When you see as many flats as we do, you learn very quickly to tell which homes have been done up for convenience, and which are a labour of love. Toquilla clearly falls into the latter category. It’s been designed as a whole, with thought and attention put into the schemes, as well as the materials. We particularly liked the concrete pillars and the glass walls, neither of which are especially common in Madrid. The only real complaint we have is the fake plants – They’re understandable for the convenience, but really, most places would be better off without anything.

We challenge you to find a prettier apartment overlooking the Royal Palace of Madrid. This place is a real showstopper, with twin Juliet balconies opening over Plaza de Oriente Gardens. Bold, bright and just downright beautiful, it's dripping in character thanks to ornate cornice, traditional shuttered windows and classical furnishing. A riot of elegant colours and patterns, it couldn't be further from modern minimalism if it tried.

Once you've arrived and stared out of the window for long enough to take it all in, choose between the two pretty bedrooms – one decorated in calming greens, the other in vibrant terracotta. There's a grand, open-plan living space to keep everything sociable, and a kitchen with everything you'll need for cooking at home. But we suspect you'll be eating out much of the time – it would be rude not to when surrounded by some of the best cafes and restaurants in the city. And with most of the major attractions on your doorstep too, you'll have plenty to see and do.



The Palace Window 

Located in Madrid’s central Justicia neighbourhood, this practical studio-style apartment may be short on space, but it offers a prime position from which to soak up the best of the city’s sights. At full capacity, two guests will need to share the sofa bed which will make the living area a little tight. And the lack of natural light and views may not suit those looking for a more scenic stay. But for a base to drop your bags and explore nearby Gran Vía, El Retiro Park and Plaza Mayor, it’s a cosy spot that hits the mark.

Blue Torito is a chilled-out home located in one of the liveliest parts of Madrid. Even though it sports a gentle colour palette, it uses patterns and textures to give it a bit more spunk. From woven carpets to the textured headboards, it's apparent that the hosts like playing with details. The design is somewhat lacking a coherent theme, but Blue Torito is still a solid, bright, and comfortable choice, with access to a resident-only pool and terrace.

This chic and attractive apartment has everything you might need for a comfortable city break. It’s located in Chueca, one of Madrid’s liveliest neighbourhoods, full of cafes, boutiques, and bars. Despite its central location, this is a peaceful home-from-home, ideal for unwinding after busy sightseeing days and evenings spent feasting on tapas. It’s bright and welcoming, flooded with light, and has been beautifully decorated in muted tones. Two guests will sleep on a sofa bed in the living room – if you’re hoping for more space, we’d recommend a maximum occupancy of two.

Whether you're visiting Madrid for work, to catch up with family, or simply want to enjoy everything the city has to offer, this apartment is an excellent place to drop your bags. Situated in the Salamanca district, this smart spot reflects its sophisticated location perfectly – we think you'll feel at home in no time at all.  

Step inside, and you'll notice the abundance of natural light flowing in through the large windows, and the tranquil ambiance throughout. The open-plan layout maximises space and makes it easy to chat with your guests while you cook, eat and relax. There's even a breakfast bar for quick morning coffees and a wonderful balcony area where you can sip a sundowner in the fresh air.

And, if you want to travel further afield. just hop on the Metro at Velázquez – it's only four minutes away on foot.

We loved the industrial-chic interiors – it’s all poured concrete floors, exposed brick walls and reclaimed timber beams. After the plates are cleared, plan your itinerary at the dining table. We recommend starting with the Royal Palace, a mere ten-minute walk from your doorstep. If you’d like to stretch your legs a little further, it’s a thirty-minute stroll to El Retiro Park. Pause for a coffee on the buzzing Calle Cava Baja before picking a spot to bask in the sunshine beside El Retiro Lake.

An enviable structure with high ceilings and big windows is filled with custom-made furniture that leaves plenty of space to move around. We loved the use of space that puts desks, chairs and bold art pieces in unexpected places – against all odds, it works.

In the vibrant district of Salamanca, just a four-minute walk from the Nuñez De Balboa metro stop, this home is a classy yet unpretentious retreat in one of the most upscale areas of the city. There’s a beautiful contrast throughout where the decor mixes luxury furniture and decorations with somewhat industrial architectural features. A typically Spanish tiled floor separates the dining area from the white wooden floor of the living space, but with chunky, girder-like iron pillars at the other end. The pale frames of the delicate bamboo armchairs contrast the black metal and glass door frames leading to the kitchen. Overall, it really makes for an intriguing mix of interiors that is unique, opulent, and full of character – just like the surrounding neighbourhood. Head out into the elegant boulevards of this area to find Michelin-starred restaurants, exclusive bars, and high-end boutiques.
