpapers in the bedrooms. This apartment is perfect for a group of friends, family or professionals on a business trip. We were surprised, as well, given its central, Calle Gran Vía location, how quiet it is here. Step out of the door, and you're on Madrid's most famous street, right in the centre of the capital. Here you'll find some of the city’s most iconic buildings, as well as boutiques, restaurants (let your lovely host make reservations) and bars galore. Take in the incredible views over Madrid from the roof terrace of Círculo de Bellas Artes, a cultural centre offering concerts and exhibitions, a five-minute stroll away. Or, get inspired at Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza with its masterpieces by Van Gogh, Caravaggio and Lichtenstein, nine minutes on foot. Architecture lovers, on the other hand, can admire Ayuntamiento de Madrid, or visit the exhibitions at Colegio Oficial de Arquitectos, both under a ten-minute saunter.

Malasaña is a frequent traveller's favourite. An ever-changing landscape of artisan cafes and local galleries, it's a perfect start to an off-the-beaten-path holiday. In the Flow is a typical Malasaña resident – relaxed and bohemian, with a mixture of high-quality furnishings and flea-market knick-knacks that add to its charm. It might not be a great home if you're particularly tall (due to the slanting ceilings), but it's big, bright, and comfortable.

Located in Madrid’s central Justicia neighbourhood, this practical studio-style apartment may be short on space, but it offers a prime position from which to soak up the best of the city’s sights. At full capacity, two guests will need to share the sofa bed which will make the living area a little tight. And the lack of natural light and views may not suit those looking for a more scenic stay. But for a base to drop your bags and explore nearby Gran Vía, El Retiro Park and Plaza Mayor, it’s a cosy spot that hits the mark.

Equal parts bohemian, artsy and elegant, the living area is bathed in light thanks to the stunning arched stained glass window that opens up in three parts to reveal views of the Parroquia de Nuestra Señora de los Dolores church across the street. Further light flows in from the glass doors leading out onto a private rooftop terrace with incredible views over Madrid’s skyline. Whether you start mornings here over fresh coffee and pastries or end the night with a celebratory Sangria, you’ll love feasting on the wide-sweeping views and watching the hustle and bustle below from your privileged seventh-floor vantage point. 
 
Back in the living room, there’s plenty to keep you entertained. Kick back on the stylish Mies Van der Rohe chair with one of the countless books on the shelves or make yourself comfortable as you listen to some vinyl from the host’s extensive collection. In the evenings, gather around the grand dining table for a celebratory soirée, then retreat to the tropical-inspired main bedroom for a blissful night’s sleep. With a children’s bed in the second bedroom as well as plenty of toys and games, this is the perfect spot for families, while the jazzy decor, vinyl collection, DVDs and stacked shelves will keep adults wonderfully happy too.
 
When it comes to exploring, your Chamberí neighbourhood offers a relaxed atmosphere away from the tourist crowds, with an abundance of tapas bars and restaurants frequented by locals. Elsewhere, the ​​Sorolla Museum is a seventeen-minute walk, bustling Gran Vía is an eighteen-minute stroll, while the Royal Palace of Madrid is twenty-five minutes away on foot. 
 


The Rohean

We'd struggle to think of a better location than Gran Vía. This avenue is the city's lifeline, filed with theatres, shops and great transport links to Madrid's many landmarks. Grey Magnolia isn't only central, it looks good too. Some might find its minimalism a bit boring, but the well-curated designer furniture has plenty of character, making the most of the small square footage. We especially liked the headboard in the bedroom and the chic dining table.

In the vibrant district of Salamanca, just a four-minute walk from the Nuñez De Balboa metro stop, this home is a classy yet unpretentious retreat in one of the most upscale areas of the city. There’s a beautiful contrast throughout where the decor mixes luxury furniture and decorations with somewhat industrial architectural features. A typically Spanish tiled floor separates the dining area from the white wooden floor of the living space, but with chunky, girder-like iron pillars at the other end. The pale frames of the delicate bamboo armchairs contrast the black metal and glass door frames leading to the kitchen. Overall, it really makes for an intriguing mix of interiors that is unique, opulent, and full of character – just like the surrounding neighbourhood. Head out into the elegant boulevards of this area to find Michelin-starred restaurants, exclusive bars, and high-end boutiques. Or you can escape the city vibes for an afternoon by taking a seventeen-minute walk to the Parque de El Retiro. You’re sure to be enchanted by this 350-acre parkland offering a boating lake, galleries, and sculptures.

Calle Almagro is probably one of the most iconic streets in Chamberí. Historically, the elites have fled central Madrid in hopes of finding a quieter vibe in this neighbourhood, leading to low-key chic architecture, great restaurants, and bars. Mucha's Jungle has an atypical interior design that reminded us of a Soho townhouse. The wooden floor is a piece of art on its own, and there are lots of beautiful design details dotted around. In spite of the fact that it looks a lot bigger, this is a small attic home, which is perfect for all who thrive in pretty, cosy spots.

This small and colourful home has a fairy-like quality. With a carefully selected simple palette, a few striking art pieces, and an abundance of natural materials, it makes the most of a compact space. There are lots of quirky details in Flowerhead, but the location is probably its greatest strength. Just across the road from the green vastness of Retiro, this home is within walking distance to both the museum quarter and the famous Puerta del Sol.

What a fabulous location this refurbished apartment has – Puerta del Sol, one of the best-known squares in the city, is just a two-minute stroll away.
