This modern apartment trades in centuries of history for bright and shiny interiors (you’ve got plenty of history outside). Naturally, the living space features two huge glass doors leading you to a private balcony facing on to the celebrated square. We challenge you to find a prettier apartment overlooking the Royal Palace of Madrid. This place is a real showstopper, with twin Juliet balconies opening over Plaza de Oriente Gardens. When you see as many flats as we do, you learn very quickly to tell which homes have been done up for convenience, and which are a labour of love. Toquilla clearly falls into the latter category. It’s been designed as a whole, with thought and attention put into the schemes, as well as the materials. We particularly liked the concrete pillars and the glass walls, neither of which are especially common in Madrid. The only real complaint we have is the fake plants – They’re understandable for the convenience, but really, most places would be better off without anything.

Calle Almagro is probably one of the most iconic streets in Chamberí. Historically, the elites have fled central Madrid in hopes of finding a quieter vibe in this neighbourhood, leading to low-key chic architecture, great restaurants, and bars. Mucha's Jungle has an atypical interior design that reminded us of a Soho townhouse. The wooden floor is a piece of art on its own, and there are lots of beautiful design details dotted around. In spite of the fact that it looks a lot bigger, this is a small attic home, which is perfect for all who thrive in pretty, cosy spots.

Located in the bustling heart of Madrid – just a one-minute walk from the city’s famous Gran Vía shopping street – this bright, comfortable home is the ideal base for those looking to get the most out of the city’s sights.

The Narcisse is only a few minutes away from Calle Fuencarral, one of our favourite shopping streets in Madrid. To say that it's centrally located is an understatement, especially since this home is practically surrounded by Malasaña's finest quirky cafes and restaurants. Narcisse is an ambitious home – the golden details are risky but well-balanced with calmer tones, and the layout is (rightfully) focused on maximising the natural light, which mostly comes from the French doors. But in the end, this home won us over with the urban view.

Malasaña is famous for being slightly outrageous, which is probably why Queen of the Castle is in it. A tour of this home reveals a glamorous hybrid design theme that balances modern baroque-inspired pieces with jungle and safari themes – dear lovers of minimalism, you might want to stay elsewhere. But if gold-coated flora and fauna with an occasional crown-cum-skull ensemble sound like heaven to you, then you'll find Queen of the Castle an absolute delight. Not to mention that you'll be within walking distance to Puerta del Sol and the vibrant neighbourhood of Chueca.
