Located in the north-most part of Salamanca, El Bodegón combines a sense of luxury and with a prime shopping destination of the nearby Calle Serrano (and the proximity to the sights). This is a luxuriously comfortable home that made us want to sink into the comfy sofa and rest, or enjoy a great book on the closed balcony. The master bathroom, as pretty as it is, feels a bit narrow, but it's still well-equipped and comfortable.

In the vibrant district of Salamanca, just a four-minute walk from the Nuñez De Balboa metro stop, this home is a classy yet unpretentious retreat in one of the most upscale areas of the city. There’s a beautiful contrast throughout where the decor mixes luxury furniture and decorations with somewhat industrial architectural features. A typically Spanish tiled floor separates the dining area from the white wooden floor of the living space, but with chunky, girder-like iron pillars at the other end. The pale frames of the delicate bamboo armchairs contrast the black metal and glass door frames leading to the kitchen. Overall, it really makes for an intriguing mix of interiors that is unique, opulent, and full of character – just like the surrounding neighbourhood. Head out into the elegant boulevards of this area to find Michelin-starred restaurants, exclusive bars, and high-end boutiques. Or you can escape the city vibes for an afternoon by taking a seventeen-minute walk to the Parque de El Retiro. We stumbled upon Gatito while looking at homes with high and mighty terraces. Madrid isn't a beach city, but this home will have you thinking that the sea is just on the other side of the building, which is a key part of its charm. The insides are chic, designed for comfort and a good night's sleep, but it's the dining room that gets the best light and will turn meals into an experience for the senses. There isn't much art around – this is a full-time rental home after all, but if you're after something nice to look at, then we can recommend the scenic view.

There’s not much food preparation space in the kitchen, but that said, it’s well-equipped, and you can always let your host arrange for a private chef to cook some authentic tapas dishes.

We challenge you to find a prettier apartment overlooking the Royal Palace of Madrid. This place is a real showstopper, with twin Juliet balconies opening over Plaza de Oriente Gardens. Bold, bright and just downright beautiful, it's dripping in character thanks to ornate cornice, traditional shuttered windows and classical furnishing. A riot of elegant colours and patterns, it couldn't be further from modern minimalism if it tried.

Once you've arrived and stared out of the window for long enough to take it all in, choose between the two pretty bedrooms – one decorated in calming greens, the other in vibrant terracotta.
