We challenge you to find a prettier apartment overlooking the Royal Palace of Madrid. This place is a real showstopper, with twin Juliet balconies opening over Plaza de Oriente Gardens. Bold, bright and just downright beautiful, it's dripping in character thanks to ornate cornice, traditional shuttered windows and classical furnishing. A riot of elegant colours and patterns, it couldn't be further from modern minimalism if it tried.

Once you've arrived and stared out of the window for long enough to take it all in, choose between the two pretty bedrooms – one decorated in calming greens, the other in vibrant terracotta. There's a grand, open-plan living space to keep everything sociable, and a kitchen with everything you'll need for cooking at home. But we suspect you'll be eating out much of the time – it would be rude not to when surrounded by some of the best cafes and restaurants in the city. And with most of the major attractions on your doorstep too, you'll have plenty to see and do.

This apartment is within walking distance of an array of attractions, such as Parque Madrid Rio, Casa de Campo, the Royal Palace and La Almudena Cathedral. Of course, there are plenty of dining options to discover in the area, too. The apartment has a desk if you need to catch up on emails and a well-equipped kitchen for making some tapas. We have to say, we love the main bedroom with its dressing room and en-suite. This home is a great choice whether you’re here for leisure or work.

With this apartment you get the best of both worlds – it’s situated between the traditional Chamberí district and the vibrant Malasaña neighbourhood. The Centro de Cultura Contemporánea Condeduque is a short stroll away, as is the Liria Palace. We love the large open-plan living space at this home – this room also sleeps guests three and four on a sofa bed. There’s a desk here too for when you need to work while staying in Spain’s capital city.

Seeking a stylish base in Madrid? This apartment is just the ticket. You'll find it near Chamberí, only a short walk from the metro connecting you to the best of the city. From shopping on Gran Vía to dining in nearby restaurants, there is plenty to see and do here. Neither the kitchen nor some of the bedrooms are the biggest, but it has all the essentials for a hassle-free stay. Just note that though there's space for five, we think it's a better fit for four.

Chamberí Ochre

Located metres from the iconic Plaza Mayor, this lovely Madrid apartment is the perfect place to stay if you want to get the most out of your time in the city. With an understated, soothing colour palette highlighted by the natural light flooding through the windows, you'll feel at home the moment you step through the front door. Its central location means you're surrounded by tempting tapas bars, charming neighbourhood cafes, and plenty of beautiful streets to wander down with no particular goal. So after a long day of adventuring, snuggle up on the cosy sofa and stream a classic Pedro Almodóvar movie before retreating to the serene bedrooms for a restful night's sleep. In the morning, sip on a cup of coffee as the colourful streets come to life below. In the heart of Madrid, just a few metres away from Plaza Mayor and within walking distance of Puerta del Sol, this city apartment couldn't be better located. Keep in mind that some noise should be expected here, but we think it's a small price to pay for this central spot. You'll find a great selection of restaurants on your doorstep if you'd like to sample the local cuisine, but if you'd prefer to dine in, the kitchen is well-equipped for homemade tapas.

After the plates are cleared, plan your itinerary at the dining table. We recommend starting with the Royal Palace, a mere ten-minute walk from your doorstep. If you’d like to stretch your legs a little further, it’s a thirty-minute stroll to El Retiro Park. Pause for a coffee on the buzzing Calle Cava Baja before picking a spot to bask in the sunshine beside El Retiro Lake.

The lively main square of Spain’s capital is exactly what you’d expect – historical 15th-century magnificence with a bronze statue of King Philip III in the middle. And of course, the exciting mix of drinking spots and shaded alfresco dining continues. You might be wondering why we’re so interested in this specific spot – well, this is your address.

This modern apartment trades in centuries of history for bright and shiny interiors (you’ve got plenty of history outside). Naturally, the living space features two huge glass doors leading you to a private balcony facing on to the celebrated square. A cushy white sofa and dining chairs around a glass table bring a futuristic feel, while pink orchids contrast with an organic edge.

But while you sip tempranillo and nibble olives with views over the king’s statue, your host has further plans make you feel regal. They can arrange for private city tours, dry cleaning, grocery deliveries, and even themed dinner nights – royal banquet anyone?

It's easy to get to all the landmarks on foot or by metro, and there are a lot of bars and restaurants nearby. Unsurprisingly it can get a tad noisy – but that's part of the city experience. We love the bright living area, and the two snug bedrooms channel Spanish sunshine with their yellow paint. Size-wise, it's rather compact but still comfortable – just note that it's on the second floor and lacks a lift.

You'll find this apartment in Argüelles, home to low-key tapas bars, art-house cinemas, and traditional eateries popular with students. Exploring is a breeze here. Ventura Rodriguez metro station is a short walk away, though you can also stroll to Plaza Mayor and the Royal Palace in about twenty minutes. Back home, there's a practical yet cosy living space. The kitchen is well-appointed for rustling up light bites, while three bedrooms offer respite after a long day on your feet. If you're looking for a laid-back stay, this pad is a great choice.

In the heart of Madrid’s artsiest neighbourhood, Barrio de las Letras, this studio apartment is the perfect base for a cultural city break. Located right in the centre of Madrid within walking distance of its cultural treasures, this apartment is its own gallery of miscellaneous wonders perched high above the pavements. Starting from the fuzzy caterpillar-like chaise lounge in the living room that sets the eclectic glamorous tone, this home puts just about everything in the mix, from boldly patterned wallpaper and towering palm plants to the Asian dresser in the living area and the bright blue countertop. It's fair to say that we loved it. A small balcony in one of the bedrooms was the cherry on the cake and is perfect for when you want a blast of fresh air on a stuffy afternoon. If you want to head out exploring, Museo Nacional del Prado is just over ten minutes' walk away, while Palacio de Cristal in the middle of Parque de el Retiro takes around twenty-five.

Cornucopia

What a great location this apartment has in Madrid. The Royal Palace is just seven minutes on foot, while the Almudena Cathedral and the Plaza Mayor are within walking distance, too. As you'd expect from such a central location, you will hear some city noise while staying here. After all that exploring, you can sit in this home's shared courtyard and get your breath back. Inside, we love the living area's double-height ceilings and galleried landing, and there's a desk here if you need to catch up on work. We'd say the adjacent ground-floor bedroom isn't fully private, as it's a cubicle room with three-quarter-height walls – otherwise, this is a great home for couples, a family or business colleagues.

Angela, the host, actually used to live in this apartment when she was a kid. She later inherited it from her father. It was empty for a while, but then she decided to refurbish it with the aid of her husband and daughter (who are both architects), the result being a rustic-meets-Scandinavian-style home of our dreams. It's impossible to find fault with the design – it’s truly the stuff that interior design magazines are made of. Set against Malasaña, the location is also wonderful, with concept stores, independent eateries and coffee shops on your doorstep.

This bright and comfortable apartment is just a stone’s throw from the Royal Palace of Madrid. The official residence of the Head of State is open to the public, so you can explore the spot where centuries of Spanish history took place. The apartment is also just in front of the Sabatini Gardens, and 100 metres from Príncipe Pio train station. Plaza de España is only a five-minute walk away, too. Two guests will be sleeping on a sofa bed in the living room, so things might feel a little crowded – you’re unlikely to be spending much time at home though.
